The Spring issue of the Midland Master Athlete was delayed whilst a venue for the AGM was arranged. This has now been done and details appear within. Performances of two of our members are particularly notable, those of Angela Copson and Nick Rose and our congratulations are extended to them One of our stalwart supporters in past years, Mary Wixey. has died at the age of 96. She was a prominent performer in her younger years and was well-known for age records she achieved. Our best wishes are extended to all MMAC members who will be competing in Spain in the coming months. EDITOR; LOU SATTERTHWAITE geoemm@tiscali.co.uk Angela Copson (MMAC) has won the Best European Masters Athlete of the Year Award. She will receive her Award during the Opening Ceremony in Madrid on Sunday 18 March at 19:15, in the Centro Desportivo Municipal Gallur. Tom Phillips has been alerted. B & I International XC N.Ireland. Amongst many notable performances, England s Nick Rose shone; winning his 65+ age group by a considerable margin, and the ever present Angela Copson obtained her 10 th consecutive age group win. As in the relay report, there is a full report of this fixture, with photographs, within our online BMAF magazine. Mary Wixey Obituaries We were saddened to learn of the death of Mary Wixey aged 96. Mary was among the early members of MVAC (later MMAC) and was a staunch supporter of events for many years. She competed in field events until she was in her early nineties and along the way she established many age records. Mike Kelsall Long time Burton AC coach and athlete, Mike Kelsall has died after a short illness. Mike re-joined MMAC last year. Mike ran in the MMAC Cross Country Championships in January and brought home the Burton team for the M55 Team gold. Mike competed for Burton in the Midlands Vets league for over 20 years, competing in the sprints, high jump and hammer. He combined his love of the short distances with running the London Marathon many times.. He was 8th in the UK M60 high jump rankings last year and had retired in the autumn and was looking forward to having more time for training as most of his time was going on coaching youngsters. Mike had been planning to go with his wife, Judy to compete in Malaga. 2

IRENE NICHOLLS As Irene Nicholls has stated that she will be standing down as Chairman, at the forthcoming Annual General Meeting, the committee of MMAC, at their recent meeting, agreed that this could not take place without an acknowledgement of Irene s great contribution to the administration of the Club which has ensured its success for many years. She has given her time, expertise and wise counselling at all times. In many instances she has taken on roles, in addition to her own as Chairman, acting as Treasurer until Martin took office, as Membership Secretary until Graham took office, as well as being Secretary and organising events and any other tasks which needed doing. She will be greatly missed but we hope, most sincerely, that she will continue to give her advice when required and her support at all times. She is pictured with Vice Chairman, Rita Brownlie, and Margaret Simpson, Editor, at the meeting, when a presentation of flowers and a gift voucher was made. LONDON MARATHON Bob Care will be taking up the MMAC allocated place in the London Marathon our good wishes go to him for a successful and enjoyable performance. MIDLAND MASTERS ATHLETIC CLUB ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING MINUTES of the 45 th Annual General Meeting held at the National Forest YHA Headquarters, Moira, Swadlincote, on Sunday 23 April 2017 at 1.30 0pm. The Chairman welcomed everyone present. She expressed her thanks to Phil Owen for his excellent work in arranging the venue and event. PRESENT I.Nicholls (Chair), R.Brownlie, M.Smedley, MS.Smedley, L.Satterthwaite, G.Oliver, E.Nicholls A.Lloyd, B.Owen, P.Owen, J.Liddington, G.Lamb, J.Lamb, M.Simpson. APOLOGIES Apologies were received from: P Barber; Julie Bellfield; Lynn Bellfield; Dave Phillips; Martin Wilkinson. REPORT FROM THE CHAIR MINUTES The Minutes of the 44 th AGM were approved unanimously proposed David Oxland, seconded Adrian Lloyd. MATTERS ARISING There were no matters arising. My thanks to everyone who helped this year to keep our Club viable. It has been touch and go at times but we have, in the main, managed to fulfil our brief and provide competition in all disciplines to our members. Yes, that is our raison d etre, to provide competition. Once or twice we nearly had to pull the plug on events such as the Cross Country and the Track & Field Championships but we got by with the help of a dedicated band of helpers who stepped forward. Thank you to our supportive officials and clubs without whom we could not operate. The enthusiastic support of athletes who enter to enjoy their sport is commendable and there is a small number who are able to combine competition and officiating without compromising their performance. However, without the time consuming administrative support of your committee the Club will soon be in danger of collapse. We are grateful for offers of help but it is difficult sometimes to process these without some idea of the interest and background experience of folk. Most of our members participate with their Open Club and have perhaps helped to organise some events or have transferable skills. Perhaps you have some knowledge of race organisation which would be useful with the Cross Country, perhaps you are good with communication which might help with recruiting officials. The Track & Field Championships require a great deal of work behind the scenes. Entries collated in order that a programme can be prepared and printed and officials notified. Liaison with the Stadium to check facilities and equipment and these monitored on the day. I am so grateful to Elaine Mee, Vivienne Kirkland and Phil Owen, who, when we were on the verge of cancelling the T & F for 2017, came forward to find officials for the event. However, the lack of specific Cross country and Track & Field Secretaries to lead and develop teams who can move the events forward year on year is beginning to take its toll and with the best will in the world we cannot continue with this crisis management. We are also in need of a General Secretary to deal with the small number of meetings and administrative requirements. The past year has highlighted the need for assistants in the various roles. Illness and accidents have placed a strain on the Newsletter Team and we thank them for their continuing to keep in touch with us in times of personal difficulty. Margaret is retiring as Minutes Secretary after many years of sterling work, my personal thanks to her for her support. We welcome Kate Satterthwaite to the team. Graham and Jill Lamb have added their talent to our committee and Graham has taken on the Membership Secretary s mantle with seamless ease, his report indicates the satisfaction of the membership, thank you to you both. Martin Wilkinson, our outgoing President and Treasurer, has been a tremendous personal support to myself and the Club. His wise counsel and oversight of our financial affairs leaves us in a very healthy state and his report makes for most encouraging reading. 4

Our incoming joint Presidents, Lynn and Julie Bellfield, have been members of the team for a number of years and we hope that they will enjoy their term in office. Thanks to our athletes for their support for our events and congratulations on your successes in the Inter Area events and at national and international level. We are proud of you. Congratulations also to Angela Copson BEM, who joined us as a very inexperienced athlete a few years ago and has subsequently progressed to world beating performances. What a role model. This will be AGM Minutes 2017-2- my last year as your Chair, if elected. I have been very privileged to be involved in your world of athletics but I think the time has come for a younger and physically stronger leader to take your great Club forward.irene Nicholls Chair MMAC A vote of thanks to Irene was proposed by Adrian Lloyd, seconded by Mick Smedley and endorsed by all present. PRESENTATION OF ACCOUNTS & TREASURER S REPORT distributed. Available on request. In the absence of the Treasurer, who had recently had surgery, his report was read by the Chairman. Subscriptions have increased but income from competitions has decreased. We no longer benefit from the BMAF event on Sutton Park and we have agreed to keep competition entries fee the same for another year. Bank interest is much lower reflecting the current very low interest rates and I have not chased any investments, as the returns would not be worth the effort. The BMAF fee was calculated at a different time of year and there was a small increase in the fee. Once again, the MMAC committee has been very frugal in claiming expenses for their hard work travelling to meetings. We have supported more members in England vests and those competing at Lee Valley Inter- Area. Your honorary membership secretary has declined taking the honorarium for his professional time. Paypal/Stripe costs have reduced with the new subscription method may more decided to pay by cheque! This leaves a significant profit of 4327 for the year. I do not recommend a rise in subscriptions and we could afford to keep competition costs the same for another year despite the overall loss for competitions. Bank Balance 31 December 2016 Current a/c 2981 Deposit 24,113 Stripe 1873 Paypal Nil Assets 4122 The Accounts were accepted and thanks expressed for Martin s excellent report. MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY S REPORT Graham Lamb reported membership currently at 21 April 2017 as 568 compared wit 539. That increased to 632, 67 were first claim members MMAC. A few of the new members had joined to compete in Perth and were Australia based. In October he contacted lapsed members and reminded people about 2017 membership Of 80 lapsed members 30 have said they are injured or are going to renew shortly and a few awaiting possible location moves. With 2018 World Championships being in Malaga and the Indoors in Madrid the membership might increase. The major frustration this year has been trying to get internet access to Lloyds system. While it has been a challenging year getting on top of the process, I have got a lot of thanks from members and that has been rewarding. REPORT ON NEWSLETTER Margaret Simpson reported that four issues had been produced since the last AGM and the next issue would be ready in the next two weeks. She was especially grateful to Lou Satterthwaite who had, in spite of his own health problems, produced N/L 251 while she was in hospital REPORTS FROM DISCIPLINE SECRETARY Jamie Liddington reported a poor response to his appeal for officials. It was agreed that he should contact the MCAA office so that a list of events could be circulated. Rita Brownlie and Graham Lamb to advise procedure 5

TEAM MANAGERS REPORTS Mick Smedley said that all information was on the web site. The 2017 event will take place in Derry NI in November. It was noted that MMAC offers the most generous financial assistance of all areas, for members selected to represent England. Nick Rose has indicated that he would like to take part. Elaine Mee had worked extremely hard on the Inter-Area indoor and outdoor events and had been ably assisted by Rita Brownlie. Tony Porter had done a very good job organising the Vets. League. ELECTION OF OFFICERS The outgoing President had awarded the President s Trophy to Dave Phillips. As neither was present it would be presented at the T&F Championships in June. A memento of his term of office would also be given to Martin. The vice-chairman, Rita Brownlie, took the chair for the election of Chairman. As there were no other nominations it was agreed, unanimously, that Irene Nicholls should be Chairman. The Gb Team For The European Indoors In Madrid Is Around 370 Athletes And 45 Are Midland Masters. With Several People Out There We Should Have A Lot Of News For Future Newsletters Graham Lamb Cross Country Championship report A cold and snowy day when I set off for Wolverhampton and the MMAC Cross Country Championships. Driving conditions got worse as we travelled from Burton, with snow settling and it looked like it would be a slippery course. As race time approached however the snow turned to rain and it just became muddier. With the weather and illness it was a smaller field than expected that started the race. I soon dropped towards the last third of the race and got into my rhythm. On the second leg I saw Angela Copson in front of me and had a quick chat as I passed her. Later on that lap the leaders lapped me as they battled for medals. As I came round the course to begin my fourth lap, Angela passed me on her way to the finish in another impressive run. Being in the oldest age group doing the 4 laps it was pretty quiet on my last lap. With only a few of my club mates and other people out on the course. While I knew as the only team my club would win the M55-65 age group, it was a nice surprise to get silver. Which I put more down to some over 60s not making the start, then a tremendous run. It was a well organised event by Wolverhampton & Bilston again and thanks to them and the other MMAC members who helped marshal and organise the race. 9
