In March I had the opportunity to work at Women in Science, Sioux Empire Water Festival, and Ag Days at the Washington Pavilion. It was a wonderful chance to educate youth in a wide range of topics. As summer quickly approaches, please be aware of deadlines! Read through the newsletter to learn the different platforms we will be using to alert everyone of various deadlines and program opportunities. Enjoy the warmer weather! - Katherine Fruit Sales Schedule Fruit Sorting Thurs., April 6, Canton -8:30AM- Noon (approximately) at Sunshine Foods. Fruit delivery to customers, Saturday, April 8. Volunteers, including parents, that would like to help sort fruit on Thurs. April 6 (morning and early afternoon) contact the Extension Office to sign up. Clubs that volunteer to sort will be the first clubs loaded on Thursday. All fruit must be loaded and removed on April 6. No individual sorting is permitted at the Sunshine Foods parking lot. 2017 Fruit Sale Results The 2017 4-H fruit sales season is almost complete. Thank you 4-H members, parents, leaders and customers for your contribution. There were 1228 fruit boxes sold. Listed below are the top five 4-H member sellers and the 4-H members that had $400 or more in fruit sales. Each club keeps 1/2 the profits for 4-H Club related expenses and awards. The other 1/2 of the profit goes into the Lincoln County 4-H Leaders Account to help pay for 4-H related expenses and awards. The success of the Lincoln County 4-H program is a result of your dedication. Livestock $408 Dustin Hopf Blue Ribbon Seekers $400 4-H Insurance Information All 4-H members and Cloverbuds are required to have 4-H insurance. The 2017 4-H insurance forms are the website. Each 4-H member must have a completed form returned to the Club Leader. Club Leaders will turn in forms by Thursday, April 6 to the Office along with one check made payable to Lincoln County 4-H Leaders Association.

Keep in Touch! 2017 4-H Camp Poinsett 4-H Camp at Lake Poinsett for ages 8-12 years old (as of 1/1/2017) is June 5-7. Parents are responsible for all transportation. Youth arrive on Monday at 2PM and depart on Wednesday at 10AM. The fee is $150 for 4-H Members and non 4-H Members. There are camping scholarships opportunities to help offset costs for 4-H members. Lincoln County offers a $25 camp scholarship and so does the State 4-H Leaders Association, making your cost $100 per camper. New this year is registration online through igrow at http://igrow.org/events/4-h-camp-poinsett/ Registration deadline is April 30, 2017. Adults 21 years and older, if you would like to be a chaperone at Camp Poinsett contact the Extension office for details ASAP. Teen Leadership Camp (TLC) TLC 2017 is June 5-9 on the SDSU campus in Brookings. TLC is for ages 13-18, 4-H & non-4-h members. It is a fun-filled week learning skills and traits that will stretch your leadership and teamwork abilities by working with teens from across the state. Youth have the opportunity to make new friends and learn leadership skills to take back to your club and communities. Watch for registration and information on IGROW or contact the Extension office. Livestock Judging Camp This years Livestock Judging Camp Dates are set! Camp 1 will be June 4th-6th held at SDSU. Camp 2 will be June 8th-10th held at SDSU. Livestock Judging School Lincoln County 4-H Leaders are hosting a Livestock Judging School on Friday, July 7, at the 4-H grounds located two miles east of Canton. The judging school is open all 4-H members in all counties. Tentative times are 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Watch for details in future newsletters. Remind App The Lincoln County 4-H Office is trying to make sure all 4-H families are informed on upcoming activities and deadlines. Jackrabbit Dairy Camp 2017 The SDSU Dairy Club is hosting the 14th Annual Jackrabbit Dairy Camp at the SDSU campus in Brookings, June 8th June 10th. There will be workshops on showmanship, fitting, dairy cattle judging, advocating and more. Participants will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with a heifer throughout the camp. Youth 8-18 may register until May 15th deadline. Limited class size, first come first serve basis. This is a a great opportunity for youth to learn not only about cattle and production, but also about dairy product manufacturing and leadership. 4-H Robotics 101 Volunteers interested in learning more about the robotics program, this is for you. Christine Wood will be conducting LEGO MINDSTORMS robot programming and 4-H Platforms curriculum on Saturday, April 29th at the Sioux Falls Regional Center start time is 1PM. For more information go to this link: http://lincolncountysd.org/page.cfm/ Departments/1178/Youth-In-Action Red Star Yeast Awards RED STAR Yeast is offering a co-operative program for our Achievement Days that will enhance our already established baking projects. RED STAR Yeast would like to encourage people in the art of yeast baking. One of the favorite locations to celebrate individual creativity in this area is at the county and state fairs across the country. Red Star Yeast will provide a RED STAR (1) insulated tote bag, (1) instant read thermometer, and (1) tea towel to be given as awards. To be eligible to win the Red Star Yeast prizes, contestants must use Red Star Yeast and attach an empty packet or photo to their recipe entry. Visual Arts Dabbler Award Two awards are given annually at Recognition Event to one junior (ages 8-13) and one senior (ages 14-18). The awards are based on total points accumulated from Visual Arts exhibits at Achievement Days and State Fair. Points will be based on the following system: 4,3,2,1 for P,B,R,W at Achievement Days and 6,4,2 1 for P,B,R,W at the State Fair. Awards will be $15 gift cards from craft stores or companies. Shooting Sports Good luck to all shooting sports competitors and coaches that will be at the state 4-H shoot April 28-30. Did you ever consider how much your 4-H Leaders and 4-H Volunteers give? Thank your volunteers! True Leaders in Service 4-H is launching the annual True Leaders in Service initiative in honor of National Volunteer Appreciation Month. True Leaders in Service, a month-long community service activation, will officially kick-off the first day of April, and culminate with the National 4-H Day of Service on Saturday, April 29. The website is live and has many resources along with a tool for registration your service activities. http://4-h.org/true-leaders-in-service/ Lincoln County Extension is currently accepting applications for two Night Watch positions at the 4-H grounds to work from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. during July 31 August 2, 2017 only. Ensure security of grounds and animals as well as light maintenance and grounds work. Must be 18 years of age or older; have experience working with animals and livestock; and be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Approximate wage is $11.27/hour. Applications available by calling (605) 764-2756 or emailing lincoln@sdstate.edu Submit completed application to Lincoln County Extension Office, 104 N. Main St, Ste 30, Canton, SD 57013 by May 1, 2017. Rabbit Tattoos in Left Ear Rabbit tattoo ID s need to be placed in the left ear. The tattoo ID is needed for the rabbit ownership verification affidavit form (OVA) due by June 1. You will also need these ID s to enter your rabbit in 4-HOnline by June 1. Interview Judging 4-H members may bring his /her exhibit before a judge and discuss the project together on Tuesday, August 1, at 4-H Achievement Days. In visiting with the member, the judge can find out what difficulties they experienced, what they enjoyed most, their questions, suggestions or ideas to share. A beginner or junior division member may bring a mentor (parent, older sibling and/or leader) with them. The exhibit ribbon placing will be given at this time. Use the state fair book for exhibit information. The exhibits that will be interview judged this year are: Constructed Clothing: accessary, using fabric. Horticulture: peppers and potatoes. Food Preservation Display Exhibits: All Welding Science Display Exhibits: All Interview Judging will be held Tuesday, August 1, in the Quonset at 10:30 AM to noon.

Market Swine Self-Identification Step 1 (April, 2017 up to June 1, 2017) Exhibitors interested in showing a market hog at the 2017 South Dakota State Fair within the 4-H Division must have their market hog identified with a 4-H Green Tag and DNA Sample for eligibility. Contact the County 4-H Office to request a 4-H Green Tag and DNA Sample Envelope to identify the market hog. Step 2 (April, 2017 up to June 1, 2017) Upon receipt of State Fair materials, potential exhibitors have one week to complete the Market Swine Ownership Verification Affidavit Form, located on www.igrow.org, and return the form and DNA Sample Envelope to the exhibitor s County 4-H Office. Market Hogs must be identified in the exhibitor s name or in immediate family member names. If a market hog is identified in the immediate family name only one form and DNA envelope for that animal needs to be submitted, however, all siblings names MUST appear on the form and DNA envelope. There is no limit to the number of market hogs which may be identified by an exhibitor; however, exhibitors are limited to entering and bringing no more than 2 market hogs per division to the Fair. Divisions include: Purebred Market Barrow, Purebred Market Gilt, Commercial Market Barrow, & Commercial Market Gilt. All unused or ruined DNA Sample Envelopes and 4-H Green Tags must be returned to the County 4-H Office at the time of submitting the Market Swine Ownership Verification Affidavit Form. If any 4-H Green tag is unaccounted for at the time of submission, all animals identified by the exhibitor will be ineligible to compete at State Fair. Documentation of ownership and samples submitted after the one week deadline will be ineligible to be accepted by the County 4-H Office. NO Ownership Verification Affidavits or DNA samples will be accepted after June 1st. The 4-H Green Tag is to be placed in the ear of the hog being identified and a DNA hair sample collected; see instruction sheet located on www.igrow.org. Proper payment to the County 4-H Office for DNA Sample Envelopes is due at the time of submitting the samples. The cost for each animal to be State Fair identified is $6. Step 3 (July, 2017 up to August 1, 2017) Do not forget to enter for the Fair! Green Tagging and submitting DNA samples is NOT an entry in the Fair. Swine Youth YPQA Training Youth Pork Quality Assurance will be used for 2017. All 4-H members that exhibit swine must be youth pork quality assurance certified by JUNE 1, 2017. Training session for our county will be held on Tuesday, May 30, at 5:30 PM in the courthouse multi -purpose room. RSVP by noon on May 30. Any 4-H member may attend the training session. Youth may get Youth PQA training online instead of attending a training session if they prefer. Deadline is June 1. Please send the Extension Office a copy of your YPQA certificate. We will upload them in 4HOnline for you. You may attend other county training sessions if you prefer. Alcester 4-H grounds May 22, 5PM. Freeman Community Center, May 30, 7PM. Youth PQA Training Online All 4-H swine project members must be Youth Pork Quality Assurance (PQA Plus) certified annually in order to show hogs at either Achievement Days or State Fair. Training for Youth PQA Plus is available online at: http://www.pork.org/youth-pqa-plus/ Delivered in the form of an engaging, interactive online module, the online option allows participants to learn, test, and become certified in Youth PQA Plus. Age groups are determined by the youth s age on Jan. 1, 2017. Beginner 8-11 Intermediate 12-14 Advanced 15-19. Beginners who participate in the online module will receive a one year certification. Intermediate and advanced youth, depending on their age at the time of completing the course and if they pass the exam, could receive a three year certification, or certification lasting until they age out of their division if it s less than three years, and move into the next age division. If an intermediate or senior youth member does not pass their exam online, they will receive a one year certification. Deadline is JUNE 1, 2017.

Breed Registration Papers A copy of breed registration paper for registered or purebred animals must be turned into the Lincoln County Extension Office by July 14. The Extension Office will then scan them and download then into the 4-H Member records on 4-hOnline. For State Fair and AKSARBEN, registration papers must show one of the following: The member s name as owner, or The name of the exhibitor and/or co-owner who is a member or the exhibitor's immediate family (parent or siblings-members of household), or The family farm or ranch name or parent s name. (Unless specified differently by specific junior breed association rules for South Dakota) If leasing-exhibitors must submit a copy of the Lease Form to the Extension Office by April 1 for market beef, June 1 for other livestock except swine. If leased animals are exhibiting as registered animals, they must submit copies of registration papers to the Extension Office by July 14. Registered animals owned by someone outside immediate family must be registered to the owner listed on the 4-H Livestock Lease Agreement Form. Horse Project Training April 17 Horse Project Achievement Program Training for youth exhibiting in horse show will be held in Canton on April 17 from 5:00-7:30 PM. Dress appropriately for working around horses. RSVP the office by Friday, April 14. This is the only training in our county. Weigh-in Sheep & Goats be prepared Families that weigh their market sheep and goats need to arrive prepared. Bring the necessary help to move your animals to and from the scale, along with a halter-rope. You are responsible for handling your animals. Have them clean for biosecurity reasons and for samples pulled for DNA testing. All market sheep and meat goats need to have the official scrapie tag prior to weigh-in. Bring your verification forms, complete them as much as possible ahead of time and you can finish them after the weight is given to you. Turn the completed forms into the Extension Staff. Be sure they are signed by both the youth and guardian. Families can put all market sheep together on one form, be sure all the youth sign the form. You may do the same for market goat. If you plan to exhibit your market sheep/goat at 4-H events at state fair, they must be DNA sampled at weigh-in. The cost is $6 per animal and needs to be paid at weigh-in. Sheep/Goat Weigh-In Sheep/Goat-May 24, 5:30 pm-8:00 pm Canton 4-H Grounds located two miles east of Canton. Rodeo Member Deadlines All 4-H Members that are participating in rodeo must complete mandatory forms and mail them to the State Rodeo Secretary by May 1, 2017. The rodeo insurance form and payment is due to the Extension office by April 6. Rodeo info may be found at http://igrow.org/4h/south-dakota-4h/state-finals-rodeo/ Horse Show Clinic Trophy Trotters Club is hosting a Horse Show Clinic for Lincoln County horse project members. The clinic is Wednesday, June 7th at the arena on the Lincoln County 4-H grounds, beginning at 6:00 pm. All horse project members are encouraged to attend, as well as any members who want to find out more about the horse project. Poultry Day Camp 2017 The South Dakota 4-H Poultry Day Camp is in Mitchell on Saturday, April 22nd. 4-H members are invited. Go to http://igrow.org/events/4-h-poultry-day-camp/ to complete your registration by April 4th deadline. Included will be showmanship, nutrition, bird selection, and biosecurity through interactive presentations. A t-shirt, SWAG bag and lunch are included. Poultry Leg bands Poultry ownership verification affidavit forms (OVA) require leg band ID s to be listed on the form by June 1. You will also need these ID s to enter your poultry in 4-HOnline by June 1. Contact the Extension Office to get your leg bands in plenty of time before the June 1 deadlines.

4-H Families required to enter all Animals (except market) on 4HOnline by June 1. All 4-H families will need to add their animals (not market) into 4-HOnline by June 1. You will still need to turn in your completed ownership verification affidavits (OVA) to the Extension Office by June 1. The office staff will sign and scan these documents and add them into 4HOnline. Getting access to 4HOnline for Families 4-HOnline no longer supports Internet Explorer due to security reasons. Use Mozilla FireFox or Google Chrome. 1. Go to sd.4honline.com. There is no www before it. 2. Scroll down to enter your email address. This must be the email address you provided when enrolled unless you contacted the us to change it. 3. Select I have a profile 4. Enter your password. (If you forgot your password follow step 7) 5. Select Family. 6. Click Log in. 7. Enter your email address Click I forgot my password Select Family. Click Send my Password. Do not close this window. Check your e-mail account for your temporary password, and it should show up in a very short period of time. This may show up in your junk e-mail. Copy your password. When you received your password, return to log in page and select I have a profile. DO NOT CREATE A NEW PROFILE! Paste your temporary password from the e-mail message into the log in page. Click Login. Once you log in, you will be prompted to create a new password. It must contain at least one number or symbol. 1. How to enter animals (except market) on 4HOnline 2. Log into your account at 4HOnline. 3. Go to the member page 4. Click on edit for the member you re entering information 5. Click on the Animals/Livestock tab at the top of the screen 6. Select the Animal type you are adding 7. Click Add Animal 8. Enter the Animal Information that is requested or re-activate the animal if it was entered in 4HOnline last year. 9. Horse members-you may upload your horse pictures directly onto this page. Save your photos to your computer and download them. 10. If a family has more than one 4-H member, and not sure who is showing the animal yet, choose a member to list in under and only enter it one time in the system. All family members will have the access if needed. 1. All verification affidavit forms, Horse ID forms, horse project Achievement Forms, Dog Id and Vaccine Verification, lease forms must be completed and turned into the Extension Office, whom will download them in 4HOnline. Deadline is June 1. 2. Registration papers for purebred animals can be downloaded in the provided space or bring a copy to the Extension Office by July 14. 3. 4HOnline will be locked out June 1st. No additional animals will be entered after June 1st. 4. If you have troubles, contact the Extension Office and we will guide you through it. Horse and Livestock 4Honline Reactivation Families that plan to exhibit a horse, dairy cattle, breeding sheep, dairy goat, breeding meat goat or rabbit that entered them in last year, you can go in and re-activate that animal any time before June 1. Go into your family account, animals and there should be a list of animals verified last year. Click on the box for those you want to Reactivate and then click the re-activate box on the bottom. YOU WILL STILL NEED TO COMPLETE OWNERSHIP AFFIDAVIT VERIFICATION FORMS.
