RESULTS OF THE 2016 JOINT FOREST SECTOR QUESTIONNAIRE
Data responses In total, 43 out of 72 ITTO member countries returned the 2016 questionnaire, either fully or partially completed: 28 consumer countries (75%); 9 JFSQs missing 15 producer countries (42%); 20 JFSQs missing. We have full information (production, trade, directions of trade, secondary trade, 2016 estimates, trade in tropical species, forest sector questionnaire) for only 10 countries

Delayed submissions impact data quality, particularly production data. Delayed submissions result in the UN trade statistics database (COMTRADE) becoming the primary source of information for trade data as no data is available or submitted via the JFSQ. Countries still have until June 2017 to submit the JFSQ so response rate likely to increase in 2016-2017.
Quality of Producer Responses All producer countries which submitted the JQ (15) provided information on production and trade. 14 were satisfactory for production data 12 were satisfactory for trade data 12 countries provided 2016 forecasting Only 9 countries gave us useful information on tropical trade species The number of producer JQs decreased but the overall quality was satisfactory.

In the event that no satisfactory explanation is forthcoming, the Council shall take such action as it deems appropriate.

Quality of Consumer Responses All the consumer countries that submitted the JFSQ (28) provided information on production and trade. 22 were satisfactory for production data 23 were satisfactory for trade data Only 6 countries provided forecasts for 2016 of which only 4 were satisfactory. Only 7 countries gave us useful information on tropical trade species.

Country Replies: Conversion Factors ITTO is collecting the conversion factors questionnaire from producer countries only and from Japan. FAO and UNECE will collect the questionnaires from consumers countries. We have received only 6 questionnaires over 36 (16%) so far: Guyana, Japan, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mexico and Suriname. Completing the questionnaire will allow us to cover the world with a unique survey on conversion factors.
