The flying locations as we know them today will not be the same in the near future. In the next year we as RC pilots could lose up to three flying sites. Some time this year the Flying site at Camp Withycombe will close. The wonderful flying site at the Evergreen Museum is reported to be removed in the next year or two. The Fly- A-Ways will lose their flying site this June. The Barn Stormers have a cap of 100 members and are currently not excepting new members. If all this happens the Dusters could see a significant number of new members. In the past the Dusters have welcomed all new members and would like to continue to do so. We also believe we have an obligation to our current members who have supported the club to provide them with the flying opportunities they are accustom to. To address this issue the Dusters membership has established the following new polices. The Dusters will provide membership for 125 Pilots. The 125 membership is not a hard number. That number can be increased on decreased based on what the club membership thinks the flying site can accommodate. To address the long dragged out annual membership renewal process the following changes were made. Beginning with the 2010 renewal cycle all Members renewing after March 1, will be assessed a $25.00 late fee. If you have not renewed your membership for 2009 and plan on flying at the Dusters field this year get your Dues paid fast. No one is exempt from the 125 membership cap and the club would not like to see you lose your position in the Dusters. Terry Criswell President Dusters RC Club The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Dusters News May 2009 Its been a short month, what with the meeting coming a week early to accommodate the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Lots of activity at the field, and the season is fully underway. A reminder that the summer meeting schedule starts May 18th at 7 PM at the field. Of course, the best part of all that is some flying time beforehand as well as a $2 dinner featuring the finest burgers and all the trimmings. Looking forward to seeing you there. Inside: jay Jim Robb with his latest, a 1/3 scale Clipped Wing Cub with a wingspan of 120 in and a weight of 31.5 lbs dry. It has a Harris smoke system and a DA-100 with standard mufflers for power. On the maiden flight it required only minor trim changes and proved to be a very docile, nice flying airplane. Wally Tift has a new love. Wally dived into the world of gassers with his new Reactor powered by a DL 50. A great flying plane that suits Wally s style fine. Meeting Notes Area Events Field Activities
The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Pg 2 Meeting Notes The April meeting of the Dusters RC club was called to order at 7 Pm on Monday, April 27 th with 15 members present. Guests present were Wayne Wagner and Scott Carrigan. A Dusters welcome to new members Dan Williams, Bob Pearson, Harvey Price, Dave Long, David Fox, Matt Reid and David Hicks. Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved. Treasurer s report was also read and approved. The safety officer offered a short review of Gary s propeller strike incident and pointed out that the choice of hospital in that situation turned into a logistics nightmare. It was again re emphasized that perhaps the best course of action, in an event such as this, is to call 911 and utilized the Canby paramedics, who will stabilize the situation with whatever is required and then you can drive yourself (self ambulatory) to anywhere you wish for further care. Field Marshall reported that the last of the fertiliz4r is on the field. Filed in great shape IMAC committee reported that the flyers are out, the sanctions are here. Dan also displayed several of the prizes/promotional items to be given away during the event. Old Business: It was decided that this year we will abstain from presenting our $150 donation to the local Scalemasters Qualifier and will, instead, donate a sponsor plaque to the Scalemasters National Event in Wenatchee, Washington this year. Further to this issue, Rick Dunn reported that area hotels in the Wenatchee area are filling up fast for this event. This takes place September 10-13th Fly A Ways field will be closed in June, Evergreen Field in McMinnville will be closed in approximately a year. This generated an extensive discussion on new members, membership levels as well renewing membership policies. In the end, a motion was made and passed to cap member ship levels at 125 for the 2009 flying year. An additional motion was made and passed that will levy a $25 surcharge to late renewals, beginning in 2010. This would apply to all dues not paid by March 1 st Dusters Thanks are extended to Earl Cox for his donation of more green resin chairs. Bill Bale for his flag donation Terry Criswell for the sun shades on the flightline. Prior to adjournment, members were reminded that the May meeting will take place on the field. Door Prize inners were Bill Bale and Bob Hoover. What s the difference. Lat Saturday, while preparing to mow my overgrown lawn, I carelessly broke the starting rope to my old trusty mower. No problem I thought, I will call my good old flying buddy Bruno over to get me going. Upon his arrival, I asked Bruno if he could help get me started. Sure he said. Whereupon I tilted the mower onto its side and said, OK, Flip away, I ve got it all primed to go Bruno looked at me in horror. You have to be nuts, he said,. That is an unpredictable gas engine with a 22 inch blade that can take your hand clean off. No way am I doing that, even for as good a friend as you That may be I replied, but you start your gas engined airplanes all the time this way, and they are unpredictable and swing 22 inch propellers that can take your hand clean of What s the difference??. The Official Newsletter of the Dusters RC Club Pg 3 Taxiing and Taking off Forward (No one goes straight anymore) How Many times, have we seen the RC Pilot taxi down to take off position, slam the throttle forward and then watch in amazement as the plane veers back and forth across the runway, each time more violently as the speed increases, until the plane either gets yanked off the ground by a half panicked pilot or winds up in a vicious ground loop. There are a couple of factors in play, in this situation, and we will take a moment to look at both. It is poor practice to firewall the throttle at the beginning of a take off run. The wise pilot slowly applies power and gets the airplane rolling, correcting for any wandering and once established in a straight line and accelerating, then advancing to full power. It is also good practice to perform a few hard throttle starts and determine which way the plane instinctively, wants to turn. In most cases, this will be left, but I have had a few that wanted to go right, mostly likely due to propeller slipstream corkscrewing down the fuselage and striking the right side of the vertical stab. Once you have a good idea which way your plane is going to veer, you can be ready for it and know which corrective rudder you will have to use. Toe In as seen from above the axle Positive camber as seen from the front of the axle While on the subject of ground handling, there are several factors that can be employed to assist in a straight running airplane. It is important to set up your wheels with positive camber and toe-in.this is true for tricycle or conventionally geared airplanes. There is no set rule I am aware of, so long as it is visible. Insofar as we are not real worried about wearing out tires, I have found that more is better than less when it comes to making these adjustments. You will be startled at the difference in ground handling these changes will make. Bryan Brinegar
