Edition 5, 17 August 2017 News Update Marist Football Club AGM Wednesday 13th Venue: Marist Clubrooms, Newman College Sports Complex Date: Wednesday 13th Time: 6.30pm The Club needs to fill the following positions for season 2018: - Merchandise Sales Manager - Marketing and Communications Coordinator - Social Media Coordinator - Social Secretary - Sponsorship assistants Nominations can be made directly to John/Jack Penniment at john@rudirooster.com.au Awards Nights. Marist Juniors Venue: Marist Clubrooms Date: Friday 1st Time: 6pm Marist Seniors Venue: Marist Clubrooms Date: Friday 22rd Time: 6.30pm Marist Year 7s mix it with the best in Melbourne Educational, rewarding and a whole lot of fun. That s how many of the Marist Year 7s and their parents described their trip to Melbourne earlier this month. Twenty seven boys and 27 parents and guardians made the most of their four day visit to football heaven, which presented some amazing opportunities for the players, as they prepare to enter the next age group in junior football. The trip kicked off with a visit to the Essendon Football Club, where they were addressed by Coach John Worsfold (see below) and then given a tour of the facilities which included the bathrooms for ice baths, hot baths and cool baths for player recovery, and the briefing room where they learned how the players and coaches work together. The following day the travelling party went to the MCG to watch Carlton and Essendon, where they cheered on former Marist player, Travis Colyer, who s now a gun Essendon Midfielder. The boys also managed to experience a game at Etihad Stadium where they watched West Coast and St Kilda. Unfortunately, it wasn t the result the group, and a large percentage of WA, had hoped for but it was still an exciting experience, with the boys watching Nick Reiwoldt for the last time. Another highlight for the group was putting their skills to the test in a game against the Cheltenham Panthers U12 team.despite it being cold and windy, it was an exciting game with Marist putting in a solid performance to win by 20 points. The trip ended on a high with a tour of the MCG, which not only covered the ground s history, it also allowed the boys to sit in the dugouts like the football pros, and sit in the seats of the Australian Cricket Team. A big thank you must go to the Yr 7 Fundraising Committee for their efforts, with a special mention to Simon Chesson, the Tour Organiser, for all of his time and commitment in co-ordinating this successful trip.

Marist Juniors continue to impress on and off the ground From the Juniors perspective it is business as usual with all coaches and managers reporting at this time of the year they are seeing really strong development of the players skills and their teamwork. Juniors Coordinator Matt Mazzuchelli was told by an opposing coach that Your boys play with great spirit and are really respectful of their opponents. This sentiment could be extended to all of our junior teams, who have conducted themselves exceptionally well during the season. Coming into the last month of the season for all juniors it is very pleasing to see all volunteers pitching in and helping out with all game day roles from goal umpiring to canteen duty. A big thank you goes to all our current sponsors and those getting on board for next year. If you are interested in any sort of sponsorship please contact Phil Kavenagh - 0417 173 546. And don t forget the Juniors Awards night is coming up - details are on the front of the newsletter. Coaches get more AFL guidance Special guests continue to visit the Coaches and players of Marist. As mentioned (right) this time it was Nikki Harwood coaching the girls teams for an evening. Nikki is a life member of the WAWFL and was an assistant coach for the Collingwood team in the inaugural Women s AFL league. Nikki was fantastic in passing on her specific knowledge for young girls in football. Our Girls Teams celebrate a successful season The Marist Junior and Youth Girls Teams season is all but over with the final round being played on Friday 18 th August at 4.30pm (Junior) and 6.00pm (Youth) at Wembley Sports Park. If you haven t experienced a round of girls footy please feel free to come down and support the Marist Girls in their last hit out for 2017. It has been a fantastic year of girls footy at Marist, the big news is the Marist Youth Girls Team (ages 13 15) made it all the way to the finals in their very first season! A great outcome for the girls lead by Head Coach Scott Prentice. After finishing second on the ladder the Marist Youth Girls played in a semi-final, they were beaten on the day however gave a characteristic Marist Girls spirited performance. In other girls footy news, the girls teams were treated to a visit from a special guest coach at training on Monday 24 th July. Nikki Harwood (pictured below, far right) has been involved in coaching the Women s Western Bulldogs and was also the Midfield Coach at Collingwood s inaugural AFLW side in 2016. Nikki took the girls through their paces with some custom coaching drills designed to enhance the player s skills and knowledge of game play. This was a great boost to both girl s teams and the club is extremely thankful to Nikki for taking the time to spend with our girls. It has been another successful season of girls footy for Marist; anyone interested in being part of the fun in 2018 please feel free to email Dale at dales@advocateprivate.com.au It is coming up to season review time for all Marist coaches. It will be the final get together for coaches in 2017 to discuss how the season went and what improvements Marist can make for coaches and players for next year.

Wright Real Estate/ Bob Taylor Volunteer of the Month June Josh Murphy Marist Auskickers at City Beach Gala Day Auskick winds up for 2017 As we wind up for another amazing Auskick season, we reflect on the fantastic experience we provide for our Auskickers at Marist Football Club. This is only possible because of the many volunteers who give up their time to put together training drills each week, and who take a lot of care in helping kids who need special help with either confidence or skills. Many of the parents who help out at Auskick have never done this type of thing before, and it is a credit to all of them! The City Beach Gala Day earlier this month was an incredible opportunity for all the Auskickers to show off the skills they have acquired through the season. They played three games of footy over the morning against other teams in the district and the excitement this created showed on the kids faces. The final wind up on the 20th August is all about fun and will be a celebration of the season. Each team does their best to dress up in their team colours including the parents and volunteers. At the end of the match trophy s supplied by the club are distributed along with the team photos. These are great momentos for the kids of their Marist Auskick experience. Josh Murphy has been a volunteer coach since his son started PP Auskick 4 years ago, he now coaches his second eldest son in year 2. This year Josh also volunteered on the committee and has been a great assistant to the Auskick Coordinator, David Bornmann when he has been playing away with his Year 3 team. We hope the season was good for all players and parents and hope to have you all back again for another great year in 2018! Josh is there early every Auskick morning to assist the BBQ team set up the marquee, organise the training equipment, help parents and officials with any weekly events and queries, and to welcome new players and make sure they have what they need to be part of the club. In addition Josh has also been the Auskick Treasurer ensuring the BBQ team has the funds to provide the hotdogs and refreshments. He s also been in charge of coordinating the coffee vans and boost juice van for the parents each week. Congratulations Josh. Auskick Sponsorship Opportunity Our Auskick jumpers which are being replaced next year. This is awesome value for $500 you get a minimum of 3 years sponsorship of a jumper, offer runs out at the end of, link to our website info about this http:// www.maristfc.com.au/sponsors/sponsorship-packages/

Our sensational sponsors Marist Football Club is very grateful for the support of our sponsors. We d like to introduce you to some of them. You ve probably seen their faces and logos around the club. ABC Containers Geoff Campbell has been a long time sponsor of our footy club. He started as a Team sponsor in 2010, progressed to a major sponsor two years later and is still currently a major sponsor. His contributions have helped deliver the oval lighting and electronic scoreboard. Two years ago the club provided 1000 training shirts to its players and ABC Containers paid a significant amount towards the purchase of these shirts. This year his son Luca plays for the Year 9s and Geoff s wife Bec, along with the Menages paid for and organized their teams kit bags. They look great and the boys love them. Please support Geoff s business ABC Containers - www.abccontainers.com.au. Wright Real Estate/ Bob Taylor Volunteer of the Month July Amy Woods If you look at the photo he even looks like he s working!! Jeff Wright (left) presents Amy Woods with her award Amy is the coach of the Marist Junior Girls team after being Assistant Coach in 2016, the teams very first year. Amy has been instrumental in developing the skills of the junior girls through innovative training drills and having the girls focus on three distinct growth areas in each game. Amy works for the West Coast Eagles and has taken the girls to work with her for a tour of Domain Stadium. Amy is a great role model for the junior girls, not only for having played in the ruck for Claremont s WAWFL team, also for the fantastic relationship and rapport she has with the girls. The girls all truly look up to Amy. Brumbys - Scarborough Steve Liaros is a life member of the Marist Footy Club and has been sponsoring Marist since 2012 as a Team and Club sponsor. He has performed all sorts of roles while on and off the committee: Property manager, sponsorship, team managing, merchandise, coaching, flag waving, providing countless fresh buns for cost and even enjoying a beer. His sons Nick and Luke both played for Marist and are now playing at Wembley Amateur Footy Club. Please support his bakery at 3/181 Scarborough Beach Road.

Bexleys Real Estate Ian Fatharly has been a keen Team and Club sponsor since 2010. His son, Alistair, loves his footy and currently plays in the Year 11 team. Ian has always appreciated the effort that the coaches, managers and committee puts into the club and this is his way of giving back to Marist. He is very experienced in his profession of Real Estate, so if you need some help selling or buying your home, please give Ian a call at the Bexleys Office 9383 7777. Finals fever for Marist Youth Well with only two rounds remaining there is no truer saying than, time flies when you are having fun! It is hard to believe it has gone so fast. The season is far from over for some teams though, with at least three of the Marist Youth teams heading for the finals. The Year 8, 9 and 10 teams have all secured a berth in the finals, and we wish them luck as they gear up for an exciting end to the season. A significant number of players from each Youth team have also been selected to train with the Claremont Development Squad, which demonstrates the depth of talent at the club. This year we ve had many milestones with players reaching 50 and 100 games for our club. Four players who reached the 150 milestone are - James Parnell, Brady King, Jared Hoy and Jack Penniment. Congratulations to everyone. David Creed, Vice President and Youth Coordinator would like to thank all of the youth coaches and managers who have again undoubtedly managed to influence the young men and women participating in our great game. Krispy Kreme Doughnuts A big thank you also goes to the parents for their help with all the jobs required to make the game happen every week. Krispy Kreme has come on board as a first year sponsor. They support many community clubs throughout Australia, so we are lucky they have included us in there endeavours. They have donated best player awards and a plentiful supply of fresh doughnuts. One hundred percent of the sales of these doughnuts, goes straight into Marist Funds to pay for jumpers, ground markings etc. The latest sale of 60 dozen doughnuts will go towards the Maddie Riewoldt s Vision, an initiative supported by the Marist Girls Teams. Marist is connected to the Myaree store, but there is also a Whitfords Krispy Kreme shop.

A word from the President A successful season on all levels Firstly a BIG thank you to all our club members and volunteers. The season has progressed relatively trouble free thanks to your commitment and support, and everything s looking good as we head into our last remaining few rounds. Auskick is winding up now and everyone involved has done a fantastic job in making it a seamless year. Congratulations to Josh Murphy from Auskick for taking out the Volunteer of the Month for June and Amy Woods, Head Coach of the Junior Girls Team who was awarded July s Volunteer of the Month, sponsored by Wright Real Estate. Our Juniors are all tracking well with some outstanding development of skills and team play that I have observed on my rounds. The youth teams are performing well with Years 8, 9 and 10 looking to make finals, with the Year 11s on the cusp sitting in fifth spot. The 12s have been trying hard against some very good opposition. These results are testimony to our youth coaching vision. Well done to all our coaches and our dedicated team of parent mentors working closely with them. To all our coaches, managers and parents, now is the time to start talking next year to maintain player numbers for 2018. There are some exiting initiatives from the WAFC that will help clubs/teams with smaller numbers as they look to downsize teams for 2018 back to 15-16 players a side for the Years 7,8 and 9s. This will help us feed smaller rosters into two teams. However they will run parallel 18 a side comps in those age groups. This will mean no matter how many we have in an age group, game time is assured. All this is to be confirmed, so stay tuned. We have the trophy awards nights coming up and the AGM, so please consider making a contribution to this great club by joining the committee, as we have a number of retiring members. There are still many dedicated committee members to run the club, but they will need a hand. So be a part of it. Don t ask what the club can do for me what can I do for the club. With apologies to JFK. Again well done all and thank you. John/Jack Penniment President I Marist FC 0439 988 533
