SPORT NEWSLETTER ISSUE 112: 21 March to 27 March 2018 FOR UPDATED SPORTING INFORMATION - http://www.slc.qld.edu.au/co-curriculum/sport/ DIRECTOR OF SPORT REPORT SPORT CONTACTS Telephone (07) 3010 1120 Sport Wet Weather Line (07) 3010 1170 Email sports@slc.qld.edu.au Twitter @lauriessport TABLE OF CONTENTS Director of Sport Report 1 Excellence Program 2 Chess 3 Calendar 4 AFL Primary 6 Cricket 7 Volleyball 10 Rugby 14 Football 17 Strength & Conditioning 19 Representative School Sport 19 Support Your School 20 Last weekend saw the conclusion to the Term 1 competition sports of Cricket, Volleyball and Primary AFL. The season concluded with a huge day of games against Iona. It was very pleasing to witness and receive positive feedback from a large amount of members from both the Lauries and Iona communities about the conduct of our SLC sportsman and spectators on the weekend. Our competitive results from Term 1 are pleasing and definitely lay a foundation for improvement in the future. While not officially a premiership competition, our primary AFL teams clearly showed the strength of AFL talent we have in the College. Both our Volleyball and Cricket Programs finished 3 rd in the aggregate. A top three finish in a competitive environment like AIC sport is a great effort. The cricket result can be clearly seen to be influenced by the weather. Having the best part of three full rounds of fixtures washed out, against opposition schools that historically we had the potential to achieve strong results, did not assist. Likewise, for the College to come through a period of time without an onsite training facility for volleyball (two years) and now begin to utilise a world class school facility in the new sports centre, the future is very bright. What was more pleasing than results were the continued opportunities that existed for boys to participate in Term 1. The Year 7 and 8 Colours cup volleyball competition and the numerous cricket teams, beyond the aggregate competition, the College sports program caters for are great positives and important to the College. The College taking an active role in the facilitation of the supplementary draw creation for all sports allows a greater number of boys to participate and enjoy their sports involvement. Thank you to all boys for their participation and commitment during Term 1 sport. Our boy s ability to play the game in right spirit and conduct themselves appropriately is by far more important than results. This is a strength of Laurie s Sportsmen. A huge thank you must go to the Directors of each sport John Roberts (cricket), Domnic Aguiar (volleyball) and the primary Coordinator of AFL Danny O Toole. The directors do countless hours of extra work to coordinate the involvement of the numerous SLC teams in each sport. They enthusiastically take a keen interest in every team in their programs and their commitment to their sports goes far beyond the 7 rounds of the AIC season. ST LAURENCE S COLLEGE 1

Thank-you to all the coaches involved in Term 1 Sport. SLC is very lucky to have the largest staff involvement in the co-curricular sports programs in the AIC. This is wonderful for the positive relationships that are needed in a College community. Thank-you to the numerous old boy coaches and the parents who assisted with coaching for different teams. Having Old Boy coaches come back and be involved in our sports program is wonderful. Thank-you to all of the parents for your positive involvements. Thank you to Matt Bell and the cricket support group and Michelle Prendergast and the Volleyball Support Group. Thank you to all the parents who have scored, umpired, cooked on a BBQ or worked at a canteen. A special thank-you to Trish Josefski for the endless hours she has spent over the summer in the Runcorn canteen. Finally, a huge thank-you to the sports department staff who have facilitated the Term1 Sports program and to our facilities staff. Thank-you to Jennifer Plate (Sports Admin Manager) and Corey Balharry (Sports Admin Assistance) - without their hard work each and every week the sports department would not be able to function and our boys would definitely not have the opportunities they have. Special thanks to our Runcorn ground staff Dave and Andrew. Their work preparing fields and wickets each week has been incredible- sometimes in some very difficult conditions. Congratulations to everyone on Term 1 Sport! Term 2 Sport officially began this week with the commencement of rugby and football trials. This weekend we will play trial games against Villanova and some internal trials to continue the trial process. Placing boys in teams for this weekend s trial fixtures is a very difficult task based on the limited feedback from a couple of trials. It is hoped that through participation in actual trial games students can further show their skills and teamwork and this will assist with team placement. I ask that boys (and families) wait until the end of the trial period to seek feedback regarding the team they are playing in and the opportunities for movement throughout the season. It has been particularly impressive to see the standard of skills on display during the trials I have attended this week. There are numerous new students to the College in each year level, obviously highlighted in Year 7 where the cohort size has doubled in one year. It is great to see new students to the College displaying their skills on the football and rugby fields and their involvement will only strengthen our community. AFL PRIMARY The 2018 Primary AFL season was hugely successful. We had 2 teams competing in each age group against fellow AIC schools Iona, Ashgrove, Villanova and Padua. Each week the wins just seemed to be racking up us we marched through the regular season. With expert coaching provided by AFLQ on a Tuesday, the boys over the course of the season developed their skills and game sense immensely. On Saturdays, during matches, they were then able to transfer what they have been working on at training and the boys showed they were quick learners and have tremendous potential in this game. For many of our Year 5 s this was their first taste of AFL and it was easy for all to see how quickly they fell in love with the contest and the challenge of this new game. After playing each of the schools, three of our squads finished in the top two. To conclude the season, AFLQ matched up teams of a similar standard based on an informal ladder. Not to miss the opportunity to develop the competitive nature of our SLC boys, these matches quickly became grand finals that weren t technically grand finals, we were playing for premierships that weren t technically premierships and were wanting to win the trophy that wasn t really a trophy. Our 5A s and 6A s relished the challenge and proved their dominance during the season, as well as a great ability to handle the occasion of the big dance, as they won very comfortably. A special mention must go to our 6A s who went through the season undefeated, which is a fantastic achievement. Our 5B s lost their GF to a very strong Padua team. However, they showed great improvement compared to their previous match against these rivals. Our 6B s won their final match to finish 3rd and showed in their final game that they are able to perform against any opponent when they work well as a team. Last week we had a team, who was comprised of mainly Year 6 s and some Year 5 s, compete in the AFLQS Cup Brisbane South Primary Gala Day. During an extremely hot day, the boys played 7 x 20 min matches with very limited breaks in between. Given the challenging and gruelling conditions, the boys again performed extremely well, unfortunately falling at the final hurdle in the final to Algester State School. This was a fantastic opportunity for the boys to test themselves against quality opposition. I would like to thank our old boy coaches for helping out with coaching and lending their expertise to our program, including teaching me the actual rules of the game as I naively moulded my game plan on a hybrid soccer/basketball/volleyball approach. Mr Wallace is a big supporter of AFL in our school, so I thank him for providing these opportunities to our boys. Finally, I would like to thank the wonderful AFL parents who showed great support and made for a fantastic and friendly atmosphere each week. CRICKET It has been a rain interrupted season for all the cricket teams which has made for an unrealistic points table. Eg. the 9A team didn t lose a game all season and finished third on the ladder because they didn t get to play as many games as their opposition. We fielded 21 secondary teams this season and 11 primary teams. The secondary teams had our best season on record and would have gone close to winning the aggregate if it wasn t for the rain effected washouts which saw us share the points with schools that we could have possibly beaten. Primary cricket this season saw one of the highest participation rates of cricket in the school in years. The interest and passion amongst all boys saw teams take to the field each week with commitment and pride in wearing the black and gold. The primary school focus this year was on learning the game and playing as a team. The boys proved that playing the Laurie s way and focussing on the intricacies of the game were valuable to the games each week. The primary boys experienced lots of successful individual results including Thomas Ahern who scored 5 fours off 5 balls in the final over of an innings, Zac Reader who top scored with 48 and Tyler Rukavina s classic catches throughout the season, fielding in gully. But, aside from any individual success, it was the team performances that shone for the primary teams. Boys would worry about the team, rather than the individual, and the boys would ensure the games were played in the correct spirit rather than the outcome of the game. The development of all primary teams has led to many successful outcomes this season. The primary school has a group of boys who have advanced their own game and are ready to take the success of Laurie s cricket further as they continue into high school. I would like to thank a number of people who have been associated with the cricket season. These include - Mr Eddie Wallace, the heartbeat of sport at Lauries, who goes above and beyond his role as Head of Sport to make sure that all teams have games each week and Ms Jenny Plate for all of her admin work. - to the age group coordinators and coaches, each year you amaze me with your dedication, guidance, role modelling and passion for coaching the boys, thank you. - To Nathan Josefski and the First XI team, congratulations on your season that has unfortunately been affected by the three games that have been lost due to poor weather conditions. Throughout the season there have been some great team performances and none better than their last two games against Marist College and Iona College. Marist, who won the competition, won the toss and were sent into bat. The Lauries team bowled and fielded superbly and after 48 overs had Marist all out for 105 runs. We went into bat and chased down the meagre total in under 40 overs to win comprehensively against the top side. Last weekend saw the Firsts play their last game for the college against Iona College. Iona batted first and scored a big total of 210 runs. Lauries chased this total down comfortably with the loss of only three wickets. These last two games saw the Lauries First team smash the two top teams in the competition, and it is disheartening to not have had the opportunity to play the other three games. - congratulations to Mr Wigan on his tireless efforts both on and off the field with the team and grooming them for such a good but luckless season. I would like to acknowledge all of the school s cricketers personally, for the way that you have conducted yourselves on and off the field this season. Whether you are in an A team or a colours team, it s very important to the school that the game is played in the right spirit, and you have all shown these characteristics this season. VOLLEYBALL Congratulations to everyone involved in our volleyball season this year. A challenging year of volleyball and a journey of improvement to be proud of. Our final round against Iona was definitely tough. We finished the day behind on aggregate with only 3 wins and 9 losses. Our total for the day was only 5 wins and 19 losses but we take plenty of learning from the day and know we need to be much more mentally tougher next year. In following the overall aggregate school race, it was an extremely close contest between all schools. We didn t achieve our goal of champion school this year but did enough to finish a respectable 3 rd place. The future of our program still looks bright and we will endeavour to come back stronger next year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the coaches, parents and of course the players for their efforts in supporting Volleyball this year, our progress is a product of the hard work you put into the development of your skills and your team cohesion. There are plenty of stories across all age groups and I have asked age group coordinators and some coaches to provide a brief season summary for us. Year 7 Volleyball For most of the boys, the 2018 Year 7 Volleyball season was their first time playing the sport. Over the season, players developed their knowledge of fundamental volleyball skills, focusing on: serving, passing and transitions. Most importantly, they grew as individuals and as a team; understanding the importance of communication, mental preparation and sportsmanship. The 7A s finished the season with 4 wins and 3 losses, securing 3rd place, both the 7B s and 7C s completed the season with 3 wins and 4 losses finishing 3 rd and 4 th respectively and the 7D s ended the season with 5 wins and 2 losses. Sam Cairncross (student - 7B s) reviewed the season as, Fun and exciting. We learnt the proper basic skills of volleyball from our experienced coaches, who helped each of us develop and grow as individual players and as a team mate. All in all, a very successful season that certainly laid the foundations for a promising 2019 season. (Ms Zofia Piperides Age Group Coordinator) Year 8 Volleyball The 8A s comprised of a team of skilled and keen players, however, early on in the season it was evident that their mental strength was of concern. Constant work by the boys to support each other and trust in their team mates led to an extremely positive finish to the season. The team worked effectively together during their last match as they came from a set behind to dominate the opposition and displayed the true depth of their talent both in their respective positions and in the school spirit they were searching for early on. Finishing the season with 3 solid wins in a row secured 3 rd position that was very deserving of this hard-working team. I look forward to what their future holds as they continue to develop their skills and apply it with the high level of school spirit which they have developed. (Mr Matt Wilson 8A Coach) 8D - The standard of Volleyball in the 30 years I have been teaching at St Laurence s has risen immensely. A D team today could easily be an A team years ago or even at some schools today. Many of the boys understand the three basic skills of dig, set, spike. Even the overhead serve is standard fare these days. While some AIC schools did not have a D team this year, we came up against two GPS colleges on three occasions and were very strong against this opposition, taking sets and narrowly losing. We defeated every AIC school except Padua, a game we could have easily won. Unlike other schools, we give as many boys as possible the opportunity to play. So it was this year, with 12 boys, enough to present two squads. It was difficult to substitute players and may have, on occasion, worked against us. However, all 12 boys improved their skills throughout the season and could have easily been promoted to more senior teams. I thank them all for a very easy and enjoyable season and wish them well next year. (Mr Shane Appleton 8D Coach) The 8C s were our most successful team, winning all games except for the last one and finishing in 2 nd place. The boys played with energy and enthusiasm throughout the season and showed us all a bit of that fighting spirit in the way they went about their business. Well done on a great season. The 8B s improved a lot throughout their season and were implementing more complex positioning and tactical play as the season went on. The learning curve continued strongly for them and hopefully this will equate to more positive results for them next year. (Mrs Kristie Carroll Age Group Coordinator) ST LAURENCE S COLLEGE 10

Year 9 Volleyball From a very promising start our Year 9 teams looked to be a formidable force to be reckoned with in AIC volleyball. Unfortunately, due to some injuries, changes in structures and I guess just losing their way a bit, we did not necessarily finish where we wanted on the results table. We know that the boys are very capable and this year s disappointment will only add more fuel to the fire and desire to come back stronger next season. The 9A team stumbled in round 4 but had the opportunity at the final hurdle to secure a premiership. They were not successful in that endeavor this year but have already started planning their revenge for next season. The 9B team started the season with two good wins but seemed to lose focus and ability to finish out games in the latter half of the season. The 9C team were on track for a premiership also until the final hurdle and unfortunately fell short of this achievement finishing third. The 9D team played some wonderful volleyball throughout the year and enjoyed some entertaining games with opposition teams. (Mr Tim Smith 9B Coach and Age Group Coordinator) Year 10 Volleyball Year 10 Volleyball at Lauries is in great shape and is so across AIC as evidenced by many hard fought matches. Record numbers trialed for Year 10 teams this season and the depth and competition for places meant players often moved up teams across the season. Although falling short of premiership ambitions in each division, all players represented their school well and with pride. 10B were the standout team in the division for Lauries, losing just the one game all season and finishing in second place. All of the other Year 10 teams started the season very well, each going on winning runs. However, lack of consistency and finishing led to some late-game fadeouts, with many winnable games lost. All boys will be better for the experience next year, learning to keep fighting and playing till the final whistle. Next year, boys are encouraged to continue to work on the basic skills of the game and play smarter in games by incorporating more strategy into their games. We thank all coaches for their time and effort this year. (Mr Luke Spargo 10D Coach and Age Group Coordinator) Year 11 Volleyball Year 11 Volleyball in 2018 saw boys develop their volleyball skills immensely. From the A s winning the majority of their games with great teamwork, the B s uniting as a team like no other, the C s having the most fun and the D s being the most accommodating and patient bunch of senior students. We fought hard for our wins and used our losses as motivation to train and work harder. Our season found students who had never played or seen a game of volleyball develop spikes like champions or be able to get under any ball anywhere on the court. The time, energy and commitment of all year 11 players did Lauries proud and we can t wait to see what the boys can do next year! Special congratulations go to our 11B team who not only finished the season securing a premiership but managed to go through all 7 rounds without dropping a single set, a great achievement. Thank you to all the coaches and parents who also supported and committed their time to these teams. (Mrs Tiffany Pritchard 11D Coach and Age Group Coordinator) Opens Volleyball 1sts: The Firsts had an outstanding season. Throughout each of the rounds, the boys displayed great teamwork and focus, marching through to the final round undefeated. In the final match, against the also undefeated Iona team, the boys showed grit and class, as they pushed until the end against Iona, who took out their first ever volleyball 1 st XI AIC victory. The passion, pride and determination that the SLC Firsts showed throughout the season was a great example to all who follow as to how to approach team sports, working not just for themselves individually, but for everyone in the team. (Mr Levi Dugger 1sts Coach) 2nds: The seconds captain William Shepley was outstanding as a leader, his consistency, positive impact and leadership was the reason why I chose him as captain. The 2nds were a very talented bunch of boys, the quality of volleyball the 2nds played is undefeated premiers worthy, however we were very unlucky to not win our first 2 games (lost both by 2 points). Though once everyone got comfortable and we started to understand how to play smarter, more efficiently and effectively we were a force to be reckoned with. I m very proud of the boys and how their mentality during games changed, focusing on the points ahead instead of dwelling and being frustrated with the ones they lost. Couldn t have asked for a better bunch of boys to coach as it was not only an honour to coach the seconds but those specific boys as well. (Ghoson Alexander 2nds Coach) ST LAURENCE S COLLEGE 11

3rds: The Thirds worked very hard throughout the season. The boys worked very hard each week and had a number of close games, including in the final round against Iona, who had only lost one set to that point. The team worked cohesively and gave their best in each point to push Iona to the brink. Overall, the attitudes, commitment and effort of each member of the Thirds is to be commended. (Mr Paul Moscos 3rds Coach and Age Group Coordinator) 4ths: Throughout the season, the Fourths approached each game with enthusiasm and worked cohesively as a team. In doing so, they finished-up with 5 wins to 2 losses. Overall, it was a fun season, with the boys working effectively together to increase their volleyball skills. Their positive attitudes and willingness to work with each other and the coach (even in helping to work out a weekly playing roster) made for a very rewarding experience for all. (Mrs Melissa Smith 4ths Coach) Having put so much time and effort into this season to see our skills improve and to witness both mental toughness and mental fragility in the close games, it is with a heavy heart that we say goodbye to the 2018 season. Our determination to succeed in all aspects will be the driving force behind our preparation into season 2019 and we look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. Of course there will be some other opportunities for players to stay involved in the game throughout the year so please look out for these opportunities and put your names forward when available. We wish those boys who are playing at a representative level all the very best for their upcoming tournaments. If you are able to, try to get some touches on the ball so that your skills can be maintained into the next season. At the very least remember the lessons that you have learnt this season and bring forth a renewed energy to the program next year. As an extra development pathway during our school off season some players may be interested in the following: The emerging talent squad is a new initiative of the QAS Volleyball program in 2018 that will develop grassroots volleyball players (targeting 15 years and younger) and will teach fundamental movement skills as well as volleyball specific techniques. If you want some more information about this program, please get in touch with Mr Aguiar who can point you in the right direction. Good luck with other sports that you are involved in this year and I look forward to working with you again next season. To finish, take a moment to think about the qualities that coaches look for in their athletes and what it really takes to be a successful athlete. STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Here is a link to one of my favourite articles http://changingthegameproject.com/pound-the-rock/. We live in a world where some people believe that high-level athletic performance is easy and that people are born with talent and greatness. This is far from reality. Kids don t notice themselves growing a centimeter taller each day. Only looking back over time does the realisation they have grown occur. The same holds true for any worthy pursuits. Something easily attainable is ephemeral. Small incremental improvements over time with purpose and direction gets you to a position of strength. We need kids to have fun and most importantly enjoy what they are doing but ultimately come to this realisation. If they want to develop over time they won t notice the day to day 1% improvements (after the initial rapid growth of performing something new). How our kids immediately perceive themselves doing something challenging will determine the amplitude of their grow over time. Ultimately, this will lead to satisfaction for their time and effort if nurtured along the way. Logan will be competing in an interstate event in October. Congratulations Congratulations to Michael Doan and Cale Oborne for their selection in the Composite District Secondary Hockey team. Trials Each sport offered within this pathway may have a slightly different pathway for selection. As a general rule, students must attend a district trial. From the district trial a district team is selected to compete at the regional trial. From the regional trial a Metropolitan East team is selected to compete at the State Championships. Attendance at Trials and Selection to Attend Trials For some trials, St Laurence s is limited to the number of students who can attend. In these cases, and where the College has a sporting team in that sport, the College will decide on the students nominated for the trial. In sports where the College does not have a sporting program, it will be the individual student s responsibility to prove they are of a standard to attend the trial. For the championship sports of swimming and athletics, students must meet set qualifying times. To attend any trial students must have a consent form stamped and signed by the sports department (or principal). ST LAURENCE S COLLEGE 19
