Commodore's Corner by Paul Hanson Let me start off this month s article by stating that there is water, water everywhere. The lake is continuing to rise as I write this article. The lake is expected to crest at 4ft above the seawall on Monday March 31st. But there is more rain in the forecast for early next week which could cause a further rise in lake levels. Precautions are underway to secure the docks and other items in their winter storage arrangement to hopefully guard against any damage or loss during the period of high water. With the above being said, the club may experience a delayed opening with regards to the Spring Work Party and Harbor opening. I will continue to update all of you as we all watch the lake levels. With the lower boat parking lot being under water it will require some additional clean up when the time comes for the Spring Work Party. I ask that the members of the club prepare to help out to get the club open in one day as it will take a bit more work than usual. There will be more on this in future correspondence. Also an important note is that if the club is delayed in the harbor opening that you must keep your boats out until such time as the harbor is safe for boats to come in, this means after the Spring Work Party takes place. So if your boat is in storage you may need to make arrangements for your boat to stay longer in its current storage location. The Commodore s Staff Meeting will still be April 5th from 9am to 11am. This meeting is for the Commodore s Staff and Fleet Captains to get together prior to the start of the season. The meeting will be at the Edwardsville YMCA Meyer Center 7348 Goshen Road Edwardsville, IL 62025. Please be on time as the meeting will start promptly at 9am. Also, due to high water, the tie down replacement project will be delayed until the water levels drop enough to get started. I will use the list-serve as a means to communicate with the club, so if you know of a specific person that does not have email, you might keep them abreast as to the situation with the Work Party & Harbor Opening. I would ask that everyone pass the word along. I look forward to seeing all of you at the lake soon. CSA Adult Sail Seminar Wednesday, Thursday, Friday June 18, 19, 20, 2008 The Adult Sailing Seminar is filling up fast. We will have fifteen different Instructors that the students will be working with. Most of the three days will be on the water, at the tiller or crewing. Remember what June is like at the lake? The breeze will be blowing, sun shinning, water glistening all while learning to capture the wind in your sails and propel the boat forward without the aid of a motor. Sailing is a skill not just to learn, but also to develop. This class is the way to do it. We have a limited number of tillers so get enrolled now. Splinters from the Board 3 by Rick Bernstein Your Board of Directors held their March meeting at Director Leimbach s and for the first time in months, there wasn t a driving rain or snow storm impeding our ways to the meeting. The meeting highlights included: 1. Brock Tuffli has taken over as CSA s treasurer 2. CYC is paying $60 per weekend to use our boats for Saturday racing The board approved Director Beier going forward with having the bathroom floor mud jacked. We reviewed 2 bids from reputable companies and decided on Helitech. The work is necessary with the state not having any funds in their budget, therefore the ball is in our court to cover the cost. 3. Director Hill is organizing his list of volunteers and equipment to put in the new tie downs on the boat parking lot 4. Director Leimbach is working with CSA member Jack Klug in evaluating our boat insurance. 5. We have two companies interested in advertising this year in the Marks and our web site: Edward Jones is returning again and John Huhn s Homeworks Construction Company. 6. The upcoming CSA election for the Board has two nominees; John Bordes and current board member Andrea Sepanski who is seeking re-election. 7. We have finalized changes in the new CSA handbook which you can find on our website. The board discussed and recommended what we will call a disaster communication protocol in the event of something catastrophic occurring at CSA. What I would like to state is, should anyone outside the membership come to CSA or attempt at contacting you regarding something that happened or is happening at CSA, please refer them to the Chairman of the Board, i.e. Rick Bernstein; Commodore Paul Hanson or Vice Commodore Dave Crosby. Our goal here is to make sure accurate information is distributed by sources that have the correct information. Thank you for keeping this in mind. Finally, CSA is saddened at the loss of two friends in the past few weeks. Art Ashcroft, CSA s 2nd Commodore passed away on Friday March 28th. Art was one of the original founders of CSA after starting his sailing career at Valley Sailing Association on the river before moving over to help form CSA in 1971. I remember many occasions Art working his weekends with my dad on the various CSA projects in the early days of our clubs birth. We are also saddened at the loss of Silas Mckinley Notice who died on March 20th following an automobile accident near New Orleans. Silas was a passionate sailor and outdoorsman for many years. He been changed. Due to the flood the following calendar items have sailed a Hobie 18 and lived in St. Louis. Cat Tales Happy Spring, Fleetsters! Unfortunately, our Spring rains have left us floating, and not in a good way. At time of writing, the water is a foot over the seawall. I, for one, am hoping the big sump pump of the Corps will be able to decrease that volume by the end of April! Remember, workday is April 12th. Hope to see your smiling face, all ready to clean up our club! As you may have heard, the Tornados were displaced out of the Olympics by monos. Cats, for the time being, have lost the Olympic battle. On a great note, however, the 33rd America s Cup is being held on 90 foot by 90 foot Multi-hulls! Team BMW Oracle is representing America, sponsored by the Golden Gate Yacht Club. We in the States primarily held the America s Cup for the first 132 years of the Cup s regattas but we haven t brought it home since 1992. Perhaps with these gigantic multihulls we will finally bring it back where it belongs. On another exciting front, the Leukemia Cup Kickoff party was a success. Guest speaker Terry Hutchinson was in attendance. He has a very impressive sailing resume, including tactician for Team New Zealand during the last America s Cup, and had a wealth of information to contribute. It is always a pleasure to have someone of his caliber join our party and share their experiences. We had 3 CSA teams attend the 2008 Performance Midwinter Championship down in Pensacola, FL March 8 & 9. In 2nd place of the I-20 class was John MacDonald and Andy Humphries, 6th was Mike Hill and myself, and 8th was Joe Leonard and Daniel Paoli. We set a record: in all of Key Sailing history there has never been a race started on time. It simply isn t done. Well, Race One was started promptly at 1100, with only 3 of 25 boats on the line. That caused quite the stir once the race committee and the sponsor returned to shore (the sponsor wasn t one of the 3). The winds were great but the temp was chilly. We reached a high of 52 degrees on Saturday and spent most of the time much cooler with cloud cover. Unfortunately, the schedule of events included Sat 6 pm: dinner and story by Holly Conklin and we turned out to be the story. Mike T-boned the newest boat in the fleet: Bob Curry s F16, fresh out of the box. Both boats were in danger of sinking but we both made it back to shore with minimal intake of water. Bob was done for the regatta and was an AWESOME sport about the accident. Mike performed duct tape magic and we sailed on Sunday with silver racing stripes on the port hull. Joe and Daniel had adventures of their own on Sunday. During the first race on Sunday Joe s trap set broke, the boat flipped and he was separated from it and Daniel. Swimming wasn t working and he had to be picked up by the crash boat. Once they were pointy-end up, Joe and Daniel had to head to shore. Watching the flip from a distance, I knew something was up as Joe knows how to right a boat in record time, and his was spending way too much time sideways. John and Andy had fairly clean racing (hence a 2nd place). I ended up with a nice black eye from our collision and have had to convince my patients that I truly am a battered woman, but by my own choosing and certainly not by my husband! The winds were good, the food was excellent, and as always, Key Sailing knows how to party! Quick, there isn t much time to get your chores done before sailing season starts again! See you at Workday, Recruiting Day and the Fleet meeting! 4 Boat ownership - Standing fully clothed under a cold shower, tearing up 100-dollar bills.

Cabin Fever The old adage that March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb didn t work so well this year. March did come in like a lion all right, but the lion decided to just linger and linger making us wonder if warm weather would ever get here to stay. Who would have believed that we would experience such widespread and catastrophic flooding. Hope no CSAers homes were caught in the rising waters. The weather on Easter was another story -- snow, then sun, then sleet, then more snow! Here is a new twist to an old children's song: "Rain, rain go away; come again some other day; all the sailors want to play." We certainly also don't like the idea of an expanded Carlyle Lake, especially when it covers the lower parking lot and won't let us get into to CSA on time. Whoever out there did a dance to the rain gods had better stop and start hopping around in homage to the sun. We need the sun! Moving on to a much more pleasant topic -- Jack and Shirley Firse hosted our St. Patty s party on March 15. What a delightful evening we had! Shirley and their daughter, Jill, who is a culinary arts graduate and a caterer, prepared the delicious Irish meal. With lots of good eats to be consumed, a couple of people ate a little too much. The roving camera caught them stretching out and taking a rest break. I won t name any names, but you can see who they are in these photos. We were also delighted to meet the feathered and four-legged members of the Firse family: Tito, a beautiful Double Yellow Amazon Parrot, and, Josie, a little dog with a big personality. Too bad more Cabin fleeters weren t able to attend and enjoy the festivities. Several members were still hiding out in Florida and other places, and a few caught the old flu bug. Anyway, we had a great time, and a huge THANKS goes to Jack, Shirley and Jill. Now moving on to April, which is a very busy month for us. Docks Day and getting CSA up and running are the top priorities. And, hopefully, we ll be able to get our boats back in their spots the last weekend. Don t forget our Wine, Beer and Cheese Party at the Hollands on April 12. Rumor has it that Chuck Jones will be following in the wake of Mark Twain. If all goes well, Chuck will be heading down the Mississippi on his Bristol 24. Unlike Mr. Twain, Chuck plans to sail on to Key West and up the East Coast as far as he can get by June 1. What a trip!! We wish him the best of luck and hope he keeps us apprised of his adventure. by Shara Taylor 5

Fly i n g Scottlebutt by Betty Struckhoff What a great turn-out for our fleet meeting on March 16. Our house was bursting at the seams with Flying Scot folks talking about sailing, traveling, sailing, books, sailing, gardening, sailing, etc. Fleet Captain Jim was true to his word on the agenda party, meet, eat, party. During our meeting we assigned responsibilities for the Egyptian Cup regatta. See the web page for details. We also discussed promoting the Flying Scot fleet at CSA. Based on feedback from new crewmembers Chris and Linda, we decided to schedule a fleet social at the lake on a Saturday soon after Visitors Day. This way we can invite interested visitors, as well as Adult Learn-to-Sail graduates, to come back to sail some more and meet more friendly people. Carol said she would make the Margaritas! The Keslers, Jan, Felicia and Betty are heading up an ad hoc promotion committee, so contact one of them with your ideas. Please send your registration in for the Leukemia Cup. We need at least 5 boats registered so we will be scored as a fleet. This is a great opportunity to warm up for the Egyptian Cup while we support a great cause. Also, make your motel reservations now for these weekends and for the Whale in September. See the CSA calendar for dates.. With so much going on early in the season, we will have another fleet meeting at the lake over lunch on Sunday April 27. This will be the day to bring the boats out and raise the masts. Specific dates will be determined. JP Bordes will be putting on a race clinic for us on May 31. He will be giving instructions from the vantage of a power boat where he can go from one sailor to the next, giving pointers on sail trim, boat handling, steering, etc. We'll also work on starts and mark roundings. Our spec boat, Y-2672 is race ready. Anyone interested in it can try it out right here at CSA starting Apr 26. Ads will be in local papers as well as the various web sites. The boat is ready to go and you can be in the water and sailing in 20 minutes. Trailer, covers, 2 sets of sails all for $2800. See any Y sailor for further info, or to take a demo sail. Nominees for Board of Director Andrea Sepanski Jean Pierre Bordes Hello CSA Members, My name is Andrea Sepanski and I would ask for your re-election vote in bringing my 30 plus years of CSA involvement to our Board of Directors. Since 1974, I have been associated with CSA in many forms. From running our club's first JuniorSailing Camps in the late 80's and early 90's, to serving as your Commodore in 2000, I have been involved in many facets of the wonderful growth of CSA. Aside from the activities associated with CSA, I been an active racer and have traveled the country participating in events ranging from local to national competitions. I believe I have been and will continue to be a valuable asset to CSA Board of Directors for a number of reasons: First, I know all the board members and believe I have a good working relationship with them all. Secondly, from my years of being a Flag Officer and Snipe Fleet Captain, I already know how the processes work at CSA. Third, I am 40 plus years young now; I continue to have experiences, knowledge and ideas that I believe compliment the board. Finally, CSA continues to be a great part of my life, and I want to help it grow, be stronger and continue its path as a premier sailing facility. I would like to ask for your vote, as I promise to continue to be an active participant on the Board, and be proactive in whatever necessary change are needed and required for CSA to continue to move forward. 7 Jean Pierre Bordes started sailing at CSA in the mid-1980s as a member of the Sea Scouts. He was subsequently active in intercollegiate sailing on the east coast for 4 years. After returning to St. Louis, he has been a corporate member of CSA, in the Y-Flyer fleet, for the past 18 years. He served as Y-Flyer fleet captain for 4 years, and has been the Y-Flyer fleet treasurer for the past 6 years. At the national level, he has served as AYFYRA Area 1 VP, for Missouri, Kansas, Illinois, and Wisconsin. Jean Pierre has served on the CSA Commodore s Staff, and has often been Regatta Chairman for the Y-Flyer Beer and Boats Regatta. He frequently serves as PRO in the Sunday racing program, and participates in race committees and protest committees for many one-design regattas at CSA. Jean Pierre and his wife Stacey regularly compete in CSA club races, as well as in regional and national regattas, including a 2nd place finish in the 2005 Y-Flyer National Championship. Jean Pierre also enjoys frostbiting in his Laser during the winter months, racing in other one-design classes and keelboats, and bicycling on days when the wind isn t blowing. Outside of sailing, Jean Pierre is a successful entrepreneur, having co-founded two companies, which have created many jobs and brought new venture capital to the St. Louis area over the past decade. His most recent startup, Ageia Technologies, was recently acquired by NVDIA Corporation, the worldwide leader in programmable graphics processor technologies, which is keeping the entire Ageia engineering team in St. Louis.

Optis f o r Sa l e o r Lease For the fourth year in a row, CSA will continue to develop their Optimist Junior Sailing Program. The Opti is a fantastic boat for beginning juniors and also a competitive racing machine for advanced sailors through an established regatta circuit for competitors up to the age of 16. With the Opti as our primary beginner boat at camp, and through the very successful Harbor Mice Sunday program, CSA now has an extremely promising crop of young sailors leading us into the future. This year again, families will be allowed to lease Optis from CSA. The lease form is elsewhere in this issue. Members are, however, encouraged to take a much more economical tack than the lease The idea of boat ownership. Every Opti owned by CSA is for sale. Each boat has an individual price that is based upon original price. Several good boats are available for as little as $700! Consider the cost comparison of the two options and understand that the price of ownership is a better option of lease. US Sailing In-House Instructor Course There will be a US sailing course offered at CSA over the span of the two weekends of May 17-18 and May 25-26. Please note that the second weekend is the Sunday and Monday of Memorial Day weekend. The course will presented by Instructor Trainer John Sepanski, who has led and certified close to 75 instructors over the past two years. This course is offered for all CSA members wishing to instruct sailing as a representative of Carlyle Sailing Association. The US Sailing goal of this course is to produce highly qualified, certified instructors. This would include all instructors at Junior Camp and instructors of Adult Camp. Successful acceptance and completion of this course is awarded with a substantial liability insurance policy that covers the instructor while in the service of Carlyle Sailing Association and it is strongly encouraged that all who teach sailing should protect themselves and their club. The best part of this course offering is that it is presented at an in-house class/certification price of $180. This cost includes all course materials, the full certification and the instruction provided through the full US Sailing course that would usually cost $325. Due to the in-house nature of this course, all organization and administration details will be handled by John. He will organize the application process along with the delivery of all course materials. This is a strenuous and demanding course. Care should be taken in the completion of the application to present one s self accurately and to evaluate personal abilities. US SAILING TRAINING PROGRAM SMALL BOAT SAILING LEVEL 1 INSTRUCTOR COURSE THE FUNDAMENTALS OF TEACHING IN A SAILING PROGRAM COURSE INFORMATION & PREREQUISITES A. Small Boat Sailing Level 1 Instructor Course Goals The US SAILING Small Boat Sailing Level 1 Instructor Course, approved by the U.S. Coast Guard and NASBLA, is designed to provide sailing instructors with information on how to teach more safely, effectively, and creatively. The goal of the program is to produce highly qualified instructors, thereby reducing risk exposure for sailing programs at yacht clubs, sailing schools, community boating programs, camps, parks and recreation programs, high schools, colleges, American Red Cross programs, YMCAs/YWCAs, Scouts and other organizations. Topics covered in the course include: classroom and on-the-water teaching techniques, risk management, safety issues, lesson planning, creative activities, ethical concerns, and sports physiology and psychology. B. Prerequisites for Entrance Into the Course 1. Experience in sailing small boats such as prams, dinghies, multihulls or daysailing keelboats. 2. Experience in operating a safety boat. This skill will NOT be taught at the course. Instructor Candidates lacking adequate experience should either seek opportunities for practice or attend a US SAILING Basic Powerboating Course. Candidates not passing this portion of the course or other tests will receive a Plan of Improvement, re-testing for which carries a fee of $50. 3. Current First Aid and Adult CPR. We will accept First Aid and CPR from providers approved by the U.S. Coast Guard (list available at www.uscg.mil/hq/gm/marpers/examques/fa.pdf). A state licensed EMT or M.D. whose CPR certification is renewed annually is also accepted. 4. Ability to swim 50 yards both with and without PFD. The accepted swim strokes are: front crawl, breaststroke, side stroke, elementary backstroke, back crawl and butterfly, as defined by the American Red Cross. Floating and treading water are not considered to be swimming strokes, and sculling or finning as a way of moving through the water while floating or treading is not considered to be a swimming stroke. 5. Ability to exhibit appropriate personal and interpersonal skills. 6. Current US SAILING Adult Individual Membership. 7. Completed Application Form accompanied by appropriate course fees (and any late charges). 8. Completed US SAILING Medical Form provided to Instructor Trainer BEFORE the course begins (either mailed with application or presented on the first day of the course). 9. Completed Safety Boat Skills Self-Assessment Form provided to Instructor Trainer BEFORE the course begins (either mailed with application or presented on the first day of the course). Forms 8 and 9 will be provided with course material. 10. National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) Safe Boating certification. Visit www.nasbla.org for a list of approved providers. Candidates holding a current USCG full or limited Master's or OUPV license are exempt from this requirement. Candidates have a responsibility to meet the boating laws of the state where the course is being held prior to being able to operate a powerboat in conjunction with the course. For those applying for the CSA course, there is the possibility of a course offered at CSA. Please indicate at the bottom of the application if you are interested in such a course. ATTENDANCE AT ALL COURSE SESSIONS IS MANDATORY. ABSENCE FROM ANY PORTION OF THE COURSE EXCLUDES THE INSTRUCTOR CANDIDATE FROM EVALUATION. C. Successful Completion of the Course includes passing the following practical and written tests administered at the course; a positive evaluation also must be attained in certain areas. The practical and written tests each stand on their own, and each must be passed in order to pass the course. The determination as to whether a candidate passes or fails rests with the Instructor Trainer. In addition to Pass or Fail, a third option is a Plan of Improvement. Re-testing for Plans of Improvement carries a $50 re-testing fee; re-tests are scheduled with specific representatives of US SAILING and must be performed within a specific time frame.

Candidates must complete the following requirements during the course: 1. Sailing Skills Practical Test: Execute, with comfort and confidence: Rigging, leaving a dock/beach, starting, stopping and speed control, safety position, getting out of irons, sailing backward, tacking, jibing, steering with sails and weight, proper sail trim, judging laylines, capsize and overboard recovery, returning to dock/beach, unrigging. 2. Safety Boat Operation Skills Practical Test: Execute, with comfort and confidence: system, equipment and starting checks, leaving and docking, high and low speed maneuvering, holding position upwind/upcurrent, backing, pivot turn (360 degree turn within boat s length), anchoring and/or making fast to a mooring, overboard recovery and landing alongside a moored boat. 3. Swim/PFD Practical Check: Swim 50 yards in instructing clothing both with and without a PFD, tread water two minutes while performing a minor task (such as tying a knot). The accepted swim strokes are: front crawl, breaststroke, side stroke, elementary backstroke, back crawl and butterfly, as defined by the American Red Cross. Floating and treading water are not considered to be swimming strokes, and sculling or finning as a way of moving through the water while floating or treading is not considered to be a swimming stroke. 4. Marlinspike/Seamanship Practical Test: Demonstrate ability to tie the following knots and hitches: Figure-8, bowline, square knot, sheet bend, clove hitch, two half hitches, rolling hitch, cleat hitch. Also coil and throw a line. 5, Personal and Interpersonal Practical Skills: Demonstrate professional conduct, an open-minded, positive and enthusiastic attitude, appropriate appearance (clothing, footwear and tidiness), participation in discussions, collaboration skills/team player, confidence and ease of manner. 6. Classroom Presentation Practical Skills: Demonstrate lesson preparation, with clear, logical and accurate content, good voice enunciation/clarity/volume/pace/pitch, good non-verbal communication (gestures and body language), effective visual aids, good timed presentation(s) with introduction, conclusion, demonstration, clarity and use of notes, use of multiple pathways techniques, and ease in handling questions. 7. Land Drill and Water Drill Teaching Practical Skills: Demonstrate good class positioning, control and positioning of safety boat, demonstration skills, effective on-the-water communication, evaluation, and feedback technique. 8. Written Exams: A closed-book exam on the Small Boat Sailing Level 1 Instructor Manual, Teaching and Coaching Fundamentals for Sailing and Basic Powerboating, Safety and Rescue. A passing grade of 80% is required on all exams. 9. Attendance at all portions of the 4-day, 40-hour course. 10. The Instructor Trainer s Overall Evaluation. D. Training Materials There are approximately 600 pages to read - so plan on studying prior to and each night of the course. Instructor candidates will be sent the following materials: 1. Small Boat Sailing Level 1 Instructor Manual 2. Teaching and Coaching Fundamentals for Sailing (TCF) 3. Basic Powerboating, Safety and Rescue 4. Start Sailing Right! student book. 6. Review questions for the Instructor Manual/Start Sailing Right, TCF and Basic Powerboating, Safety and Rescue tests. 7. Other handouts and course information as applicable. E. Validation of Small Boat Sailing Level 1 Instructors Validation will be for three years providing First Aid, CPR, and US SAILING Adult membership are kept current. Instructor validation is renewable. F. Minimum Age Limit for Small Boat Sailing Level 1 Qualification 1. A US SAILING-recognized Small Boat Sailing Level 1 Instructor must be at least 18 years old. 2. To attend a US SAILING instructor course, the instructor candidate must be at least 16 years old. Upon successful completion of an instructor course, the 16 year old will be designated a Sailing Assistant until turning 18, at which time he/she must contact the Training Office to obtain an instructor card. G. Course Fees $325.00 Small Boat Sailing Level 1 Instructor Course.(In this case replaced by the in-house fee) US SAILING Adult Individual Membership ($60 for 1 year, $110 for 2 years, $145 for 3 years). For family memberships, 1 level 1 instructor is allowed per family membership. $50 Late fee for applications received in the office less than one week prior to the first day of the course.
