Commodore Howie Mednick 3 Aloha! From left to right : Karen Valentine, David Midkoff, Barbara Grande Spring is in the air, I can smell it! Oh wait, no, that s Boolie! (the smell of his delicious fish tacos) He, Susie and Craig Mitchell, and all their crew put on one hell of a sushi shoot out. The first day of the tournament was really rough though. I went out with Lee Seavers, and I have never been seasick before, but the seas were so rough, I tossed up everything including two Milk Duds I ate in the second grade, and one Tootsie Roll from first grade. You can read all about the event in Boolie s article. I mentioned in the last bulletin that somewhere therein was a list of the names of all the people who helped with the new dance floor. Somehow, that didn t get in, so here is the list of all the people you need to thank for the new floor: Mike Bullington, Tony Cole, Craig Wicke, Tim Ryan, Tom Bashaw, Larry Jennetta, and Al Bento. Robbie Buck and Lyn Silva did the cleaning and polishing of the brass foot rail. Mike Bullington and Tony Cole also put the new floor in the Ships Store. I want to give a special thanks to Jim Triplett for helping to get the movie studio that used our club to film The Reef, to pay for the new floors. We took up a collection for a pizza oven for the galley, since the last oven was not our property and it was removed. Thank you to everyone who donated and a special thanks to George Machado, Tim Ryan, Pete Richards and (drum roll) me, who all donated over $ each. The oven wasn t cheap, but now the club owns it! Here is a prime example of how and why things take so long to get done around here. In February s Board of Governors meeting, and after much research, we voted and agreed to proceed with a tank less water heating system for the club. A done deal, one would think. Then shortly thereafter, a bug was planted in the ears of the Governors that they could get solar heating done for a lot less. We looked into solar heating, and found it to be extremely expensive. We spent a lot of time and effort in coming up with the decision to go with tank less heaters, now the Board is in stall mode second guessing their decision. Once a decision is finally made, we need to run with it. When you keep second guessing your decisions, nothing gets done. As soon as the final bid is in, the project will be started, whether it is solar or tank less. Thanks to the membership for getting bids on both systems. I want to thank everyone who came to the Club on Sunday, March 7, and participated in the Commodore s Breakfast. My apologies to anyone who had a long wait for their omelet; however, I was a one burner operation (more repairs to deal with). I want to thank everyone who got up at the crack of dawn to help with breakfast Robert Sheetz, who was promoted to chief dish washer, and did a fabulous job; Craig Wicke cooked the sausage & bacon; Connie Gomez, Cashier; Mary Kaneshige, Jordan Kaneshige (Junior Commodore), and Morgan Merrill (Junior Vice Commodore), servers and set up; Kawika Warren, electrical repairs; Fred Samuels, Mr. Potato Master; Norma Jean Cavelle, Hostess; and my wife, Barbara, chief pancake and French toast technician. By the time you read this, the galley should be back to regular breakfast/ brunch service. I have received numerous complaints about there not being an ATM machine at the club. Your wish is my command. There will be an ATM machine installed in approximately two weeks so by the time you read this article, it should be in. I anticipate it being located by the Board Room, with security cameras on it 24/7. This is something we have needed for a long time. It will not only be a little revenue boost for the club, but it will give members and guests the opportunity to have money available to spend at the club should they so desire. If you have not been in to try the new galley, please do so. The menu changes periodically and everything is very good. I have not had a bad meal. If for some reason you should order something that is not to your liking, don t hesitate to send it back. The Chef doesn t know there is a problem unless you tell him. Mahalo Howie Mednick Commodore 3

4 Vice Commodore Sterling Lau Aloha! We ve all heard the admonition that It ain t over until it s over, but February was ridiculous! On February 28, Mardi Gras Night was scheduled as a way to clean the slate with a Blow-Out party at HYC. Shame on you if you weren t there to share the experience. We had one of the best hosts imaginable in Connie Gomez, whose pals helped to decorate the club beautifully and who arrived at the club dressed to kill. I was there with a long-beaked bird mask with girlfriend Paula Sumida dressed with feathers. Howie and Barbara Mednick were dressed to the nines while George Machado added to the spirit of things with an obligatory bead necklace. Lillian Russel and her gal pals were decked out like blonde Hollywood Queens, Woo Woo! Dagmar and Carlson Kauahi were also giddy and enthusiastic as the band started to get hot. We were all going through our dance repertoires as the clock ticked away with every tune. Slowly, we realized that nary a soul entered the club as we went through our paces and ended up on our seats. The grim realization set in that folks were not coming in and although no one said anything, we all quietly pondered what might have gone wrong. The ads were there, the music was great, and the delicious N Orleans food awaited people to eat it. A couple of sobering hours crept by but I refused to take my leave of our empty wonderland, determined to solve the mystery. Waikiki earlier. The dinner crowd was definitely sociable and lively as Gabe Aku Compehos added to the festivities with his great musical abilities. This celebration has provided a fresh start for the events to come this year and is a very positive sign. We are also looking forward to a wonderful Easter Sunday on April 12, Easter Sunday will be full of fun activities such as an old fashioned Easter egg hunt, as well as fun games and prizes for the keiki and adults. Dizanne will be there to display bunnies and chicks for the young and the young at heart. An Easter Bonnet contest with prizes will be awarded in the men and women s categories. That s right this is an equal opportunity yacht club. A fabulous brunch prepared by our galley will be the piece de resistance anchoring this day and all are recommended to attend. Oh, and by the way, in last month s Bulletin when I utilized poetic license and hyperbole, when I spoke of working with Howie as being hellish? that s a good thing! The flavor and direction of any story is very simple to discern. The story had a happy ending despite many challenges. That is a universal goal no matter who you are. Commodore Howie is admired for his tenacity during difficult situations, like February 2009 for instance, and especially because he just wouldn t quit. He literally fed the masses of HYC off of the grill. Hamburger anyone? Suddenly, the doors flung open like the coming of the Messiah, as happy voices of lively men and women already primed for fun echoed on the re-awakened dance floor and at the bar. By this time George s beads were lying limply around his neck and my black bird s beak had become soft and pale owing to my drinking MGD with the mask on. As the dancer s twirled, I heard that the crowd had just come from a concert given by.oh no, It couldn t be, but yes it was true in this case, that we had been BUFFETTED by the Margarita Cowboy Jimmy Buffett! As I left the club, I signaled a Mahalo to the still lively Connie Gomez on the dance floor for her hard work in volunteering to do Mardi Gras with the grace she displayed. I walked to my car in the last hour of an incredible February By the time you read this, you will be looking back at our celebration of St. Patrick s Day Dinner at HYC on March 17, A rarity is that our diners numbered over 100 plus people, and that our General Membership meeting ensued during the ono corned beef and cabbage dinner. The Membership Meeting would have also entailed a vote by the card-carrying Regular membership in regard to initiatives posed by the Board, but was not held for lack of a required quorum of 70 members. The Club s business reports were discussed and the dinner and show continued thereafter. The Celtic Pipes and Drums of Hawaii gave a stirring performance even after having marched in the St. Patrick s Day Parade in 4

KUDO s to all who volunteer to make HYC a nicer club! So many projects have been accomplished lately that the work force volunteer s have begun to overlap. The hardworking member s who accomplished the dock replacement, dance floor, Ship s Store deck, and Ladies Shower room had many of the same members who worked on more than one of these projects. Many thanks to all of you. The makeover of the Ladies Shower facility took a month less than the men s room and is hopefully finished as this goes to print. The job was much more pleasant as the odors emanating from the underneath s of the ceramics weren t nearly as bad as the men s room. This unannounced project began with little notice as the team materialized only a day before the demo. Craig Where s Wicke and Jim Pascarelli provided some the heavy duty tools that made the tile removal a bit easier. The job still sucked but, we got through it in two and half days. Then came the prep. Then more prep. Then even more prep. I could go on but you would fall asleep. Suffice to say, after getting the old hollow tile walls covered by Steve Sheetrock Stock, Tim Foxhole Ryan and Richard What s that odor Tatz, came through with the tiling, painting, and plumbing. Anyone seeing Tim scrape and paint the lockers in the lower deck certainly noticed his torture. Surely he wasn t enjoying it as much as he let on. Never a word of complaint though. Richard Tatz was, as usual, performing on his even keeled approached to the tile job, even with the leftover roughness of a remodel job. The electrical work was accomplished by Wally Sparkie Agnew as needed, and when called upon. He loves being asked to do things for the HYC. Dave Kaz Stewart was motivated by his lovely wife Kaz, to do the same magic on the louver replacement he did on the men s room. Under the guise of a hot lunch, Kaz delivered food to him while he was working. (We really think she was just checking up on him). Eric Grout Miester Beach appeared late in the days to do the grouting of the walls. We still aren t sure what he was listening to under those headphones. Steady Steve Hiestand once again rose up to fix all the inconsistencies of a re-model with his fine touch as the finish carpenter. Steve had the unenviable task of covering up all the things we couldn t during the rebuild. His efforts hide all the uglies. Thanks Steve. The new make-up benches were recovered by Ms. Tiffany Lopez who never quit smilin during her efforts. Many thanks to all of you and to anyone else who offered support and advice during the efforts. Sorry we couldn t incorporate all of your wonderful suggestions. The room just wasn t big enough. Besides, the colors just wouldn t have matched. Sorry if I left anyone out. Happy showers! Tom 5 5 5

10 Junior Sailing Scott Melander Aloha! Our spring high school sailing season is gearing up for the championship sailing regattas in April. For the past two months, 12 schools have been practicing for these events and the competition begins April 1. On Mondays and Wednesdays the Junior Varsity and Varsity 2 sailors will be sailing Toppers and 420s in the harbor and on Tuesday and Thursdays the Varsity sailors will be sailing offshore in 420s. Spectator boats are available to watch the offshore events and the club is a great place to catch the harbor action. We had a great regatta at Hickam Harbor courtesy of the Pacific Yacht Club and Commodore Bruce Ladeira. It was a rainy day but the wind was great, coming from the east at knots. The Honolulu Advertiser has some nice pictures and a write-up from the event on their website. Sailing for HYC in the race were Jordan Kaneshige, Kalia Schuster, Katherine Hughes, and Morgan Merrill. Our Saturday morning program is full of new sailors in the Toppers and a few intermediates in the el toro. Everyone has mastered the capsize recovery and we are moving on to upwind sailing. There will be a regatta on May 2 for all the new sailors to test their skills. Our summer program begins Monday June 1 with sessions continuing through early August. The full schedule and application are available on the HYC website: 10

Sailing Tony Miller Rear Commodore for Sail 11 Aloha Racing Sailors! Our first two ocean races for 2009 are in the books and, luckily, the wind god has seen fit to provide us great sailing conditions for both races. Participation for both races was good as well. Koko Head Race Results were as follows: Class A PH: 1 st FINS 2 nd GERONTIUS 3 rd PRIMA DONNA Class A ORR: 1 st FINS 2 nd BOOMERANG 3 rd Gerontius Class B PH: 1 st IKAIKA 2 nd WHISPER 3 rd DEMASIADA Class B ORR: 1 st Demasiada Class C PH: 1 st Urban Renewal The Race Committee dusted off the inflatables and the race was run without major incident. Special thanks to Al Bento and his crew who set the windward mark up inside of Koko Head and spent many hours guarding it. Also thanks to WYC for lending Ilima as the start boat. The Pokai Bay/KoOlina Race was held on March 21 st & 22 nd. Beautiful tradewind weather prevailed for both days with close fleet finishes. The fleet scattered on Saturday night for tie-ups. The boats that did make it to Pokai Bay had a wonderful time. There was plenty of deep water for anchoring and the local population was very friendly. You could feel the aloha coming from the beach. Pokai is a great spot and hopefully more racers will join the rest of the fleet in the future. After race camaraderie is part of the whole experience. Yours truly read the wrong draft of the SIs and inadvertently sailed inside the deep draft harbor entrance buoys. Oops! DSQ! I have learned my lesson. And I understand that Gerontius will now become part of the fishing fleet after a big ono catch on Saturday. Way to go, Gil! Overall Results for the Pokai Race are as follows: Class A PH: 1 st Boomerang 2 nd Fins 3 rd Gerontius Class A ORR: 1 st Boomerang 2 nd Fins 3 rd Gerontius Class B PH: 1 st Isis 2 nd Demasiada 3 rd Mel Temi Class B ORR: 1 st Demasiada Class C PH: 1 st Urban Renewal 2 nd Lei Aloha Class M: 1 st Manju Our Friday Night Races continue to be very popular. Thanks to Mark Olsen and his committee for their continued commitment each Friday. We need more members to volunteer their boats for Race Committee duty. If you volunteered your boat (power or sail) for just ONE Friday night race, we would be grateful. Also, you might enjoy seeing what it is like watching the starts of all these graceful sailboats. Without the committee boats, there are no races. i n s u r a n c e -A reminder that certificates of insurance for all boats racing in all boat races sponsored by Hawaii Yacht Club must be current and on file at the HYC office. Coming up April 4th will be the HYC Spring Regatta, the first traditional around the marks race of the year. Then on April 25th and 26th, HYC will be defending the Lipton Cup One. John Spadaro s Boomerang is our entry to retain the cup for HYC. Come on out and support your team. 11

Skipper Jeff Naus, his wife Patty, Mark Chips from California, and Barb Dove and Bill Beadle were the lucky crew. The voyage began on Sunday, February 15 at 7 a.m. and finished on Saturday 21st at 7 p.m. with drinks and dinner at the Hawaii Yacht Club. The week was filled with beautiful weather, exhilarating sailing, stunning views from anchorages and hundreds of humpback whales. Starting on Sunday, after a weather delay of 36 hours, Moonshadow crossed the 50 miles between Oahu and Lanai in 11 hours. Top winds of 32 knots apparent and top speed of 8 knots allowed Moonshadow III to reach Needles (Nanahoa) before sunset. Monday was a layover day to recover from the crossing and enjoy the beauty of the location. On Tuesday morning the anchor was raised (love that power windlass) at about 8 a.m. The morning was spent on a relaxing cruise down the coast, past the Barge Harbor (Kaumalapau) and around the corner to Manele Bay. Leaving the shelter of Lanai, Moonshadow III entered whale wonderland, that magic triangle between Lanai, Kahoolawe and Maui. Over the next four days hundreds of whales provided the entertainment by blowing, breaching, slapping tales, waving fins and giving the crew an insight into their lives. Most of the trip was spent in the Makena area, with day trips to Molokini, La Perouse and into Maalea Bay. Lots of snorkeling, whale watching and fun cruising! On Friday the Moonshadow III journeyed on its way north to Lahaina (see the video at youtube.com/watch?v=14ow4w504xq). Thirty knot winds and beam seas made for an exciting run up the Maui coast. After a brief stop at the dock we spent a comfortable night on a Lahaina Yacht Club buoy. Saturday morning found us heading home at first light. The winds were moderate on the starboard quarter. The following sea gave us a very comfortable push all of the way home and we covered the seventy or so miles in just eleven hours. GREAT TRIP! Also in February, Captain Bill Taylor and his sailing vessel, Tanya, won an award for Best Dressed Boat during the Opening Day festivities. Tanya showed up for the blessing decked out in flags and decorations which won the favor of the judges. Bill was especially surprised as he was the only HYC yacht in the ceremony and thought the trophy might go to a Waikiki Yacht Club member. Congratulations and Thanks for doing it right and bringing home the accolades Captain Taylor. Upcoming events include the First Sunday Brunch, the regular CVS meeting on the third Wednesday, with a presentation on Monk Seals by Dottie Bates, our annual Anniversary Dinner and an April cruise to Pokai Bay. Check out www. hyccruisingsociety.com for more details. Drop the lines and leave the harbor behind, there s lots of adventure to be had beyond the breakwater! 15
