PLEASANT VALLEY SWIM SEASON 2017 WELCOME all new and returning swimmers! We are looking forward to another fun and fast year of Viking Swimming. As we all work together this season we can anticipate many new goals met and friendships made. We are excited to see returning athletes once again and also to meet new members of our team. We hope this season is a positive and rewarding experience for all of you. PRACTICE SCHEDULE: MONDAY FRIDAY 3:15-5:15 at Bidwell Junior High. We will also have an optional morning practice on Monday and Thursday from 5:30-7:00 a.m. at BJHS. Cross-training will be on Mon and Thu afternoons. 1. Swimmers are expected to be seated in the bleachers promptly at 3:15 with their swim suits on, ready to begin practice. We will often have a brief team meeting before the start of practice/workout. 2. You should bring a suit, towel, goggles, swim cap, and water to practice each day. It is a good idea to have a light and healthy snack after school/before practice. 3. We may need to set up the lane lines and will need to get out the pace clock, white board, and kickboards each day before practice. 4. There will be optional morning practices. Generally, our dual meets will be on Wednesdays. ALL swimmers are expected to swim either in the morning before school or after school. 5. Roll will be taken at practice and swimmers are expected to attend each day. If you need to miss a practice, please notify one of the coaches, preferably by text. Be sure to identify yourself! MEET TRANSPORTATION: All swimmers are expected to ride the bus to the meets. We compete as a team and we travel as a team. However, circumstances do arise and athletes may ride home with their parents (ONLY) after filling out the necessary paperwork and submitting it to one of the coaches. The team bus will leave from in front of the cafeteria at Pleasant Valley High School and return to the same location after meets. The bus will not wait if you are late so please be in your seat, ready to go at departure time. Also, please remember to respect the driver, the bus, and your team mates and coaches by following the rules of safety on the bus. YOU ARE REPRESENTING YOUR SCHOOL! LETTERING CRITERIA: The following requirements must be met to earn a Varsity Letter for the Pleasant Valley Swim Team: ATTENDANCE: A swimmer must consistently attend practice and meets. If an absence is excused it will not count against the athlete s attendance percentage. Unexcused absences will result in a swimmer not receiving a letter. ATTITUDE: A swimmer must show proper respect for all team mates, opponents, coaches, officials, etc. at all times. A swimmer must also be willing to participate in practices/workouts to the best of their ability each day. They must be supportive of team mates by showing good sportsmanship and encouraging and cheering for them at meets. A good attitude must be shown at practice by getting in on time and giving your best effort from the beginning to the end of the practice session. ACCOMPLISHMENT: A swimmer must meet one of the following criteria: 1) Be a team member in good standing on the Pleasant Valley Swim Team for three or more years, or 2) Qualify and compete in the North Section Championship meet.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the home and away swim meets. The dual meets last about 2-2 ½ hours and are usually after school on Wednesdays. There will be a few weekend meets that will last most of the day. At the HOME MEETS we will need parent support in the following areas: 1. Volunteer timers (fun and easy!) 2. Scorekeepers (usually in the shade!) 3. Runners (to take the timecards to the scorekeepers after each race good exercise! And you don t really have to run ) At LEAGUE and SECTION championships our school will need to provide timers for one lane for the entire meet. Parents usually take turns timing throughout the meet. A SNACK BAR Coordinator will be needed to help raise funds for the team during home meets. An AWARDS DESSERT will be held at the conclusion of the season. We will need a coordinator to organize this fun event. We would like to have three TEAM DINNERS during the season. They are a great way for the kids to get to know each other and bond as a team. Please support your child by being positive and encouraging. Swimming is a tiring, challenging sport and requires dedication, patience, and determination. Encourage good nutrition and plenty of sleep. They will need it! Thank you in advance for allowing us to spend this season with your kids. Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. Communication is encouraged and appreciated.
TEAM EXPECTATIONS: To help with understanding and communication during the swim season the following Team Expectations have been developed. Failure to comply with these expectations will/may lead to disciplinary action and/or dismissal from the program. 1. All swimmers are required to have a physical on file and all other required paperwork turned in before the swimmer will be allowed to participate in any practice sessions or swim meets. 2. If you must be out of the water for an extended period of time, then a doctor s note will be required. 5. Swimmers are required to keep up in their classes. If school time will be missed for a swim meet please notify your teacher in advance and make sure your assignments are turned in on time. 6.
