On the beach with Southside Newsletter March 2018 General Update Volume 3 Whilst the March comp had to be rescheduled to the following Sunday 11 th March because of the massive change in weather conditions during round 3 in true Southside style we had a great BBQ out of the wind behind the Club trailer near the shower. Happy Easter from Southside In this issue General update IMB sponsorship President s report Contest Director s report Once again the amazing fruit platters from our Club Fruitologist Pete Small on both March Comp day 3 rd and the 11 th helped turn both days into great events. The sunrise and nice little wave on the 3 rd, as seen in the photos before the southerly hit, made it look possible that we might be able to hold the event and get off the beach in time. But alas Huey had other ideas. In my many years in the Club it is the first time I can recall a monthly comp being cancelled / suspended during the heats. It was only through the mid- week efforts of Jon Lavers and Rod Menzies that we were given approval to reschedule the March Comp on this occasion. A big thank you guys, especially as the waves were much better on the 11 th. 5 Minutes with. Photos from March 2011 2010 Our sponsors Late news Membership Remember you have to be a financial member to surf from April onwards. For your convenience you can pay online, post your membership or emails to committee@southside.com don t forget to include your name on any EFT payment so we know whose paid IMB Bank Club Sponsorship Some great news for our club from our Club Championship sponsor IMB Banking. Through their local manager Ms Kay Warland IMB Banking has granted Southside Malibu Club the ability to be noted as a Refferer for anyone taking out a housing loan. So what does this mean? In a nutshell if you mention and not Southside Malibu Club when taking out loan the Club will receive a small commission AT NO COST TO YOU. You also get the benefit IMB great market interest rates. Ok so what you may say what s in it for me why should I do it? Well unlike anything else going about in the banking industry the Club will in turn give something back to you around 50% of the grant. This will be in the form of say a new standard Carverly Surfboard for a larger loan or a new steamer etc. AND importantly your Club gets the balance of the grant to then return to you and the others members during the year. How often to you get a WIN WIN outcome, especially if you get a great loan at low interest AND a surfboard to boot!!!. If you are in the market for a home loan or just want to do some banking just hop in to the bank and see our good friends Branch Manager Kay Warland and her staff Lyn and Nola, just let them know you re from Southside. President s Report I am away at the moment up at Cresso, and am writing this under trying conditions so I ll make it short. We were blessed What a day, especially after the Sunday before, when we were literally blown off the beach! 3-4, glassy, and as pretty as a picture! Congratulations to all that surfed well, and there were plenty that did. New BBQ seemed to work well, not only great waves, but we were well fed too! Thanks to all those involved. We had a nice little After comp beer up at Northies. Cold beer on a hot day always goes down well, Don t forget you are all invited, after every comp day! All the best Lads and Lassies, see you all next comp day. Rod Menzies El Presidente.

Contest Director s Directors Report Hi Everyone, Thanks for all your help this year, and I hope you have a great Easter. Well what an interesting month we had in March, on Sunday the 4 th we completed 2 heats and got blown away in the 3 rd heat. So, to all those members who were able to make the continuation of the competition on the 11 th well done. It was a beautiful day, and we managed to set up in the sand patch lookout on the Diagonal Track, just north of Wanda, so it was a relatively easy set up and pack up. Again, rights were pretty much the order of the day with some nice 4 to 5 footers to be had. The winner of the March competition was Tim Vanderlaan, who made the best of the conditions, well done. At the other end of the spectrum, Mark McNamara who thought he strained his leg during the competition, later found out it was broken, so he will be on light duties for some time. All the best Mark for a speedy recovery see you soon. This month I have changed the format of the Competition Report to make it more comprehensive and to give competitors a better view of where they came and how they are going. I think this is a better way of presenting the results and I hope you agree. I have also re-published last month s (February) results in this format, so as to allay some concerns about possible errors. Please note, I am always open to your comments. Anyway, all the best. Thanks everyone, See you in the water, or at the April Comp, Rossgo SSMC Contest Director

5 Minutes with. This Month we catch up with SSMC last to come first to leave SEAN "HOGGIE" HOGAN. HOGS gives us some insight into what s going on in that melon of his life. When did you start surfing and where abouts do you mainly surf. i couldn t tell you the first time i got on a board i figure dad would have been getting me in the water as soon as i could walk, im a hills angel Any surfing experiences that really stand out. I usually have good sessions down at Culburra beach and I ve had great waves at crescent head. Other than that not really. Favourite surf spot The SSMC Comp Bank. Favourite surfers or any guys with style on a wave that gets you excited. I find Alex Knost and Joel Tudor quite arousing, not only for their surfing but there perception of surfing and how they live their lives. I like watching Dane Reynolds and Craig Anderson on shorties, Mason Ho has an epic style too. You pull up to a bay there is no crowed and its perfect at 4ft, offshore and peeling with a sand bottom while out the back is a huge bombie with massive drops and crazy walls. Which one do you choose and why. I would run down the beach with my whole quiver and would alternate on the 4footers all day until my arms were spaghetti. I m famous for.. poor logic Is there anyone you ve never met before but would love to of course! there s hundreds people I d like to meet but Emily Blunt would be a good start i think Traditional surfing with heavier log type boards or lightweight boards hi-performance surfing.

Logging! i don t believe in "HP" unless your board weighs over 10kg you aren t really longboardin Favourite place to getaway from Sydney. Culburra Beach Best excuse for dropping in. I thought you got the last one Contest you d love to be in or see. J-bay, I d love to surf in any WSL contest. Getting to surf the greatest waves in the world with only 2 other people, yes please. Thanks Sean. I plan to catch up with one member, chosen at random, each month for a 5 minute interview. See you round Paul Detmold Vice President Maldives Surf Trip. If you are interested in doing a Maldives boat trip? So far.. We have booked the Haira from 28th July to 4th August for 8 nights (check out the link below). https://www.perfectwavetravel.com/surf-trips/maldives/northsouth-male-atolls/the-perfect-wave-haira-male-atolls The boat will be travelling around the Male Atolls where we will be surfing world class breaks like Jails, Sultans, Chickens, Honky s, and Cokes etc. All waves that suit Mals or short boards. We currently have eight (8) confirmed starters and any extras will bring the price down. The total cost for this exclusive charter excluding airfares is $26,535 AUD at current exchange rates. It takes 9 guests in total so that is: $2,948pp based on 9

$3,316pp based on 8 If anyone is interested in joining the trip please contact Rod Harty or email the Southside Committee. Confirmed starters: Rod Harty John Wonham. Lindsay Sharp Jason Blanch Andy O Sullivan. Chris Menzies Rod Menzies Andrew Taylor Rod Harty Treasurer When did you start one surfer s story I went to Cronulla Primary School in Burraneer Bay Road. In 1958 I was in class 5A with Peter Meldrum who later became my neighbour. In our class there was also Alan Sharpe and Ross Chipperfield. Along with a few other class mates we all played Baseball for Caringbah Baseball Club on Saturdays. It was a great time. In another class there was Bobby Brown and Frank Latta who both had started to ride surfboards. Bobby was a member of Wanda SLSC and started making a name for himself riding in the surfboard events. Peter & I were keen to start surfing but it was a lot of money for a surfboard, so we just dreamed about it. Peter was a gifted artist and did lots of sketches of surfers on huge waves, we both did. The following year (1959) Bobby was really doing well on the contest scene. Frank, Sharpie, and a few others were all surfing. Peter & I just dreamt about surfing, drew pictures of waves, surfboards & surfers and went to every surf carnival in the area to watch Bobby but all we could do was go body surfing after school and on weekends. We started making our own handplanes and bought flippers. We did everything except ride a surfboard. We would sometimes venture up to Wanda Beach on our pushbikes to body surf and started meeting some of the young guys in the surf club. One of the guys told us on the quiet that a club member left his surfboard in the boatshed and he didn t lock

it up. Peter and I decided that we should borrow the board and start to surf. So, in December 1959 my neighbour (and best friend) and I snuck into the boatshed and borrowed the surfboard. The board was a hollow plywood imitation of a balsa Malibu type board. It was probably about 8 6 and had a plug in it so you could drain the water out after a surf, it also weighed a ton. We dragged it down to the shore break and took turns trying to ride it. We spent hours in the water having a great time. We drained the board dry and carried it back to its spot in the boatshed and came back the next day and did it again and again and again. When anybody asks me When did you start surfing? I answer back December 1959. We never got caught borrowing the board, however we had started to meet some of the guys that were surfing on real (balsa wood) surfboards. We would go down the beach and started hanging out with the Alley guys. One of the guys was Billy Penrue who just happened to know my older brother Gordon. Gordon and Billy spent some time spearfishing together. Billy introduced Peter & I to more surfers, particularly the guys that surfed the Point. We started body surfing The Point and ventured out on some of the bigger days. Even though I was only eleven years old I felt quite comfortable out The Point. In 1960 we started High School and went to Caringbah High the day it opened. Peter was in class 1AC and I was in class 1BC. The C stood for Cronulla. Everyone that was in a C class were going to Cronulla High School which was scheduled to be opened in 1961. Billy Penrue who started at Caringbah High with us was to stay at Caringbah High. A few months into the new year Peter & I had saved enough money to by second hand boards. Peter bought his from a house just near the old Primary School, it was shocker. He took the fin off and glassed it onto the other end thinking it would go better! Peter rode some pretty big waves out The Point on that board. I bought my board from Coles Marine Centre in Croydon Street Cronulla just behind the main Street. My board was an 8 9 Ferris balsa pig board. It cost 10 ($20), I

later found out my board had previously belonged to Doug Whylie (RIP). He had traded it in on a new Coles Marine Centre model. A year or so later old man Coles sold out to John Rhodes Surfboards. The Alley crew circa 1960. That s me third from the right next to Al sharp in the white top, Billy Penrue took the photo. That s Bill s brand-new Jackson balsa board. I remember borrowing it. We were now part of the Cronulla Surf scene.
