The Helpful Guide to Judging Trampoline, Tumbling & Double-Mini Trampoline by Gabrielle Gingras FIG Judge WARNING: This Guide is a summary of the CoP and the Canadian rules. Always refer to the official documents if any discrepancies or interrogations.

Common elements For the three disciplines, trampoline (TRI), tumbling (TUM) and double-mini trampoline (DMT), the elements are performed in one of three distinct positions (see Diagrams pages 15-16): Tuck or Puck Position: 1 The angle between the top of the body and the thighs must be equal to or less than 135. 2 The angle between the thighs and the calves must be equal to or less than 135. Pike Position*: 1 The angle between the top of the body and the thighs must be equal to or less than 135. 2 The angle between the thighs and the calves must be greater than 135. Straight Position: 1 The angle between the top of the body and the thighs must be greater than 135. * The pike straddle position is based on the same criterias as the pike position, in addition, the angle between the legs must be 90 ± 5 (see page 15). For all three disciplines (TRI-TUM-DMT), the evaluation for execution is based on a specific range of deductions and guidelines (see Diagrams pages 15 to 21): For single somersault, difficulty judges should evaluate the position of the element from the beginning of the take off up to the remaining 135 (before landing). For multiple somersaults, difficulty judges should evaluate the position of the element after take off from: Backward somersault 90 up to the remaining 180 (before landing) Forward somersault 135 up to the remaining 180 (before landing) In twisting saltos, the position of the feet need to reach ½* twist (180 ) rotation to be awarded the ½ twist. Feet rotation must be a complete twist* (360 ) to be considered a full twist. Rotation or flying phase: 1 Position of the arms: 0.0-0.1 Moving arms away from the body is acceptable to stop a twisting rotation. Diagrams page 19 for acceptable angles. 2 Position of the legs (includes bent knees, toes not pointed, legs not together): 0.0-0.2 3 Position of the body (includes head): 0.0-0.2 Opening and landing phase: 1 Opening of the somersault, keeping straight position (includes end of twist): 0.0-0.3 2 No opening: 0.3 3 TUM only: preparation for landing for multiple twisting and triple somersaults (upper body near or under 90 ): 0.0-0.2 4 Horizontal displacement (TRA only): 0.0-0.2 During the pass (TUM): 1 Loss of speed: 0.0-0.2 2 Deviation from the axis: 0.0-0.1 For tempos (TUM): 1 Pike started before 180 : 0.1 2 Legs too flexed at the contact phase: 0.1 3 Height at shoulder level: 0.1 4 Height above shoulder level: 0.2 For somersaults (TUM): 1 Height at shoulder level: 0.1 3 Height below shoulder level: 0.2 * The FIG rule states that the ½ twist is given as soon as the feet have completed ¼ twist (90 ). 1 See Appendice O. in the CoP (p. 59-61) for detailed tumbling execution guidelines

Common elements For all three disciplines (TRI-TUM-DMT), the following rules apply: Dress for gymnasts: Minimum difficulty: Each violation of the dress code will result in a penalty of 0.1 off the total score for each routine where the violation occured. Major violation may result in disqualification. Minimum DD s are expected and should be adhered to. Exceptions allowed for temporary reasons. No penalty will apply if minimum DD is not performed. Missing requirement: An athlete that misses one or more requirements from their routine or pass, will receive a deduction of 1.0 per execution judge, for each missing requirement. * In an incomplete routine or pass there will be no penalty for missing requirements, unless the number of missing requirements exceeds the number of missing elements (Ex.: 1 missing element, 2 missing requirements = -1.0). Crash Rule: Unsportsmanlike conduct : Talking to the athlete: One foot landing: If an athlete takes steps or obviously try to save the trick then it is not a crash. In addition, here are other indications to consider: 1 After landing on the soles of the feet, do they immediately fall or do they make any attempt to stand up, take steps? Do they show they have power in their legs and try to lift themselves? 2 Is there a preparation for landing, a pause, before they fall? If so, then the element is given even if they didn t take steps. An athlete that curses or displays an unsportsmanlike conduct during or after his routine will receive a deduction of 0.3 per execution judge. An athlete who receives instructions from a spotter and/or their coach during their routine will receive a deduction of 0.3 per execution judge, for each occurrence. If during an element* the athlete lands on one foot, there will be an interruption and the element will not be counted. * This rule is not valid for front or back landing elements. 2

Trampoline For trampoline, the following rules apply: Specific warm-up: Timing: Usually, the athlete will have a 30-second warm-up on the trampoline before preliminary (30 seconds for 2 routines) and final (30 second for one routine). Warm-ups can differ depending on the event. If the athlete exceeds that time, 0.3 will be deducted from the total score of the routine. In preliminary, the deduction is applied only once, on the first routine performed. When the chair of the judges panel signals the athlete, they have 60 seconds to start their first element. If the athlete exceeds this limit, there will be a deduction by each execution judge depending on the amount of extra time taken. 61-90 seconds: 0.1 91-120 seconds: 0.2 121 seconds and more: 0.3 Changes: 1 A change during the compulsory routine in Level 1 to 4 categories will be considered an interruption. The athlete will be judged only on the number of elements executed according to the compulsory routine established. 2 Changes are allowed in the voluntary routine in Level 1 to 4 categories. In Level 5 and higher categories, changes are allowed in the first and second voluntary routine in preliminary and final. Additional elements: Intermediate jump: DD counting element*: Time of flight (TOF): If the athlete completes more than 10 elements, the deduction will be 1.0 per execution judge and they will be judged on the first 10 elements only. No extra deduction for instability. If the athlete makes a straight jump in the middle of their routine, this jump will not be counted as an element and the routine will be interrupted. 1 During the first voluntary for Level 6 and higher categories, two elements will be counted for difficulty, their DD must be indicated on the difficulty card. Those elements can be combined with required elements (Level 6 and Junior). 2 The two DD counting elements** cannot be repeated in the second voluntary. In the case that there is a repetition, the difficulty will not count. For final, those two elements can be used. For Level 5 and higher categories, the time of flight (TOF) must be added as a bonus, it must be included in the score of each routine (preliminary and final). Repetition, non-dd element: If a Level 1 to 4 athlete repeats a non-dd element (tuck, pike, pike straddle jump), the deduction will be 0.2 per execution judge. * This rule applies to Senior category only at international competition. ** In the event that an athlete chooses his 2 nd element (double back tuck) as his DD counting element on his difficulty card, and if he changes the routine and performs a tuck barani as his 2 nd element during the competition, then it is the difficulty value of the tuck barani that will be awarded. 3

Trampoline Repetitions: 1 A repetition during the first voluntary routine of Level 5 and higher categories will result in a deduction of 1.0 per execution judge, for each repetition*. 2 A repetition during a voluntary routine results in the difficulty for that element not counting. * For Level 6 and higher categories, the two elements that are being counted for difficulty in the first voluntary routine cannot be repeated in the second voluntary routine, otherwise the difficulty for the element is not counted. These elements may be repeated in the final. Travelling on the bed: Deductions made by the execution judges (see page 21). Landing deductions will only apply on complete routines: Uncontrolled movements in the out bounce must also be judged as part of the instability. The penalty is not connected to the length of the step or the bounce, but to the amount. When stabilized, the gymnast can do a step to go back to the upright position without penalty. Landing deductions: 1* Not standing still in an upright position and not showing stability for 3 seconds: 0.1-0.2 Ex. : Uncontrolled movements in the out bounce 0.1 Uncontrolled arms or body movements while standing 0.1 1 step or bounce 0.1 2 steps or bounces 0.2 OR 2 Falling to or touching the bed with any part of the body except the feet: 0.5 3 Touching or stepping outside the trampoline bed: 0.5 4 Landing or falling outside the trampoline bed or area, or performing an additional somersault**: 1.0 5 Not performing the same landing in synchro***: 0.2 * If the athlete doesn t stop the bed completely after the stop bounce or turns immediately to the judges, he will get a 0.1 landing deduction. When the athlete takes a step (-0.1), he must bring back the same foot to stand upright to avoid additional penalty. ** Additional somersault: If a gymnast cannot stop/control the rebound of the bed after final landing and has to perform a somersault/whip or backhandspring. *** Instability taken by the synchro judge. Difficulty: 1/4 salto (90 ): 0.1 (1/2 twist must be 1/2 twist (180 ): 0.1 completed to count) Complete single somersaults (360 ): 0.5 Complete double somersaults (720 ): 1.0 Complete triple somersaults (1080 ): 1.6 Complete quadruple somersaults (1440 ): 2.2 Pike and straight positions, single somersaults without twist (360-630 ): 0.1 Pike and straight positions, multiple somersaults with or without twist (720 +), for each somersault: 0.1 (ex.: double somersaults 0.2, triple somersaults 0.3) Level 1 to 4 bonus*: Level 1 to 4 athletes will receive a bonus equal to the amount of DD performed in the routine, both for voluntary and final routine. * For specific requirements in each category, please refer to the Competition System document. 4

Tumbling For tumbling, the following rules apply: Specific warm-up: Usually, the athlete will have 1 or 2 warm-up passes (depending on the category) on the tumbling floor before competing. Warm-ups can differ depending on the event. If the athlete abuses warm-up, 0.3 will be deducted from the total score of their pass. This deduction will be only made from the first pass in preliminary and/or final depending on the case. Timing/start of a pass: 1 When the chair of the judges panel signals the athlete, they have 20 seconds to start their first element. If the athlete exceeds this limit, there will be a deduction of 0.1 per execution judge. 2 The first element must land on the tumbling track, even though it can be initiated on the run-up or with a springboard. The athlete who does not follow this rule will be given a score of 0.0. 3 A pass without a minimum of 3 elements will be scored 0.0. End of a pass: 1 If the athlete does not finish their pass with a salto (except Level 1), there will be a deduction of 1.0 per execution judge. 2 For Level 1, if the athlete does not end his pass with a somersault, he must do a straight jump. If he does not end his pass with a straight jump, a deduction of 1.0 will be made per execution judge. If the straight jump lands on one foot, maximum steps instability will be given, 0.3 per execution judge. If after landing on one foot, the athlete then puts a hand down or falls to his back, the biggest deduction will be taken, the 0.3 is not additionnal. 3 All passes ending with a somersault must initiate the somersault on the tumbling track and land it in the landing area. If it is not the case, a deduction of 0.2 will be made per execution judge*. 4 During the pass, if the athlete goes over the lines on the tumbling track, this will be an interruption. When an athlete lands on the landing area the pass is over. An element initiated on the landing area does not count, this will be an interruption. * This deduction is not part of the landing deductions, therefore additional. Non applicable for punch front. Changes: Additional elements: 1 A change during the compulsory pass in Level 1 to 4 categories will be considered an interruption. The athlete will be judged only on the number of elements executed according to the established compulsory pass. 2 Changes are allowed in a voluntary pass for Level 1 to 4 categories. For Level 5 and higher categories, changes are allowed for all passes in preliminary and final. If the athlete performs more than the number of elements of their category, 1.0 will be deducted by each execution judge and those additional elements will not be judged. No deduction for not finishing the pass with a salto or a straight jump and no landing deduction. 6

Tumbling Intermediate steps: Repetitions: Changing position: If the athlete takes steps or stops in the middle of their pass, this will be an interruption. They will be judged on the number of elements performed before the steps or the stop. 1 Round-offs, flic-flacs, and whips can be repeated as many times as the athlete desires. 2 During preliminary at any category, no salto can be repeated either within the same pass or between the two passes unless it is preceeded by a different element. If that happens, then the difficulty for the salto will not be counted. 3 The same rule applies for the categories that have two passes for final. However, for all categories it is possible to repeat the same elements or even the same pass from preliminary in final. No position change within an element is permitted. If it is the case, then the lowest position will be counted (1-tuck, 2-pike, 3-straight). 1 st voluntary (salto)*: No minimum saltos required. No element may contain more (Senior category) than 180 of twist each. Any violation will result in the difficulty of those elements not being counted. 2 nd voluntary (twisting)*: Two saltos of more than 180 of twist are required, if not, (Senior category) 1.0 for each missing requirement. If the pass ends with a non-twisting salto, the DD of that element will be 0 and a 1.0 for missing requirement. Final pass: Pass of 3 elements: Whip: Non inverted element: See specific requirements for each category in the Competition System document. Deduction of 1.0 per execution judge for any missing requirement. If no attempt is made to perform the 3 rd element in Level 4 and 5 categories, the score for the pass will be 0. If an attempt is made but called crash, the pass will be scored out of 9. Any backward, non-twisting, single somersault, executed at shoulder height or below, regardless of position, will be considered as a whip. Performing a non inverted element will interrupt the pass. this element will not be counted. Non inverted skills are only permitted in Level 1. * For specific requirements in each category, please refer to the Competition System document. 7

Tumbling Landing deductions will only apply on complete passes: The penalty is not connected to the length of the step or the bounce, but to the amount. When stabilized, the gymnast can do a step to go back to the upright position without penalty. Landing deductions: 1* Not standing still in an upright position and not showing stability for 3 seconds: 0.1-0.3 Ex. : Uncontrolled arms or body movements while standing 0.1 1 step or bounce 0.1 2 steps or bounces 0.2 3 steps or bounces 0.3 OR 2 After landing, touching the track or landing zone/area with one or both hands: 0.5 3 After landing, touching with or falling to the knees, hands & knees, front, back or seat on the track or landing area: 1.0 4 Assistance from a spotter after landing: 1.0 5 After landing in the landing area or on the track, leaving or touching outside the landing area or the track, or touching the floor with any part of the body: 1.0 Additional deductions: 6 Landing outside the outer lines of the track or the landing zone: 0.5 7 After landing, stepping out of the landing zone to the landing area or track: 0.1 Landing deductions (1 to 7) cannot exceed 1.0 8 Not landing the last element in the landing area: 0.2 * If the athlete turns immediately to the judges or stays in a squat position after landing, he will have a 0.1 landing deduction. If the athlete lands in a stance greater than shoulder width, he needs to bring his feet back together to stand upright, without penalty, if he stays like this, he will lose 0.1. When the athlete takes a step (-0.1), he must bring back the same foot to stand upright to avoid additional penalty. Level 1 to 4 bonuses*: 1 Level 1 to 4 athletes will receive a bonus of 0.3 for each whip performed during their voluntary pass in preliminary and final, with the exception of the 3 element pass in Level 4. 2 In Level 4, an additional bonus of 0.3 for whip-full is given in the 8 element voluntary passes. In the 3 element pass, double back tuck will receive a bonus of 1.0. 3 In Level 4, for the 8 element passes, the maximum bonus per pass is 1.5. For the 3 element pass, the maximum bonus is 1.0. * For specific requirements in each category, please refer to the Competition System document. Level 5 and higher bonuses: Please refer to the Competition System document. For all categories, the maximum bonus per pass is 1.0. 8

Double-mini Trampoline For double-mini trampoline, the following rules apply: Specific warm-up: Timing: The zones: Penalty zone: Bed contacts: Changes: Intermediate jumps: Repetitions: Scores: Non inverted element: Usually, the athlete will have 2 warm-up passes on the double-mini before preliminary and 2 passes before final. Warm-ups can differ depending on the event. If the athlete does more then 2 passes, 0.3 will be deducted from the total score of their pass. This deduction will be only made from the first pass in preliminary and/or final depending on the case. When the chair of the judges panel signals the athlete, they have 20 seconds to start their first element. If the athlete exceeds this limit, there will be a deduction of 0.1 per execution judge. The elements must be performed in the correct zones otherwise there will be an interruption. The mounting zone is the area in front of the spotter/dismount zone including the penalty zone. The spotter/dismount zone is the area behind the mounting zone including the penalty zone. 1 If the first element is initiated in the mount, it must land in the spotter/dismount and be followed by an element from the spotter/dismount to the landing area. 2 If the first element is initiated on the spotter/dismount, it must land in the spotter/dismount and be followed by an element from the spotter/dismount to the landing area. If the athlete touches or lands completely in the red central penalty zone of the double-mini, a deduction of 0.3 for each occurence will apply. However, it is permitted to touch the penalty zone during the take off of the mounting element or jump. The athlete must perform a minimum of two contacts with the bed and a maximum of 3 otherwise the pass will be interrupted. Changes to a pass are permitted with no deduction. If the athlete performs a straight jump on the spotter or the dismount the pass will be interrupted. The athlete cannot perform the same element in any of the 4 passes (2 in preliminary, 2 in final) unless that element is executed in a different zone. In the case of a repetition, the difficulty of the repeated element will not be counted. 1 A complete pass (2 elements) will be awarded a bonus of 8 points for a total of 10. 2 An incomplete pass (1 element) will be awarded a bonus of 6 points for a total of 7. Performing a non inverted element (under 360 salto rotation) in Level 5 and higher categories will interrupt the pass, this element will not be counted. 10

Double-mini Trampoline Repetition, non-dd element: If a Level 1 to 4 athlete repeats a non-dd element (tuck, pike, pike straddle jump), the deduction will be 0.2 per execution judge. Landing deductions will only apply on complete passes: The penalty is not connected to the length of the step or the bounce, but to the amount. When stabilized, the gymnast can do a step to go back to the upright position without penalty. Landing deductions: 1* Not standing still in an upright position and not showing stability for 3 seconds: 0.1-0.3 Ex. : Uncontrolled arms or body movements while standing 0.1 1 step or bounce 0.1 2 steps or bounces 0.2 3 steps or bounces 0.3 OR 2 After landing, touching the double-mini or the landing zone/area with one or both hands: 0.5 3 After landing, falling to the knees, hands & knees, front, back or seat on the landing zone/area: 1.0 4 Assistance from a spotter after landing: 1.0 5 After landing in the landing area, leaving or touching outside the landing area, touching the floor with any part of the body, or falling against the double-mini: 1.0 Additional deductions: 6 Landing inside zone B: 0.3 7 Landing inside zone C: 0.5 8** Stepping out from zone A to B/C or from zone B to C: 0.1 Landing deductions (1 to 8) cannot exceed 1.0 9 Touching the penalty zone (each time): 0.3 10 Touching anything other than the bed during the pass (each time): 0.1 * If the athlete turns immediately to the judges or stays in a squat position after landing, he will have a 0.1 landing deduction. If the athlete lands in a stance greater than shoulder width, he needs to bring his feet back together to stand upright, without penalty, if he stays like this, he will lose 0.1. When an athlete takes a step (-0.1), he must bring back the same foot to stand upright to have no additional penalty. ** No deduction for stepping back towards a safe area (from C to B/A or B to A). 0,7 m 2,5 m 1,0 m A B C 11

Repetitions Guidelines Overall if two elements have the same number of twists, to avoid being called for a repetition, the twists must be in different phase of the element and there must be an obvious pause between them. There will be most likely a repetition in a multiple salto with twist in a straight position as most of the time the twisting is global. Since it is harder in the straight position to make an obvious pause in the twisting, then we suggest that the athlete uses only one miller straight. 8 3 3 / 8 4 2 / 8 2 4 / should be considered the same element!!! Meaning that they cannot be repeated because it is nearly impossible to show a pause in order to differentiate them. It also means that a synchro pair, one can do 8 4 2 / and the other 8 2 4 / and this would be ok. In the pike and tuck position it is easier and usually important technically to have a pause in the twisting (half half out pike, full in half out tuck, etc.). It is critical that athletes doing a straight multiple twisting saltos will be able to show a good straight position. We know that most likely in a front element the take off will be slightly piked, so it is important that the athlete gets in the layout position ASAP so the element will not be called a pike and potentially would cause a repetition if a similar pike element was already planned in the routine (ref.: 8 2 3 / vs 8-5 <). We still look for the position during what usually is the middle phase of the element. At real speed we will probably not see the piking at the beginning of a straight twisting double as long as they hit the straight position before the kick out. Scoring System CANADA Individual trampoline, tumbling and double-mini trampoline: At National events in individual competition, the highest and lowest deductions per element of the 5 execution judges are deleted and the three remaining deductions are added together to give the total deduction for the element. The same principle applies for the additional deductions. Then all the total deductions per element and for the additional deductions are subtracted from the maximum mark to give the gymnast s execution score for a routine. FIG Individual trampoline, tumbling and double-mini trampoline: Wherever possible at FIG events, depending on hardware and software components, the median deduction of the 5 execution judges is taken as the deduction per element, then the sum of the median deductions (including median of additional deductions) is subtracted from the maximum mark and tripled to give the gymnast s execution score for a routine. Meaning... drop two high and two low deductions and keep the middle deduction. Synchronized trampoline: Wherever possible at FIG events, depending on hardware and software components, the median deduction of the 4 execution judges is taken as the deduction per element, then the sum of the median deductions (including median of additional deductions) is subtracted from the maximum mark and doubled to give the pair s execution score for a routine. Meaning... drop high and low deductions and use the average of the 2 remaining deductions. 13

Tie Breaking Rule CANADA Individual trampoline, tumbling and double-mini trampoline qualifying round: 1. The gymnast with the higher final score in the 2 nd routine or pass. 2. The total of the counting execution judges scores in the 2 nd routine or pass (higher execution score of the 2 nd routine or pass). 3. The total of all the execution judges scores (5) of the 2 nd routine or pass without eliminating the highest and the lowest score. 4. The total of the 4 highest execution judges scores of the 2 nd routine or pass. 5. The total of the 3 highest execution judges scores of the 2 nd routine or pass and so on. Synchronised trampoline qualifying round: 1. The pair with the higher final score in the 2 nd routine. 2. The pair with the higher synchronised score in the 2 nd routine. 3. The pair with the higher total of the synchronised scores from the 1 st and the 2 nd routine. Individual trampoline final round: 1. The total of the counting execution judges scores in the final routine (higher execution score of the final routine). 2. The total of all the execution judges scores (5) of the final routine without eliminating the highest and the lowest score. 3. The total of the 4 highest execution judges scores of the final routine. 4. The total of the 3 highest execution judges scores of the final routine and so on. Tumbling and double-mini trampoline final round: 1. The gymnast with the higher final score in the 2 nd final pass. 2. The total of the counting execution judges scores in the final pass (higher execution score of the 2 nd final pass). 3. The total of all the execution judges scores (5) of the 2 nd final pass without eliminating the highest and the lowest score. 4. The total of the 4 highest execution judges scores of the 2 nd final pass. 5. The total of the 3 highest execution judges scores of the 2 nd final pass and so on. Synchronised trampoline final round: 1. The pair with the higher synchronised score in the final. 2. The pair with the higher total score from the qualification round. FIG Individual trampoline qualifying round: 1. The gymnast with the higher final sum of the E-score of both routines. 2. The gymnast with the higher final sum of the T-score of both routines. If there is still a tie, the tie will not be broken. Synchronized trampoline qualifying round: 1. The gymnast with the higher final sum of the E-score of both routines. 2. The gymnast with the higher final sum of the S-score of both routines. If there is still a tie, the tie will not be broken. Tumbling and double-mini trampoline qualifying round: 1. The gymnast with the higher final sum of the E-score of both passes. 2. The gymnast with the higher E-score of the 2 nd pass. If there is still a tie, the tie will not be broken. Final in ALL disciplines (except at the Olympic Games) In case of a tie at any place, the tie will not be broken. 14
