INTRODUCTION Termnatng Head 58246--1 (shown n Fgure 1) s desgned to termnate dscrete wre n MTA--100 IDC closed--end receptacle connectors wth lock (ramp) and wth lock and polarzng tabs. Slotted contacts for nsulaton dsplacement termnaton are pre-- assembled on 2.54--mm [.100--n.] centerlnes n each color--coded housng for a specfc wre sze. The head must be nstalled n Pstol Grp Manual Handle Assembly 58074--1 or Pstol Grp Pneumatc Handle Assembly 58075--1. For head nstallaton and removal, refer to Instructon Sheet 408--6790 for the manual handle assembly and 408--6789 for the pneumatc handle assembly. For detaled connector descrpton and applcaton requrements, refer to Applcaton Specfcaton 114--1019. Read these and all referenced nstructons thoroughly before usng the head. All numercal values n ths nstructon sheet are n metrc unts [wth U.S. customary unts n brackets]. Dmensons are n mllmeters [and nches]. Fgures are not drawn to scale. Reasons for ressue of ths nstructon sheet are provded n Secton 8, REVISION SUMMARY. 2. DESCRIPTION The head serves as a gude and support for the connector durng termnaton. Features of the head (shown n Fgure 1) and ther functon are as follows. Wre Inserter forces the wre nto the two slotted beams of the contact. Note that t provdes support for the contact beams when applyng nserton force on the wre. Adjuster (Inserton Rod) s a pston for the wre nserter and regulates wre nserter travel. Feed Slde automatcally postons the connector after each termnaton. Locatng Pawl (or Ant -Backup Pawl) algns the connector for nserton, and retans t durng termnaton. 3. SETUP AND TEST INSPECTION The adjuster (nserton rod) s preset for wre szes 28 through 22 AWG. If the wre s beng nserted too deeply or not deeply enough nsde the contact, t may be necessary to adjust the depth of the wre nserter or, n addton, f the pneumatc handle assembly s beng used, t may be necessary to adjust the ar pressure. Proceed as follows: 3.1. Setup 1. Determne the wre sze, and select the approprate color--coded connector from Fgure 2. 2. Usng a small knfe, cut off the wre retaners (stran relef) of the connector. Ths wll provde a clear vew for nspectng the connector for a properly termnated wre n the contact. See Fgure 3. Wre retaners are removed n a connector for testng only. DO NOT use such connectors for producton applcaton. 3. Make a test termnaton accordng to Steps 1 through 5 of Secton 5, TERMINATING PROCEDURE. 4. Push the connector out of the rght sde of the head. 5. Check that the wre nserton depth s wthn the dmenson gven n Fgure 3. To obtan the wre nserton depth, measure from the front of the contact beam to the center of the wre as shown n Fgure 3 - or - measure from the front of the contact beam to the back of the wre and subtract the wre dameter dvded by 2. If t s not, proceed as follows: For the manual handle assembly, refer to Secton 4, WIRE INSERTION DEPTH ADJUSTMENT. For the pneumatc handle assembly, f the wre s nserted too deeply (more than the requred wre nserton depth), refer to Secton 4, WIRE INSERTION DEPTH ADJUSTMENT. If the wre s not nserted deeply enough (less than the requred wre nserton depth), ncrease the ar pressure by 69 kpa [10 ps]. Repeat the termnaton procedure and check the nserton depth. Contnue n ths manner untl ether the proper nserton depth s obtaned or the ar pressure s set to 483 kpa [70 ps]. If the proper nserton depth s NOT reached at 483 kpa [70 ps], return the ar pressure to 276 kpa [40 ps], and refer to Secton 4. 6. Inspect the termnaton accordng to Paragraph 3.2. 3.2. Termnaton Inspecton (Refer to Fgure 3) Refer to 114-1019 for detaled explanaton of the termnaton nspecton requrements. 1 The requred wre nserton depth s wthn the dmenson gven n Fgure 3 (refer to Step 5 of Paragraph 3.1 for measurement). 2 The end of the wre extends past the contact beam by at least 1.52 mm [.060 n.]. 3 The contact beams are NOT deformed. If damage s apparent, replace the contacts n accordance wth the nstructons packaged wth the connector. 4 The wre nsulaton s NOT ncked or cut n any area other than the two contact slots. 5 The wre extends past the wre retaner (stran relef) of the connector. 4. WIRE INSERTION DEPTH ADJUSTMENT (See Fgure 4) 1. Remove the head from the handle assembly. 2. If the wre s nserted too deeply (more than the requred wre nserton depth), reduce the wre nserton depth by turnng the adjuster 1 / 6 of a revoluton clockwse. The wre nserton depth wll be reduced by approxmately 0.20 mm [.008 n.]. If the wre s bottomed n the contact slot, ths ndcates that the adjuster s set to the maxmum wre nserton depth DO NOT turn the adjuster counterclockwse; otherwse damage to the head may occur. 5. TERMINATING PROCEDURE (Refer to Fgure 5) There s no wre preparaton requred. 1. Insert the connector nto the left sde of the head. 2. Algn the contact to be termnated wth the wre nserter of the head (shown n Fgure 1). Make sure that the locatng pawl rests between the connector ndex rbs. 3. Insert an unstrpped wre nto the funnel area between the contact and the wre nserter untl t bottoms on the tool base. 4. Squeeze the cam handle (manual) or depress the trgger (pneumatc) of the handle assembly, and hold t untl the ratchet releases (manual) or the wre nserter bottoms (pneumatc). 5. Release the cam handle or trgger. The wre nserter wll retract and the feed slde wll automatcally advance the connector to the next contact poston. If the wre s not nserted deeply enough (less than the requred wre nserton depth), ncrease the wre nserton depth by turnng the adjuster 1 / 6 of a revoluton counterclockwse. The wre nserton depth wll be ncreased by approxmately 0.20 mm [.008 n.]. The locatng pawl wll move up and down as the connector s automatcally advanced through the head. However, f movement s obstructed, or f desred, the locatng pawl can be depressed and the connector moved manually out of the RIGHT sde of the head. When turnng the adjuster counterclockwse, make sure to check the wre nserton depth after EACH 1 / 6 revoluton. If the adjuster s set past the maxmum settng, damage to the head may occur. Wre Inserton Depth Adjustment Turn CLOCKWISE to Reduce Wre Inserton Depth 6. Repeat Steps 2 through 5 untl all contacts have been termnated. 7. Inspect each termnaton accordng to Paragraph 3.2. 6. MAINTENANCE AND INSPECTION 6.1. Daly Mantenance 1. Remove dust, mosture, and other contamnants wth a clean, soft brush or lnt--free cloth. DO NOT use objects that could damage the head. 2.
