Florida Atlantic University MARCHING OWLS www.fau.edu/marchingowls Dr. Sean Murray, Director The season has begun The Marching Owls are off to a great start for the 2014 season. The 2014 season is underway and already the Marching Owls have been extremely busy. I am always amazed at beginning of a Marching Owls season. Different students from all across campus, in all different majors come together to represent their university as musicians. They take time out of their degrees to be part of a group that is an icon for the university. They begin a week before classes and continue until the December. The level of commitment is extraordinary, and it is all done in an environment of friendship and musical excellence. I hope you enjoy this month s newsletter. FAU Marching Owls Q&A Have questions about becoming part of the Marching Owls? Here are some answers. Q: How can I be in the Marching Owls? A: Marching Owls is an ensemble-class in the Department of Music open to any student from ANY major who meet the following criteria: 1. Official Enrollment at Florida Atlantic University, or admission as a transient student from a qualifying institution, such as a Florida state college. 2. Successful completion of the audition process. 3. Permission of the director to enroll in the ensemble-class. Q: Will Marching Owls interfere with my school work? A: This is a common question from most incoming students. Rehearsals are scheduled at a time of day when few other classes are in session. With careful planning you should have plenty of time to participate in the Marching Owls. As with any college activity, you will be responsible for keeping track of your time and keeping up with all of your academic work. Most current members attest to having no issue when it comes to other class work. Plan ahead you can do it! Q: Are there auditions to be in the group? A: We make every effort to accept as many students as possible for the Marching Owls. The Marching Owls is made up of around 70% non- music majors and these students are a very important part of our program. 1. For wind and percussion players, a musical audition will be held at the very beginning of the training session to determine which part you should play. You will be asked to sight- read, to play a chromatic scale, play several major scales and a prepared piece which is available on the website under the Auditions link. 2. Auditions for Color guard and Majorettes take place on campus in April. You may also send in a video taped audition. Dates and requirements for that audition are posted online at www.fau.edu/marchingowls 3

Q&A (continued) Q: Is there a cost involved in being a Marching Owl? A: Each member of the band is required to purchase certain items that will be used throughout the season. These items include a t- shirt, polo shirt, shorts and a backpack. They will be sold on the first day of pre- season training.the costs of these items are kept as low as possible. There is no instrument or uniform rental fee. There is no band fee or fair share cost. Q: Is there a scholarship for being in the Marching Owls? A: Yes! We are extremely fortunate to be able to offer a $500.00 scholarship, which is given to each member of the Marching Owls upon successful completion of the class. Q: How do I receive more information on the Marching Owls? 2014 Half- Time Shows This season the Marching Owls will be performing 4 different shows. Show #1- The Music of KISS Show #2- The Music of AC/DC Show #3-10 th Anniversary Show Show #4- Earth, Wind, & Fire A: You may visit us at www.fau.edu/marchingowls. Under the tab prospective members there is a link marked request information. Fill out the form and you will be placed on a digital mailing list for all Marching Owls information. For up- to- date information and photos from the season you can find us on the following social media sites: Facebook: The Florida Atlantic University Marching Owls Instagram: @faumarchingowls Twitter: www.twitter.com/faumarchingowls FAU Colorguard and Majorettes If you have interest in being in the color guard or on the majorette line, we would love to have you join us. Marching Owls Member Spotlight Pre-Med Biology Major Miti Dorzeus Shows her Owl Pride Miti Dorzeus was a part of the first Marching Owls to perform in FAU s football stadium as a freshman four years ago. As she enters her senior year, she looks back on what it means to be a Marching Owl. I marched in my high school marching band and absolutely loved it. So when I was accepted to FAU, I immediately tried to find information regarding the marching band, and signed up for the class. It was one of the best decisions I made at FAU. I love waking up early every game day to go to practice -- putting on that Marching Owls uniform and marching down the breezeway for owl prowl. I love playing the FAU fight song proudly as the football team walks into the stadium and I love that feeling of excitement that I get every time I am handed new music and drill. I feel so lucky to be a part of this amazing team of talented people. Being in a University marching band is more than just the playing and the marching. You become a crucial part of the school's tradition. You make amazing friends, and have the time of your life. Every year you are a part of something special whether starting a new tradition, or passing down old ones to the new members. I would recommend marching band to any student because it is an opportunity to join something bigger than you are and a chance to make amazing friends, all while doing what you love.
