Dive tables and Computers Safety briefing Eglin Dive Flight June 22, 2017 Adrian Mijangos
What is safer, diving with Tables or computers? It Depends... Tables are more conservative, so technically, tables are safer
Dive Tables Pros & Cons Pro: Tables us a model that is very conservative because it assumes you will be at the max depth the entire dive Con: Your NDL time is reduced compared to a computer Con: PADI tables are base on Haldane s decompression model for Navy divers (physically fit, young men)
Dive Computers Pros & Cons Pro: Longer NDL times because the computer is calculating your nitrogen absorption in real time, base on several factors. Pro: Visual and/or Audible warnings when NDL time is reached. Pro: Dive Log feature allows you to view your dive profile after the dive. Con: The battery can die during a dive. Con: Some can be difficult to operate or user-unfriendly.
Dive computer algorithms Not all algorithms are the same. AH-L8 ADT, Recreational RGBM, ZHL-16C, Pelagic Z+, DSAT Some are more conservative than others Factors taken into account are: Dive time, depth, gas mix (air/nitrox), water temperature, diver age, Exertion level, Risk level (Standard/Moderate/Conservative) What algorithm does YOUR computer use? How conservative is it? What factors does it take into account?
Dive computer algorithms SimplyScuba.com (Algorithms and the modern diver)
Homework Learn what algorithm YOUR dive computer uses (it s in the User Manual). Google it Learn what factors does it take into account. How conservative is it? Practice using it the day before a dive if you haven t used it in a long time.
