Camps & Participation Events - Providing children a fun & safe environment to participate in Gaelic Games Month: May Wexford GAA Camps & Participation Summer Camps 2016 Kellogg s Cúl Camps were recently launched in Croke Park for the 2017 GAA summer camps. Wexford GAA have had a great start to online bookings with a huge rise in early bookings, close to 1,500 children have already booked in for a summer of fun. Building on the success of our Easter camps and the growth in Cúl Camps over the past couple of years we hope to see close to 6,000 children involved in GAA camps this summer. This is a big achievement for GAA participation as we have grown from 2,800 participants in 2014. Any booking that is made before May 31 st will receive their gear in the month of June. Places can be booked online for this summer at https://www.kelloggsculcamps.gaa.ie camps start on July 3 rd summer with the last week running August 14 th 18 th. and will run over the Go Games Sunday May 14th will saw the first of the new U8 Regional Blitz days take place. Four blitz venues around Wexford will host over seven hundred U8 children playing hurling. Six of these style blitz days are scheduled for the coming months giving children the opportunity to play in three hurling and three football events provided by Wexford GAA. In between these blitz days, clubs are encouraged to arrange other games to further develop the skills of the game.
This new format is part of a restructuring of fixtures for U8 U11 s in Wexford GAA that links with our Shed Blitz and our Play & Stay Days. Participation and skill development are at the corner stones of this new structure and are fundamental to these new plans. We see games opportunities as the key to ensuring these fundamentals are met. All games will be played under the Go Games ethos which are outlined below. Under this Go Games format; Every child gets a go. Activities are structured in a manner which optimises the level of fun, friendship, fair play and achievement derived by participants. Participants play in a safe, supportive and stimulating environment where they are encouraged to risk error, to learn and to derive maximum enjoyment from their involvement. Players master the basic skills of Hurling and Gaelic Football and experience the sense of accomplishment, which derives from acquiring playing proficiency on the left and right hand side of the body. Everybody involved in Go Games, whether as players, parents/guardians, spectators, mentors, teachers, officials etc., are exposed to the key underpinning principles and give expression to the GAA Give Respect, Get Respect initiative. Academy Squads Model Academy - Nurturing Progression, Striving for Excellence Model Óg: Our Under 13 hurling have are taking part in a blitz in July and our footballers have a session this weekend Sunday 28th. The footballers in Halo Tiles Centre Of Excellence. Our footballers will also have a blitz next month. Times, venues etc will be confirm to all parents of our hurling and footballers blitz in the next week. To date we have had great numbers attending our Model Óg training with over 100 players turning out for both hurling and football. A big thank you to all players and parents for all the time and efforts so far this year. Model Academy: This weekend our U15, U16 and U17 football squad are playing three third challenge game of the year. Our under 15 play Offaly on Sunday in Portlaoise at 11am. The team are then going to O Moore Park to support out senior hurlers who play Laois at 2pm. Our under 16 footballer play Meath in Bray, Co Wicklow at 1pm. Our U16 arepreparing for their Carlow Cup which takes place in July. Our U17 footballers are playing Laois in Bunclody in a challenge game in preparation for their Championship game in June. Our U17 hurlers lost to Dublin by 8 points in the U17 Lenister semi final last Saturday in Parnell Park. Out Under 14 hurling beat Waterford last Friday evening. Players and management are happy with how training is going very well to date. Our U16 hurlers are playing Waterford this Friday night. Best of luck to all teams, players and management teams in this weekends games. 2017 Féile Update - Wexford Coaches getting ready for Féile Buffers Alley was the scene for the GAA Féile workshop with National Hurling Development Manager Martin Fogarty & Mary O Connor (Director of Technical Development & Participation). Over eighty coaches were in attendance from clubs right throughout the county. In a unique twist both Camogie & Hurling coaches came together to run a joint workshop aimed at covering the key areas in preparing a U14 team. Games Development Manager Eoin Morrissey was delighted with the outcome of the evening Turnout was very good and everyone who attended got something out of the
Wexford Coaching & Games Development Monthly Report evening. Both codes are the very same and the skills are all transferable. Most coaches in Wexford will jump from camogie to hurling or visa versa. The help of the Joe Roche (Camogie Development Officer Wexford) & Bobby Goff (Wexford Coaching Officer) in bringing the idea of joint coaching workshops was a real help. It is something we are going to work on over the coming months Martin as part of his roles highlight the importance of Féile. Coaches are so important to the running of Féile Sometimes we overlook the importance of coaches in the lead up. Ensuring coaches have a developmental mind-set and ensure players are getting games based activities is so important. The challenge for the GAA is to keep children playing all the way to adulthood. If the coaching is good it will go a long way. Mary O Connor who worked on defence play on the evening emphasised the role of the fundamental skills. We often as coaches try activities that are not age appropriate. I remember as a player practicing hooking & blocking at every Cork training session. This sometimes is forgotten. Over eighty schools welcomed a GAA party to their schools over the last two weeks with representatives from Wexford County Board, Leinster GAA and Croke Park. We would like to thank all schools who facilitated the visits. St. Joseph's National School in Bree pulled out all the stops today for the President of the GAA which was his 3rd school visit today, Aogán Ó Fearghaíl. Model Academies cement future for Wexford GAA with historic deal. Wexford GAA are proud to announce the partnership of Anthony Neville Homes with our Model Academy program catering for players from U13 up to, and including, U17 in both hurling and football. This is the platform for both player and coach development with over 500 players and 80 coaches involved in the process. The delivery of the academy program is tasks to the games development team and specifically Peter Hally & Shane O Hanlon. Speaking at the role of academies along the player pathway Games Manager Eoin Morrissey states Academies have become an integral part of the pathway to elite performance for GAA players. Academies have nurtured and developed young talent throughout the recent past. However, like all great ideas, the concept of academy squads has developed and changed throughout its existence. These academies have changed from being driven mainly by competition to their current existence of being driven by player development. We must remember that it is not the only pathway and many players will develop at later stages we must always stay conscious of that Open Coaching & Games Development Sessions Wexford GAA provided an open hurling coaching session this Sunday 14th May at 12.30pm in Ferns Centre of Excellence for all players at U14,U15 & U16 level. This is not open to players that are currently on academy squads in both hurling and football. This will also take place for football on the 28th of May at 12.30pm. The sessions will be led by games development personnel along with guest coaches. We would especially encourage players that attended trials and did not make the academy squads to take part. Speaking at the development of this program Games Development Manager Eoin Morrissey said Its important that we ensure all players have a pathway. This gives us a opportunity to provide players with feedback to help encourage their development.
Wexford Coaching & Games Development Monthly Report Glynn Barntown Michael Laffan Tournament 2017 All that is good about Gaelic Games was on show last weekend (13th May) in Glynn Barntown GAA grounds were clubs throughout the county / province and country ascended to the Michael Laffan Memorial Tournament. Played under the GAA Go Games ethos its gives children a opportunity to play in a developmental and meaningful game. Speaking after the event Meabh Cooney PRO said It was another wonderful success with busloads of hurling teams (twenty teams in total!) descending on Killurin from various parts of Kilkenny, Dublin, Kildare and Wexford in u10, u11 and u12 grades. The event began at 10am sharp and with impressive hurling on display on all three pitches, it ran like clockwork to its conclusion in the early afternoon, with the weather remaining kind despite the forecast. Glynn Barntown GAA Club would like to thank Conor Kavanagh and his team for their excellent preparation for, and co ordination of the day and to all of the wonderful volunteers in our club who continue to turn out in great numbers to make club days like this run seamlessly. The tournament was tinged with great sadness at the news of the passing of Garry Laffan Snr Monamore, Crossabeg- former Glynn Barntown clubman and brother to Michael Senior. Garry passed in the early hours of the morning after a short illness but the tournament proceeded as planned at the wishes of the families. Coach Education - Educating the next generation of club coaches Wexford GAA Youth Resistance Training Course Overview: This course is designed to provide GAA coaches working at the youth level (13-18 years of age) with the necessary knowledge, understanding and competencies in the area of resistance training to implement a programme focused on improving functional strength and movement efficiency at schools, club and development squad level. Aim: The course aims to make clubs, schools and development squads selfsufficient so that the coaches from within the varying organizations and squads are competent at delivering a RT programme without the need for external bodies which is currently present within the game This course consists of the following modules The needs and demands of the youth athlete The role of RT in preparation of the Gaelic Games youth athlete Principles of training Warm-Up games and exercises Upper & Lower extremity exercises Core Exercises Movement analysis of RT patterns Application of movement analysis Periodisation and planning Progression and adaptation of exercises Application of progression and adaptation of exercises Coaching field based RT exercises Programme design Assessment: - On course continuous Assessment - Practical exam demonstrating the ability to organize a session to develop resistance training programme for a team - Reflective learning diary based on experiences during the course. Primary & Secondary Schools Creating opportunities for learning and coaching GAA for all Wexford students Wexford GAA hosted a first year football blitz in Pairc Charman on Wednesday 13 th with 8 schools taking part and over 150 kids took part. Good Counsel College New Ross were the overall winners. Well done to all that took part. Wexford Coaching and Games completed the last of our TY coaching and leadership courses in Kennedy College, Presentation and St Peters College in May. Over 400 pupils completed our Coaching and Leadership programme. Wexford C&G continued our first year programmes for GAA players that started in 2106. Either a Strength and Conditioning/Functional movement programme or Skill development programme has run in 6 schools and will develop the functional movement and skills of over 200 GAA players. The first Year coaching has started to target those first years not making the schools Juvenile team. This initiative is running in Good Counsel, Wexford CBS, Enniscorthy CBS, FCJ Bunclody, Gorey CS and St Peters. Coaching support for school teams is ongoing in both hurling and football in a number of schools, and with the addition of all the aforementioned programmes Wexford Coaching and Games has a strong presence in 15 Secondary schools across the county. Wexford Schools were very successful in competitions in May with Enniscorthy CBS, Ramsgrange CS and New Ross CBS all winner Leinster Championships at various levels. Urban Development Updates Aoife Murphy In the last month, I have continued working with Rapparees/Starlight s and Geraldine O Hanrahan s. Since 6th May, I ve set up a parent coaching morning in Rapparees/Starlight s. These sessions contain the introduction of basic skills of football and hurling along with fun games. This workshop will run for six weeks. Every Tuesday morning, I assist with Hurling 365 and after school coaching in St Aidans National School Enniscorthy. We have twenty-six children taking part in Hurling 365 and twenty-one pupils in the after-school coaching. I attended the Féile Coaching Workshop with Martin Fogarty and Mary O Connor and I helped with the Féile School Visits. I also helped coaching with the TY students in Kennedy College, New Ross. As part of the club cluster support, I assisted with GAA 15 workshop in Clongeen. I also carried out several coaching sessions with primary schools in Enniscorthy and New Ross. In the last month, I have been involved with coaching county teams with both u13 hurling and football. I have also been involved in coaching the u14 footballers. In the last few weeks I have also been involved in coaching in primary schools and secondary schools. I have been organising a resistance training course which will be held over three weekends in June and July. The resistance training course is a great opportunity for coaches to upskill in the area of resistance training and exercises for youths. I attended a blitz day for primary school children in ferns centre of excellence where the President of the GAA attended. I am involved in the moving well - being well project that is being carried out in primary schools. I will also be involved in games based coaching over the next few days that is part of the club cluster support program. I have also been involved in club callouts with the aim to upskill coaches. Community Coaching Update The course is based in Innovate Wexford park and we are just entering the 10th week. The course covers GAA, Soccer, Rugby, Cricket and various other workshops including Strength and Conditioning and Nutrition in Sport. Initially the course was geared towards developing the participants on a coaching level and give them a starter level coaching accreditation. The course along with providing the coaching tools has organically grown into developing confidence and personal interaction skills and the difference in the group over the last 10 weeks is incredible. 3 of the participants on the course are from Wexford Rehab Care and along with one other member are all past pupils of Our Lady Of Fatima Special School. With the help of Fran and Sports Active and Eoin from Wexford GAA, I have developed a link with the school and am now for the next number of weeks delivering non sport specific workshops in the school. This is in preparation for June 21st when I will be hosting a fun Sports for all day for the school in Innovate Wexford Park. On the day all 4 past pupils will be coaching and are extremely proud to be giving something back to the school. I see it as a great opportunity for the current pupils to participate in sport and gain something to aspire too. On the day we will be running the fun and run inclusive game in conjunction with Leinster GAA. The first number of weeks covered the theory side of the course and then we felt the group would benefit more from the practical hands on side of coaching. To date we have assisted on FAI primary school s soccer blitz with Will Doyle. Wexford GAA Easter Camp in Innovate Wexford Park. Shelmaliers GAA club Easter Camp. Clonard GAA club Easter Camp. Ferns Centre of Excellence Feile Blitz (the group met and had photos with the president of the GAA) Secondary Schools Football Blitz in Pairc Garman. I delivered skills based workshops for 3rd year Selskar College for a leadership course. The group initially took part in the workshops and towards the end presented with me providing demonstrations and overseeing activities. Upcoming events include running a fun sports day for Barntown NS,
delivering the sport for all day in Innovate Wexford Park. We have also had a taste of Nordic Hill Walking at Ravens wood Curracloe, the group introduced and ran a competition in Bocce Bowls and on the whole since the course began have become much more outgoing and grown massively in confidence. Attendance is exemplary and as any of the tutors involved will concur they are very interactive and the debate in the classroom is always lively. So with 4 weeks to go I am delighted with how things are progressing and think the highlight of the course will be the fun day for Our Lady Of Fatima School. Wexford Coaching & Games Development
