August 2016 Newsletter visit us at www.taywood.org July meeting The meeting was a hands on day wi Scott Murray, Nick Tindell and John Milne manning e laes. N.B. all laes are now fitted wi guards made by Scott Murray. I ink you will agree at John s finished product looked beautiful. John en demonstrated turning plastic to make a pen. John was making a bowl from a burr and encouraged several of e members to help wi e process. Scott started off making a natural edged bowl. John demonstrated his sanding techniques.
Scott went on to make some coasters and encouraged some of e members to have a go. Scott showed us his tool he used to mark e bottoms of his bowls This gives a nice clean cut wiout tearing e edges of e grooves. Nick started by making eggcups. The almost finished bowl looked like is. Scott intended to finish it by embellishing e natural edge wi pyrography which would enhance an already lovely bowl
This is a bowl Nick also turned. He explained at he would leave e split as a feature in e finished bowl. Dave Beatt was kept busy selling sandpaper, sharpening members tools and teaching members how to sharpen eir tools. and he too soon had some of e members having a go. August Meeting The August meeting, starting at 12:00, will be a demonstration by Scott Murray. July Competition The June competition was for a child's toy. The competition was judged by Nick Tindell who spoke highly of all of e entries.
Norman Beaton was in first place wi Walter Dick in second and me in ird. John Milne and Sheila Gibbs also put in entries. We had two laes in action most of e weekend which drew a steady crowd of interested viewers. Unfortunately due to a mix up wi dates Sheila had made a pair of goblets, which were e subject of e June competition, raer an a toy August Competition The August competition is for six coasters and a holder. There are no specifications for is competition. Glamis Extravaganza We were at e Glamis extravaganza on 9-10 July wi our new marquee and gazebo from e lottery fund grant. They were much easier to erect and dismantle an e old marquee and ey were completely waterproof, which was just as well considering e weaer over e two days. We had a good selection of member s turned items for sale but sales of turned items and raffle tickets over e two days were not brilliant. However, considering e weaer and e lack of people about at times, we did O.K. We met some potential new members which was a good ing too. Thanks to all e club members who gave eir time to help wi e event. Items for sale Sandpaper The committee have organised a supply of Sanding Clo made in Poland by Klingspor J-Flex 361.
