THE PRESIDENT S BAT Welcome to our second Winter Hawk Talk. All of our teams are now into their two day matches. We have had mixed results so far with our Premier side currently leading their compe on. Some of the teams may have been one division too high and are struggling a bit but with outright victories now possible it is easy to jump up the compe on table with a good win as Ray Frazer s boys found last weekend when they knocked off the top side in the B2 compe on. It is always good to beat Peninsula. Our junior teams are having similar successes to their senior compatriots with the U14 Tomahawks narrowly in second place. Some of the junior teams are racking up their frequent flyer points with regular trips over the river. The U13 Falcons have two weeks at Albany Creek and then six weeks straight on the south side. Luckily the games start at 11.45am. Over the next few weeks we may have to play on some fields that aren t in the best condi on so please be pa ent. Could all skippers or team organisers please be aware of the payments that are due to the club for home game ground fees. It is $50 for a One day and $70 for two games. These can be paid directly to the club or be given to Ray or myself. Could teams playing on South Pine No.2 leave their cars outside the gate on days when there are Junior AFL games being played. They normally finish around 1.00pm and it is OK to bring cars in then. It is a safety issue with lots of young children running around the buildings. I o en receive complaints from SPSA and AFL about this issue. Thank you to those teams who are regularly sending match reports to Eddie who is doing a great job compiling this Newsle er. Thanks again to all involved. I hope the weather gods look favourably on the remainder of our season. Steve Casey

HOUSEKEEPING When parking at South Pine Sports Complex please be aware of any adults and children walking through the car park at any time and keep your car s speed to the absolute minimum at all times. All teams please be mindful that we are sharing Field 2 with AFL and drive cautiously when entering the area through the gate. When parking your car near the cricket nets on Fields 1 and 2 please be aware that your car may be in the hitting zone of practicing players and is in danger of being damaged. PLEASE ensure that all rubbish is placed in the bins provided around the cricket fields and removed by each team at the end of training and games. We are very proud of our facilities and it is important that we keep the Hawks Nest clean and safe for everyone to enjoy. PLEASE be aware that the rest rooms provided are for everyone to use and keep them in an acceptable condition. Send in to bat by the opposition was fortunate and the team was up to the challenge. Solid batting partnerships between Andrew and Will (41 runs) and Nathan and Nick (58 runs) set us up for a good, defendable total. Our bowlers didn t disappoint, everyone chipped in with a wicket or two. Congratulations to Danny and Zoheb on their first Senior wickets. Our fourth home game got off to a flyer, with Chris Brittain and Josh Lam putting together a 71-run partnership for the first wicket. Some powerful hitting by Chris resulted in a score of 72, including two sixes and seven fours. A couple of quick wickets saw the innings steadied by Tom Hadden with partnerships with Caelan, Casey and Josh Paul, with Tom pulling the last ball of the innings for a spectacular six to bring our score to 190. Our defense started out with some average fielding, with four dropped catches in the first few overs. The boys fought back, Jack taking one in the first over and Chris, not content to star with the bat, bamboozled the opposition middle order with his offies, taking 3/15. The North Moreton tail fought back however, but a couple of direct-hit runouts by Tom saw them fall well short, being 9/120 at stumps. Well done boys, but we really need to work on our fielding for the next game!. After the washout in our first round, the boys were pleased to be able to finish a game this time. Another strong batting performance on day one set us up for a great first innings win. After dismissing Kenmore for 148 we batted for about 15 overs to give our fieldsmen a rest and then ripped in to take a further six wickets. Charlie and Nick Scott combined well to have four caught behinds. It was a great fielding effort to take 16 wickets in a day, especially as we only had ten players. Well done boys. Tom won his fifth straight toss and elected to bat in good conditions. Things went south fairly quickly, losing wickets regularly to be 6/61 at one stage. A 40-run stand between Josh Lam and Josh Paul for the seventh wicket gave us some hope, opener Josh Lam playing a sensible steady innings, eventually being the last wicket to fall at 127. Thanks to W. Ides for being the high scorer with 35. Our defense started off shakily, with some wides given away early, until James broke through in the fifth over. Jack took another in the sixth with an out-swinger that caught their remaining opener fishing outside off, Casey taking a great full-stretch diving catch to his right, the ball sticking in his glove s webbing. Caelan also did well with the ball, taking three clean bowled with his late in-swingers, two of those in a row, unlucky not to get the hat trick. With a fielding performance much better than the previous game we managed to take wickets regularly, our spinners keeping the run rate down in the middle of the innings with Chris bowling four maidens and Pranav finishing off the tail taking two for zero. Well done boys, undefeated in the one dayers - a much better fielding performance in this game but our batting needs work heading into the two day games. Coach/Manager: PETER MCFARLANE

Winter 2013 Hawk Talk PAGE 23 U14N TOMAHAWKS 01 & 08/06/2013 1 st Innings 2 nd Innings Albany Creek Vs 10/153 0/24 Wynnum Sea Eagles 9/244 Batting: CHRISTOPHER BRITTAIN 101 Josh Lam 12* Jack Mackellar 6 Bowling: James Kennelly 3/22 Caelan O Callaghan 2/26 Jack Mackellar 1/12 Fielding: Catches to Tom Hadden (2), Caelan O Callaghan, Ryan Macnaught (1); Run-Out to Tom Hadden (1) Game Report: Losing the toss and being sent in to bat on a wet, soggy pitch that shouldn t have been used, we were under the gun right from the start. As wickets started to tumble, we were treated to a batting master class by Chris who, not having played on turf for two years, was able to choose his shots, leaving the bad, defending the good, and smashing the wayward. On 94 he hooked a loose one for six over square leg to bring up his maiden ton off 104 balls that included seven sixes and six fours. While the rest of the team s score was not up to scratch, the boys were able to hang around long enough with Chris to give him the strike. With a little over one hour remaining on day one, there was still something in it for our bowlers, with Jack and Caelan doing the damage to have them 3/15 in the seventh over. Our spinners, Pranav and Tom, managed to keep the run rate down, but in the end Wynnum were 3/50 at stumps. Day two and it would appear the weather Gods had conspired against us yet again, with the previous week being sunny and fine, enough to dry the pitch out and turn it into a batting paradise. The two batsmen from the previous week didn t even look like getting out, and passed our score without loss of another wicket. Eventually Ryan made the breakthrough in the 49 th over, and we managed to take another five to have them at 9/244 after their 70 overs. With an hour to play, Pranav and Josh Lam stayed at the crease to make 24 before stumps was called early due to fading light. Our bowling and fielding was much better this game, with 20 maidens being bowled, plus James on a hat-trick at one stage, with final figures of 3/22 from 10. Caelan also bowled well taking 2/26 from 14 at less than 2 per over. Once again our batting was not up to scratch we need to be more patient and use all of our allotted 70 overs in the coming games.
