NEW WAVE SEF DEFENSE SHAOLIN KEMPO KARATE MANUAL AND CURRICULUM Last revised January, 2015 A brief History of New Wave New Wave was founded as a Shaolin Kempo Karate school in 1985 by Shihan Erik Kugel. In March of 2000, the academy was passed on to Shihan Fernando Fialho, Mestrando/Sensei Silas Pinto, and Shihan Carlos De La Cruz. The school has since expanded to an academy that offers the traditional art of Kempo Karate and fluid art of African-Brazilian Capoeira. Throughout its transformations, one thing has remained the same a sense of community, fellowship and commitment to excellent in the martial arts we offer. Still, you have decided to join New Wave Self Defense, and we look forward to the opportunity of sharing one of the most comprehensive martial arts of our time, Shaolin Kempo Karate. Kempo by definition is Mixture. It is omnivorous by design and encompasses elements from several arts with a particular foci on Chinese and Japanese based arts of self defense. The New Wave system, however, does incorporate the knowledge from the backgrounds of our instructors, which also includes Tae Kwon Do kicking and Jiu Jitsu techniques from ground self-defense. We are committed to making your (child s) experience as positive and intense as possible. TO START ATTENDANCE Remember that this is a commitment to both yourself as well as your classmates o Beginners 8 formal classes monthly minimum o Intermediates o Advanced 10 formal classes per month minimum 11 formal MMA classes monthly minimum UNIFORM Uniform represent unity and fosters a feeling of team, hence, are extremely important to the community aspect of the academy. All students are required to wear the full uniform during the week. The options are full gi or gi pants with the team/school Tshirt. CLUBS and TEAMS Our program has several clubs and teams designed to challenge students and provide leadership opportunities in the school. Clubs and Teams are available to intermediates and advanced students. This includes weapons training and performance team. EQUIPMENT New Wave requires full protection equipment for all contact aspects of the martial arts. The gear MUST be approved by the instructors. For your convenience, we provide gear and have several vendors with whom we collaborate for reliable, inexpensive gear. o Mouth Piece, Cup, head protector, hand and foot protectors

Gears MUST BE approved by the managing staff, for liability purposes. If you have gear from previous training, but are new to the school please check with the office about your gear. We order medium level gear, which provides very good protection and are appropriate for the level of training and sparring matches. Members of the Performance team may be required to purchase additional gear depending on the requirements from tournaments. TESTING and PROMOTIONS The program holds 4 graduations per year. One of which is a large graduation, with workshops, demonstrations and other events. Fees for graduations and testing are separate and registrations will be available once the child is deemed ready for the opportunity to test for promotion. All testing are lead by senior instructors (Shihans and/or Senseis). PLEASE NOTE: Graduations are celebrations. We cancel classes and encourage all of you to attend, regardless if you are going to be receiving a new belt. PRIVATES and CIRCUIT TRAINING We also hold individual and group privates in all of our programs. You will have opportunities to talk to instructors about private lessons once you have been training for at least 6 months. DROP-OFF and PICK-UP POLICY VERY IMPORTANT: For minors parents MUST walk the students into the building and pick them up in the hallway. For the safety of your children, we would like to make sure they are going home with people we know. This also provides us with the opportunity to update you on upcoming events and activities. Take the time at drop-off to review the information boards. FLEXIBILITY This is an extremely important dimension of the martial arts and should be exercised from the beginning of one s training. Hold each pose for 1 minute each (only 6 minutes total INVEST THE TIME!) Additional stretches will be introduced in class to enhance your routine. HEALTHY EATING and SLEEPING Be mindful of your diet and sleep. Your energy in class heavily relies on healthy eating and sleeping habits. TOURNAMENTS and COMPETITION Please communicate with your instructors if you are interested in competition so that we can create an Individualized Training Plan for you. We host 2 inner-school tournaments per year and attend up to 5 out-of-school tournaments per year depending on student interests.
