Photo captions are optional and should be kept to 15 words or less. The Bulletin committee cannot be responsible for misspelled names of members, non-members and boats as we rely on editorial contributions from flag officers, etc.

Commodore Sterling Lau 4 Hi Folks! I would like to pass on a few bits of good information to our members that may be helpful and informative at the waning of summer. If you haven t heard, Wine Tasting is ready for a comeback to our club with the help of the Liquor Commission. We now have simple printed instructions at the HYC Office which are available to those who have the burning desire to educate others in the finer points of moving that glass full of wine in directions, other than just up and down, and simply guzzling the liquid within it. The directions even contain names and phone numbers of those at the commission who are ready and willing to help you do it right. Wow! While we re on the subject of tasting, General Manager Nick Woytenko, and Governor Jim Schmit have brought up a related subject which they named, Intoxication Prevention. Although it has never happened at our club, I m sure that Nick and Jim have probably heard about such a rarity occurring at nightclubs in nearby Waikiki. Some of our members have wholeheartedly jumped on the bandwagon and suggested the installation of a breathalyzer machine behind the bar with the tube protruding through the wood fascia next to the bell. This was only the first suggestion, and they are working on this project with the expectation of our member s support. Are you feeling kinda sluggish lately? That spare tire around your middle botherin ya? Is that why you don t have that spring in your step? Well KT Mellon knows what you need. You need Sunset Yoga & Pilates at HYC. If anyone can show you how to be in tiptop shape, it s KT Mellon. She s giving free lessons to interested men and women on the HYC lower deck lawn, starting August 25, 2010, at 6 pm. The classes will be on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of each month. Bring a mat, and wear comfortable clothing. Our club also has a Beautification Project which has been going on since January and has seen the completion of 43 beautification projects as we speak. His name is Jeffrey and he had been given his marching orders, step by step, by our General Manager since January. Here are a few examples of Jeffrey s completed work: (1) enhancement of hedges, plantings, lighting (2) strip sanded and varnished tables, bar stools, walls at entrance of galley, (3) replaced ceiling tiles of Board Room, (4) repair workshop roof (5) thirty nine other great renewals of our clubhouse and grounds. If you see Jeffrey working around the club, please give him a shaka sign and greeting of thanks. Another person who is a Grand Artist e, and treasure of the club, is well known as Michele Hansen. I saw her yesterday on the lower deck putting 3 large magnificent floral arrangements together for the beautification of our lower deck tables. She has the curiosity of a child genius, and the hands of a master, to make our troubled days a little bit better. What more could you ask? Aloha, see you at the club. Sterling Lau Commodore

Vice Commodore Charles Barclay Hello Everyone! On September 5th there will be a party to honor Beau Hunt s 100th birthday and Beau and Roz Hunt s 37 years of volunteer service to HYC. Special Events Chair Barbara Silvey is coordinating the party and can certainly use your help if you are available. Please see her column this month or the flyers posted at the yacht club. On Labor Day September 6th Hawaii Yacht Club hosts the Lahaina Return race. We will have a party at the yacht club for the racers and all club members. There will be dogs and burgers for sale and other good food on the grill, a live band (Johnny Rock Society), and plenty of good refreshments at the bar. Please come and enjoy the club that evening. The Monday Night Barbeque will not be held but will resume the following week September 13th. My son Hamilton and I will be racing aboard Steve Stock s Whisper. Wish us luck and thank you race committee! There will be a Pirate party on September 18th and Oktoberfest the 2nd. Last month I asked to hear your views about special parties. We received a mix of responses. Thank you, the heartfelt responses assure us Club members do care what happens. The results were given to the board and continue to come in. In general, people are concerned about helping the club make more money but not selling out the essential nature of a private club. We will tread carefully here balancing the needs of both sides and abiding the bylaws. The second Lipton Cup challenge will be held in October. If you don t know much about the Lipton Cup it is a historical trophy donated by Sir Thomas Lipton. If you are interested in how a man won by losing five challenges for the America s Cup between 1899 and 1930 I urge you to read two very interesting books, one is Temple to the Wind, by Christopher Pastore this is the story of Nathaniel Herreshoff s largest 90 footer Reliance. It gives a great portrait of the races that led to Reliance dominating Lipton s boat so that he did not field another challenge until 1920. This book is written by a sailor and is full of details on cup racing through the 20 s. The second book is a biography of Lipton. A Full Cup: Sir Thomas Lipton s Extraordinary Life and Quest for the America s Cup by Michael D Antonio. This book details Lipton s rise as a grocer and one of the first people who was famous for being famous. Lipton lost four times to Herreshoff boats designed by Captain Nat in 1899 and 1901 (Columbia), in 1903 (Reliance), 1920 (Resolute), and finally again in 1930. All of Lipton s America s Cup yachts were named Shamrock. Lipton s good sportsmanship and congenial nature made him a favorite with the American public. Sir Thomas Lipton made out by losing each time by and growing his American business. Till next month. kbh.harbormaster@gmail.com or call (808) 888-9494. Charles Barclay Vice Commodore HYC 5
