Grace Farrar Cole School 81 High Street Norwell MA 02061 781) 659-8823 ww.norwellschools.org Principal, Garry Pelletier THE COLE TIMES October 21st, 2011 MARK YOUR CALENDAR Oct 25 PTO Meeting, 7:30 pm Oct 26 Early Release; Dismissal at 12:20 pm. No Afternoon Kindergarten. Oct 26 Selectmen Meeting, School Committee Budget Presentation 7:00 pm, Town Hall Oct 29 PTO Haunted Wacky Woods, 3:00-5:30 pm Nov 15 Picture Retake Day Food Day at Cole Cafeteria, Monday, October 24th In honor of Food Day, Food Services is showcasing food grown at Appletree Farm in Scituate. On Monday, eggplant parmesan has been added to the menu. Mozzarella sticks are a popular option with students so if they would like to buy something familiar to them that they know they like but want to try the eggplant parmesan, they will be allowed to sample it. Additionally, they are featuring a harvest chicken salad with local apples in place of the teriyaki chicken Caesar salad. In celebration of Halloween, on Thursday the 27th, Mrs. Loring will be making her famous Spider Web Funnel Cakes as a snack. This snack tradition at Cole costs $1.00. Students may use the money on their account in good standingor they may bring in a dollar for this special occasion. Children may purchase this as their snack or choose from one of the other daily options. As always, only one snack may be purchased per day. THIS WEEK AT COLE Autumn is in full force at Cole. This week our 4th graders visited Bog Hollow Farm in Kingston. A tradition in 4th grade at Cole for many years now, students get to visit the working farm, enjoy a hayride and pick pumpkins. All the rain did not stop Mrs. Joy s class from learning about earth worms on Thursday - thanks to some terrific parents who actually brought in buckets of dirt and earth worms and set up in the community room. Kindergarten visit from Roger Williams ZooMobile last week One of our curriculum goals is to incorporate technology in creative ways. This week, Mr. Menice, our art teacher, used song and video to begin a lesson on impressionism art with the 5th grade. Students were introduced to Vincent Van Gogh by watching a video slide show of his artwork set to the song Vincent by Don McLean. They are learning about the impressionist style of movement and motion by studying Van Gogh s life. Students are starting their own painting project of his most famous work, Starry Starry Nights. If you would like to see the slide show, cut and paste this link into your browser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dipfmjckzom. Mr. Menice s 5th grade art class view slide show

Who s New at Cole? Have you met Meghan Corcoran? Meghan is new to Special Education at Cole after working in Hanover for three years. When she is not teaching, Meghan loves to read, run and spend time on Cape Cod. Welcome to Cole, Meghan! BAND ALL-STARS SILVER: Congratulations to Katie Amorosino for earning Silver on her flute! EMAILING THE OFFICE When emailing the school for dismissal, absence or other attendance issues, please be sure to email both Joyce Tracey at joyce.tracey@norwellschools.org and Janet Asnes at janet.asnes@ norwellscools.org. Thank you. PTO CORNER The Norwell Food Pantry needs your help. When you do your weekly shopping, please consider picking up a little something for the Food Pantry. Often times when we think of bringing in items we go to our cupboards and bring in soup, macaroni & cheese or canned vegetables. It is wonderful to be so generous but sometimes the pantry needs other staples that we may not have considered. So, the PTO will be collecting specific types of donations each month. This month, in consideration of Halloween and the sugary snacks that abound, we are collecting dental hygiene items; toothbrushes, toothpaste, dental floss and mouthwash. Drop offs may be left in the box in the school lobby. We have been told that some parents are not getting the PTO emails. Please be sure to add colepto.org to your address books to ensure that mail does not go to spam. Please attend the School Committee's presentation of the 2012/2013 Budget to the Town Selectman on Wednesday, October 26 at 7:00 pm at the Town Hall. If you are not able to make it that night, please watch the presentation on Local Access Cable. Our next PTO meeting is Tuesday, October 25th at 7:30 pm. The agenda is attached to the bottom of this Cole Times.
