Definitions: I. Technique: a. Technique is the ability to perform a physical task or motor pattern. II. Skill: a. Skill is the ability to perform a task in a game setting or under pressure. III. Factors That Distinguishes Technique from Skill: a. Speed of execution. How fast should a skill be executed in a given situation? b. Pressure from opponents. How do opponents dictate how a technique is executed and any necessary adjustments for success? c. Spatial limitations. How does the space being played in require a different application of technique? IV. Possession: a. Possession exercises resemble a game realistic environment in which game realistic situations will appear. b. Possession exercises can be directional, in which teams are trying to go from one end zone to another. c. Coaches must incorporate the following criteria into their possession exercise: a) Progressions. b) Transition: Offence to defense and defense to offence. c) Variations. d. Rondo (Keep away game): Rondo is a training game in which the group who is possession has a numerical advantage. Rondo can be as little as 3 v 1 to 10 v 2 over another group of players. The objective of the group in possession is to keep the ball away from the defenders, while the defenders objective is to win the ball. Rondo develops players in the following ways: a) Decision Making & Number of Touches. 3

b) Execution of Skill & Technique. c) Mobility & Agility. d) Collective Understanding & Teamwork. e) Problem-Solving Skill & Creativity. f) Competition. g) Pressing, Anticipation, Communication and Shrinking the field on the defensive side. e. Coaches must keep In mind the following, while coaching a Rondo: a) First Line Break/Pass Pass to the person next to you. Easiest pass to make in rondo. Does not require a wide range of vision. b) Second Line Break/Pass - The pass will bypass the person next to you but does not split defenders. The second line pass requires a little larger passing vision. This is slightly more difficult than the first line pass. c) Third Line Split Pass - This is a ball that splits the defenders through the middle. This pass requires the most skill, creativity, vision and timing to pull off. In soccer the ultimate goal is to get the ball forward and score. Third line split passes help develop this skill. V. Small Sided Game: A directional game-practice situation involving GK playing teams less than 11 a side. It can be utilised for the coach to work technically or tactically and is ideal for developing the principles of play and team understanding. Working areas are adapted to suit the reduced numbers of players and official game rules are applied although some may be modified. The coach will usually work with one team and on one theme of work. VI. Functional Practice: A practice situation in which a player or small group of players develop an understanding of their attacking and/or defending roles, responsibilities and accompanying skills. Practice will be best sited in the area of the field where the player operates in a game and only players who are primary and secondary in the development of the role understanding are involved in the practice. VII. Phase of Play: A practice situation utilising the full width of the pitch but with a reduced length. Involves team units of players attacking or defending against opponents and is ideal for developing group, unit and team tactical understanding. 4

MSC Curriculum (U8-U10) Category: Technical: Passing & Receiving Difficulty: Moderate Am-Club: Markham Soccer Club Tommy Bianchi, Vaughan, Canada Warm-up: Technique (Dribbling + Passing & Receiving) (25 mins) -Small box: (7x7yrd), Big box: (20x20yrd), Distance from yellow cone to red cone (10-12yrd) -8 Players, 4 soccer balls. Can change to 12 players with 8 soccer balls. -First player on each red cone, dribbles to the yellow cone in front, performs a skill and passess the ball to their R side. After a few minutes and depending on the how successful the players are, the coach can ask the players to switch direction, in which players will dribble to the yellow cone, perform a skill and pass the ball to their L side. -Players will perform the following skills: 1) Dribble with R foot, Scissor with your L foot and change direction with your R foot and pass the ball to your R side with your R foot. 2) Dribble with L foot, Scissor with your R foot and change direction with your L foot and pass the ball to your L side with your L foot. 3) Dribble with R foot, Double Scissor with your L foot (Left, right, left) and change direction with your R foot and pass the ball to your R side with your R foot. 4) Dribble with L foot, Double Scissor with your R foot (Right, left, right) and change direction with your L foot and pass the ball to your L side with your L foot. 5) Dribble to the yellow cone with your right foot, perform a pull back click, and pass the ball to your L side with your L foot. 6) Dribble to the yellow cone with your Left foot, perform a pull back click, and pass the ball to your R side with your R foot. Coaches must pay attention to the execution of skill, technique of passing, technique of dribbling and communication between players. Skill Training (1v1 with Transition) (20 mins) Area: (15x15yrd). -Players on cones A and B are in the same team. -Players on cones C and D are in in the same team. -A player from the yellow team is going to start with a ball as an attacking player (either on cone A/B). Immediately a defender from either cone C/D will come in to defend. The objective for the attacking player is to perform a skill, beat the defender and dribble to the other side of the grid where his teammates are. If an attacking player loses the ball, he/she must right away transition into defending, and at the same time, a new attacking player from the opposite team will become active. -Players must dribble pass the cone on the opposite side. To start, players are not allowed to dribble through the side gates. -Things to consider: Technique of dribbling, execution of skill, distance between the attacking player and defending player prior to execution of skill, and most importantly how quickly players transition from offence to defence and from defence to offence. Possession (4v1) (20 mins) Area: (10x10yrd, depending on the age group and success of the players, it can be changed to 15x15yrd). - 4 Attacking players v.s. 1 defending player. The objective of the session is to keep the ball away from the defending player. - If the 4 attacking players finish 5 consecutive passes = 1 point - If an attacking player performs a skill such as a fake and passes the ball = 2 points - If an attacking player dribbles and performs a skill and beats the defender = 3 points - If the defender intercepts a pass or wins the ball back, that equals 2 points. **TRANSITION: If the defender wins the ball, he/she must right away find the coach - Can progress to 5v2 as well in which 5 attacking players keep the ball away from 2 defending players. - Coaches must consider the following: Players' technique of passing, recognizing the right moment to pass and/or dribble,

encourage players to dribble and perform a skill within a possession grid, focus on movement on movement of the players off the ball, encourage players to turn their head and scan the area of play. - After passing the ball players can not stand in the same spot for more than 3 seconds. - Encourage communication between players. - Make sure there are enough soccer balls close to the grid, in order to enhance the flow of the exercise. Small Sided Game (20 mins) Small Sided Game: Area: (40x60yrd) - Formation: 5v5 including GK. - Players will play a SSG in a 5v5 format (GK, 1 player in the back, 1 on either side, and 1 player up top). - Depending on the number of players available and age group of the session, it can progress to 7v7 with a 2-3-1 formation. - Things to consider: Recongnizing the right moment to pass and the right moment to dribble. Encourage players to perform skills in 1v1 situation. When coming out of the back first option to pass in a 5v5 format, is to the players on the side and second option is finding the striker. In a 7v7 format, first option is to find the players on the side, second option is to find the other player in the back and last option is to find the striker. - Focus on attacking and defending principles of play. - Attacking principles of play: Width, depth, Penetration, Creativity, Support and Transition. - Defending principles of play: Compactness, Delay, and Balance.

MSC Curriculum [U11-U12] Category: Technical: Passing & Receiving Difficulty: Moderate Am-Club: Markham Soccer Club Tommy Bianchi, Vaughan, Canada Technique: Passing and Dribbling Warm-Up - 20x20yd (big box); 7x7yd (small box) - 12-16 players; 4 balls - Player A passes to Player B, who recieves the ball on the half turn - Player B passes the ball to Player C, who turns and passes to player D - Player D dribbles to the yellow or green cone, and does a move to beat the cone, then passes to player A to restart the sequence - Coach teaches multiple passing combinations incorporating movement off the ball and creative passing Coaching Points: - Accurate passes, and good weight of the passes (2 second ball) - Players must shape their body when recieving the ball (open up/back foot) - Players must check away, and check to the ball, to immitate losing a defender in the game - Players must take the ball of their back foot Skill: 2v1 with transition - 30x20yd (make the grid smaller depending on the age of players) - 2 nets; balls beside both goals - One team starts by passing the ball to the other team - 2 attackers come out, against 1 defender (the player that passed the ball) - the attacker that shoots and/or scores, sprints off the field while the other attacker now defends 2 new attackers coming on from the other team - if ball goes out of bounds, whichever player touched it last defends the next 2 attackers that start off dribbling Coaching Points: - use skill to get to goal - dynamic movement from the second attacker - quick transition from offence to defence - creativity in the attack Possession; 5v2-30x25yd - 14 players; 7 in one colour, and 7 in a different colour - Coach passes the balls in; one ball in each grid - Each team of 7 sends 2 players to defend, making each grid a 5v2 - defenders stay defenders until coach switches them - team of 5 passes the ball around, trying to keep the ball away from the defenders - make 5 passes for 1 point, split the defenders with a pass for 2 points, split the defenders on the dribble for 3 points - if defenders win it, they try and pass between each other. They have to complete 2 passes to earn a point Coaching Points: - Encourage passing combinations to move the defenders - Dynamic movement off the ball - Quick transition from offence to defence; if player loses the ball, must try and win it back right away to keep defenders from getting a point

Directional Possession - 30x25yds (bigger or smaller depending on players age) - middle section 6-8yds - 14 players; 2 goalies, 7 players in one colour, 7 players in a different colour - Coach passes the balls in - 5v2; the two forwards for each team defend when the other team of 5 has the ball; if the two forwards pressing win the ball, they can go directly to goal, or they can try and possess the ball by passing it back to their team - the team of 5 needs to get every player to touch the ball including the goalie, before they can go forward to goal - one of the two forwards in the opposite grid can check into the middle space to recieve ball when their team of 5 is able to attack; all 7 players can attack - 7v5 in the attack to goal - defending team tries to stop the counter press Coaching Points: - dynamic movement off the ball - creativity to get all players to touch the ball (be prepared for opposition to mark players that have not yet touched the ball) - quick transition in the attack - players must shape their body to be in a position to shoot - Are the players making good decisions? (ex. possessing or going to goal)

U13+ Category: Technical: Passing & Receiving Difficulty: Moderate Start Time: 31-Jan-2017 11:25h Am-Club: Markham Soccer Club Tommy Bianchi, Vaughan, Canada Screen 1 2v2 TRANSITION WARM UP 20 mins Size of Grid: 15 yards x15 yards Equipment: 12 cones (marking each 5 yard incriment) 6 yellow pinnies, 6 blue pinnies, 10 or more balls. Theme: passing & receiving, risk vs. retention Objective: 2v2 in the grid, get the ball from one side to the other to earn 1 point. A penetrating ball from one end to the other (meaning player on the outside takes one touch to control, second touch to penetrate) earns 2 points. A player from the inside of the grid must replace the person on the outside each time they are played a ball. You can play a negative ball back to the player outside, they just have to enter and switch swith someone already in the grid. Can dribble in from the outside. Coaching Points: Technical- take ball off back foot, be on the half turn, give instruction in the pass ie: verbally say 'man on', 'time' or 'turn', and non verbal communication by passing to the back foot or the foot furthest away from the defender. Without the ball, can players be compact to deny splits, move quickly to deny easy passing lanes, try to lock the ball onto one side to force predictable passes, shift from pressing to providing support fluidly, win the ball and retain it by passing to an open outside player on their own team. Screen 2 NON DIRECTIONAL PASSING AND RECEIVING IN POSSESSION GRID 20 mins Size of Grid: 25 yards wide x 35 yards long Equipment: 13 cones (marking each 10 yard incriment), 10 yellow pinnies, 5 blue pinnies, 2 white pinnies, 10 or more balls Theme: Posession, transition, pressing Objective: 10v5 inside the grid with unlimited touches and 2 goalies to be used as neutrals on the outside. The 10 players are trying to make 20 passes in a row to earn 1 point. They can use goalies to help. The 5 are trying to win the ball back and make 5 passes in a row to earn 1 point. The first team to get to 3 points wins. GK's cannot be pressed outside the grid by the defenders. If the ball goes out of bounds we restart with the coach sending a ball into the offensive team. Progression: GK's stand on the inside of the grid, still patrolling their line, and can be pressured by defenders. Coaching Points: On offense- using 5 principles of attack- create width and depth, give supporting angles quickly, look for penetrating passes from one side of the grid to the other, use skill if in a tight area. On defense- using 5 principles of defense- restrict space, pressure, support pressuring player, channel play into greater defensive numbers, prevent the ball from being switched. Screen 3 2v2 TRANSITION SHOOTING GAME 20 mins Size of Grid: 14 yards wide x 36 yards long; 18 yard box is the midline of the grid Equipment: 6 cones, 6 yellow pinnies, 6 blue pinnies, 10 or more balls Theme: Transition Objective: 2v2 go to goal in the grid, 1 GK in each net. If a team scores the same players stay on and coach plays them a new ball. They can attack right away. The current defenders have to sprint off the field, tag the next two in line and they will run on to defend. If the offensive team shoots and misses they must transition and sprint off the field and tag the next two in line to defend. The coach plays a new ball to the two new offensive players. They do not have to wait for the defenders to be on the field, they can attack right away. Play until a team scores 10 goals. If a player runs onto the field before their teammates have run off

during a tranaition moment, give a free kick or penalty kick to the other team. Coaching Points: React quickly to loss or gain of posession- if the ball is lost do not spend time wallowing, run off immediately. Get compact and protect the net first. The goal keeper might be the first one to apply pressure if defenders cannot come out quick enough. If the ball is won, spread out and look for opportunities to shoot, make a 2v1 or penetrating pass. Screen 4 TRANSITION & COUNTER ATTACKING PHASE OF PLAY 25 mins Size of Grid: 2/3 of the pitch Equipment: 7 yellow pinnies, 6 blue pinnies, 1 white pinnie, 10 or more balls Theme: transition (counter attacking) Objective: Can the blue team win the ball in the middle and get forward into dangerous areas, finding the quickest route to goal. Coach stands in the middle of the field with the balls. Play starts each time with a turnover by the yellow team in the middle of the field. A flat pass is made and a blue midfield steps up to win the ball. After securing the ball with a good first touch his/her thought process should be: 1) can I find a penetrating pass to my strikers feet 2) can I create a 2v1 situation with a dribble OR beat a line with a dribble 3) can I find a pass into space behind the defenders 4) Do not turnover the ball Forwards thought process should be: 1) wingers get high and wide in the channels/ exploit space behind defenders 2) striker show to receive ball at feet or make a curved run to receive ball behind defender. Manage the starting positions of the defenders- they were in posession, which means they were high up the field and wide- now that they have lost it they must get compact as fast as possible, provide support and delay the forward pressure. Yellow midfields must recover and get back and help stop the forward attack. The blue team tries to score in the net. If the yellow team wins the ball they must score by passing the ball into one of the pug nets at half. If the ball goes out of bounds play will restart from the predetermined turnover in the middle again. Progression: Can add full backs to the blue team Progression: Can start with the turnover in anothe location on the field ie: the fullback on yellow loses the ball to the yellow winger. This changes the starting positions of all the players on the field. *Coach high percentage actions

Fino -8-10 Category: Physical: Agility Difficulty: Beginner Am-Club: Markham Soccer Club Tommy Bianchi, Vaughan, Canada Line Drils Doing line footspeed drills will dramatically increase the coordination of the young athletes. Drills like forward-forwardback-back, alki shuffle, quarter eagles, lateral 123 and crossover drills or any other variation of footspeed. the work to rest ration to work on quickness of the feet should be 10 seconds of work and 30-40seconds of rest, providing the athlete is working as quick as they can. Ladder Set up ladders with a cone about 5-10 yards away. Have the athletes do coordianted movements through the ladders. Movements such as forward in-in-out-out, lateral in-in-out-out, hop scotch, icky suffle, lateral hops, forward hops, single leg hops, or any variation that makes them work on coordiation and rythm with their arms and legs. For added coordination have them sprint out to the cone. To work on decision making, add two other cones and call out a colour as they get to the end and they have to run to that cone. For added memory work, say a combination of 2/3 colour of cones and they have to touch the cones in that order. Main focus is the cordination of their feet, with making sure their pattern in done correctly and work on teaching their arm movements at this stage. hurdle drills For Agility, set up 5/6 6inch hurdles and have the athletes shuffle step over the hurdles back and forth for 10 seconds. The should work on sticking the landing on one foot at the end of the hurdle line, and refrain from putting their second foot down, essentially working on direction change. As they progress with this activity, to encourage looking up, hold various colour cones and pinnies that the athlete has to call out as they are shuffling over the hurdles. Various drills could be side shuffle, high knees, two foot later jumps, and two foot forward jumps.

Jumps Another variation is the square jumping drill. Can be done with cones, lines or hurdles. Depending on the skill level of athlete, determines what jumping level they will be at.

Fino 10-12 Category: Physical: Agility Difficulty: Beginner Am-Club: Markham Soccer Club Tommy Bianchi, Vaughan, Canada Description Agility Group In this activity you are working in groups of 3. Two players on each side about 5 yards apart and one person working in the middle. Player working in the middle suffles back and forth between the players and touches the ball. They do this for aboout 30-40 seconds before switching the work player in the middle. After doing this a few rounds each, the next progressin is that the players on the outside can move the ball to the left or right or up or down to make the player in the middle's job more difficult to touch the ball. Again this work rate is about 30-40 seconds. Players are working on explosive movement, and turning quickly and getting to the other side as quick as possible. Agility Cones In this agility explosive deceleration drill, you have 4 cones lined up with different colous spaced out about 5 yards apart. One player per side. 1 of two set ups could happen. The first is the coach calls out the colour and both players have to move quickly and explosivley to get to the colour first. This work should be 20-30 seconds. The second variation is one player has to decide to move from cone to cone and the second player has to chase and and mirror the movements. The work should be about 20-30 seconds. Important coaching points are staying low and quick explosive movements from side to side. A cone can be added to each side that the player has to sprint out to on the coaches command at the end of the 30 seconds The next progression would be to stagger the cones instead of a straight line. Another progression would be that one of the players has a ball at their feet and they have to move quickly from cone to cone and try to lose their defender as they would have to in a game. This progression could be used in the linear pattern or the staggered pattern mannequin This activity focuses on quick powerful steps and quick stops. The player sprints from spot to spot, getting in a low defensive stance, getting the proper body shape that they would do in a game to angle the attacker. The focus of this is to get low, and move exceptionally fast, and stop very quickly when they get to their spot.

Fino 13+ Category: Physical: Endurance Difficulty: Beginner Am-Club: Markham Soccer Club Tommy Bianchi, Vaughan, Canada 300 These activities work on endurance and the aerobic systems. The work to rest ratio needs to be 1:1 or 1:2. Set ups cones 25 yards out. These asre 300 yard shuffles. The athlete will run at a 75-80% of their max the entire time. The will run to the red cone and back 6 times for a total of 300 yards. It is important to time how long it takes them to run. Dependant on their fitness level will determine whether you double the rest time or give them the same amount of rest time as their work time. Depending on fitness level, the reps should be 3, then a 2 minute rest and then another 3. Reps could increase to 4 or 5 after a few weeks of training. To make it more soccer related, you can add a ball to their feet. If bal lis added, speed and intesitty cannot suffer or be diminished. 5ths In this activity, the players are running a 5th of a mile. Set up comes just to the inside of the corner flag. The players start at one corner and run at a 80-90% of their max the whole way around the field. In this activity the rest is double the work time. Timing their run is important to make sure they are getting proper rest time and they are keeping the same intensity the whole workout. Reps are runs with a 2 minute rest in between and another 2. Sets could increase to 3 or 4 depending how the athlete progresses after a few weeks. It is important to emphasize long strides during the long stretch of the field and an active (walkling) breathing recovery while resting.
