The Chiefs were beaten 40-24 by the Atlanta Falcons at Arrowhead Stadium while the Bills fell 48-28 to the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. The Chiefs and Bills meet for the fi fth consecutive season with the fi rst contest at Ralph Wilson Stadium between the squads since 2005. The Bills have claimed victories in Kansas City in three of the last four seasons. Against the Falcons on Sunday, the Chiefs matched Atlanta s explosive offensive attack in the fi rst half, tying the score at 10-10 and 17-17 thanks to a 22-yard TD reception by TE Kevin Boss and fi ve-yard TD run by QB Matt Cassel. The Falcons pulled away with two third-quarter touchdowns and two fourth-quarter fi eld goals before RB Shaun Draughn scored his fi rst career touchdown run on a four-yard carry. Cassel fi nished 21 of 33 passing for 258 yards with a TD and two INTs for a 72.5 rating. RB Jamaal Charles rushed 16 times for 87 yards (5.4 avg.), including a 46-yard run in the second quarter. Draughn carried six times for 29 yards (4.8 avg.) with a TD while Cassel added 20 rushing yards on four carries (5.0 avg.), including his fi rst rushing TD since 2008 when he was a member of the New England Patriots. WR Dexter McCluster tied for a game-high with six receptions for 82 yards (13.7 avg.). WR Dwayne Bowe added three catches for 53 yards (17.7 avg.) while TE Tony Moeaki caught three passes for 37 yards (12.3 avg.). Boss fi nished with two receptions for 36 yards with a TD on his fi rst reception since joining the Chiefs. Defensively, LB Derrick Johnson led the team with eight tackles (seven solo). LB Justin Houston recorded a sack (-7.0 yards) and CB Stanford Routt forced a fumble. Buffalo fell behind 21-0 in the second quarter against the Jets. RB C.J. Spiller scored on a 56-yard TD run and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick threw three late TD passes, but it was not enough as the Jets scored in all three phases of the game and QB Mark Sanchez threw for three TDs. Spiller fi nished the afternoon with a league-best 169 rushing yards on 14 carries (12.1 avg.) with a TD. Fitzpatrick completed 18 of 32 passes for 195 yards with three TDs and three INTs, including one that was returned 40 yards for a TD by CB Antonio Cromartie. WR Donald Jones tied for a game-high with fi ve receptions for 41 yards and a TD. CHIEFS-BILLS SERIES HISTORY Sunday s contest marks the 44th matchup between the Chiefs and Bills. Kansas City has gone 18-24-1 (.430) against the Bills, including a 6-13-1 mark in games played in Buffalo. The teams are set to play for the fi fth consecutive season, but the fi rst time at Ralph Wilson Stadium since 2005. The Bills have won at Arrowhead Stadium in three of the last four years. Two seasons ago on Oct. 31, 2010, the Chiefs defeated the Bills 13-10 on a 35-yard fi eld goal by K Ryan Succop on the last play of overtime. In the last matchup at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Nov. 13, 2005, the Bills won 14-3 behind two TD passes from QB J.P. Losman to WR Lee Evans. Losman entered the game for an injured QB Kelly Holcomb and passed for 137 yards and two TDs for a 124.2 rating. Kansas City and Buffalo have met three times in the postseason, including the AFC Championship Game on Jan. 23, 1994 when the Bills won 30-13 over the Chiefs, who were led by QB Joe Montana and RB Marcus Allen. CHIEFS HEAD COACH - ROMEO CRENNEL Kansas City Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt and General Manager Scott Pioli announced Romeo Crennel as the club s 12th head coach in franchise history on Jan. 9, 2012. Crennel joined the Chiefs in January, 2010 as the club s defensive coordinator. On Dec. 12, 2011, Crennel was named head coach of the Chiefs after the first 13 games of the season. In the final three games under Crennel, the Chiefs went 2-1 with a victory over the previously undefeated Green Bay Packers. Crennel enters his 31st season as a coach in the NFL in 2012. He has coached in six Super Bowls and has been a member of five teams that have claimed Super Bowl wins. Before joining the Chiefs organization in 2010, Crennel served a four-year stint as head coach of the Cleveland Browns (2005-08). Prior to joining the Browns in 2005, Crennel spent four seasons as New England s defensive coordinator (2001-04). During that four-year span, the Patriots won three Super Bowls (XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX) and he was named the NFL s Assistant Coach of the Year in 2003. He also served as defensive coordinator/defensive line coach in Cleveland (2000), defensive line coach with the New York Jets (1997-99) and also coached in New England (1993-96), earning a berth in Super Bowl XXXI with that squad. Crennel s initial NFL coaching experience came with the New York Giants from 1981-92. During that 12-year span, he was part of New York s victories in Super Bowls XXI and XXV. Gailey served as head coach at Georgia Tech from 2002-07, becoming the first coach in school history to lead the Yellow Jackets to a bowl appearance in each of his first six seasons. He began his NFL coaching career as an assistant with the Denver Broncos from 1985-90 in various roles. In 1991, he became the head coach of the Birmingham Fire of the World League. CHIEFS CELEBRATE 50 YEARS IN KANSAS CITY The 2012 season marks the 50th year in Kansas City for the Chiefs. During a May 15 press conference at Kansas City s Union Station, Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt announced several plans and initiatives to thank fans and the community for their support through the years. Over the last fi ve decades, we have been honored to call Kansas City the home of the Chiefs, and in celebration of our 50th year in Kansas City, we want to say thank you to the best fans in the NFL, Hunt said. Below are the initiatives and plans that Hunt announced to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Chiefs football in Kansas City. PERSONALIZED CHIEFS NIKE JERSEY - All Season Ticket Holders received a personalized Nike Chiefs jersey with a name and number of their choice. - Each jersey will come with a Season Ticket Holder (STH) patch either sewn onto the jersey or left loose. CHIEFS FAN TOUR - The Chiefs have been traveling to cities in the Chiefs Kingdom to say thank you to the fans. CHIEFS RETURN TO JOPLIN TWICE OVER SUMMER In the immediate aftermath of the May 22, 2011 tornado that struck Joplin, Mo., Chiefs Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt committed to sustained assistance from the Chiefs organization in relief and rebuilding efforts. To date, the club and its fans have pledged more than $250,000 in support. On Aug. 23, more than 200 volunteers, including Chiefs Senior Vice President of Business Operations Bill Chapin, Chiefs Ambassadors Bill Maas, Anthony Davis, Shawn Barber and Tom Baugh, Chiefs Cheerleaders, Red Coaters and KC Wolf joined with representatives of the Joplin School District, organizers from KaBOOM! and members of the Joplin community to build a new Chiefs-themed playground at the Beacon Alternative School. The project, funded by the Chiefs, including donations received from the Kansas City community and an NFL Fitness Zone Grant, will serve Beacon School students, as well as hundreds of children in the surrounding neighborhoods. Today s kids spend less time playing outside than any previous generation in part because only one-in-fi ve children live within walking distance of a park or playground. This play defi cit is having profound consequences for kids physically, socially and cognitively. The new playground will provide hundreds of children in the Joplin community with a safe place to play for years to come. CELEBRATING COMMUNITY & THE NEXT GENERATION OF FANS - The club is committed to participating in more than 50 community events in the metro area with player and staff participation. - The Chiefs will provide 50 underserved elementary schools a Chiefs Play 60 Fitness Kit. 2011 TOTAL DEFENSE The Chiefs allowed 333.3 yards per game in 2011, ranking eighth in the AFC and 11th in the NFL. The club allowed 400 or fewer yards in 14 games, the team s most since accomplishing the feat 14 times in 2008. Kansas City was one of nine teams to allow 400 or fewer yards in 14 or more games in 2011. The Chiefs had 26 defensive takeaways in 2011, three more than in 2010. The Chiefs permitted 5.38 yards per play, ranking 10th in the AFC and 15th in the NFL. Kansas City fi nished 10th in the AFC and 16th in the NFL by allowing 47.8 advances per game (rushes and completions). The team permitted 765 total advances. Kansas City allowed 16 drives of 10 plays or more, only Denver (15) permitted fewer. Kansas City had the eighth-best third down defense (34.3%) in the NFL in 2011. Over the fi nal three games of the season, the Chiefs allowed only 14 third down conversions in 43 attempts (32.6%), which tied for the top mark in the league. Buffalo outgained the Chiefs 364- to-213 in total net yardage and possessed the ball for 37:02, compared to 22:58 for the Chiefs. The game, which fell on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on America, opened with a touching pregame ceremony that included a field-size American flag, a live rendition of 'Taps' played from the Shanksville, Pa. crash site, a flyover of A-10s from Whiteman Air Force Base and hundreds of Kansas City firefighters and police officers. Following the ceremony, Buffalo wasted no time getting off to a quick start, capitalizing on a RB Dexter McCluster fumble on the opening kickoff. Buffalo took an early 7-0 lead when Fitzpatrick found TE Scott Chandler on a four-yard scoring pass with 12:14 left in the first quarter. The Bills drove 26 yards on five plays in 2:39. The Bills increased their lead to 14-0 with 0:55 left in the first quarter when Fitzpatrick led a six-play, 75-yard drive in 3:37, capped off by a 27-yard touchdown pass to WR Stevie Johnson. TE Shawn Nelson added a key 35-yard reception on the play prior to the score. Fitzpatrick was three-for-three passing for 71 yards on the drive. Buffalo outgained Kansas City 117-to-42 in total net yards during the first quarter, including an 80-to-nine net passing advantage. On the first drive of the second quarter, the Chiefs appeared to have cut the lead in half when Cassel found TE Leonard Pope on a 19-yard pass in the end zone, but the score was overturned after a replay review. A missed field goal later on the drive left the score at 14-0. K Rian Lindell increased the lead to 17-0 with a 29-yard field goal with 6:42 left in the second quarter. The Buffalo scoring drive covered nine plays and 50 yards in 5:04. Following a Chiefs fumble, Lindell added a second field goal when he connected from 38 yards out with 5:38 remaining in the first half to give the Bills a 20-0 advantage. The Chiefs got in the scoring column when Cassel threw a six-yard TD pass to Charles with 1:46 left in the half. On the drive, the Chiefs went 81 yards on 11 plays in 3:52. RB Dexter McCluster contributed a 23-yard run and WR Steve Breaston s first reception as a Chief went for 20 yards to set up the score. With 4:19 left in the third quarter, Fitzpatrick hooked up with Chandler for a second touchdown from 11 yards out, giving the Bills a 27-7 advantage. The Chiefs ended up falling to the Falcons 40-24. The Falcons got into the end zone first when WR Julio Jones caught a short pass from QB Matt Ryan with 8:56 left in the first quarter. K Matt Bryant s extra point was good putting Atlanta on the board 7-0. The Chiefs pushed their way down the field in just over four minutes. WR Dwayne Bowe recorded his first reception of the game, hauling in a 23-yard pass from QB Matt Cassel. K Ryan Succop s 39-yard field goal made the score 7-3 with 4:06 left in the first. On the ensuing kickoff, Atlanta s RB Jacquizz Rodgers returned the kick for 77 yards before being pushed out of bounds at the Kansas City 24-yard line. The Chiefs defense put up a fight and the Falcons were forced to kick a 34-yard field goal from Bryant. On the eighth play of the Chiefs next drive, Bowe caught a pass from Cassel for a 21-yard gain. Once again, Bowe set his team up to score as TE Kevin Boss caught a 22-yard touchdown down the middle of the field. Succop s extra point was good tying the game at 10-10 with 11:45 left in the second quarter. The Falcons responded quickly with their own touchdown as Jones caught a 14-yard pass from Ryan. Bryant s extra point was good as the Falcons took back the lead 17-10 with 7:48 left in the second. On the Chiefs first play of the next possession RB Jamaal Charles blasted by defenders, running the ball 46 yards. As the Chiefs made their way towards the end zone, Cassel took matters into his own hands and ran for a five-yard touchdown, tying the game at 17-17 with 3:38 left to play in the first half.
