2 President s Message David Sunderland Regional Championships Ryde Little Athletics was strongly represented again this year at the Region 5 Regional Championships on Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th February, 2017 at The Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen. There were many fabulous results. Overall, Ryde Little Athletes were awarded 15 Gold, 25 Silver and 20 Bronze medals. As Region 5 is considered to be one of the most competitive regions in NSW all Ryde athletes should be very proud of their achievements on the day. We had high numbers of athletes finish in the top 10 and it was wonderful to see so many Ryde Athletes on the podium. The conditions this year with the extreme heat was very testing for athletes. Ryde athletes did well to keep hydrated and to stay cool. Many athletes took advantage of the water sprinkler showers based around the track to cool off. All athletes should be very proud of the great sportsmanship that they displayed under the demanding conditions that were placed upon them. Lets hope that next years conditions will be much more bearable than this years. Congratulations to the 52 Ryde Athletes that have qualified for the State Track and Field Championships which will be held this weekend on Friday to Sunday, March 2017 at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre. The Ryde Athletics community would like to wish all Ryde Athletes the best of luck and we look forward to hearing all about your fantastic experience competing at State. The 2016/2017 season will finish off on Saturday,25th March with the annual Fun Day/Age Trophy Day. A fun morning is planned. Don t miss out on all the fun activities planned for the morning. It is hoped that all athletes and their families will attend the celebration to finish off the season. I look forward to enjoying your company on the 25th March. 16 The High Jump A Creative Piece of Writing by Max Merifield (U11B) When Max returned to school on the Monday, the following day after the Regional High Jump Max was given a task in a creative writing lesson. The task was to put yourself in somebody else's shoes and to write about an experience from the other person s perspective. Max, a good friend of Ivan s and also a competitor in the U11B High Jump chose to write about the U11B Regional High Jump experience from Ivan s perspective. Thank you to both Max and Judy for sharing Max s most impressive creative writing task with myself and Ivan. Thank you for allowing it to be shared with all the members of Ryde Athletics. Max is most proud to have his writing published in The Footprint. Well Done Max for your fantastic piece of writing! Good luck to Max and Ivan at State! Congratulations and Good luck to all the Ryde Little Athletics High Jump qualifiers for State: Lara Bocabella(U9G), Chris Moala(U9B), Isabella Azizi(U10G), April Howison(U10G), JayKay Rauque (U10B), Eleanor Plummer(U15G) and Connor Latham(U15B). Finally, a huge thank you to Lynda Calder (Ryde s High Jump Super Coach) on your fantastic efforts with coaching Ryde s magnificent High Jumpers. Some great results have been achieved. The High Jump By Max Merifield (U11B) My name is Ivan, and I am 10 years old. I have 4 brothers and sisters and all of us love doing Little Athletics. Today we have a BIG athletics carnival. Around 10 clubs from Northern Sydney come to Narrabeen to compete against each other. I have been training all year just for this high jump event and now it s finally here. As the judges call the rules, my palms are sticky with sweat from the butterflies backflipping in my stomach. I remember last year s competition and the springy kids who beat me. I feel nervous but excited for another year of competing. I stare at the kid who won National and smashed Trans-Tasman and I m hoping I can outjump him. I imagine what it would be like to win, with people clapping and my name being called as I get up on the podium. The judges set the bar at 1.10 metres and everyone cleared it without too much trouble. Gradually as it went higher the boys began knocking it down. My friend Dom got out at 1.30 metres, and at 1.37 with 5 of us left, my other friend Max got knocked out and that was the end of jumping for them. I was the only one from my club Ryde left, and soon after there were only two of us remaining. I stared at the national winner and realised the bar was already 14cm over my best at 155cm. After the national champ missed his last attempt, at this height all the nerves were with me. I had one more attempt, I walked to my run up mark, sprinted to the curve, sprung up, arched my back, lifted my bottom and flicked my legs over the bar. I came down from the bar and landed softly on the mat. I looked up, the bar was still and the spectators went crazy. My friends congratulated me and I felt like a champion. Max Merifield competing in the U11B High Jump. Max finished 5th with a jump of 1.35m which qualified him for State. Some great friendships have been formed in the U11B. (Above L-R) Max Merifield, Ivan Prizmic, Dominic Herngren, George Srour and Matthew Stitt.
