The Arthur Carman Papers 2017.22.1 Arthur Herbert Carman (1902-1982) was a Wellington and Tawa-based sports historian and statistician. In 1935, he published the New Zealand Rugby Almanack and in 1948, together with Noel Macdonald, he began the New Zealand Cricket Almanack published by his own company, Sporting Publications. He took on sole responsibility for the Almanack in 1958 and edited and compiled it until 1982. Building on the pioneering work of TW Reese, Carman established himself as a hugely important figure in the development of cricket statistics and history, both in New Zealand and internationally. His cricketing publications include WN Carson: Footballer and Cricketer, Sporting Publications: Wellington 1947, New Zealand International Cricket, 1894-1974, Sporting Publications: Tawa 1974, and Wellington Cricket Centenary, 1875-1975, Sporting Publications: Tawa 1975. The Collection held by the New Zealand Cricket Museum includes national and international correspondence to and from Carman, with regard to various cricket Almanacks and New Zealand cricket in general, as well as four boxes of scrapbooks etc covering domestic cricket and international cricket tours undertaken by New Zealand, together with details of tours to New Zealand by other countries. Folder 2 Correspondence re: 1967 Cricket Almanack as well as news clippings re: the injury to Archie Taylor. Folder 3 Correspondence re: 1974 Cricket Almanack in chronological order and undated. Also various

assorted news clippings and pages from earlier Almanacks featuring Carman s hand written corrections and notes. Folder 4 Correspondence re: 1976 Cricket Almanack in chronological order. Folder 5 National and International correspondence on New Zealand cricket history and statistics. Includes some correspondence with Irving Rosenwater. Folder 6 Correspondence with Francis Payne, 1980-81. Folder 7 Correspondence re: 1980 Cricket Almanack in chronological order and undated. Various assorted news clippings. Folder 8 Information provided by players for use in New Zealand Almanacks as well as letters from Carman to players soliciting information. There are also news clippings on certain players. Folder 9 Carman s notes on player s statistics etc. Also includes printed player details from previous Almanacks presumably for lay out purposes. Some have handwritten additions and corrections on them. Folder 10, Account Book: Sporting Publications Covers New Zealand Rugby Almanack 1935-1970 and New Zealand Cricket Almanack 1949-1970. Also includes various invoices, quotes etc to do with Sporting Publications primarily the New Zealand Cricket Almanack. B. Boxes Box 1 1.
