Jean-Paul Sartre Commodore s Column By Steve Hall PLYC closes out each year with a calendar full of events and activities. Our Change of Watch was held on Saturday, December 6 and this Jib Sheet was delayed to allow pictures of the event to be included. Most of us who participated in the Holiday Cruise that began on the 8 th have returned to Port Ludlow and some will begin to decorate our boats for the lighted boat competition sponsored by PLYC member and Port Ludlow Marina manager Kori Ward. You will read of other PLYC holiday events elsewhere in this edition of the Jib Sheet. The Change of Watch, as it does every year, transfers the leadership of the PLYC Board to a new commodore Rear Commodore Buddy Hills is our commodore for 2015 and his board convened their first meeting on December 3 following the final meeting of the 2014 board. As the outgoing commodore, I would like to thank the 2014 board for their hard work throughout the year. If you look over the annual PLYC calendar of events, you will see that almost every month has planned activities. We have cruises, special events such as Training Day, Opening Day, summer socials, Change of Watch, etc. Volunteers organize all these events. Every day the Wreck Room is open, there are bartenders, supervisors, etc. who volunteer so that club members and guests can enjoy our facility. I extend a special thanks to those members who volunteer for our events, and encourage every member to contact any Board member and volunteer their time. In closing, I want to express my gratitude to Deanne Pedersen for her work as social director and Wreck Room manager for the past year. The countless hours Deanne has contributed to make our Wreck Room inviting for all of us are appreciated. Vice Commodore Olav Pedersen has reorganized the bar operation in addition to a remodel (within severe budget constraints) of our Wreck Room kitchen area to be a more efficient place to prepare for our function. Vice Commodore s Column by Olav Pedersen As I reflect on this year as vice commodore, it s been a pleasure to serve and I m pleased with what we have accomplished as a club.

2 Vice Commodore s Column by Olav Pedersen As I reflect on this year as vice commodore, it s been a pleasure to serve and I m pleased with what we have accomplished as a club. We ve done a great job of maintaining the Wreck Room and serving our fellow members and guests in a very welcoming and warm atmosphere. Enhancements to the facility and grounds have been completed during the year along with some changes at the bar. Neal McQuarrie has agreed to manage the bar and work with the Wreck Room coordinator to assure we continue to carry sufficient stock on hand for big events. We ve also had an increase in the number of MAST certified members, which gives us a larger pool of volunteer bartenders. Many thanks to everyone for pitching in and making our club a great success. I encourage all members to enjoy the club whenever possible and please continue to support our Wreck Room by volunteering. Have a wonderful Christmas season and prosperous 2015! Rear Commodore s Column by Buddy Hills The December Jib Sheet was delayed a few weeks this month so even though the Change of Watch has occurred, I am writing this article as my last as rear commodore. Our clubs premier event, the Change of Watch Dinner and Dance was held December 7 at the Bay Club. The theme of this year s event was Poseidon s Night Out. The motto I selected was: The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects it to change, the realist adjust the sails (a quote from William A. Ward, author). This event would not have been successful without the help of many volunteers. When I first took over as rear commodore, I was concerned how I was going to do it. Just one meeting with the people who signed up as committee leads on our volunteer board put those concerns behind me. The skill with which everyone took off and did their tasks is truly amazing. They have more creativity in their little finger than I do in my whole body. There is not enough room to list everyone s names. You know who you are so THANK YOU very much for volunteering to help with this premier event. Our band for the evening, The Tropics, who were outstanding, had most of us dancing the night away. This year has been quite a learning experience for me as the rear commodore. I could not have accomplished the tasks without the support I receive from my fellow commodores, board members, past commodores and members. That all of you stepped forward to help with events I chaired is a testament to the volunteerism spirit that helps keep our club going. I am looking forward to working with our new board as your commodore. We have a wonderful slate of officers and I know we will be up to the task of addressing the challenges ahead. I hope everyone has a wonderful Holiday season. Enjoy the festivities and please stay safe. 2

3 Fleet Captain s Column by Lorry Gilbreath Our sign-up for the December Cruise to Bell Harbor was full! The cruise departed as scheduled on Monday, December 8 and returned on Thursday. According to Cruise Director Bob Quick, 14 boats signed up and completely filled C dock at Bell Harbor. I know the all had a great time! I ve enjoyed this year serving as fleet captain. I have met wonderful people and had a great time with everyone at the PLYC activities. My cruise directors were amazing in selecting destinations and planning such fund events during the cruises. My job was so easy... I couldn t have done it without them. Thank you to all the cruise directors who helped make our 2014 boating season another huge success. Michael and Jane Armstrong were formally welcomed as members of the club at the Wreck Room on December 12 by Commodore Buddy Hills. They are recently retired and have moved from Burien to Edgewood Villlage. Michael and Jane also have a residence on Savary Island, British Colombia and look forward to seeing PLYC members on their ways to and from Desolation Sound and beyond. 6 Board Highlights from November 5th Meeting by Chris Dean First reading for Michael and Jane Armstrong sponsored by Brett Oemichen and Peggy Kulm. Second reading for John and Katherine Simpson sponsored by Steve Hall and Buddy Hills. The Board discussed and approved the 2015 annual dues to remain at $275. Treasurer BJ Luce reported club assets of $249,107. There was discussion of a member proposal that the board consider allowing business advertising in the Jib Sheet. The Board voted to not approve this recommendation as the Jib Sheet should reflect our club s activities and boating information, not advertising businesses that have nothing to do with the club s interests. The Wreck Room lease has been approved and signed with terms as in the past along with an additional year option. Vice Commodore Olav Pedersen announced that he will not be able to remain in the club as Commodore for He and his wife, Deanne, are relocating to Louisiana on personal business. They plan on leaving their boat at the Port Ludlow marina and will return to this area at some future date. Vice Commodore Pedersen announced that Debbie Svic will be the 2015 special events coordinator and Neal McQuarrie the WR bar manager. Rear Commodore Buddy Hills stated that if the membership approves his nomination, he would accept the commodore position for 2015, which the Board heartily supports.
