KIMBALL HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL 2017 PLAYER / PARENT HANDBOOK

Welcome to Kimball High School Football This handbook contains information designed to help you prepare for your involvement with the KHS football program. Please understand that it is simply not possible to cover every situation, and with that in mind, we have designed this handbook as a reference to help guide you through the upcoming football season. We are very excited about the future of KHS football and the direction of our program. Please visit our website @ www.kimballfootball.net for additional information and program updates. Mission Statement To help further develop the culture of the student athlete at Kimball High School in a positive manner and firmly implant the ideals of commitment, effort, honesty, integrity and sportsmanship through football Core Values INTEGRITY- Know and do what is right regardless of who is watching RESPECT- Value the work and accomplishment of the team REPSPONSIBILTY- Assume ownership of your performance SPORTSMANSHIP- Bring your best to all competition LEADERSHIP- Raise expectations for yourself and the team

Attendance All players are expected to be present at practice. Practices are mandatory. Each and every practice includes a variation of a conditioning period, film, weight training, and playbook or play review with individual and team assignments. We can not adjust our practices based on an individual s attendance. 1. Any player that is late to practice will have discipline actions in order to make up for the time that they missed. 2. Any player that misses practice without notifying the head coach prior to the start of practice will be considered unexcused. 3. All players that miss practice for an illness or injury are required to provide a doctors note upon returning to practice. 4. All missed practices will require conditioning to be made up upon return. 5. Athletes must attend school in order to participate in practice or games. This includes dressing for P.E. 6. Players are strongly encouraged to attend the Doctor and or Dentist when it doesn t require them to miss practice when at all possible.

Program alignment Freshman/sophomore football Purpose: Emphasis: Teach players the rules of high school football and the strategies of KHS football. Prepare players both physically and mentally for varsity football. Winning games is not an emphasis. The biggest difference between each level is the players overall aggressiveness. Players and the lower levels play slower and often lack size, strength and overall ability. Weight room: Develop strength, agility, quickness and endurance through a structured lifting and conditioning program. Help players work to meet the physical requirements required to play at the varsity level. Varsity football Purpose: Emphasis: Weight room: Teach players advanced concepts of high school football and the strategies of KHS football. Win games by fielding the best team of players possible, who are both physically and mentally prepared to play football at the varsity level. Prepare potential college athletes for competition at the collegiate level. continue to improve strength, agility, quickness and endurance to physically dominate opponents.

Commitment MERRIAM-WEBSTER: 1. An agreement or pledge to do something 2. A promise to be loyal to someone or something The Valley OAK League is arguably one the toughest high school football leagues in Northern California, boasting two (2) Varsity State-Champion football teams in 2015 (Central Catholic, Division 2 and Sierra High School, Division 3). In order for us to compete on Friday night, we must have an understanding that ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY for both classes and KHS football related activities (meetings, practice, weight training and games). KHS football players are encouraged to participate in other sports and activities outside the football season; however, you must be committed to KIMBALL HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL and will not be excused to participate in other sports or activities that conflict with football. Be prepared to put scholastic work first and football second above all other social activities. Playing time It is critical that each player understand that they have a valuable role on their particular team and that constant participation over the course of the season is desirable, but never guaranteed. There are many more practices than there are actual games. Players learn and develop the necessary skills required to compete at practice, not on Friday night during the ten (10) game season. Varsity competition is the culmination of each sport program. Normally, juniors and seniors make up the majority of the varsity roster, but at times, we will move younger players, as needed, up that have demonstrated the ability to safely compete at the varsity level. Practicing at the appropriate level is invaluable for younger athletes to succeed. A sound attitude, an advanced level of commitment and effort are requirements for a position on a varsity team. Often, varsity sports require five to six days a week of commitment. This commitment is often extended into vacation periods for all sports seasons. Dedication and commitment are needed in order to conduct a successful varsity program and should be taken seriously.

Playing time continued The following list includes some of the criteria used in selecting starters and developing our depth charts. NOTE- The main focus of our freshman and sophomore football teams is to prepare players for varsity competition. Players that have the ability to safely move up are expected to do so accordingly. We are absolutely expecting players to practice and compete at the varsity level sooner rather than later to better them as athletes and the program as a whole. EXECUTION- The ability to consistently execute your assignment as you have been coached. CONTRIBUTION- Individuals that help to positively motivate teammates, are enthusiastic and always striving do their best. Players that accept coaching! TOUGHNESS- Guys that are mentally and physically tough and will continually show up and give their best without excuse. Guys that FINISH! Effort wins games! Find a way to win! KNOWLEDGE- Players that are dedicated and spend the required amount of time to learn and understand their assignments (includes watching film and offseason program). ABILITY- The players with the most talent, skill, or proficiency at their position.

Who am I? Do I show up in the off season? Am I the first one to practice? Am I missing practice? Do I consistently give 100% effort? Do I bring positive energy to practice? Am I coachable? Do I support my teammates without excuse? Do I watch film and study opponents? Can I beat the guy in front of me? The best football players, according to the criteria previously mentioned will generally start. Starters will be determined by overall performance. Punisher The Punisher award is a varsity award given to a varsity team member who simply outworks all of his teammates on and off the field during various timeframes throughout the lengthy season. This award has nothing to do with whether the player is a starter or a practice player. It is a highly sought after honor and a way for all of us to recognize individual effort and determination. He doesn t fight because he hates the man in front of him, he fights because he loves the men standing behind him - GKC Discipline Discipline is a very general and broad term, but when you break it down, discipline is simply doing what is expected of you. Discipline does not mean that we do what we should occasionally, but rather what we should on a CONSISTANT basis, and without having to be asked.

Player expectations To make an honest commitment to the KHS football program and understand that all practices are mandatory To be loyal and respectful on and off the field To be on time or to be early for all team functions To take responsibility for your academic success To participate in off-season workouts and conditioning To bring a positive and coachable attitude to all team functions To treat other as you expect to be treated To always put the success of the team first To act in an appropriate manner at all times (Do not do anything to disrespect the school or the football program) To prepare yourself mentally and physically To know your assignments To be a role model in the program and in the community Corrective actions to discipline infractions WHAT IF- I am late for practice- 100 yards of three (3) legged dogs I use profanity- 100 yards of three (3) legged dogs I am not coachable- Run a mile or get sent home I am disruptive (minor)- Run a mile or get sent home I am disruptive (major)- Run five (5) miles or team suspension I am absent (excused)- Sit first quarter I am absent (UNEXCUSED)- Sit first half of game or other I have an attendance issue- Dismissal I am disrespectful- Run five (5) miles or team suspension I am not eligible (grades)- Team suspension or dismissal I am ejected (game)- Team suspension or dismissal or other I am suspended (school)- 2X punishment or dismissal

NFHS Coaches Code of Ethics The function of a coach is to educate students through participation in interscholastic competition. An interscholastic program should be designed to enhance academic achievement and should never interfere with opportunities for academic success. Each student should be treated with the utmost respect, and his or her welfare should be considered in decisions by the coach at all times. Accordingly, the following guidelines for coaches have been adopted by the NFHS Board of Directors. The coach shall be aware that he or she has a tremendous influence, for either good or ill, on the education of the student and, thus, shall never place the value of winning above the value of instilling the highest ideals of character. The coach shall uphold the honor and dignity of the profession. In all personal contact with students, officials, athletic directors, school administrators, the state high school athletic association, the media, and the public, the coach shall strive to set an example of the highest ethical and moral conduct. The coach shall take an active role in the prevention of drug, alcohol and tobacco abuse. The coach shall avoid the use of alcohol and tobacco products when in contact with players. The coach shall promote the entire interscholastic program of the school and direct his or her program in harmony with the total school program. The coach shall master the contest rules and shall teach them to his or her team members. The coach shall not seek an advantage by circumvention of the spirit or letter of the rules. The coach shall exert his or her influence to enhance sportsmanship by spectators, both directly and by working closely with cheerleaders, pep club sponsors, booster clubs, and administrators. The coach shall respect and support contest officials. The coach shall not indulge in conduct which would incite players or spectators against the officials. Public criticism of officials or players is unethical. The coach should meet and exchange cordial greetings with the opposing coach to set the correct tone for the event before and after the contest. The coach shall not exert pressure on faculty members to give student special consideration. The coach shall not scout opponents by any means other than those adopted by the league and/or state high school athletic association.

KIMBALL HIGH SCHOOL PLAYER AGREEMENT I, understand that in order to participate in the football program at Kimball High School as a student athlete, I am expected to attend and participate in all classes (note: this includes dressing for P.E. on game days). I agree to complete all of my class assignments on time. I understand that I am expected to pass all of my classes and that I must maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average in order to remain eligible to participate in any sport. (note: Kimball High School has a zero F policy). I will treat all teachers, administrators, students, players and coaches with respect. I agree to represent Kimball High School and the football program on and off the field with the highest level of integrity at all times. (note: this includes time away from school). I understand that fighting, hazing, bullying and cutting class and or being disrespectful to others will not be tolerated as this is against our core values as a program. I understand that the use of illegal substances will not be tolerated (note: this includes but is NOT limited to alcohol, drugs, steroids and or tobacco). I understand that all FOOTBALL PRACTICES ARE MANDATORY and that I am expected to be on time and to participate with maximum effort. I agree to contact the Head Football Coach before the start of practice if I am too sick or injured to participate. (note: if you are well enough to go to school, you are expected to attend practice). I will come to football practices and games prepared and with the proper equipment. I will not remove any protective equipment without first informing a member of the coaching staff. By signing below, I acknowledge that I have read and understand the above agreement and that I will uphold the highest standards at all times. I also understand that disciplinary actions for violations to this agreement include suspension and possible removal from participation in the football program. Academic minimum standards All players are expected to attend all of their classes and complete all of their assignments as required. Players must maintain a minimum grade point average of at least a 2.0 GPA. The Tracy School District also has a no F policy. This means that regardless of whether a player has a 2.0 GPA or not, he can not participate in any sports program with an F. Players that are struggling to maintain a minimum of a 2.5 GPA during the football season will be required to attend mandatory study hall. All players will provide their coaches with a progress report or an Aires printout on a weekly basis. Players that have not met the minimum academic requirements at the end of the school year will not be allowed to participate in summer practices and or the regular season. We are no longer accepting players that require the use of summer school in order to become eligible, off season support is available to support the athlete if needed through the program or the school. Off season All players will be required to participate in the off season weight lifting, team meetings, team functions and conditioning practices unless they are participating in another sport at Kimball High School. The main purpose of this strength and conditioning training is to prevent injury, build confidence and start the process of us building a TEAM. Players are also expected to participate in a weight lifting class when available at KHS. Our football team and it s success are built December through July, not August through November. Championships are built in the off-season Outside trainers Many of our athletes are lifting on their own and or using trainers outside of our regular football program, and are encouraged to do so. If you need help finding an outside trainer please see one of your coaches for a referral. KEEP IN MIND that any training done outside of our football program is considered supplemental and does not excuse a player from the schedule team workouts.

Locker room Players are not permitted in the locker room area without the direct supervision of a certified coach. Because we are continually building toward being recognized as the top football program in the state, players are expected to keep the locker room, weight room and all other KHS facilities clean and free of personal belongings or debris. Equipment Each player is 100% responsible for the care of their issued protective equipment and uniforms. Jerseys should be washed in cold water and hung to dry. The average cost of outfitting each player with the necessary protective equipment is in the neighborhood of $700 per athlete. Players will wear all of their protective equipment when practicing. There will be no exceptions. Each player is also financially responsible for all of their issued equipment. Players will be charged for any equipment not returned in a timely manner. Equipment is not to be left at home. Helmets We are currently using the Schutt Vengeance series of helmets at Kimball. The Schutt Vengeance helmet carries one of the highest ratings available at date of purchase (Virginia Tech Helmet Ratings). Our helmets are gloss metallic white in color with a "Seattle blue face mask. For 2017, and going forward, all helmets in the program will be the white metallic color with the blue face mask. NOTE: NO HELMET CAN PREVENT ALL INJURIES. Workout attire / uniforms As part of a team sport, players must learn to support their teammates in a selfless manner. In creating a TEAM, we must also understand that is necessary to give up some individual freedoms in order to further promote family and unity. Players are expected to wear their white Kimball Football workout shorts and blue Kimball workout shirts for all team workouts. The spirit pack and other workout clothing are available for purchase several times throughout the year. Individual uniform items (sleeves, socks, cleats etc. may NOT authorized). Again, we are trying to create a team and not promote individuality.

Injuries/illness All injuries (no matter how minor) are to be reported to the players head coach. Players will be required to provide a Doctors note before being released back to practice with injuries requiring medical attention. Additionally, please make sure to notify the head coach with any existing medical conditions prior to the start of any physical activity. If injured, you will be expected to exercise the parts of your body that are not injured at practice, and to still attend practice as part of the team. Closed practices All practices for the safety of our players, students, coaches and administrators are to be considered closed to the general public. Fundraising Fundraising is an essential part of our football program. Please understand that we need 100% participation from players and parents with all of our fundraising efforts in order to get through a single season. Each year, we spend a considerable amount of money replacing worn equipment and providing uniforms, socks, team bags, tape, braces, mouthpieces, etc to our players. This money is also used to help fund the banquet, provide senior player awards, cover the costs of our video equipment and software as well as paying for our passing leagues and scheduled scrimmages as needed. Fundraising is a team function! If you have an idea or would like to help with our fundraising efforts, please contact the head coach. Programax Programax is a web based program that we use to communicate with players on a daily basis. This app allows us to get program related information out to the players and parents in a timely manner. Typically the players get a text message each day that updates them on practice times, program updates or other information designed to properly keep them informed. Please contact the head coach with any questions related to programax.

Communication There are several avenues available for team communication. We are continually trying to improve the way that we communicate with our team members and families. Currently we have most of our program information available at kimballfootball.net and or available via instagram. We will make every effort to keep our players and parents up to date on football program issues and events. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the head coach or representative through email and or cell phone (listed at kimballfootball.net). We do ask that you do not disrupt practice and kindly wait until Saturday following a scheduled game to discuss concerns that do not require an immediate resolution. Social media Social media is growing at an incredible rate, and we ask that as a program, everyone will use it in a positive manner. Kimball High School Football social media channels should NOT be used as an area to address concerns, complaints or debates. Commentary or opinion that is counterproductive will not be tolerated. Please be respectful and do not attack, berate, diminish success or highlight failures. Please positively represent our program and our teams at all times. Team meals Pre-game meals are a privilege at Kimball High School. We expect players to act in an appropriate manner while in attendance and to understand that anything that takes away from the TEAM focus will not be tolerated. Players are expected to be on time. Please remember that parents and supporters that help provide the team meal are not in attendance to clean up after the event. Show appreciation, act polite and clean up after yourself. Thank the supporters prior to leaving.

Nutrition A detailed nutrition guide is available at kimballfootball.net (links- Humboldt State Nutrition Guide at kimballfootball.net). In general, stay away from soda, fast food, fatty foods and sweets. Pasta, breads, meat, fruits and vegetables are preferred. On game days, do not consume soda and candy. Leadership council In 2016, we implemented a leadership council at the varsity level. Just like in the professional business world and at the collegiate level, the council helps us put the student-athlete at the forefront of many of the decisions that affect the football program. Their feedback is truly valued and it gives select players a chance to lead by example and help shape the overall culture. This investment made between coaches and players helps create a greater trust and accountability on both ends. Through the leadership council, the head coach of each team will meet with the most committed players (usually 6-7) to determine how player interactions, uniform selection, disciplinary and other similar issues will be handled. Each team in 2017 will have their own leadership council or coaches and team members representing each team going forward. Physical and health insurance (8to18) All players are required to have a current physical on file with Kimball High School (typically required no later than May of each year for football). All players are required to have health insurance. 8to18 is a web based program that we use at Kimball High to store emergency contact information as well as a players clearance status. Please make sure that your player is registered with 8to18 (links- 8to18 at kimballfootball.net)

Cut policy We are committed to not cutting players at Kimball High School based on their physical ability unless it becomes safety concern. With that in mind, as coaches, we will release players that fail to understand the concept of TEAM. This includes but is not limited to items such as behavior, attendance, grades, attitude, coachability and commitment. Players that make a team are never guaranteed playing time during scheduled competition, although playing time at the sophomore and freshman levels should always be a consideration for program development. Drugs and alcohol The use of drugs, alcohol and or tobacco products will not be tolerated. The possession or use of alcohol and drugs during school and or sporting events will result in the immediate dismissal from the football program.

Concussion A concussion is a brain injury and should be treated seriously no matter how mild. Concussions are caused by a bump, jolt, or blow to the head or body. The force of contact transmitted to the head causes the brain to bounce around or twist within the skull resulting in the stretching and tearing of brain cells. This damage to the brain cells creates changes in the function of the brain. Concussions are not brain bruises but rather a disruption of how the brain normally works. Even though most concussions are mild, all concussions are potentially serious and may result in complications including prolonged brain damage and death if not recognized and managed properly. In other words, even a ding or a bump on the head can be serious. Concussions cannot be seen and most occur without loss of consciousness. Signs and symptoms of a concussion may appear immediately after the injury or can take hours or days to fully appear. If your student-athlete reports any symptoms of a concussion, or if you notice the symptoms or signs of a concussion yourself, seek medical attention right away. Student-athletes displaying any signs and symptoms of a concussion should be removed from play immediately. When In Doubt, Pull Them Out. A student-athlete with a concussion is now at greater risk to experience a second concussion if the brain is not given time to properly heal. A repeat concussion that occurs before the brain recovers fully, can slow recovery or increase the probability of having long-term problems. In rare cases, repeat concussions can result in brain swelling (edema), permanent brain damage, and even death. A full info packet is available on the Kimball Football website under links and forms. http://www.kimballfootball.net/links.html
