Beaches & Pools Unit New and Former Lifeguard Candidates Information Sheet Pre-Employment Requirements for Hiring Anyone interested in becoming a lifeguard must apply immediately. The position you have applied for in the Chicago Park District requires you to take a PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG SCREENING TEST. The Chicago Park District does not knowingly employ anyone who is currently using drugs. All applicants that are 17 & over will be fingerprinted before being hired. You are required to attend a separate processing to complete the hiring process, this information will be available after completion of the test. COMPLETION OF THE PRE-EMPLOYMENT PROCESSING IS REQUIRED BEFORE YOU CAN BE ASSIGNED TO A LOCATION. You must attend the Swim Test you signed up to attend. You will not be permitted in at other tests. Applicants will report at 9:00 am for the testing. Applicants will wait in line outside. Dress appropriately for the weather. Once the doors close no one will be admitted into the test. No backstroke allowed. Slowest passing time = 3 min. 30 sec. 25-yard underwater swim. Retrieve an object from the bottom of the pool in 14 feet of water from a surface dive. Break the Front and Rear Strangle Hold in Lifesaving. Cross Chest Carry a subject for 25 yards. Candidates may be required to take a vision test. All candidates must have satisfactory hearing and speaking skills. No one is guaranteed employment simply because he or she has passed the above lifeguard swim test. Former Lifeguard Training Academy FORMER LIFEGUARD TRAINING ACADEMY is a one-day orientation for returning seasonal lifeguards to the Chicago Park District. All former lifeguards will be required to complete all the components of the orientation (Review of Policies and Procedures, Park District Written Test, and ARC Waterfront Lifeguarding skills and written) before they can be rehired. Candidates must bring a swimsuit and hip pack with pocket mask and must arrive on time. Everyone must get recertified in the new material, you must register with the Red Cross at https://classes.redcross.org/r/class000000006803004/1330201442 (cut and paste to browser for best results) and complete the on-line portion prior to attending Former School. There is a $15.00 non-refundable recertification fee. It is your responsibility to maintain your own certifications! New Lifeguard Training Academy 2018 The NEW LIFEGUARD TRAINING ACADEMY will be held on five (5) consecutive days, including a final testing date. Only those applicants who have taken the qualifying LIFEGUARD SWIM TEST will be admitted. Registration for the Lifeguard Academy will be held on the test date. Attendance of all 5 days within a session is highly recommended. Training day starts at 5:00 pm and ends at 9:00 pm, unless otherwise noted. Workout clothes are required for the week, and a swimsuit is required on Pool Day. An American Red Cross Lifeguarding Book (r.17) is recommended, and a hip pack with CPR Pocket Mask is required for all training days. Participants will be evaluated throughout the Academy and will be ranked based on attendance and punctuality, participation, and proficiency in American Red Cross and Chicago Park District lifesaving skills. Candidates who successfully complete the Academy will be hired and assigned based on their ranking until all positions are filled. Completion of the Academy does not guarantee employment.
