2016/2017 Season Season Returns January 2017 Edition 8 ryde-athletics.org.au rydelapublicity@gmail.com Publicity: Sandra Prizmic Photographs: Sandra Prizmic and Parent Contributions Trans Tasman Challenge Ryde NSW Blues Four talented U11 and U12 Athletes were selected to represent NSW in The Trans Tasman Challenge at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium on Sunday, 15 January, 2017. Pictured above (L-R) are: Krishani Coffin (U11G), Natasha Fairhall (U11G), Oliver Smith (U11B) and Benjamin Stevens (U12B). All four athletes reported back expressing that they had an awesome experience. To read all about their experience please see pages 4 and 5 of this edition of The Footprint.

President s Message - David Sunderland Happy New Year! Welcome back to all Competing Athletes and Their Families What a fantastic Season Return! Athletes returned refreshed and eager to participate after the Christmas and New Year break. Although many athletes and families were away on holidays in January a record number for attendance was set for the return of the season in January. On the 14th January there were 222 Ryde athletes in attendance, whilst on the 21 st January there were 288 Ryde athletes. These figures do not include Tiny Tots or visiting Northern Suburbs athletes. The attendance numbers for the return of the season was a big increase from last years numbers. The Ryde City Games (Multi Event) saw a huge increase in returning athletes. Last Saturday, at the Ryde City Games (Multi Event) a record number of athletes competed. 322 Ryde Athletes and 130 Northern Suburbs athletes. The total number of competing athletes at the Ryde City Games totalled 452 athletes. What a great morning of competition at the Ryde City Games (Multi Event). I hope all athletes and parents had an enjoyable morning. Northern Suburbs athletes have now joined the Saturday morning competition at Ryde. I would like to extend a warm welcome to Peter O Donohue (Northern Suburbs President) and to all the North s athletes as well as their families. We hope that you enjoy the Saturday morning competition competing at Ryde. It is truly great to see the mix of colours out on the track as well as witnessing the great sportsmanship displayed by the two clubs. It is also great to observe the new friendships and relationships evolving between the athletes from the two clubs. A few visitors have also been in attendance from other centres which has added to the mix of colours. The welcoming of visitors to our Saturday morning program highlights the inclusive nature of Ryde Athletics. A lot of work has been done behind the scenes to ensure a smooth transition for North s athletes. Thank you to everyone that has worked collaboratively behind the scenes. A huge thank you to all the Age Managers and especially all of the Ryde athletes for your cooperation in warmly welcoming North s athletes into your age groups. I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with everyone to ensure that the Saturday morning competition continues to be a success. Thank you to everyone that has provided feedback in regard to the running of the Saturday morning program. A lot of positive feedback has been received. A huge thank you to the many volunteers who step up when needed. The Centre appreciates the collaborative joint effort from all its members. The Saturday morning program would not be a success without the many skills that individuals input into the club in a variety of different ways. The supportive nature of Ryde Athletics members makes it the wonderful club that it is today.

The Ryde City Games (Multi Event) was a huge success. It was great to see so many neighbouring athletes from Northern Suburbs accept our invitation and attend our annual Ryde City Games. The competition was strong with many athletes pushing hard with the extra competition from North s. The morning wound up with excited athletes receiving their medals on the day. The final medallists for the day were the U15, U17, Opens (U35), Masters (35-49) and the Legends (50+) who all finished up hot and tired but soon recovered with excitement for the medal presentation. Thank you to everyone for their patience whilst waiting for the results to be finalised in order for medals to be handed out on the day. Thank you to all the volunteers who contributed to make the day a success. A huge thank you to the volunteers who were kept busy in the results room. Your support and hard work is much appreciated. During the Ryde City Games a new PA system was trialled. Thank you to everyone for the feedback that has been received. At the moment members of the committee are reviewing available options. We are updating the PA System as many members have expressed that messages over the last few years have been very difficult to hear and to understand. Before investing in purchasing a new system the committee would like to ensure that the best possible decision is made and the best possible PA system is put into place to ensure announcements are heard clearly from everywhere on the track. Modifications and upgrades to the canteen are currently being undertaken. Finally, GOOD LUCK to all athletes who will be competing at the Regional Championships on the 11th and 12th February. I look forward to watching all athletes that qualified for Regionals compete over the weekend. Adam was the winner of The Ross Foster 440 Gift also known as The Magic Minute courtesy of Sandy Smith Ryde s famous Starter. The Ross Foster 440 Gift was a new race introduced at The Ryde City Games (Multi Event) in honour of Ross Foster a well known and respected identity of the Ryde Athletics Community. Both these races have been the initiative of David Sunderland our new 2016/2017 Season Club President. Ryde s proactive President David Sunderland presenting Emily Ralph with a medal. Trans Tasman Challenge The Trans Tasman Challenge is for athletes in the U11 and U12 age groups, from both NSW and Auckland. Every second year, a team from NSW (boys and girls in both the U11 and U12 age groups), travels to Auckland for the Trans Tasman Tour. On alternate years, a team from Auckland travels to Sydney. This year the Challenge was held in Sydney at Campbelltown Stadium on Sunday, 15 January. Ryde Little Athletics had four athletes selected to represent NSW. The athletes from Ryde Little Athletics were Natasha Fairhall (U11G), Oliver Smith (U11B), Benjamin Stevens (U12B) and Krishani Coffin (U11G - Reserve). All athletes involved expressed that they had a wonderful time and each athlete had an extremely rewarding experience. The 2017 Little Athletics NSW vs Auckland Children s Athletics was the 41st Trans Tasman Challenge. Little Athletics NSW had 100 representatives plus 14 reserves. There were 87 competitors from Auckland. As well as the Sunday challenge, all athletes were involved in a number of scheduled activities. On Thursday,12th January a compulsory Gala Day was held at Campbelltown Stadium. The Gala day was a good ice breaker for both teams as athletes were given an opportunity to meet each other whilst competing in a number of different events. On Friday, 13th January, the NSW athletes were involved in Host a Kiwi Day. Many NSW athletes took the Kiwi athletes on a sight seeing tour of Sydney. From the photos that were shared with me it was apparent that the athletes from Ryde had a marvellous time playing host to their new Kiwi friends. On Sunday, 15 January, 2017, The Trans Tasman Cup was held. All NSW competitors wore their NSW uniform with pride. Athletes enjoyed the build up to the competition with a team photo being taken as well as badge swapping between the teams. This was very popular with athletes attaching badges to their hats. March Past - Opening Ceremony Krishani Opening Ceremony NZ Haka Performance Benjamin The Opening Ceremony included a march past with Team Captains carrying the NSW Little Athletics team flag. Both National Anthems were sung. Following the National Anthems Oliver - Host a Kiwi Day New Zealand sang a song and then performed a most impressive Hakka. The NSW team responded with an Aussie Chant. The Trans Tasman Cup was declared open after the Team Captains took an oath on behalf of their teams. All Ryde Athletes competed well. Please view their results on the following page. All Ryde competing athletes were selected to participate on a relay team! Yeah! Oliver Smith won SILVER medals in the U11B 800m and the U11 4x400m Boys Relay B Team. Natasha Fairhall won a GOLD medal in the Mixed U11 Field Relay B Team and Benjamin Stevens won a GOLD medal in the A Team Field Relay. A fantastic effort and results by our Ryde Little Athletes! Relay competitors could only compete on one relay team. Field relay teams consisted of 3 girls and 3 boys per team. Two teams could be entered by NSW or NZ - An A Team and B Team. Each competitor had one throw at Shot and Discus. They also had one Long Jump attempt. Distances were then added together. Track relay teams were 4x100m and 4x400m. The relay teams were a great friendship building experience with NSW competitors working together as a team for NSW - friendships were definitely made. Competitors are all keen to catch up at State if they qualify. All Ryde relay competitors walked away with a medal and all competitors at the Trans Tasman Challenge received a participation medal which was very impressive to look at.. Great sportsmanship was apparent everywhere at the Trans Tasman Cup. Throughout the challenge athletes were shaking hands and always congratulating each other. Truly great to see. However, one memory which really stood out was when a NSW runner fell at the finish line and 3 NZ competitors raced over to comfort her and helped her up...it was really wonderful to witness such kindness and great sportsmanship. Overall, The Trans Tasman Challenge was a very positive experience and I would highly recommend it. The Challenge was well organised, lots of fun, great sportsmanship and many friendships were forged. The New Zealand, Auckland Children s Athletics athletes were very strong competition and had some fantastic athletes. However, NSW won the cup! Thank you to Cassandra Board for providing me with all the information for the above report. Your effort is very much appreciated.

Aim to arrive in plenty of time to find parking and to get your child to marshalling at least 20min before the event. As parking is minimal parking can at times be difficult to find. Ryde Athletics has been allocated a number of duties at the Regional Championships that need to be filled. Thank you to everyone that has already volunteered for a duty at Regional by putting their name down on the duty roster. If you haven t already done so could you please commit to a duty of your choice. If duty vacancies exist prior to Region then they will need to be filled by parents of qualifying athletes. Please assist by choosing an event and timeslot that suits you. The duty roster can be found on the noticeboard in front of the clubhouse on a Saturday morning. Thanking all volunteers in advance for your cooperation and assistance. Please remember that all volunteers at Regional MUST wear CLOSED shoes. Many Ryde parents failed to do this at Zone. Registration number, age patch and orange Jetstar sponsor patch should all be securely affixed to the Ryde Centre uniform and in the correct position. To view the uniform requirements please click here. For more information about the Regional Carnival please visit the Ryde Athletics Regional Page on Region Photos/Roving Photographers I will be at Region both days. Whilst watching my own children compete I hope to photograph as many Ryde Athletes as I can. Please let me know if your child is receiving a medal and I will try to photograph them on the podium if I am free. Please send through any photos of your children competing as I would love to put them in the Regional Footprint. Thank you to everyone who has made an effort to contribute to the Footprint so far by providing photos, write ups or for providing me with information. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Ryde Record Breakers Hall of Fame Nine Ryde Little Athletics records were broken during the months of November and December 2016. Seven new records were broken during these two months and they are new additions to the Ryde Record Breakers Hall of Fame. These seven new records were broken by Benjamin Nogajski, Georgia Arcus, Daniel Bowtell and Portia Amy-Wilson. Ben broke his own High Jump record for the U16 and U17 Boys with a jump of 1.85m. Once again on the 26/11/2016 Ben was watched and cheered on by the U11 Boys as well as Ryde s High Jump super coach Lynda Calder. Ben on this day also broke the U16B Shot Put Record. Ben due to other commitments is not always in attendance at Saturday competition. However, it seems that when he does turn up he breaks the U16 and U17 Boys High Jump record as well as the U16 Boys Shot Put Record. A very inspiring athlete to watch. Georgia Arcus one of Ryde s very talented long distance runners broke the U13 Girls 3000m record on the morning of 3/12/2016 with a time of 11 min 49.70sec. The previous record was set in 2008 by S Jones who had a time of 12 min 5.1sec.Georgia is a fantastic long distance runner, she also holds the U13 Girls 1500m record which she broke early on in the season back on the 17/09/2016. Daniel Bowtell was another U17 Boy to break his own records in the U16 Boys and U17 Boys 300m Hurdles with a time of 44.00sec. This is a new event this year with the benchmark record being set by Michael Matheson on the 24/09/2016 with a time of 44.60sec. Daniel first broke this record on the 15/10/2016 with a time of 44.30sec. Finally, on the 17/12/2016 I was very surprised to hear that Portia Amy-Wilson broke the U14 Girls Triple Jump record as that was a very busy morning for Portia due to her participation in the Xmas Inclusive Day. Congratulations and well done Portia! Thirty six records in total have been broken at Ryde Little Athletics between the first week of competition in September until the final week of competition prior to the Christmas break. Watching Ryde s talented athletes out on the track on a Saturday morning and being part of the action has been one of the highlights for me as an Official Photographer on a Saturday morning. It has been most exciting to watch the athletes breaking records. Thank you to everybody who has given me a shout out whenever a record has been attempted by an athlete. Congratulations to Ben Nogajski, Georgia Arcus, Daniel Bowtell and Portia Amy-Wilson on their fantastic achievements and a huge congratulations to all of the Ryde Little Athletes that have broken records so far this season. The boys were keen to check out the height of the bar and were really amazed at its height.

You did a great job today! It went really well so congrats!! Just wanted to let you know. Just wanted to let you know that yesterday was amazing.. HI Sandra and Everyone at Ryde Athletics Thanks so much for inviting us to join you at this wonderful celebration last weekend. It was a great day and I really enjoyed being there. Congratulations to everyone involved in organizing it - I know many many hours go into putting together events like this, and it was a great success. Thank you for the invitation to your Christmas celebration and ceremony today and for making me feel so welcome. Thank you so much for the invitation to Saturday s Celebrations. Being a Life Member for a long time now, I reflect that I joined Ryde Women s Athletic Club as a 14 year old in 1955 for the 55/56 Athletic Season @ The Sydney Sports Ground. I really enjoyed the competition to watch & the special Official part of the day. The Club is absolutely buzzing & thriving, due to a huge lot of hard work & love of sport, in particular, Athletics. Fabulous, & thank you again. Keep up the good work. Thank you for my special Ryde hat. It will be out there in the Community. Best of the Season to all. Dear Sandra, Thank you to both you and David for the invitation. I certainly did have an enjoyable time. I can only imagine the amount of time and effort that went into organising such a wonderful event. Thank you once again for your hospitality and the beautifully framed cap. It is a perfect colour match with my framed Eastern Suburbs Roosters jersey and will hang alongside it very nicely. The Northern District Times were very interested in all the refurbishments and upgrades that have occurred at Dunbar Park this season. An article was featured on page 8 of this years first publicationof The Northern District Times. Tegan Seymour (U6G) was photographed doing her run up for her long jump and featured in the newspaper article. Our official guests Mr John Alexander, Clr Jane Stott, The Hon Victor Dominello were all photographed in the newly constructed long jump pit alongside Justin Sunderland, Portia Amy-Wilson and David Sunderland as well David s famous golden rake. However, Alyssa Lowe from the U14G stole the show with a Long Jump performance on the front page of The Northern District Times. Alyssa was pictured flying mid air on the front page of the Northern District Times. To view the News Local version and some of the action from the day please click here.
