Jan Gibson: Agent Email: jlgibson@uky.edu August, 2017 Cooperative Extension Service Perry County 933 Perry Park Road Hazard, KY 41701 (606) 436-2044 Fax: (606) 436-9961 www.ca.uky.edu/ces Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences 4-H Academy Two Perry County 4-H ers graduated from the latest year of the NRESci 4-H Academy recently. Taylor Roark, PCCHS, and Taylor Colwell, PCCHS, both began as scholars in 2014 with the 1 st year s program of Water education. They completed their 2 nd year in the Forestry program and the final year of Wildlife studies. Tiffany Langdon, BHS, is also a graduate of this program. This last year she served as a Teen Ambassador. During Tiffany s tenure, she has traveled with the Academy to Georgia on the Marine Science and Ecology trip last summer. She has served as a KY delegate to the National AgriScience Conference held in Washington DC. Alexa Deaton, PCCHS, is currently completing her 2 nd year as a scholar. Robert Bowling, HHS, and Daniel Slone, PCCHS, have just completed their first year. This latest session was held at Natural Bridge State Park. Congratulations to all the graduates. 1

Taylor Roark Taylor Colwell Tiffany Langdon 2017 Run For the Hills Campaign There has been a change in the annual Run For the Hills campaign for this year. The Foundation for Appalachian Kentucky has turned this community asset building campaign over to the Perry County Community Foundation. Of the 14 non-profits of last year, only 7 will be supported this year and the other 7 in in 2018. Perry County 4-H Program was drawn in the first lot so will be included in this year event. Teen leaders, Skyler Turner and Ava Dixon, served as ambassadors at this drawing. 2

4-H ers Learn to Sew and Serge It s fun to make things that you can use. Youth that signed up for the Annual 4-H Sewing Workshop found this out. Some of them made a handy tote using quilted fabrics or the more advanced class of a duffle bag and matching cosmetic bag. Volunteer leaders, Nancy Pratt and Cheryl Leabo, along with FCS agent Glenna Wooten worked with the girls with skills in both using the sewing machine as well as the more skilled-based serging machine. Below you can see by the smiles, the girls were very pleased with their project. In Memoriam Many 4-H ers that have attended 4-H Camp over the years, may remember Mr. James Phelps as our neighboring 4-H agent in Knott County that served so wonderfully as the Rifle Instructor or taught them all the Night Hike sounds of frogs and birds, pointing out the glowworms in the woods. We will miss you, Jim! Rest in Peace. 3

Kentucky 4-H Communications Day The Kentucky 4-H Communications Day hosts literally hundreds of 4-He rs from all over the Commonwealth each year in a variety of categories of speech, demonstrations and mock interviews. Pictured above are four of the successful 4-H ers that competed in this event. Brady Adams (EPE/PCCHS) received a blue ribbon (1 st place quality) and also placed third in his division of the Talk Meet. Both Ally Slone (Willard/WPE) and Kailey Gayhart (Chavies/WPE) achieved first place quality in their respective speech divisions. Olivia Maggard (Chavies/WPE) won third place in the state in the youngest category of age 9 in the state! First time Perry County has competed in the Mock Interview category a relatively new category. Skyler Turner (HHS) represented district 2 in this category. She also received a blue ribbon. Written Communication Event Another relatively new communication skill building contest in KY 4-H is the categories in the Written Communication Contest. Categories include: poetry, songwriting, monologue, essay, press release, and PSA. This year Ava Dixon (HMS/HHS) entered in the Essay category and received 3 rd place with a red ribbon. Congratulations to all our 4-H ers for a job well done! Perry County 4-H ers Learn Food Safety Skills 4

Dr. Jacquie Jacob, UK Specialist, worked with an active group of 4-H ers this summer in preparation of the KY 4-H BBQ Contest in July. The youth learned to safely prepare the charcoal grill, to prep the chicken halves, and to make sure they follow safe food handling guidelines with raw meat. After cooking, the whole delegation enjoyed eating the BBQ along with a few side dishes.
