January 2014 Flying Boats? The Upper Keys Sailing Club is excited to be the host of the International Moth United States Class Association Winter Series, presented by 11th Hour Racing! What, you ask, are Moths??? Moths are small, one person sailboats with wings. Foiling sailboats, similar to the America s Cup catamarans, actually rise out of the water on foils as they speed up and are extremely fast. They recently held their World Championship in Hawaii and an American named Bora Gulari won overall. Bora, in addition to other well known racers will be attending one or more of the Moth regattas to be held at the UKSC. UKSC is excited to be hosting the winter series for these unique boats. Decorated with lights and a giant piano keyboard, created by Helen and Larry Koenig, boat parade spectators were treated to live music with our own Dockmaster, Sallie, on the piano, along with Bruce McCord on sax, and Guy Lange, George and Betsy Edwards singing holiday favorites. We know that Conch Cat was better looking than all the other boats! Commodore Kahler accepted the 1st place trophy for Best Overall Entry, which is on display in the clubhouse. Thanks, in addition, to the following members that worked on the boat and made the winning entry possible: Min-Ai and Chuck Nihart, Wavy Davy and Lindi Adamusko. Race committee will need your help putting on these events. Ginette Hughes Fleet Captain from the rear commodore The Board of Directors has decided to suspend the Friday night half price happy hour during the regatta season. We may start the Friday night half price happy hour again in April. The main dock is showing some wear and needs maintenance. We ve contacted the original contractors and they ll figure out what needs to be done. Meanwhile have a Happy and Healthy New Year.
