SEPTEMBER 2016 Volume 46 Number 9 The Commodore s Corner By Jim Keen commodore@smsa.com Hot Summer Ramps Down Bring on Fall Sailing and Wind! The month of August started out with a good number of our SMSA race crews traveling away from local waters to race, and they represented themselves and our club exceptionally well Four of our SMSA Buccaneer crews traveled to Gloucester, Virginia to race in the 50-boat Virginia Governor s Cup Regatta hosted by the Ware River Yacht Club. Those crews were Jenn Marbourg-Miller/ Eric Gyorgy (2 nd ), Jimmy Yurko/ Jeff (3 rd ), Jeff Moore/ Dorian, and Mark Gyorgy/ Nichole Daub. The crews reported a great party and a good time by all. The same weekend found 9 of our SMSA Keel boats bucking 15-20 kts on the nose, racing overnight from Annapolis to St. Mary s College in the 43 rd running of the Maryland Governor s Cup Regatta. Congratulations to all of our SMSA racers who participated... Clarke McKinney/ Riptide, 2 nd in CRCA Class; Joe Frost/ Gemini, 3 rd in CRCA Class; Jim and Barb Whited/ Bad Cat; Marc Briere/ Cheetah; Chris Dowell/ Ad Astra; Eddie Sierra and Scotty Roland/ Antagonist, 2 nd in PHRF B; David and Jackie Meiser/ Easy Button, 1 st in PHRF C; Jeff Jeffries/ IRETSU, 3 rd in PHRF-N; and John McKinney/ Tennounce, 1 st in [Potomac Fleet PHRF- N. And, there s always a great party at the College after Gov Cup. Well done to all! Of course, the cruisers were hard at it again this past month starting with a week-long cruise to Cape Charles for the Buyboat and Oyster Festival, followed shortly thereafter by the Annapolis Summer Theater Cruise. The cruisers and racers mixed it up together at the end of August with the Mixed Couples Race/Cruise to Battle Creek and the Vice Commodore s Cup Cruise/Race to the Corinthian Yacht Club on Smith Creek. By mid-august, Patty Kimmel and Rich Freeman on Patty K Too were leading the Cruiser Fleet in cruise points with Curt and Dottie Hamilton close on their heels on Serenity. A big well done by Tim Flaherty for once again organizing and orchestrating another very successful Scott Kirby Concert as well as to the many volunteers who helped Tim! Another sellout crowd was on hand on the 14 th for what has become an annual event that is looked forward to by our membership. Thanks Tim! As we move into September, I m sure we re all very much looking forward to more wind and cooler temps. And, there s certainly plenty of sailing activity packed into this month, something for everybody DC Cruise North (2-12 th ); Sharp s Island Race (10 th ); Fall Womens Keelboat Series (17 th ); Oxford San Domingo Cruise (24-26 th ); Small Boat Invitational (24-25 th ); Small Boat Fall Series on Thursdays through the 22 nd ; and Wednesday Keelboat Races through the 14 th with race results back at our clubhouse on the 14 th.
Many thanks to Zahniser s Marina for hosting our Wednesday Night Race Results again this summer. Along with the on-the-water events, this month s social activities include the Plein Air Festival Quick Draw Competition at the clubhouse on the 14 th (where professional artists will be painting Solomons scenes); Resumption of Commodore s Dinners (16 th ); and our Annual SMSA Crab Feast (24 th ). As we continue to bring in new SMSA members, please take advantage of upcoming activities to meet and welcome this month s new members who include Heather Howard; Roger and Deborah Cordell and their son Samuel; and Lissi Marquis and her children Sara, Rose, Alex, and Jazmine. The 3rd Friday in August we concluded nine weekly sessions of SMSA s Junior Summer Sailing Camp. Under the overall leadership of our Junior Chair, Eddie Sierra, and this year s Junior Camp Director, Terry Farman, over 120 kids ages 5 through 16 had the opportunity to learn and practice sailing skills that will serve them well for the rest of their lives. Thank you to Eddie, Terry and their instructor staff for a job very well done! And, a thanks also goes to our Vice Commodore, Jim Whited, who helped out often with emerging camp issues. As expressed by Jim W on the last day of camp, Thanks to everyone that worked on the camp program this year. It has been a great year for the program. So, there s at least 3 more good months of sailing to be had. Hope to see you all out on the water this fall. Jim Keen SMSA Commodore commodore@smsa.com The Clew, SEPTEMBER 2016 Page 2 www.smsa.com
