Social Comp v2.0 (Jan Mar) Rounds 3 + 4 Round 3 of the social comp v2.0 was on Monday 29 January, and it was another nail biter in the opening match. The Piranhas went on to inflict the Skulls first ever loss (finally!!!) with a hard fought 8-7 victory. Richard had a pearler for the Piranhas with 3 goals, while Vasa and Trent had 2 apiece. Robbie McKay rounded out the scoring with a goal. For the Skulls, veterans Joel Sangster and Sean Rose turned back time (did I mention Cher is performing at Mardi Gras this year) with 2 goals each, while George, Ty and Shane had a goal each. Shane was so distraught by the loss he has temporarily moved to Sydney. The second match was also a close contest, with the Otters getting up over the Beatty Sparks 8-6. For the Otters Nathan, Paul Rodrigues (venturing out from goals) and Ali had 2 goals apiece, while Mitch and Chef Pete had a goal each. The Beatty Sparks had a very even spread of scorers, with Michael Hancock, Richard, Robert B, Cipri, Liam and Tyler Sims all scoring a goal. The win to the Piranhas propelled them to the top of the leader board for the first time. Round 4 was on 5 February, and the first game was so close it was decided in the last 5 seconds! With scores locked at 9 all, Tyler Sims scored with 5 seconds left in the game to give the Skulls a razor thin 10-9 win over the Beatty Sparks. Tyler ended up leading the Skulls with 4 goals, while Luke George had 2 of his own. Jerome, Liam Firth, Richard Morisey and Nick Ebner had a goal each. For the Beatty Sparks, Vasa, Rob McKay, Cipri and Sean Jacka had 2 goals each, while newly bearded Lee Vaughan also scored.
In the second match the Piranhas jumped out to an early lead over the Otters and held on for a 10-7 victory, despite a late comeback from the aquatic mammals. For the Piranhas the damage was largely done by Tyler Sims (4 goals) and Liam Firth (3 goals), while Daniel Deluca chipped in for a couple of goals and Sean Jacka rounded out the scoring with a goal of his own. The Otters were led by Luke George with 3 goals, while Jerome and Paul Rodrigues had 2 apiece (that s 2 weeks in a row Paul has been allowed out of goals!). The Piranhas win keeps them on top of the ladder, but only by half a game. The closeness of the new comp is truly exciting to watch. Next Round Round 5 of the Social Comp v2.0 is on Monday 12 February. At 6.15pm the Beatty Sparks play the Piranhas, while at 7.00pm the Otters taken on the Skulls. Final Word The social comp continues to incredibly even, with so many matches coming down to the wire. This is really pleasing to see and is great for the competition. However, it has been noted that on occasion too many senior Phantoms have been playing for some teams, and in some cases not subbing enough. We are working on some strategies to fix this, and will hopefully have something in place for next round. Till next time. Brendon
