Intrductin The purpse f these guidelines is t assist diagnsticians and surveillance field fficers t safely and apprpriately disinfect and decntaminate equipment and persnal items in cntact with suspect Emergency Plant Pests (EPPs). Please nte that this dcument cvers general infrmatin n disinfectin and decntaminatin principles and that specific perating prcedures will need t be develped t ensure that disinfectin and decntaminatin methdlgy, chemical use and general hygiene methds are relevant t the suspect EPP, hst crp and risks assciated with a particular activity. 2. Critical issues There are a number f critical cnsideratins that must be taken int accunt t achieve effective disinfectin and decntaminatin f equipment and persnal items when dealing with suspect EPPs: Apprpriate use, decntaminatin and disinfectin f persnal prtective equipment (PPE) and ther resurces/equipment. Cntainment/packaging prcedures fr samples and dispsal methds fr infected material. Use f the apprpriate disinfectant fr the particular suspect EPP. Safety prcedures fr the use f chemicals: Versin 2.0 Issued 01 December 2015 1

All disinfectants applied t skin must be safe fr use n skin/registered fr this purpse and used in accrdance with directins. Any disinfectants used must als have inhalant risk assessments carried ut. Safety Data Sheets fr specific disinfectants shuld be referred t. Resurces taken int a cntaminated area must nly be thse that are necessary t perfrm duties and/r can be disinfected after use. Cameras/mbile phnes etc. can be placed in a zip-lck bag where the item can still be used withut remving and the cntainer can be disinfected. Decntaminatin prcedures fr leaving the site including the fllwing cnsideratins: Set up the decntaminatin site prir t entering the prperty. D nt re-enter a vehicle r the clean area until decntaminated adequately/decntaminatin prcess cmpleted. Wrk Health and Safety, PPE and decntaminatin must be implemented accrding t risk and in accrdance with lcal instructins. Park all vehicles ut f the cntaminatin zne where pssible. If this is nt pssible, alternatives must be investigated prir t the activity s t minimise risk f cntaminatin/spread, e.g. wash-dwn facilities n the site. Drainage and dispsal f cntaminated waste water and/r chemicals fr each site. Training f persnnel in disinfectin and decntaminatin prcedures prir t visiting the site. 3. Hygiene and disinfectin The fllwing hygiene and disinfectin elements shuld be taken int cnsideratin prir t and during wrk n the site: Select and set up a persnal decntaminatin site in the clean area brdering the dirty area befre entering the prperty. It must allw staff t be able t exit withut re-entering a cntaminated r ptentially cntaminated area. A line can be used t mark the clean area and the ptentially cntaminated/dirty area. Use a tarp in the clean area t place equipment n. Psitin equipment fr: 1. Entry, 2. Use n the dirty side (including spare glves, bt cvers etc.), and 3. Use n exit. Ensure disinfectants and equipment fr persnal decntaminatin are ready fr use befre entering the cntaminated area. A scrub tub (which must be an apprpriate size and depth t enable persnnel t stand in) filled with an apprved cleaning slutin diluted with water as per manufacturer s instructins and apprved chemical spray bttles must be prepared and ready t use, as well as brushes and wipes etc, and sap and water apprpriate fr skin. Sme disinfectants can pse inhalant risks s apprpriate risk assessments must als be carried ut. 3.1 Persnal prtective equipment Apprpriate use f PPE is critical t prevent spread f EPPs between cntaminated and nncntaminated sites. Cnsideratin shuld be given t the fllwing pints: Dispsable veralls and glves shuld be wrn when sampling infected material n site. Bt cvers r cleanable rubber bts are advisable. Put n prtective clthing in the clean area befre entry. Sme equipment, such as bt cvers and dispsable glves may wear quickly. Therefre it may be apprpriate t wear tw pairs and take a spare int the dirty area, if needed. PPE shuld be prperly wrn, ensuring all hair is cvered and veralls, glves, bt cvers are sealed/held in place with duct tape. Once sampling is cmplete, remve all cntaminated items and clean r duble bag them prir t leaving the decntaminatin site. When remving PPE; where pssible the glves, veralls, bt cvers etc. shuld be carefully rlled back, turning them inside-ut. All dispsable items (glves, head cvers, bt cvers, veralls) shuld be duble bagged and dispsed f as per quarantine requirements. When duble-bagging, each bag needs t be decntaminated after sealing. Ftwear shuld be either remved and bagged, r thrughly cleaned and disinfected befre leaving the prperty. Scrub sil ff the base f ftwear befre stepping int a disinfectin bath cntaining an apprpriate disinfectant (e.g. Virkn, chlrine slutin, Phytclean). Disinfect hands and expsed areas, then wash hands, face and disinfected skin in clean water with detergent r sap. 3.2 Prtable equipment All equipment that is brught nt the site must be decntaminated and disinfected accrding t apprpriate prcedures. The fllwing pints shuld be cnsidered: Ensure that sil, plant material and ther large cntaminants are remved in the decntaminatin prcess, prir t disinfectin. Disinfect implements immediately after use with an apprpriate disinfectant (e.g. Virkn, Phytclean, 80% v/v ethanl r 0.5% v/v available chlrine slutin), as apprpriate. Ensure an apprpriate cntact time t achieve required disinfectin. Equipment will ideally be disinfected n-site; hwever if this is nt pssible then it must be securely bagged fr later disinfectin befre leaving the prperty. When duble-bagging, disinfect each bag after sealing. 3.3 Samples Samples shuld be managed in accrdance with the Cllectin f suspect Emergency Plant Pests guidelines and Transprt f suspect Emergency Plant Pests guidelines. Cnsideratin shuld be given t the fllwing: All samples shuld be securely packaged as required, with at least ne layer f suitable packaging applied in the cntaminatin zne. The samples packaged within the cntaminatin zne shuld be sealed and decntaminated, adding the next layer f packaging when in the decntaminatin area.
