SPONSORS The Board, Staff and Members of the Badminton Association of WA would like to thank the following sponsors for their continued support and contributions to the progression of the sport of badminton in Western Australia. 11

EXECUTIVE REPORTS President s Report I am pleased to report that 2014 again saw a continuation of growth in all areas for Badminton WA. This was achieved through significant contributions by many people. Membership Our relatively ambitious goal to have 3000 Members on our books in 2014 was not attained - finishing the year with 2329 registered members - still a good result. A full breakdown of this figure is shown in the Registrar s report. Having four (4) Associations and fifty seven (57) clubs affiliated with the Association is excellent and gives us the opportunity to reach large numbers of players and to provide valuable services to those who manage and organise these groups. The automatic inclusion of the comprehensive insurance package (Public Liability, Player Injury, Professional Indemnity, Directors and Officers Insurance and Fidelity Cover) in the price of club/member affiliation/registration fees has continued to have been recognised by clubs as a benefit well worth having. Department of Sport and Recreation Our relationship with the WA Department of Sport and Recreation is sound and our new DSR Consultant, Mrs Jacqui Jashari, has already provided us with much valued advice. We have received increased funding from DSR for our Sustainability Grant over the next three years to the tune of $75,000 annually, an increase of 8.6% The Board of Management and the executive has worked with DSR during the year to implement a number of projects, namely undertaking an self-evaluation by the Board of Management that assisted in identifying any particular areas of focus required, completing of the Workforce Development Plan in conjunction with Gary Collins from JGC Group as well as receiving the final report from Rippa Sports into recreational badminton. Kim Rodgers (Treasurer) and Himanshu Thacker (EO) attended the Advanced NFP Governance course held by DSRWA in May 2014 with the focus of the program being on effective and efficient governance, board appraisal, financial management & clear communication. Our Information Technology needs have continued to undergo change and improvement during the past year. Our new website was implemented in early 2014 and has continued to evolve throughout the year with an increase use of Facebook and e-mail software. The importance of the management and structure of IT in any business is well recognised. With our 3 year grant coming to an end this year, we have plans in place to finalise our updates and purchases. Purchases this past year have included additional electronics for presentations and website updates including online event registration with thanks to Alyka. We are at present finalising the update that will allow member Associations and Clubs to register and pay online. WA Health Promotion Foundation (Healthway) Our 2014 Healthway projects were all successfully completed and the grant money was able to be spread across seven projects, covering Junior s (school tournaments, Higgs Trophy, State Junior Championships, District High School Country Week) and Seniors (Country Week, Bunbury Open, Masters Challenge Trophy and four Open tournaments). Details of these events are shown later in this Annual Report. It is disappointing to report that our grant for 2015 from the WA Health Promotion Foundation (Healthway) has remained at the reduced rate that we received in 2015. This again caused us to re-think our funding to proposed projects. Nevertheless we will still be able to support seven projects, though again to a lesser extent. One of the benefits of gaining grant money for projects is that participant costs can be kept as low as possible, thus allowing more players to be involved. 12

Badminton Australia Badminton Australia is to be congratulated on the running of the Australian Super Series event in 2014. Although there were some teething issues, mainly due to a new venue, in general the feedback was that the event was well regarded. This event also provided an excellent opportunity for a large group of new Line Judges to participate in a world class tournament. We continued to receive participation funding from Badminton Australia under the CaLD (Culturally and Linguistically Diverse) programme to June 2014. The new round of Participation funding has not yet been started as we are waiting for BA to provide information on submissions. Work on the new Draft Constitution for Badminton Australia has continued throughout the year, with many hours of work being spent reviewing proposed changes to the constitution. In May 2015, Judith Cousins (Secretary) & Kim Rodgers (Treasurer) attended a meeting with representatives from the Australian Sports Commission, WA Sports Commission, the Department of Sports and Recreation with regard to discussing mandatory governance principles and issues between BA & BAWA. The outcome of the meeting was a useful exchange of points of view. At the BA AGM in November 2014 it was acknowledged that there was an urgent need to have a meeting between all parties with a view to finalising the proposed constitution. BA advised that they will set up this meeting early in 2015. At the time of writing this report we have not received any notification regarding a meeting from BA. The BOM of BAWA will continue to following up this process with BA. Five juniors, Xiang Lin, Tyzton Tan, Gavin Chung, Bella Yutong & Kai Chen Teoh were selected in the Australian Badminton Junior squad to travel to and compete at the Singapore Youth International in November 2014. Nick Kidd was selected as one of the Australian Coaches to travel with the Squad. BAWA awarded travel scholarships to the selected players. National Carnivals Our State teams competed at the four national carnivals with some success, winning two team bronze medals (U17 & U19). Full details are shown in reports later in this report. We hosted the CP Maddern Trophy and Under 19 Championships and the event organisation was praised by all who attended. Major sponsorship by Aries Car Rental was greatly appreciated. The Senior Team, competing in Geelong at the Ede Clendinnen Shield, finished a disappointing last, an unfortunate first for a WA Senior Team. Maintaining players so they move into senior ranks is one of the challenges we face. Currently our senior players do not seem as committed to training and competing at the required level. Thank you to all the players, coaches, managers and court officials for their support of our State teams. Thank you as well to the parents of our junior players who also make a considerable contribution (both financially and time-wise) in supporting the sporting ambitions of their children. Committees I wish to thank all the Badminton WA Committees, members of whom are the unseen yet dedicated workers behind many of our activities. Their reports are within this Annual Report and a study of these indicates the number of tasks they undertake: Events; Court Officials; Grading; Junior Development; and High Performance. Our successful year is underpinned by the work of these people. 13

Volunteers We are fortunate that we also have a small group of volunteers who, though not on any Committee, still turn up to help - often doing thankless tasks. Their support is greatly appreciated. However I do need to note that the Association does require more volunteers to assist in events, which will lighten the workload for everyone. It was pleasing that a number of students from UWA assisted with several events in 2014- organised through the University Volunteering programme. They made a valuable contribution. Special Thanks. I wish to especially thank our Auditor and Life Member, Bruce Perryman, for the work he has done for us. His continued interest in the sport and the thoroughness with which he oversees the finances is gratefully acknowledged. Staff We have one full time paid staff member, our Executive Officer, Himanshu Thacker Over the year Himanshu has worked many hours (often over weekends) on the development of badminton across WA. He has developed strong relationships with Badminton WA members (both metropolitan and regional) as well as with significant government bodies. Unfortunately for BAWA Himanshu has decided to resign his position with the Association to seek other opportunities of interest to him. We wish Himanshu all the best in his future ventures. After a short search the Board of Management approached a current Board member, Mr Eugene Glazman and enticed him to change streams and become our new Executive Officer. Eugene brings a wealth of experience to the Association and I along with the Board of Management welcome Eugene to the position and look forward to working with him in continuing to build the Association. We also have a part time staff member, Elaine Lee. Elaine joined the Association in April 2014 and has provided valuable administrative assistance to Himanshu by undertaking some of the day to day tasks which have allowed him to have more focus on strategic matters. Elaine will continue to be employed as an assistant to the Executive Officer. Conclusion My special thanks to the members of the Board of Management, all of whom are volunteers, and at times take on multiple roles. Judith Cousins exchanged roles this year and became our very efficient Secretary and part time Event Director in Mark Duxbury s absence. It is of note that Judith was a finalist for a Celebrate WA award Sport Division Award and attended at a glittering ceremony at the WA Convention Centre, surrounded by family, friends and BAWA representatives. Kim Rodgers (Treasurer) gave up many hours to ensure our finances were in good order and Badminton Australia matters were all well-handled. Kim was a finalist at the ANZ Sports Star Awards in the Service to Sport Category and at a star-studded ceremony at the Crown Ballroom, Kim won the Service to Sport award. Kim now retires as Treasurer as per the requirements of the Constitution. Dianne Booth was meticulous in her handling of the Registrar s work and in managing the payment desk at numerous events throughout the year. Dianne has also served her full three terms as a Board member and also must now retire from the BOM due to the Constitutional requirements. Mark Duxbury continued overseeing events with enthusiasm, although his work commitments had him out of the city at times during the year. Annie Sim as Manager of the U15 High Performance group and State Teams has handled the dual role very well. Eugene Glazman commenced as a member of the BOM this year and accepted a number of roles primarily focusing on IT projects which have been professionally managed. His business acumen will be missed on the BOM as Eugene has now accepted the role of the Executive Officer. Andrew Chai commenced on the BOM this year and accepted the Junior Development portfolio. I was delighted to present a Badminton WA Service Award to Andrew Chai at the Annual Awards Dinner. I believe we can look forward to 2015 with confidence as we continue to build from a strong base. However we, as both an Association and a Board of Management cannot become complacent but need to continue to 14

look for new opportunities and to consider new directions and possibilities. This is my first year as your President and I have found it to be challenging, interesting and at times a little daunting. However with the great team I have around me, I have managed to keep most of my hair. It has been my pleasure to work with such a dedicated and committed group of people. While there have been challenges, problems and some minor yet aggravating annoyances during the year, we have met and generally solved all issues that have arisen. The Association needs to continue to move forward in a professional manner and this may require an increase in paid staff to ensure that the BOM has the right skill-set to manage the range of work to be done. Bruce Napier President. February, 2015 15

Executive Officer s Report 2014 has been another exciting and challenging year for growth of Badminton in WA. The association s goals were to continue on the steep membership growth which was experienced in the past 3 year and to improve/increase the services that are being offered to existing members. Although in 2014, the association did not experience the same percentage of increase in membership that it has seen over the past 3 years, we have been successful in retaining over 90% of its affiliated clubs from 2013 and have been successful in securing affiliation from some new clubs too (details in Registrars Report). A new Badminton WA website was launched with online registration facility in 2014 which helped in streamlining operations of Badminton WA membership management activities however it is still work in progress as the online payment facility is yet to be opened. The Badminton WA events were well attended and the state teams especially the junior teams performed well at the national carnivals (details in state team report) The new Strategic Plan 2014-17 was approved by the BAWA Board of Management and gives clear direction to the association pathway for the next 3 years. The future of badminton in WA looks bright with growing junior participation both in Metro and Regional WA. At the end of this month, I will have completed 5 years of service as the Executive Officer of Badminton WA. This is my last and final report in this position as I have resigned from the position. I have thoroughly enjoyed my work during the past 5 years at the association. I would like to sincerely thank the BAWA board of management, sponsors, volunteers and affiliated clubs and associations for supporting the associations and myself during this tenure. Court Officials Committee Report REPORT OF ACTIVITIES IN 2014 In 2014 members of the Court Officials Committee again provided of their time and expertise in assisting in the successful conduct of tournaments and events at which they officiated, not only within Western Australia but throughout Australia and indeed the world. The biggest national competitive event for Western Australia in 2014 was the successful hosting of the competition for the C P Maddern Trophy and the Australian Closed Championships in Perth at Kingsway. The Referee was Don Stockins OAM and in a team effort with the organising committee, Perth based umpires and interstate umpires ensured the competition proceeded smoothly in the usual well organised fashion for which Western Australian badminton has long been recognised. The Board of Management of the BAWA Inc. and its Tournament/Events Committee (a number of members of which are members of the Court Officials Committee) need to be congratulated again for their very successful endeavours in arranging and conducting tournaments and special events at the Kingsway Indoor Sports Stadium and other venues in 2014. The conducting of interstate events, tournaments and other competitions has continued to enable members of the Court Officials Committee to practise and enhance their skills, whether it be in refereeing, umpiring or line judging in support of the successful staging of those events, tournaments and other competitions for the players. The Board s successful endeavours has resulted in a continuing increase in membership numbers for the BAWA Inc and an increased number of players wishing to particularly participate in tournaments and the servicing of such tournaments with referees, umpires and line judges is a time consuming but worthwhile contribution to BAWA affairs by members of this Committee. More members of this Committee have committed themselves to officiating in 2014 than ever before and it will be impossible to record in this Report each and every member s activities for 2014 because it would literally take up too much space, so the Report will mention just some of the more memorable activities of some of the members of this Committee, with apologies to those who may have been omitted. Interstate team events Competition for the June Bevan Trophy and the Under 17 Australasian Junior Championships (April 2014) - Auckland, New Zealand Annie Sim was the Umpire for the Western Australian team that competed at the above Carnival. Thank you Annie for your continued support in this important age area. Competition for the C P Maddern Trophy and the Under 19 Australian Closed Junior Championships (July 2014) - Perth, Western Australia The veteran Don Stockins refereed this Event with Peter Cocker as Deputy Referee and Jiten Bhatt was the Umpire for the Western Australian team that competed at this Carnival. A big thank you to all other members of this Committee and volunteer umpires from Bunbury and the line judges who provided their services. Competition for the Ede-Clendinnen Shield and the Australian Closed Championships (August/September 2014 Geelong, Victoria) New umpire Eugene Glazman kindly volunteered to be the Umpire for the Western Australian team that competed at the above Carnival when Cynthia Tam was selected as a player. 20

Competition for the Val Nesbitt Trophy and the Under 15 Australian Championships (September/October 2014) - Launceston, Tasmania Mark Duxbury once again kindly provided his services as Umpire for the Western Australian team that competed at the above Carnival. The BAWA Inc. policy of meeting the travel and accommodation costs of State team umpires continues to be a positive move which should continue to encourage any interested persons to consider achieving a formal umpire qualification and then to utilise such qualification in support of the players and coach and manager representing their State. A one day crash course on the laws of badminton was conducted by Jiten Bhatt and Greg Vellacott in June for prospective umpires and it is to be hoped that in 2015 some if not all of the attendees at that course will offer to umpire at events in their Associations as well as at BWA Inc. tournaments with a view to furthering their umpiring interest over time. Interstate events Peter Cocker once again refereed several events in South Australia. National (International) Events Referees, umpires and line judges aplenty continued their great contribution to national events such as the: Maribyrnong International (Melbourne, Victoria) - Don Stockins (Referee); Oceania Teams Event and Championships, Ballarat, Victoria - Jane Wheatley, (Deputy Referee), Jiten Bhatt (Umpire); and Australian Open BWF Super Series - Sydney (Jane Wheatley (Deputy Referee), Peter Cocker (Event Director Operations), Kelly Hoare (Umpire), Jiten Bhatt (Umpire) and Bruce Napier (Line Judge). International (overseas) Events Jane Wheatley in her capacity as a BWF Certificated Referee refereed at the Singapore Open BWF Super Series Event in April and Jane Wheatley subsequently went on to be Referee at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland later in the year and then in October she refereed at the French Open BWF Super Series Event in Paris. Congratulations again to Jane on a busy and demanding year for BWF. Kelly Hoare in her capacity as a BWF Certificated Umpire also travelled extensively and umpired throughout the world, including at the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup Finals in New Delhi, India in May 2014 and at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland later in the year. Jiten Bhatt in his capacity as an Oceania Certificated Umpire also umpired at the Djarum Superliga in Indonesia, the Austrian International in Vienna in February 2014 and then at the Singapore Open BWF Super Series Event in Singapore in April. Jiten became qualified as a BWF Accredited Umpire when he successfully passed theory and practical examinations at the BWF Li Ning World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark in August/September 2014. Well done Jiten on a very busy year. Bruce Napier in his capacity as a BWF Certificated Line Judge also line judged at the New Zealand Grand Prix Gold in Auckland and then went on to line judge at the BWF Li Ning World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. Colin Harris in his capacity as a BWF Certificated Line Judge line judged at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. 21

Greg Vellacott in his capacity as BWF Assessor (Umpires) attended the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup Finals in New Delhi, India in May for workshops and then conducted appraisals of existing BWF Umpires at the Indonesian Open BWF Super Series Event in Jakarta and then conducted assessments of prospective BWF Umpires from Continental Confederations at the BWF Li Ning World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. Peter Cocker in his capacity as member of the BWF Technical Officials Commission also attended the annual meeting of that body at that was held during the BWF Li Ning World Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark. Members of the BAWA Inc. s Court Officials Committee also continued wherever possible to provide their services as referees, umpires and line judges for all tournaments and other events conducted by or under the auspices of the BAWA Inc. Members of this Committee can be very proud of their contribution to the support of the players of our sport at all levels. Their contribution at a national and international level is especially significant and their essentially voluntary commitment to our sport (when most members continue to work full time at their usual jobs) is once again a tribute to the energy and enthusiasm they bring to the support of the sport at all levels. Committee matters BAWA Inc. Court Officials Committee - Jane Wheatley resigned her position as Secretary/Treasurer of this Committee prior to this Committee s annual general meeting in February 2014. Thankyou Jane for all your hard work on this Committee and the encouragement especially of its younger members for many years. Jiten Bhatt was re-elected to replace Jane Wheatley as Secretary/Treasurer for the balance of her two (2) year term that expires at the BAWA Inc. AGM in 2015. Badminton Australia Court Officials Committee - Peter Cocker, Greg Vellacott and Jane Wheatley continued as members of that particular Committee. Badminton Oceania Technical Officials Committee - Peter Cocker and Greg Vellacott continue as members of that particular Committee. As noted in last year s Report, officiating in any category is a time consuming business but it can also be rewarding to know that through such effort one is contributing in a significant way to the proper management and conduct of an event that involves many players, some of whom play for fitness and recreation and some who play for the thrill and pleasure of trying to win (not to mention the significant amount of prize money that is now on offer at tournaments throughout Australia and, of course, internationally). As always, there is a need for younger officials to service the sport. The process of refreshing the executive of this Committee and its membership has now begun following on from Jane Wheatley s resignation. It is hoped that the younger members of this Committee and the recent course attendees and others wanting to participate more fully in BAWA Inc. activities will take encouragement from existing members and grasp the opportunity to umpire and line judge wherever possible so as to assist themselves in their own future development and that of the BAWA Inc. in the process. The members of this Committee have never been as active in respect of their officiating services to the BAWA Inc., Badminton Australia, Badminton Oceania and Badminton World Federation as part of their service to the sport an achievement of which we can all be justifiably proud. Chairman. 22

High Performance Report The High Performance Programme covers both State Teams and Talent Squads. It fits within the Policy, Planning and Management (Key Result Area 1) of the Badminton WA Strategic Plan but mainly focuses on Athlete Development (Key Result Area 2). It has not been possible to make any definite link with the Badminton Australia High Performance Plan as this was never clearly articulated beyond the selection and training of a small group of players based in Victoria with no WA player involved in the programme. Travel scholarships were provided for five junior players (no one was eligible, or applied for, Senior travel scholarships) to attend the Singapore Youth International. Xiang Lin, Tyzton Tan, Gavin Chung, Kai Chen Teoh and Bella Liu were all part of the large Australian contingent at his popular event. The Under 15 targeted High Performance Talent squad established under Coach Yuli Zheng, in 2013, continued and flourished in 2014. Under her tutelage, the young players made considerable development through this training programme. This is seen as the lead-in to State Team selection. Coach Yuli Zheng will continue coaching this HP Squad for 2015. The State Junior Teams performed well on the national stage. The full reports for each team are shown within this Annual Report. U15 Team: Finished in fourth position. A creditable result from these young players. It was unfortunate that the No 1 boy was injured early in the competition and although he continued playing, he was unable to perform to his best standard. There was general disappointment within this team as the Players had expected a medal finish. U15 Team 2 (combined Metro and Geraldton team). These young players enjoyed a national carnival and gained valuable experience at a strong competitive event which should assist in their development. U17 Team: Won the BRONZE MEDAL. The Under 17 event is an Australasian event, with State Team juniors from Australia, New Zealand and some island nations competing in the Championships. It is also the biggest and most gruelling event on the State Team calendar. WA had not won a medal in the U17s for many years and this Bronze medal win was certainly a sweet one for the WA Team players, Coach Yuli Zheng and Manager Kay Terry. U19 Team: Won the BRONZE MEDAL. This event, held in Perth before an enthusiastic local audience, saw the WA team snatch an extremely close victory over South Australia to take third place and repeat their performance from 2013. This is a very young team, with all players in the team still eligible to play in the U19 Team, and some still eligible to play in the U17 in 2015. Another sweet win for the players and also for the first timers husband and wife team of Andrew Chai (coach) and Jillian Chai (Manager). Senior Team: Finished last. This was an extremely disappointing result and is an area where much work is required to bring juniors through into senior ranks whilst maintaining their interest and enthusiasm for the sport. Fitness is also an important issue and to foster their training regimes so that they are competitive. 23

Individual Event - National Titles Congratulations to our Bella Liu (U15) as she is the 2014 National Under 15 Girl Singles Champion. Congratulations also to Gerimay Nicolas who won the National Girls Doubles event with Bella Liu. Gerimay was also the runner up in the National Mixed Doubles event with her partner Felix Wang from Victoria. Competition: All State team players were required to compete in the Badminton WA Open events and some also the State Junior Championships. As is expected, good results were garnered by all the State team players. Junior Development and High Performance programs are a significant part of the work of the Association. The goal of the High Performance program is to prepare our young talented juniors, and to make available a pathway towards representing WA in national tournaments and Australia in International tournaments, in both the junior and senior ranks. Currently, we are reaping some results with our more successful juniors being invited by Badminton Australia to participate in some international events as members of the Australian team. Our other goal in High Performance is to see the HP juniors progressing to the Senior ranks, achieving results and representing Australia in the National Team. This is perhaps harder as we know that life gets in the way : studies, work, family.. We do like a challenge however, and we will work hard towards that goal. In 2015, there are plans in the works to set up a High Performance Squad that will involve the Under 17, Under 19 and Senior players. Next year, we hope to give a good report on this initiative. The High Performance portfolio not only depends on the funds that are allocated by BAWA. There are so many people who volunteer their time for the State Teams: the coaches and managers who go above and beyond, the umpires and officials who give up their holidays to travel with the State Teams, the selectors for the State Teams, BAWA Board Members and Court Officials and other unseen volunteers during tournaments and the list goes on. We must not forget the efforts of all the mothers and fathers of the High Performance team members. Without them driving the players back and forth to training sessions and extra training sessions, helping to raise funds and looking after the players during the state team travels, the High Performance portfolio will not exist. And finally the High Performance boys and girls who train as hard as they can to repay all these efforts. Thank you all. Annie Sim Board Member High Performance Portfolio 24

Events Committee Report 2014 has been another exciting and extremely busy year for the Events Committee, both regards to participation and organisation. Every event had an appointed Referee thanks to the Court Officials Committee. I would like to thank Mrs Kelly Hoare, Mr Peter Cocker (OAM) and Mr Don Stockins (OAM) for their time and professionalism as Referees. Their duties included the in-putting of entries, publishing the draw, printing all results and many weekends sitting at the match the desk resolving issues and problems that arose. The Bunbury Districts Badminton Association hosted the Bunbury Open for a second consecutive year with 102 players participating in this event. The Events Committee appointed a technical official (Mr Peter Cocker: Referee) and volunteers to assist the running of this tournament. I would like to say thank you to all involved for their time and effort to help make the Bunbury Open a success. The Tournaments that BAWA hosted this year are as follows: "Be Active" Kingsway; Autumn Tournament; Country Carnival; State Championships; National U19's (including the CP Maddern Trophy); Silver Cup; Seniors 50+ Challenge and the AC Sports Classic all attracted high participation numbers and many spectators. I would like to thank Judith Cousins our BAWA Secretary who assisted at every tournament this year as well as performing her own duties on the BAWA Board as well. Judy was also the Tournament Director on three occasions on my behalf due to my commitments working away this year. All I can say is thank you so so much. At every tournament I have a volunteer announcer at the match desk calling out games all day and all night, his name is Trevor Briedis. Trevor works tirelessly all weekends announcing and also doing the presentations at the duration of every event, thank you Trevor. We had a new Board Member join the BAWA board this year - Eugene Glazman. Eugene is so helpful and enthusiastic and is willing to assist with numerous tasks. He demonstrated professionalism as a technical assistant at all our tournaments assisting with data entry, and setting up and programming of the tournaments information on the website. A big thank you Eugene. I would also like to show my appreciation to Kay Terry (Life Member), Bruce Napier (President of BAWA), Dianne Booth (Board Member), Jeff Tomlinson and Colin Harris who all assist with either setting up, data entry, shuttle control, sweeping floor and helping on the match desk etc. Thank you so much, I cannot run the tournaments without you. Also Himanshu Thacker our Executive Officer, thank you for your assistance with all the tournament tasks you perform before every event. Badminton WA hosted the U19's Carnival this year at Kingsway International Stadium, Madeley. The Referee was Don Stockins, Technical Officer was Peter Cocker, Tournament Director was myself Mark Duxbury and Judith Cousins. Judy, in my absence before this event due to my commitments working away, attended to all incoming emails and dealt with all the associated issues with organising this tournament. What can I say "again" a big thank you Judy. Trevor Briedis was the announcer and master of ceremonies. Kay Terry, Bruce Napier, Dianne Booth, Samuel Fan, and the Court Officials Committee (Greg Vellacott) for organising the referee and umpires for this tournament all played a part in the organisation. There were numerous tasks performed by these people. My sincere appreciation for your help and dedication which helped to make this carnival such a high quality event. At the final tournament this year, the AC Classic, we trialled the format of all matches to be played the 25

best of three games with settings. This proved to be a huge success with the players, hence providing good feedback to the organisers and encouraging us to proceed with this format for future events. The kitchen functioned for most of the tournaments, usually as a fund raising exercise for one of the State teams and I wish to thank all involved for their services. Also a special mention to Andrew Chai who ran the Pro Shop at our events this year, thanks cobber. Once again my thanks goes to my fellow Board Members, without your assistance and advise throughout 2014, I could not achieve the success that we do at our tournaments. As I mentioned previously, my thanks to all the volunteers, the Court Officials Committee and players whose support made 2014 such a successful year. Mark Duxbury Event Director January 2015 Junior Development Committee Report The JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME which was ratified by the BOM in 2013 has been implemented to a degree in the last year. Regional development groups Geraldton & Bunbury School tournaments Junior events It should be noted that the High Performance Programme, though separate from this Junior Development Programme, also covers some aspects of Junior Development. Regionally there has been the continuation of sound junior development at different levels in Geraldton and some work with juniors in Bunbury. There does need to be more assistance given to juniors in the Mandurah region and greater liaison with the Goldfields area. The Craigie Junior (north of the river) group (Coach Kim Rodgers) was established in 2013 and continued in 2014. The aim is to have a larger group of young players involved in this programme in 2015. The support of a junior programme south of the river is also being planned. Junior events: The Higgs Trophy (Teams) was held in the July School holidays and was a great success. This was followed by the State Junior Championships. Results are shown in the Event Reports section of this Annual Report. Junior sections were held in the Open tournament events (except for the Silver Cup) and these were well supported. School tournaments were again very successful. The three events had an average of 153 students (Year 7 to Year 12) participating (an increase from 2013) and an average of 10 different schools being represented on each occasion. The opening of four extra courts at the Kingsway Stadium has the potential to extend the number of participants at these events. 26

Two specific junior tournaments (Craigie Teams and South Suburban Individuals) were well supported and enjoyed by the participants. Results within this Annual Report. There are many juniors working with independent Coaches/groups and these activities are not included in this report, though it is acknowledged that many of these young players compete in Association events. A continued area of disappointment is that the number of boys playing far outweighs the girls and this is naturally reflected in State squads and groups. A specific initiative is needed to address this. The development of Junior players is vital to the continued growth of the sport. The establishment of new junior groups under the auspices of Badminton WA, the continuation of junior events and encouragement of Coaches to work with juniors is essential. Grading Sub Committee Report The Grading Sub-Committee continued its work in 2014. The Grading Lists which had been re-set up in 2009 have been continuously built on since then so that there are now 1083 players listed with their grades for singles, doubles and mixed doubles events. This list is readily accessed through the website making it easy for tournament players to check their personal grades. The Committee continues to accept a player s own grading for the first event he or she plays in and notes that a great majority of players are quite accurate in assessing their grading- as demonstrated by the tournament results. This committee met prior to every event to check grading s as shown on the Entry Forms and the week following a tournament all results are checked, with Winners being assessed for upgrading. First-time players were added to the list. Any player wishing a down-grade has been able to contact the committee and the request considered and assessed, based on the player s tournament results. The introduction of on-line tournament entry means that in 2015 grading checking will be done by the Technical official. It may results in this sub-committee having its role limited to the assessment of up/down grading following each event. This sub-committee of Badminton WA has enjoyed the grading task and the members are committed to being thorough and working to the ByLaws. Sub-Committee: Trish Turner (Chairperson) Winston Allen 27

Western Australian Health Foundation HEALTHWAY PROGRAMMES Once again our continuing partnership with the Western Australian Health Foundation (Healthway) resulted in a grant that was able to be used effectively in the promotion of badminton across WA. Although the majority of the programmes were metropolitan based, the Bunbury event, plus the Country Carnival and District High Schools Country Week (Regional participants) were all successful and well supported. Unfortunately this year the grant was reduced which resulted in fewer programmes being undertaken. The seven programmes were: Programme 1: DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL COUNTRY WEEK Programme 2: COUNTRY CARNIVAL Programme 3: SECONDARY SCHOOL TOURNAMENTS Programme 4: OPEN EVENTS Programme 5: BUNBURY OPEN Programme 6: MASTERS CHALLENGE TROPHY Programme 7: HIGGS TROPHY & JUNIOR STATECHAMPIONSHIPS Each of the above programmes achieved the goals and were used to promote the Be Active message. Healthway signs were displayed on each occasion: the Be Active match desk cloths were used, event workers wore the provided polo tops and Be Active water bottles, caps and wrist bands were distributed. Regular verbal acknowledgements were made and all Entry Forms (where applicable) showed the Healthway logo. The Healthway grant made it possible to organise and manage these programmes so the cost to participants was reasonable. All participants who were not registered members of Badminton WA became Event Members (on the payment of a fee) for the duration and were therefore covered by Player Insurance. Each of the above programmes is reported in detail within this Annual Report. Dates, venues, event workers, participants, and results are shown and this gives a clear indication of the success of the projects. A number of volunteers all cheerfully gave up their time to organise, manage, umpire and generally help to make these Healthway projects a successful and significant part of the Badminton WA year. 28

As well as the Bunbury Badminton Centre, the South West Sports Centre was utilized for scheduling of Junior matches, originally planned only for Saturday. Future tournaments must ensure that the Referee is advised of start times, and plan for the utilisation of the SWSC on Saturday only unless entry numbers determine otherwise. The use of UHF radios for communication between the 2 centers assisted in the facilitation of timely match scheduling. It was important to ensure the SWSC coordinator numbered the courts and placed games on the allocated court for efficient flow of game scheduling. 31

A very pleasing number of entries were received however more than half were received after the closing date so the challenge for future years is to have entries received in a timely manner. Be Active District High School Country Week EVENT District High Schools Country Week (Badminton Section) DATES 22nd - 26 th Sept 2014 LOCATION Loftus Recreation Centre COMPETITION MANAGER Judith Cousins PARTICIPANTS Thirty two (32) teams of two players representing six schools: Pemberton, Waroona, Kalbarri and Bullsbrook, Northampton, John Willcock College (Geraldton) UMPIRES Kim Rodgers, Winston Allen, Kay Terry, Trish Turner, Punita Mandalia, Ryan Lin, Sanjay Menon, Marie Mason, Crystal Diep and Vondie Wan Three volunteers from UWA, Ke Zheng, Sien Wong & Fei Han also assisted. COMMENT This event is part of the large District High Schools Country Week competition with a number of sports being played. This is the sixth year badminton has been included. The organisation of the overall event is done by School Sports WA with individual sports providing Competition Managers and Officials. FORMAT Teams consisted of two players- a mix of boy s pairs, girl s pairs and mixed pairs. A round robin format was used with preliminary matches being played to determine grading pools. Ties in these pools determined final positions in the four grades. Five competition points were gained for winning a tie which consisted of 3 matches: one doubles and 2 singles. A match was best of three games to 15 points- no setting. Two competition points were gained by the Loser. Timing: The Pool Ties were only allocated 40 minutes but this was able to be managed by playing the Singles on separate courts when they were available. It was a tight schedule. Four Badminton WA coaches (Kay Terry, Ryan Lin, Crystal Diep & Vondie Wan) organised a coaching session prior to the first Ties. It would be more useful if a longer time could be 44

allocated for this. Discussion with the Coaches resulted in a decision to review what is achievable in such a short time period. Umpiring. Badminton WA provided Umpires for all ties. They coped well with a number of consecutive matches on all days although the level of play makes the umpiring quite easy it is still demanding to be required to umpire consecutive Ties. This event was very successful with the country players enjoying the competition. There were a number of hard-fought matches and the standard noticeably improved as the week went on. Three hundred and sixty (360) matches (best of 3) were played. The Badminton WA Executive Officer (Himanshu Thacker) represented Badminton WA at the Closing Ceremony. Shields were awarded for all winning Divisions. Again, they won all their matches, with both Bella and Gerimay playing hard matches against their opponents before they secured a point each for the team in their singles. The following day, the team only had one match, against the Territories. The team went on to win this round easily, however, Kai Chen injured himself during his singles match and it affected him for the rest of the tournament. With Kai Chen injured, the team had a hard time during their matches against Victoria 1 and Victoria 2. Even though we lost, everyone gave their best. 49

It proved a good experience for these young players. It was encouraging to win the first and last matches in this round robin event. The top teams from Victoria and New South Wales were of a high standard and in these matches we were unable to win a game, nevertheless all players kept trying and there were often long rallies. Erin Els worked hard in her singles winning her first match but then came up against the No 1 Seed in Round 2. This was the first experience of a national carnival for most of these players and the experience should benefit them in the future. Fifteen teams from Australia, New Zealand and Oceania competed. Most players found the week-long carnival physically and mentally demanding but they all performed to the best of their ability. The TEAM result was excellent as this was the first Team medal (Bronze) won in the age group for ten years. Individual results were also good. Tyzton Tan (and partner Janet Son from NSW) reached the Semifinals of the Mixed Doubles. Gavin Chung reached the Semi-Finals of the Men s Singles and also Semi-Finals of Men s Doubles with partner Edward Fan. Bella Yutong and Olivia Fianita won the Women s Doubles Consolation Plate after being defeated by the 5/8 seeds in the Championships. We did not achieve what we hoped for as we expected to be able to produce better results than those shown above. Special thanks to Michael Chan and Eddie Hung who assisted with the coaching when two courts were operating and Coach Jason Nowland was working with the other players. A special thank you to our Junior player, Gavin Chung who was a pleasure to coach and was a valued part of the team. We were not helped by some nagging injuries. 56

Jennie was our least experienced player but she trained twice a week to be prepared for the tournament. Her efforts paid off as by time we left she was our strongest doubles and mixed performer. She gave her all on court. Finishing the team event in last place was very disappointing- this is a position WA has never held before and indicates that much more training and general preparation is necessary if we are to raise our standard. INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: RESULTS NAME OF PLAYER Eddie Hung William Thwe Gavin Chung Alphonsus Ng Beth Hollett Michael Chan Jennie Ko Cynthia Tam RESULTS Singles: first round loss Doubles: first round loss Mixed Doubles: first round loss Singles: first round loss Doubles: first round loss Mixed Doubles: did not compete Singles: Reached second round Doubles: first round loss Mixed Doubles: did not compete Singles: first round loss Doubles: first round loss Mixed Doubles: first round Singles: Reached the quarter finals Doubles: first round loss Mixed Doubles: first round loss Doubles: first round loss Mixed Doubles: first round loss Singles: first round loss Doubles: first round loss Mixed Doubles: first round loss Did not compete The Individual results were also very disappointing with most players being defeated in the first round. The best result was achieved by Beth Hollett who reached the quarter-finals of the Women s Singles, which was quite a good effort. Gavin Hung- still a junior player-did his best at all times and should have gained some useful experience from competing in this event. It was obvious that our players were not at the required fitness level, nor were they competition ready for these Championships. It was disappointing that no Consolation Plate event was organised as first round losers had no further competition. The By Laws have now been changed so the Plate event is a part of the Closed Championships. 57

Our regular activities during the year include social badminton played on Wednesday mornings, Wednesday nights, Thursday nights and Sunday mornings. We also have a strong pennant competition that is conducted in two series, winter and summer. Our major event for the year is the hosting of the South West Open Championships held in March. We also organised two major fundraising events during the year, a Bunnings sausage sizzle and a karaoke fancy dress night that assists junior player/s to travel interstate for National Junior events.
