Colors: Blue and White Conference: Colonial Athletic Association Head Coach: Bob Heck Record at Georgia State: 657-558-2 CAA Preview Georgia State has earned the second seed in the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Championships, which will take place Wednesday through Friday at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. The Panthers open the four-team tournament against third-seeded Towson on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Georgia State won 16 of its final 20 regular-season games to enter the CAA Championships with a record of 29-18, 15-5 in the CAA. The Panthers took two out of three from Towson (32-20, 13-8) during the regular season and lead the series, 8-5. Host Hofstra (26-19, 14-3) has won 11 straight conference titles, including seven straight CAA championships since joining the league in 2002. The Pride face fourth-seeded James Madison (32-14, 12-8) Wednesday at 12 noon. The CAA Championship continues through Friday, with the champion earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Georgia State, coached by Bob Heck, enters the tournament as the CAA s top hitting team with a.286 batting average, led by sophomore catcher Catherine Lee (.338, 5 HR, 26 RBI) and junior third baseman Danielle Roddy (.333, 1 HR, 19 RBI). Five Panthers have 20 or more runs batted in. Lee, the 2008 CAA Player of the Year, is one of the league s top offensive threats with 22 career homers (fourth in Georgia State history). With 27 walks, she leads the CAA in on-base percentage at.454, just ahead of Roddy (.446), the Panther leadoff hitter with 28 walks this season and a school-record 103 in her career. Other top hitters for the Panthers include junior

Panther Notes shortstop Rachel Cunningham, batting.296 with a teamleading 30 RBI, sophomore first baseman Lauren Jones, with five homers and 25 RBI, and senior outfielder Natasha Berry, with a.290 average, 24 RBI and a team-leading 13 stolen bases. Senior outfielder Holly Willis leads the CAA with 26 sacrifice hits. On the mound, the Panthers feature senior right-hander Madi Gore with a 13-9 record, a 3.01 earned run average and 86 strikeouts, and freshman righty Alana Thomas, 12-6, 2.78 ERA. Caa teams in top rpi Three CAA softball squads are ranked in the top 100 of the NCAA RPI through games of April 28. Hofstra leads the pack at 50, while Georgia State (69) and James Madison (72) follow. Towson is just above the 100 mark at 107. Series Vs.Towson The Panthers traveled to Towson over the weekend of April 25th and came away with a 2-3 record. State took games one and two, 3-0 and 6-2 respectively, before falling 1-2 to Towson in the final game on Sunday. Junior Danielle Roddy led the Panthers in both games, batting a perfect three-for-three in game one and three-forfive in game two. Roddy also knocked in a single RBI and crossed the plate three times for the Panthers. Sophomore Rebecca Roles brought in two RBI while catcher Catherine Lee brought in the final run in game one. Six different Panthers scored the six State runs in game two. Senior hurler Madi Gore pitched the complete game one, improving her record to 11-8. Gore faced 24 batters, striking out seven and walking two. Freshman Alana Thomas took the win for game two, facing 25 batters, striking out and walking three. Thomas s record improved to 11-6. On day two, junior Danielle Roddy and sophomore Catherine Lee led the Panthers, each recording two hits. Roddy batted two-for-four, while Lee was two-for-three. Senior hurler Madi Gore pitched the first five innings and took the loss, bringing her record to 11-9. Gore faced 23 batters, walking two and striking out four. Freshman Alana Thomas was put in in relief and finished out the game, allowing no hits. Roddy nabs consecutive Player of the Week Georgia State junior Danielle Roddy received CAA Softball Player of the Week honors for the second straight week after helping the Panthers clinch the No. 2 seed in the upcoming CAA Softball Championship with a sweep of UNC Wilmington last weekend in conference play. The junior finished the week batting.454 (5-for-11) with four runs scored, a double and three RBI. Roddy was walked once to raise her career walk school record to 103. She opened the weekend with a 2-for-3 appearance in Game 1 before wrapping up the series with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate. Roddy was named the CAA softball Player of the Week last week for the first time in her career. Roddy collected CAA Softball Player of the Week honors after batting.667 (8-for-12) to lead the Panthers on the week. She became the leader in Georgia State all-time history with 102 career walks. Roddy posted a double, a RBI and three runs scored on the week and opened the series against Towson going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. two Consecutive CAA Players of the Week Junior Rachel Cunningham was named CAA Player of the Week for the Week of April 6th while senior Natasha Berry was named the CAA Player of the Week for the week prior (March 30th). Shortsop Cunningham earned CAA Softball Player of the Week honors after leading the Panthers to 5-0 record on the week with sweeps of Furman and George Mason. The infielder from Cumming, Ga. blasted a pair of three-run homers and drove in nine runs. She hit.500 (8-for-16) in five starts. In the second game against the Patriots, Cunningham hit the game-ending three-run homer. Berry started her week in a very big way when she knocked a grand slam out of the park in game one against conference foe Delaware. She ended that game going 2-for- 3 with four RBI. Berry continued swinging the bat into the doubleheader and batted.500 and crossed the plate twice. In the series against James Madison, Berry hit a perfect 1.000 in game one and led the Panthers going 7-for-11 on the weekend and recording 6 RBI, one triple, and one double, and four stolen bases. Berry s total stolen bases reaches 11 on the season. talented newcomer Georgia State s 2009 squad features one of the the most talented newcomers in school history, headlined by last year s Georgia AAA Co-Player of the Year, Northeast Georgia Player of the year, and 2006 s Pitcher of the Year Alana Thomas of Athens, Ga. and Oconee County High School. As a freshman this season, she is holding a 12-6 record and an 2.78 ERA. Thomas has recorded four shut out wins so far this season. Most recently, Thomas registered two shutouts in one weekend against George Mason. In game two on Saturday, Thomas allowed only a single hit and led the Panthers to a 9-0 win. The second shutout of the weekend occured on Sunday when the Patriots only managed four hits in the 3-0 Panther win. Infield Shines, Ranks in caa Leading the Panthers in RBI with 30 is junior short stop Rachel Cunningham. Cunningham ranks third in the conference in RBI and fourth with 101 assists this season. Coming in with 25 RBI is sophomore Lauren Jones. Jones has hit five doubles, one triple, five home runs, and has crossed the plate 17 times. Catcher Catherine Lee leads the Panthers with a.338` batting average and is tied with Jones for a team-high five home runs a piece. First baseman Jones hit two home runs during the final week of March. The first game in game one against Kennesaw that saw the Panthers shut out the Owls 6-0. Home run number two of the week came against Hofstra in the final game of the weekend. The homer served as the Panthers only run in the 6-1 loss to the Pride.
