It is amazing how quick the time is flying by! On January 20th the Youth Action Committee hosted a County Wide Bowling event that 61 4- Her s participated in. This was a great opportunity for everyone to get to know each other and have a little fun. The picture above is of Megan Valentine and Sierra Valentine at the Bowling Event. We also hosted a 4-H Night at a Dubuque Fighting Saints Hockey game and sold about 50 tickets to 4- Her s and their friends and family. We look forward to doing more events like this in the future! Hopefully our last snow storm is out of the way and we can look forward to the weather warming up a little bit! With warmer weather comes thoughts of fair. The deadline to have your project areas and livestock information listed in 4hOnline is May 15th (rabbits are July 1st)! If you need help entering this information into 4hOnline please stop by the Extension Office, give me a call or send an email. I am here to help!! Applications are available at the Dubuque County Extension office or on our website and are due to the Dubuque County Extension Office by May 1st. Livestock weigh-in Information Sheep/Meat Goat Weigh In April 27 10AM-12PM Dubuque County Fairgrounds Cost: $2/ animal for tag fee 10 Goats and 10 lambs may be weighed-in Recommended weight: 40 pounds for lambs Any 4-H er or FFA member exhibiting at the Iowa State Fair needs to weigh in their state fair animals at a State Fair weigh-in. The nearest State Fair Weigh-In is at the Delaware County Fairgrounds on May 4th from 8am 10am. There is a $5 fee for each market lamb or goat identified as a possible state fair entry. Please let the Dubuque County Extension Office Know if you plan on weighing in at Delaware County. Swine Weigh In March 23 7am 11am Western Dubuque High School, Ag Room Cost: $2/ animal for tag fee Recommended weight: under 50 pounds at time of weigh-in. A member may weigh-in up to 8 pigs..

Project Day Join us for Project Day on April 13th in the 4-H Building at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds! Registration begins at 8:45AM with sessions starting at 9AM. The cost for this event will be $10. Friends are welcome at this event and need not be enrolled in 4- H. This will only be a morning event, lunch will not be included. Registration forms are included in this newsletter. All of the different project areas are showcased on the registration form. Please pre-register both 4-H ers & guests by April 5th! If you would like to volunteer your time to help with project day please contact Liz at the Extension Office. Communications Day May 18 Join us for a day of inspiring presentations, cool exhibits, and side-splitting skits all brought to you by your 4-H friends! Get the edge by giving a presentation, show off your skills in a Share the Fun skit, perform a skit, show everyone how to make some really neat stuff in a working exhibit, or try an extemporaneous speech on for size. The possibilities are endless! Sign up by May 1st to participate and possibly earn a trip to the Iowa State Fair!... and don't forget to come cheer on your friends! Presentations and extemporaneous speaking will be held at the extension office starting at 10a.m. Working exhibits and Share-the-Fun skits will be presented in the afternoon at Kennedy Mall. Clothing Event July 9 Show off your best outfit at the 2013 Dubuque County Clothing Event July 9 at 5pm at the Extension Office. Participate in Fashion Revue (created garments), Clothing Selection (purchased garments), or the $15 Challenge. Entries are due June 15. More information will be in your County Fairbook.

Rabbit Workshop The Dubuque County 4-H Rabbit Committee is hosting a rabbit workshop on April 6th in the 4-H Building at the Dubuque County Fairgrounds. Registration will be from 8:30am 8:45am if you are interested in making a carrier for your rabbit. For all others registration will begin at 9:15am. ALL rabbits that are shown at the 2013 Dubuque County Fair must be tattooed. At this workshop you will have the opportunity to have two of your rabbits tattooed and be shown how to tattoo the rest at home. The Extension Office will have all of the equipment needed to tattoo your rabbits available for check-out. Lunch will be served as well. In the afternoon there will be a mock show that you can participate in. Please fill out the attached registration form and send back into the Extension Office with payment by March 27th. Checks can be made payable to Dubuque County Extension. The cost to attend this workshop is $10. Be a STAR Volunteer Get involved on Youth Action Committee! For anyone committed to making a difference in the lives of our Dubuque County 4-H Youth. Members work on county wide events, rules, & policies that make lifelong impact on our 4-H members. Next meeting March 12th at 6:00PM at the Extension Office Way we Live Award May 15th Deadline If you are planning on taking any building projects or livestock projects to the 2013 Dubuque County Fair they must be entered into 4hOnline by MAY 15th!! If they are not entered by then you will not be able to take them. This means if you are planning on taking something in woodworking please make sure it is listed under your project area tab in 4hOnline. The Iowa State Fair is searching for six farm families to recognize with the Way We Live Award at the 2013 State Fair. These families must exemplify farm values derived from hard work and a love for the occupation of farming. Nominated families should show dedication to animal agriculture in their daily lives and in the lives of their family members. Winners will receive a prize package including $250 cash, Fair admission tickets, parking, Fair food coupons, and recognition in the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning center during the fair. The entry deadline is Wednesday may 1st. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW TO SHOW Read fair book rules and regulations carefully for each division. Each exhibitor (except horse, dog and pet exhibitors) must attend FSQA or have a current test on file. Market Beef: Market beef were tagged and identified at weigh-in in December. Animals must arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11a.m. and will be released Wednesday at 4p.m. All animals will be weighed on Monday following check in. Animals will be sold according to their show weight with a 3% allowance for shrink.. Breeding Beef: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Cow/Calf pairs must have been shown as a breeding heifer and all calves must be born after January 1, 2012. Animals must arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11a.m. and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. All animals must be checked in at the scale on Monday following check in. Dairy: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Animals must arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 12:30pm and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. Bucket Bottle Calves: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Written records must turned into the extension office by July 1st. All animals arrive on Monday between 8am and 12:30pm and will be released following the bucket/bottle show Monday night. Meat Goats: Market Goats are tagged and identified at weigh-in. Exhibitors need to verify their information in 4-H Online before May 15th. Animals must arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11am and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. Horse and Pony: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Entry information must include photos or drawings of the animal. An intent to participate form needs to be on file at the extension office by July 1 indicating the classes exhibitors will enter. Animals must arrive by 8am Thursday and will be released after the show. Pets: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Pet folders must be submitted to the extension office by July 20. Animals must be checked in by 2pm on Friday for conference judging. Poultry: Poultry must be from a Pollorum-Typhoid clean flock and will be tested upon check-in at the fairgrounds. The charge for testing is $0.50 per bird Animals should arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11a.m. and will be released Wednesday at 4p.m. An intent to participate form is due July 1. Rabbits: All animals must be identified in 4-H Online and an intent to participate form is due by July 1. Animals should arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Thursday between 6-7pm. Market Sheep: Market Sheep are identified at weigh-in. Exhibitors need to verify their information in 4-H Online before May 15th. Animals should arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11am. and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. All animals will be weighed on Monday following check in. Breeding Sheep: All animals must be identified by May 15th in 4-H Online. Animals should arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 11am and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. Swine: Swine are tagged and identified at weigh-in. Exhibitors need to verify their information in 4-H Online before May 15th. A Premise ID number must be online for each swine exhibitor. Animals should arrive on the fairgrounds for check in on Monday between 8am and 12pm. and will be released Wednesday at 4pm. All animals must weigh between 240-300 pounds to be blue ribbon eligible. All derby animals will be scanned for carcass quality. We want YOU!...as a livestock committee member! The Dubuque County Fair will be here before you know it, and we are seeking committed, enthusiastic volunteers interested in helping out in ANY livestock area. Involvement can be as big or small as you would like or your schedule will allow. The committees are beef, dairy (cattle and sheep), horse, pet, poultry, sheep and swine. Let s make this the best year yet for 4-H shows in Dubuque County!

This year it will be in Cedar Rapids at the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center. We will be learning about the dairy industry, competing in quiz bowl, playing games, and visiting Cedar Valley Dairy in Blairstown. This is a two-day, one night event for youth ages 9-18 with Dairy Science Club members being the chaperones and planners of the event. If you would like more information on the Iowa Youth Dairy Coalition or Registration forms please contact the Liz at the Extension Office. The Registration and Parental Permission Forms are the two that we need filled out and back to 123 Kildee by March 15th! Club News The Bankston 4-H Friends will be hosting their annual breakfast on Sunday, March 17, serving from 7:30-12:00 at St. Clement's Hall in Bankston. Serving pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, doughnuts, toast, coffee, milk and juice. Come out and enjoy a great breakfast with another 4-H Club!
