EXETER LADIES LEAGUE WELCOME Joining a new golf league can be a bit overwhelming. The Exeter Tuesday Ladies League is a fairly large and well organized league and this information sheet is meant to give new members insight on league procedures and make them less confusing. We are happy to have you join us and are looking forward to a great season. HANDBOOK: New members should be sure that they receive a league handbook, which is given out at the beginning of each new season. This handbook contains important league information including the names of officers and committee members, by laws, attendance requirements, procedures, rules, website address, and the calendar. Please take the time to read through the booklet and keep it accessible. SIGN UP SHEETS: The league is now on a system that requires weekly sign ups for league participation. This is done to facilitate the pro shop with an accurate number of tee times. Sign up sheets are posted more than a week in advance so be careful and read the various sheets that you are signing. Please be aware when signing up for the League Championship, it is a two week event. If you do not want to play the League Championship, you can still play the normal weekly tournament. All league sign ups, postings and informational sheets are situated outside the pro shop in the overhang area and remain there throughout Tuesday league play. Some league information may also be posted through the week in the ladies locker room and on the league website (listed in handbook). FOURSOMES: The tournament committee setups up foursomes and starting order for those foursomes (about a week in advance). Every effort is made for fairness of starting order and groupings to ensure that everyone gets a chance to play with different people. There are certain tournaments in which you are given a chance to choose your partner and/or foursome. These tournaments are denoted in the hand book calendar by **. If you want to play and were unable to arrange to sign up in a foursome, please add you name to sign up sheet and the tournament committee will make sure you are assigned a group. It is also important to let the committee know whether you walk the course or ride in a cart to help in setting up groups. STARTING TIMES: Starting times are listed in the handbook and do change during the summer months. It is very important that you arrive and be ready to play at least a Half hour before your group is due to start. Starting times can change and groups sometimes go off faster than expected. Arriving early will ensure time to check in with the pro shop, sign up for future play and get instructions for the daily tournament. It is also a good time to get to know people and socialize. WEEKLY TOURNAMENTS: Our league is set up in divisions (A, B, C, & D) according to handicaps. Your division may change throughout the season and you should always be aware of your league handicap, as weekly prizes usually involve handicap consideration. There will be a special sheet for posting the weekly scores according to the type of tournament that is being played that week. These scores are usually gross (unadjusted) and net scores but sometimes are different according to the tournament. Your group can help you with this posting. PLEASE make sure first name and first initial of the last name is entered on cards. It is necessary to have two scorecards per group dated, signed, and deposited in the designated box to ensure accurate scoring for the tournament committee to use in determining tournament winners each week.

HANDICAPS: All players are required to have a USGA Handicap (www.usga.org). All players must post their golf scores in order to insure accurate handicap calculations. You can get your GHIN through Exeter Country Club by paying in the Pro Shop using check or cash or through another club that you may belong to. You should be able to post your weekly scores at Exeter, at your club, or on the internet. BIRDIES and CHIP INS: Located in the same overhang area you will find a voluntary sign up and containers (a quarter each) for chip ins and birdies. The quarter(s) and sign up must take place before play in order to be eligible for the money prize(s). After the round if you did indeed have a chip in or birdie, then you should designate so on the sheet. Also, there is a lovely birdie tree in the ladies locker room. If you get a birdie you need to sign your name and designate the hole where the birdie took place for a bird with your name to appear on the tree. RINGERS: End of the year prizes include ringer total awards. A ringer is your best gross score on each hole throughout the year. On Week 1, you submit your gross score for each hole on the ringer slip and also note the same scores in your handbook ringer page. Then each subsequent week submit only the improved hole scores and also keep track of the improvement in your handbook. There is a designated box for ringer score slips which must be dated and attested. CANCELLATION PROCEDURE: If the league needs to cancel due to rain on a Tuesday morning, the President or Vice President and Secretary will decide. If cancellation is agreed upon, a phone chain is formed for calling all those scheduled to play that day. The President and Secretary will call a member from each group scheduled to play, who in turn will call the next person on list. If you call and get no answer or get an answering machine, please leave a message but continue down the list until you actually talk to a person. This ensures quick notification for everyone. IMPORTANT make sure you have a league roster with all phone numbers. RULES: The Exeter Ladies League is a fun league but because prizes are given out we ask that in fairness to everyone in the league that you play by USGA rules, are aware of the local rules listed in the handbook (which may vary slightly depending on League agreement) and keep accurate scoring. PACE of PLAY: Because this is an eighteen hole league and Exeter Golf Club has heavy public play, we ask that you be aware of pace of play and keep pace with the group in front of you. A list of suggestions for speeding up play may be found on the Webpage. If you wish a hardcopy, please request it from President. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have regarding the Exeter Ladies League. WHEN TEMPORARY GREENS IN USE Rules for temporary greens: On a day when temporary greens are used, when the ball gets to within "the leather" or the length of a putter grip you can add one stroke and be finished with the hole. Please remember to make note of which greens you played that were temporary, so we can be sure that everyone that day played the same conditions.

HANDICAPS & Stroking a Card Understanding handicaps and stroking your cards are necessary tools for determining net scores in the weekly tournaments. You are expected to post your scores each week. You must first be aware of your current GHIN HANIDCAP for the course you are playing. This can differ from your USGA index. The index is the base from which you start and, depending on the slope or difficulty of the various courses, you may add or subtract strokes to get your course handicap. Most pro shops can give you that number for their particular course. For example: if your USGA index is 20.1 your Exeter GC handicap would be 21. You would then stroke (put a small mark) on your card on the holes that you get strokes. Since you are playing 18 holes and the handicap is 21 you would get one stroke on each of the 18 holes but would also get extra strokes on 3 more holes (21-18=3). You would get strokes on the hardest 3 holes on the course as designated by the handicap hole number on the card. So at Exeter hole number 2 is the hardest hole or the 1 handicap hole, you would get an extra stroke here, also on hole number 10 (2 handicap hole) and hole number 9 (3 handicap hole). In other words, with a 21 handicap at Exeter GC you would get 2 strokes on holes #2, #I0 & #9 and I stroke on all other holes. This method is used for stroke play tournaments. In match play situations when a player is playing against one other player, you would compare the two player s course handicaps and subtract to get the difference. The player with the higher handicap would then get strokes on the most difficult holes. For example, Player A is a 22 handicap and player B is a 20 handicap. The difference is 2 strokes (22-20=2). Player A would get two strokes and they would he on handicap holes with the values of 1 & 2 which at Exeter are holes #2 and hole #10. Note: You must use the Women s handicap holes designation, not the men s.
