Unlike many of my past golf partners, who feel that the nearest point of relief spot is always on the side where they have the best shot after the drop, the actual correct spot is the nearest. Using the cart path as an example here s how to determine the nearest point of relief: 4. Your find your ball way over on the left side of the cart path. Your closest point of relief is to the left (lucky you). See point A in the diagram. (Not sure what those two guys at point A are doing). Both right and left handers will find themselves off to the left
5. If your ball stops on the far right of the cart part, point B ), the closest is probably to the right side. Note in the image, the closest point of relief looks to be to the left of the path but that point is closer to the green so not allowed. 6. If the ball rests in the center of the path, your nearest point of relief is to the left if you are right handed and to the right if you are left handed. And here is why PROCESS: Put a tee on the path where your ball is sitting (You do not need to pick it up right now. Assuming you are right handed, take your stance, with any club, to the right of the path and note where the ball must be for your feet and the ball to be free from the path. Put a tee down where that point is. Now, with club in hand, go over to the left side of the cart path and find a spot where you can swing without hitting the path (Usually within 6 or so of the path). Place a tee where your ball needs to be so you don t smack the path. Now go to the spot where your (in-play) ball is and see which tee is closer. That will be your Nearest Point of Relief. Go to that spot and, using a club, measure out your one of two length relief. In the top left part of the diagram is a pictorial about a proper 1 club length drop. You do NOT need to go through this process on every drop. Usually the drop spot is usually painfully obvious, but if there is uncertainty (Like every drop in Team Play!) you will need to know how to do it properly to satisfy a disagreement. The rule of thumb for drops is this: If you are getting a free drop, you get 1 club length from the nearest point of relief. If you are dropping and taking a penalty, you get 2 club lengths. Yes, a club length is any club in your bag. It is NOT necessarily the club you will hitting, so pull the driver. You will see PGA professionals leaving the head cover on it to get an extra inch or two. IMPORTANT: If you take relief and a drop, you must take full relief, you cannot drop your ball back into the same hazard from which you are getting relief, no matter how nice the drop area looks.
