Steps to Becoming a Lifeguard National Lifeguards are highly skilled and trained individuals! o join our Aquatics eam you must be a minimum age of 16 and hold both your Lifeguarding and Standard First Aid certifications. See the steps below: YMCA Learn to Swim Level 7 (Preferred) Jr. Lifeguarding (Adv. aquatics program recommended) Bronze Star (Recommended) Bronze Medallion (Required) Bronze Cross (Required) Standard First Aid /CPR C/AED (Required) National Lifeguard (NLS) Pool Option (Required) Join a team of young people with a passion for safety and perfection in first aid, lifesaving skills, physical fitness, leadership and teamwork. Earn credit towards the YMCA Learn to Swim Levels 5, 6 & 7 Advance lifesaving course designed to prepare participants for Bronze Medallion. Emphasis placed on rescue drills, fitness skills and victim recognition. Prerequisite: Star 3+ First step in advance lifesaving. Prerequisite: Current Bronze Star (no age requirement) or minimum age of 13. Second step in advance lifesaving. Prerequisite: Current Bronze Medallion. Builds on the fundamental skills, knowledge and values of the Lifesaving Society to develop the practical skills and knowledge required by lifeguards. Prerequisite: Minimum age of 16 at time of exam (must be age 16 to guard in NL) and hold Bronze Cross, Standard First Aid, and CPR C. Recertification required every two years.
