These busness servces many wth a global reach are a vtal part of the martme ndustry, and a vast number of servce companes are based n London and across the UK. Brtan s unmatched for ts expertse n shpbrokng, nsurance, and legal and fnancal servces. More vessels are fxed through UK-based shpbrokers, more captal provded va London banks and funds, and more vessels nsured here than n any other locaton n the world. Englsh law s also appled to more shppng contracts than the law of any other country, and London has the hghest concentraton of solctors, barrsters and arbtrators specalsng n martme ssues and dspute resoluton. Ths range of actvtes means the UK s often seen as a one stop shop for marne matters. Many people enter these sectors after a career at sea, but many more choose to enter shppng havng establshed themselves n professonal servces. It means graduates n law, economcs, fnance and many other dscplnes many of whom have never thought about a martme career fnd themselves becomng a crucal part of the ndustry. Every ndustry and every area of socety depend on the precse and effcent work of engneers. Engneers provde technologcal solutons to the problems, ssues and deas that affect every area of our lves. There are roles for engneers n the martme sector on shore and at sea. Marne engneers are nvolved n the desgn, constructon, nstallaton, operaton, mantenance and repar of the man propulson engnes and auxlary machnery and systems found n all knds of shps, boats and offshore nstallatons. Marne engneers work on engnes and auxlary equpment n the boatbuldng and shpbuldng ndustres and assocated companes. A number of engneerng dscplnes such as mechancal, electronc and structural are nvolved. Marne engneers need to understand the effects of wnd, waves and corroson. Shps, boats, underwater structures, and the systems wthn them must be capable of operatng n demandng condtons. Marne engneers employed by merchant shppng companes work on engnes and dfferent knds of vessels, from cruse shps to tankers. They are responsble for the operaton and mantenance of the engnes, as well as the electrcal and electronc equpment. 6 - Careers n the martme sector Careers n the martme sector - 7 Marne Scence Seventy per cent of the Earth s surface s covered by oceans and seas. We are relant on our oceans and seas for many thngs, although most mportantly for food, explotable energy sources (such as wnd power, ol and gas) and toursm revenue. It s easy to see, therefore, how our health and the health of our planet depends n no small part on the condton of our oceans and seas. Merchant Navy A career at sea offers a wealth of exctng opportuntes for anyone lookng for adventure and a job away from the normal humdrum of a desk job. The Merchant Navy s the collectve term for commercal shppng and ncludes a varety of vessels from cruse shps to tankers and cargo shps of all descrpton. The world s oceans contan some of the rchest areas of bodversty. Our seas are already showng the effects of clmate change and we must ensure that marne ecosystems are suffcently healthy to be reslent n the face of changng condtons. The UK has one of the world s rchest marne envronments. As an sland naton we are responsble for a sea area over three tmes larger than our land area. We have about 20,000 km of coastlne (roughly equvalent to half way round the world). Over 8,000 anmal and plant speces have been recorded n our seas and the number contnues to grow as scentsts dscover more lfe n our oceans. Marne scentsts are nvolved n research, analyss and forecasts n relaton to the oceans, ther lfe forms and coastal areas. They analyse the sea and ts nteracton wth the land, atmosphere and sea floors and use the nformaton ganed to predct changes to the earth s nfrastructure, nform statutory legslaton and encourage envronmental protecton. Marne scentsts are employed by unverstes, nternatonal organsatons, commercal companes, government agences, not-for-proft organsatons and marne research nsttutes. Ths fast movng and technologcally advanced ndustry requres hghly traned seafarers workng across navgaton, engneerng, electrotechncal and on-board servces dscplnes at both offcer and ratng levels. There are a varety of entry routes avalable to start a career at sea wthn the Merchant Navy, whch ncludes fully sponsored tranng programmes and apprentceshps. Wth world- class nsttutons and a robust tranng system, UK seafarers are sought after all across the world and the range of sklls they acqure durng ther tranng enables them to thrve n a compettve ndustry. Those who decde to pursue a career at sea by followng the offcer tranng route wll, on completon, be n a management poston ensurng that the vessel and ts crew are safe, all the machnery s mantaned and the cargo reaches ts destnaton on tme and ntact. Ratngs are the support staff workng on vessels and drected by the offcers to ensure the runnng of the shp s a safe and effcent operaton. There are also roles for those nterested n on-board servces and hosptalty, on vessel such as cruse shps and passenger ferres. 8 - Careers n the martme sector Careers n the martme sector - 9 Naval Archtecture Naval archtects are prmarly nvolved n the desgn of vessels whch move just above, on or under the sea. These nclude tankers, contaner shps, passenger ferres, warshps, drllng platforms, submarnes, hovercraft, yachts and other small vessels such as landng craft, dvng support vessels and unmanned submersbles. Naval archtects work on the safe, economc and seaworthy desgn of small boats and yachts as well as on shps and submarnes. They can specalse n constructon/ converson, managng the whole process from the desgn board to the fnshed vessel. Ther work ncludes plannng the constructon process, the supply of materals, fttng-out and testng. There are also specalsed techncal problems to be solved n areas such as cargo handlng. Certan organsatons, such as classfcaton socetes, fleet owners and flag states, employ naval archtects as shp surveyors. A shp s montored durng ts desgn, constructon and throughout ts lfe to ensure that t s safe and seaworthy and meets other statutory rules and regulatons. Naval archtects, marne engneers and nautcal surveyors often work together carryng out tests, surveys and procedures. Naval archtects may also work n research. There are also opportuntes n rg fabrcaton and stng for the ol and gas ndustres. Those operatng at Chartered and Incorporated Engneer level n naval archtecture usually have the most responsble jobs. They are nvolved wth brngng n new technologcal nnovatons and advanced desgn and producton methods and ensurng that exstng technology works as effcently as possble. Engneers usually also have manageral responsblty. Engneerng Techncans typcally lead small, specalst teams n the detaled, hands-on engneerng work. Ports & Harbours Every year, 65 mllon passengers, and 500 mllon tonnes of cargo 95 per cent of the UK s total mports and exports move through UK ports. Qute smply, Brtsh ports keep the economy movng. As an sland naton, the UK requres everythng from deep-water contaner ports to small harbours. Ports support the needs of ol and gas tankers, ro-ro, lqud and dry bulk, ferry and cruse companes, and every knd of commercal, mltary and lesure use of the sea magnable. Ths varety of port facltes provdes opportuntes for every possble port-based career. Ports form an essental part of the UK logstcs chan, whch means as well as marne dscplnes there are opportuntes for martme professonals n port operatons, engneerng, warehousng, transport, plannng, safety, securty, and a host of other busness areas. In recent years, new natonal occupatonal standards, apprentceshps and qualfcatons have been developed to support the wde range of sophstcated, modern servces offered by UK ports. Many of these schemes recognse and ncorporate marne qualfcatons and experence. Many countres and nternatonal companes look to tap nto the experence of the UK s strong port sector, whle major ports elsewhere n the world especally n emergng markets use Brtsh expertse. You could be safeguardng the hgh seas, delverng humantaran ad when natural or man-made dsasters strke or protectng UK forces n foregn waters. No matter what you do n the Naval Servce, you ll play a key part n vtal operatons all around the world. From mantanng cuttng-edge equpment to plotng helcopters or provdng hosptalty there s a place for everyone. A future n the Naval Servce provdes a rewardng career flled wth adventure, possbltes and job securty. Brtan s hstory s ntmately ted wth that of the Royal Navy and whle the organsaton s gong through an exctng perod of change, there s never been a better tme to jon. The ntroducton of the new Queen Elzabeth class arcraft carrers, Type 45 Destroyers and Astute class submarnes send a clear message about the role that the Unted Kngdom plays n global securty. Shpbuldng & Boatbuldng Shpbuldng s the busness of buldng large ocean-gong vessels usually of steel. Boatbuldng s the term used for the constructon of smaller vessels from materals such as wood, steel, alumnum, glass fbre or new composte materals. There are opportuntes n shp and boatbuldng at every level. The worldwde shpbuldng ndustry has changed n recent years domnance has moved from the West to the Far East partcularly South Korea and Chna. In the UK, there are currently a small number of shpyards engaged n buldng large shps. These may buld specalst vessels such as the RSS Davd Attenborough, or, often, shps for the Royal Navy (the UK s a leader n warshp producton an example beng the HMS Darng, the frst of a new generaton of destroyers whch, t s clamed, can defend the cty of London from arcraft and mssle attack sngle-handedly!). There are also a number of smaller shpyards buldng smaller vessels such as tugs, ferres, fshng and survey/research vessels. Boatbulders construct boats typcally up to about 50 metres n length both boats for lesure (from luxury power boats to salng dnghes) and small commercal craft. There are also manufacturers of marne equpment such as sals, engnes, electroncs and boat fttngs. Most modern boats are made n a factory envronment, but there are also some boatbulders that buld tradtonal wooden craft. Boatbuldng for the lesure ndustry s thrvng. 12 - Careers n the martme sector Careers n the martme sector - 13 Superyachts A superyacht s, by defnton, any yacht over 24 metres (79 feet) n length that s about the length of a tenns court. There are many hundreds of superyachts salng the seas and oceans today they can be motor or sal, and they employ thousands of crew members from around the world. The largest superyacht n the world at the moment s 164 metres (538 feet) n length that s larger than a Royal Navy Destroyer! However, the average length of superyachts today s around 45 metres (148 feet). Ownng or charterng one of these mult-mllon-pound superyachts s the doman of the rch and famous, but behnd the glamorous, glossy façade, there s a whole team of workers keepng everythng shp-shape. The number of superyachts beng bult s ncreasng each year, and there s now a shortage of sklled workers to crew them. Workng on a superyacht s certanly not a holday, but the rewards can be generous and t s a great way to see the world n style. Workboats & Tugs The workboat sector covers a wde varety of vessel types from tugs and harbour launches to larger multcats and the fast crew transfer vessels often seen gong n and out of many of our ports today. These vessels usually work wth small crews of 2-6 persons, who cover a wde varety of dutes as they work wth a range of contractors on port constructon and nfrastructure projects or supportng the offshore energy ndustres, constructng and operatng offshore wnd farms. The work tends to be qute vared allowng crew to quckly gan a wde range of experences. The vessel Master wll be supported by multpurpose workboat crew members who may have ganed experence n other marne sectors or have come straght nto the ndustry through a Workboat apprentceshp. Large crew wll have a Mate or Offcer of the Watch assstng the Master wth watchkeepng dutes. UK operated Workboats are currently workng all over Europe and n many other parts of the world e.g. The Mddle East, South Amerca, the Carbbean and West Afrca, so ths s an excellent way to make a career at sea and travel to many parts of the world.
