New Bridge s Design

Projected Schedule Spring 2017 Advertisement for contractor bids on project Summer 2017 Award of contract Fall 2017 Construction begins Winter 2018/19 Construction complete Summer 2019 Landscape restoration

Permitted work times Most work in the roadway will take place during weekdays between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM Work outside of the roadway can begin at 7:00 AM on weekdays If needed, work may take place on weekends or overnight (but only with special permission) to address significant tasks that must be expedited. There will be two periods of total roadway closures; each is anticipated to be five days or less in duration. County will work with contractor to expedite. Vehicle and pedestrian access to/from adjacent properties will be maintained at all times

Phases of Bridge Replacement Phase 1 The center median and existing southern span (currently northbound lanes) are removed. A temporary edge barrier is installed. Approximate duration is one month. Phase 2 All vehicle & pedestrian traffic is shifted to northern span (currently southbound lanes). There will be one travel lane per direction plus the existing sidewalk. New southern span is built. Approximate duration is 6 months. Phase 3- After new southern span is built, all traffic is shifted to it. Again one travel lane per direction plus a temporary walkway. Existing northern span is removed. New northern span is built. Approximate duration is 6 months. Phase 4 After the northern span is built the two halves are joined. All four vehicular traffic lanes are restored. Temporary sidewalks and barriers are replaced by permanent sidewalks and railings. Approximate duration is 2 months.

Phase 1 Work & Maintenance of Traffic Set up work site Removal of roadway median; existing bridge is split into two parallel bridge spans. A temporary barrier is installed between the spans. Southern span (northbound lanes) is removed. During median removal, traffic is reduced to one lane per direction When south span is removed, all traffic on Carlin Springs and George Mason must be rerouted via detours (up to five days duration)

Detours - Used for up to 5 days during Phases 1 and 3

Phase 2 Work & Maintenance of Traffic Construction of new south side bridge section All traffic (vehicles and pedestrians) is shifted to the north span

Phase 3 Work & Maintenance of Traffic Removal of existing north side span Construction of new north side bridge span Construction of new sewer line in Carlin Springs Rd and Abingdon Street. All traffic (vehicles and pedestrians) is shifted onto the new south side span. When north span is removed, all traffic on Carlin Springs & George Mason Drive must be rerouted via detours (up to five days duration) Abington Street within sewer line construction zone is reduced to one lane (Northbound only)

Sewer Line Construction

Phase 4 Work & Maintenance of Traffic Refurbishment of bridge abutments and wing walls Completion of permanent sidewalks on new bridge Vehicular traffic on Carlin Springs Road will be returned to two lanes per direction across bridge Pedestrian traffic will be restored as permanent sidewalks are completed

Completion Removal of construction trailer, temporary signage and building materials Restoration of site and planting of new landscaping No impacts on traffic movement (vehicles or pedestrians)

Expected Construction Concerns Noise & dust from demolition and construction Cut-through traffic as a result of short-term lane closures and traffic detours Potential traffic congestion from lane reductions & detours during construction Some access restriction on N. Abingdon Street Pedestrian crossings of N. Carlin Springs Road at N. Wakefield and N. Edison streets Rerouting or disruptions to Metrobus Route 25 service

Landscaping Tree Removal & Replacement
