Santa Rio Quarter Horse Stud s magnificent Morn Deck Article by Kylie R. Melrose In 1999 Santa Rio Quarter Horse Stud s magnificent sire Morn Deck Q - 2160 was inducted into the Australian Quarter Horse Association Hall Of Fame in honor of his outstanding achievements and contribution to the Quarter Horse breed. Foaled on the 7th of October 1976, at Robert Baldwin s Quarter Horse Stud Euroka in Walgett, NSW, Morn Deck is a son of the super imported stallion Lion Deck Q - 880 who had won over $US 34,500.00 in AAA Stakes races in the USA. The superior racehorse was by Jet Deck (Moon Deck x Miss Night Bar) a world champion race horse and multiple AAAT sire. Lion Deck was out of Miss Ettaleo (Leo x Sugarette Bars) an AQHA and cutting champion, dam of race winners and multiple ROM producer. Morn Deck was out of the imported cutting mare Doc s Misty Morn Q - 594, a daughter of Jandon (Nahar x Right Lead, granddaughter of Man O War) and the world famous chestnut stallion Doc Bar who revolutionized the cutting horse industry. Doc Bar s sire Lightning Bar was an AAA AQHA champion son of Three Bars (T.B. x Della P). His dam Dandy Doll an AA mare by Texas Dandy x Bar Maid F. With his unbeatable conformation, temperament, movement, pedigree and his wow factor look at me presence, Morn Deck in 1979, at the Australian Quarter Horse Championships won his Two Year Old Colt Halter Class, Grand Champion Stallion or Colt title, prior to winning the Supreme Champion Exhibit at Halter. Morn Deck was exhibited at the Championships by Alan Larkin. Following the presentation of the Supreme Champion Exhibit, judge Mr Larry Myerscough commented, He s a super little horse!

In 1980 Morn Deck achieved an Australian first at the Australian Quarter Horse Championships by winning the Supreme National Champion Exhibit at Halter award for the second year in succession. Earlier on, Morn Deck who was handled by Phil Webb, was named the Champion Colt 3 Year Old and the Champion Stallion or Colt, before being named the Supreme Champion Exhibit at Halter. Morn Deck was originally placed third in the line-up in his 3 year old colt class by judge Mr Roger Reutenik who then placed Morn Deck in the winners position to take the title. This was not the only moment that had everyone on the edge of their seats, waiting for the result, as the Supreme Champion Exhibit title came down to two outstanding horses Morn Deck and the Champion Mare Win O Peg (imp), owned by John and Donna Hofmann. The judges Mr Reutenik and Mr Sparks Rust Jnr announced Morn Deck as the Supreme Champion Exhibit at Halter with an incredibly loud cheer from an excited crowd. Photo: Courtesy of Pete-Anne Tenney In 1981 he was sashed as the Champion Stallion, and was also judged as the Supreme Exhibit of the Victorian State Championships. Morn Deck holds AQHA Awards for Hunter Under Saddle - Register of Merit, Halter - ROM, Superior Horse, and Achievement, Performance - ROM, and Quarter Horse Champion, Western Pleasure - ROM, and a ROM in Bridal Path Hack. Morn Deck was one of the first Australian bred Quarter Horses to sire a National Cutting Horse Association Futurity Champion when Our Miss Morn Q - 4876 and Graham Lamey won in 1984. Together they also went on to win the 1984 Super Sires Cutting Futurity, 1984 Moonbi Futurity Final Qualifier, 1985 NCHA Derby Champion, Aggregate Champion of the Moonbi Maturity. Our Miss Morn holds many NCHA Awards and AQHA ROM s in Halter, Cutting and Performance and has also won many halter futurities and championships. Our Miss Morn is from Bogan Beulah and

was bred by Mr Kim Glasson of Tamworth, NSW. Over the years Morn Deck has dominated the AQHA Leading Sires List and it is no surprise when his exceptional progeny have excelled in all areas from the AQHA National, State and Royal Show ring, Cutting Futurities, Cutting Derbies and Maturities, Halter Futurities, Pleasure Futurities; Hack, Dressage, Cowhorse, Trail, Campdrafting, Barrel Racing, AJC winners, just to name a few. They hold around an impressive total of 13,780 AQHA Points and hold around 432 AQHA Awards. Morn Deck progeny have earned a total of 19 AQHA Performance Champion Awards, the first of his progeny to earn this prestigious award was his daughter Aba Deck Q - 4440, who was the first Quarter Horse to gain an AQHA Superior Halter Horse Award as a yearling. This 1981 chestnut mare from Abilene R2-424 (Dell Mingo (imp) Q - 118 x Juanita R1-237) holds 395.5 AQHA points. Owned by Bill Bowden, Aba Deck by 1983 had won two futurities, 14 championships and had won 22 times against an incredible 184 horses in her age group and open events. Over one week in July, 1983 this outstanding filly was grand champion mare or filly, all breeds, Toowoomba Show, supreme exhibit at the South Queensland Quarter Horse Show and was named the high point halter horse of Queensland. He took out first prize from 17 other entries in the class that was generously sponsored by Calf Manna and judged by Mr Robert McKay. Roc Deck is an exceptional grey colt by Morn Deck and out of the outstanding imported world halter champion Roxana Bar Q - 1158, who is the dam of the famous Roc O Lena Q - 1662. Roc Deck was shown by Mathea Usher and owned by Usher and Clifton. Roc Deck was sashed as the Champion Quarter Horse Stallion or Colt at the Sydney Royal Easter show in 1982, handled by Mathea. Morn Deck also sired the winning yearling filly at the 1982 Australian Quarter Horse Nationals, Our Miss Morn. At the 1982 Premier State Show, conducted by the NSW Quarter Horse Association at Dubbo Indoor Arena. Winner of the $5,000.00 Calf Manna yearling halter futurity, attracting 36 entries, was the multi-award winner Roc Deck, shown by Mathea, runner-up in the futurity was Our Miss Morn. At the 1984 NSW Premier State Show Morn Deck was named the Senior Western Pleasure Champion, Amateur Owner Western Pleasure Champion, Amateur Owner Bridal Path Hack Champion, both with Mathea aboard, the Reserve Champion Senior Bridal Path Hack and the Get Of Sire Champion when represented by Roc Deck, Trans Spanish Morn Q - 4390 and Aba Deck. Roc Deck was the Western Pleasure Graduation Stakes Reserve Champion. His full brother Bar Deck placed 3rd in the 2 year old Western Pleasure Futurity. In 1983 Bar Deck Q - 4478 won the yearling halter futurity at Tynong, just like Roc Deck had achieved the previous year. The grey stallion Bar Deck was foaled in 1981 and holds 135.0 AQHA Points and ROMs in halter, performance, and western pleasure and also has a AQHA Superior Horse award in Halter. In 1986 Bar Deck won the NSWCHA NSW -bred Cutting Derby at Scone, NSW. The Diamond and Champagne Versatility Stakes at the Premier State show, 1987 saw this awesome stallion win the Versatility Stakes at Comet.

In 1984 Roc Deck was sold to Stephanie Hale and John Chapman of Acacia Quarter Horse Stud in New Zealand for $52,000.00. The exceptional chestnut gelding Joker Deck Q - 10625 was foaled in 1983 from the War Beaver (imp) Q - 206 mare Lady War Pistol Q - 2711. Joker Deck, owned by Mrs Di Fender holds an incredible 1140.0 AQHA points and an enormous amount of AQHA awards including, Quarter Horse Champion, Amateur Versatility, Amateur Owner Champion and Champion Youth Horse. His Superior Horse award list shows how versatile this amazing competitor was in the show arena with the following, amateur hunter under saddle, amateur trail, amateur western pleasure, western pleasure, bridal path hack, halter, trail, trail class, and hunter under saddle. He holds many AQHA ROMs, Bronze Century awards and a Silver Century in Hunter Under Saddle. Another extraordinary horse by Morn Deck was foaled in 1983, a stunning grey filly named Morns Ruben Jane Q 10573. Ruby was from the Solid Play (imp) Q - 658 mare Naroo Quarter Leteasha Q - 2985. She was bred by Santa Rio and was purchased by Karen Gorrie as a rising two-year-old. Ruby is a Supreme National Champion, and it is believed that she is the only horse to ever achieve this title whose sire was honored with this title twice before her. It is also believed that she was the last female exhibit to be honored with this title. Ruby has won many AQHA National titles at both halter and performance. The cross of Morn Deck and Naroo Quarter Leteasha proved to be an outstanding success with the AQHA Champion 1982 grey gelding Morns L.A. Q - 7369 who holds ROMs in Performance, Halter, Trail Class and Western Pleasure. He is a multiple futurity winner. The 1985 grey gelding Deck The Chex Q - 14441 is also an AQHA Champion, multiple futurity champion and a champion youth horse. He holds ROMs in Performance, Halter, and Western Pleasure and was a Snaffle Bit Western Pleasure Champion at the CVWPRA Pleasure Championships. Morn Deck progeny also excite in the rodeo arena especially in barrel racing an event that they have dominated for many years. Marie Crisp s chestnut mare Peekaboo K Q - 6496, out of Pee K holds AQHA ROMs in Barrel Racing and performance and an all round barrel racing title. Foaled in 1981, Peekaboo K is the dam of Jessie Heinemann s Lil Malibu k Q - 31826 (2000 ABCRA Rookie Junior Barrel Racing Champion, 2000 ABCRA Junior Barrel Racing Champion, 2000 ABCRA Barrel Racing Average Champion). In the first round of the ABCRA National Rodeo Finals Jessie and Malibu timed 15.3 seconds, in the second round they stopped the clocks at a brilliant 14.95 seconds, breaking the 15 second time barrier.

Double Barrel Deck Buck Q - 15787 is simply extraordinary, foaled in 1985 from Two Eyed Purdy R1-9998, Buck holds 476 AQHA points in halter, team roping and of course his claim to fame barrel racing. In barrel racing Buck holds an AQHA ROM, superior horse, bronze, silver and gold century and a ROM for performance. Buck was named the 2000 ABHA Burn and Turn Barrel Racing Classic Division One Champion, 1999 AQHA Championships Barrel Racing Champion, 1998 AQHA Barrel Horse of the Year, 1998 and 1995 ABCRA Barrel Horse of the Year, 1998 ABCRA Barrel Racing Title, 1995 Runner up WPRA Barrel Racing Title, 1995 Mt Isa Rodeo Champion. Buck would never have been able to achieve this with out his partner in crime, Shona Tribe. Together they have earned over an incredible $90,000.00 in prize money. The same year that Buck was foaled another bay Morn Deck gelding was born, Clover Rambo Morn Q - 13824, whose dominance in barrel racing has been unbeatable. Rambo is from Gail Ritchie s Futurity Champion Clover Kamali. Rambo and owner Tania Schiller have won numerous barrel racing and all-round cowgirl titles including the WPRA Australian Champion All-round Cowgirl titles, Mt Isa Rodeo All-round Cowgirl Champion, WPRA Hi point champion and Premier State Rodeo Circuit Barrel Racing Champion. Rambo has a special recognition award from the AQHA, ROM s in barrel racing and performance. A Superior horse in barrel racing including a silver and bronze century in barrel racing and has a grand total of 255.5 AQHA points. Rambo holds the Australian Barrel Racing record on a full course with the ABCRA of 17.093 seconds. His prize-money earnings surpass well over the $120,000.00 mark. The 1987 chestnut gelding Impressive Morn Q - 19164, from Charleston (Lion Deck (imp) x Miss Janey Step (imp), currently owned by Peter and Deborah Hammond who had purchased the gelding from Vicki Schiller. It was with Schiller that Impressive Morn Presto showed his full potential as both a barrel racer and a campdrafter, together they won the Premier State Circuit Barrel Racing Champion title and placed as runner up to the 1999 WPRA Barrel Racing and All-round titles. Presto holds 192.0 AQHA Points and AQHA ROMs for performance, barrel racing, campdrafting, a Superior Horse and a Bronze Century in barrel racing. Impressive Morn was bred by Santa Rio Quarter Horse stud who have bred many barrel racing champions including Guns Of Morn Q 35339 a 1995 bay gelding who is a full brother to Impressive Morn. Guns Of Morn is owned by Cindy Browne who was also purchased from Vicki Schiller. Another outstanding barrel racing champion by Morn Deck who was bred at Santa Rio was the exceptional grey gelding Morns Ruben James Q - 27754. Foaled in 1992 from the dam of Morns Ruben Jane Q - 10573, Naroo Quarter Leteasha, Morns Ruben James holds AQHA points in halter, trail and western pleasure. Together with Bridget Brandenburg Morns Ruben James broke the Australian Barrel Racing record of 17.23 seconds held by Clover Rambo Morn and Tania with a new time of 17.21 seconds at the 2000 Mt Isa Rodeo. Sadly Morns Ruben James passed away in 2000. Morn Deck s progeny are too numerous to mention all or even half of their outstanding achievements. Some of his other extraordinary progeny include; Spectacular Morn Q - 14231, One Perfect Morn Q - 24583, Morns True Love Q - 20442, Ace Of The Deck Q - 16909, Classical Morn Q - 10574, Greenhill Decked in Chrome Q - 10925 and Greenhill Sparkling Morn Q - 21131.

Altana Classy Miss Morn Q - 44763 and owner Leanne Gray have been finalists in both the 2003 NCHA Non Pro Futurity and 2004 NCHA Non Pro Derby and together they earned the 2004 Non Pro Derby Reserve Champions at the Victorian Futurity. My beautiful chestnut Morn Deck filly Ritzy Morn Q 43648, from Coin Collection, is trained in cutting and placed sixth in her open halter class at the 2005 Australian Quarter Horse Championship show. In 2005 Santa Rio Quarter Horse Stud will celebrate the 29th birthday of Morn Deck. Over the years many things have changed at Santa Rio Quarter Horse Stud, firstly the studs relocation to the beautiful property Norwood in Tullamore and Morn Deck Lodge in Parkes, NSW. It has now been over five years since Brian Usher sadly passed away from cancer in February, 2000. Recently Mathea leased out her hotel in Parkes, the pub that both Brian and Mathea, along with their family had built up to be one of the most successful in the area. Mathea wanted the time to spend with her children and grandchildren. Mathea now has the time to spend at the farm, building up Santa Rio Quarter Horse Stud so as to continue to breed some of the finest quarter horses in the country and to pursue her love of cutting. For Mathea owning and showing Morn Deck has been a wonderful experience, It has been exciting, back in those days when we showed him it was the biggest buzz that you could get.
