The British Sprint Championships in Nottingham were held at the September regatta and LKR paddlers came back with 2 Gold, 6 silver & 4 Bronze. Lightning Our Lightning paddlers, who were competing at the 4 GB Regattas in Nottingham, did very well with 3 of the Scottish clubs in the top 5 UK clubs and LKR coming top and beating the big clubs down south. We were presented with the cup (which is retained by the sprint committee) and we took home a Silver Salvia Didn t we do Well We had 4 paddlers competing for GB last season: Lewis Fletcher at Senior World Championships at Racice, Czech Republic in K4 500m Emma Brockway at Junior World Championships at Piesti, Romania in K4 500m Finn Cadell also at Junior World Championships at Piesti, Romania in K2 1000m Jack Brockway at the Olympic Hopes regatta Jack Brockway has also been selected to representing GB at the 2018 Youth Olympic World Games Qualifying event but Our own Sprint Regatta in May on the loch was a great success with 70 paddlers taking part, 25 from LKR. The Scottish Sprint League is competed for by all clubs in Scotland over 4 Sprint Regattas. Points are awarded for each end every paddler who competes this includes 8 year olds to well us oldies. Again this season the Scottish Sprint League trophy was retained by LKR this is only the 5th time in 35 odd years that it has not been in the possession of Kirkcaldy Canoe Club & the 4 th time in a row.

In Marathon our numbers taking part have held steady this season and it is Scottish great to see our Lightnings paddlers taking up the challenge against the other clubs. In the Marathon League on the Long Course Silver Sean Redmond, Bronze Simon Dean. Short Course Bronze Derek Marshall. Mini Course our best placed paddler was Cecile Redmond in 5 th place. Once again we were unable to get our hands on the Scottish Marathon Club Trophy which was won by Kirkcaldy CC again - more bums on seats required please. At the Scottish Marathon Championships we won: K1 Marathon Held in Inverness no LKR paddlers K2 Marathon 3 Gold & 1 Silver K1 10km Championships 1 Gold K2 10km Championships 1 Gold, 1 Silver & 2 Bronze Our own Marathon took was again held in Linlithgow on the canal. This event which is suitable for ALL paddlers including Lightnings will take place on 22 nd April on the canal with distances for all abilities and all are welcome to compete & Alan will be looking for volunteers in due course. The club took part in a number of Club events through the season. Scottish Racing Week This is a series of 5 races that take place over 8 days and we have the following Long Course: 1 st Sean Redmond, 2 nd Simon Dean. category winner: Mini: 2 nd Cecile Redmond Lightning: 1 Kristina Armstrong, 2 nd Laren Wynne & 3rd Hannah Toovey. Short Course: 2 nd Derek Marshall, 3 rd Jason Toovey. Glasgow to Edinburgh This challenge takes place over 2 days to cover the 56 Miles from the centre of Glasgow to the centre of Edinburgh. We had paddlers entered 4 different classes In the K1 solo race Finn Cadell was 4 th completed the course together in a time of 8hr:47min. K1 relay Class we had 1/3 rd of a team Jack Brockway (+Max Seleicki, FCC & Martin Chorvath) who set a new team realy record time of 08hr:23min. And finally we entered a K2 Open Team Relay where we had 2 boats & 10 paddlers an adult paddling with a lightning paddler. This was great fun for both the paddlers & the

support crews (5 cars chasing the boat across central Scotland for 2 days) Our time was 8hr:51mins beating KCC by more than an 1 hour! to get the John Kinninmonth Memorial Trophy Devizes to Westminster This is a 125-mile race that takes place every Easter where you have to portage with your boat 77 times. Last year Emma Dunlop & Ione Russell completed this event at their 3 rd attempt. Diane Sharp entered the 4-day K1 event but had to retire on day 3. Hasler Finals & GB Champs Cape Point Challenge These are the GB Club championships & the GB Marathon Championships are held, separately, at one of the bigger clubs down south. Alas we did not have any representation at these events last season. This is a race for Surf Ski paddlers and takes place around the Cape of Good Hope the bottom tip of land of Africa, in South Africa. This race is approximately 50km in the open sea with tides and big waves. On the 16 December 2017 Lizelle Kemp took part in this challenging race and was the 11 th Female finisher in a little over 6 hours of paddling. LKR also organise 2 race series throughout the season in summer on the loch & in winter on the canal. The Summer Series The Winter Series Last year we were able to run all the 5 events as programmed with 46 paddlers taking part over the series with Lizelle Kemp, Aidan Leiper, Freya Randel, Josh Grey & Hannah Toovey all winning their respective classes. These take place on the canal 5 times during the winter months and we had to cancel 2 due to ICE. We have 1 more event to come on Sunday 11 th March. All of these events have been well attended and we encourage all new members to come along and give them a try. Our Committee have been working hard at getting more paddlers on the water & this included parents this season Head coach, John Lewis, has faced his own challenges last year but with the assistance of Pete, George, Skye, Oliver & Derek delivered the session through the season and on into the winter. Monday night winter Gym Sessions have, in the main been taken by John with the assistance of George, Skye & Pete. The Thursday night s sessions have also been run by John & George.

The winter swimming sessions at the Academy on Wednesday nights have been taken by Derek with the assistance of parents and I like to thank Rona for providing cover when required. All of these sessions are aimed at the lightning & Under 14 age groups paddlers and will stand them in good stead for the start of the season. Our SCA squad paddlers, who make up over 40% of the squad, continue to train at Ratho and already this year (2017 have been in Slovakia XC skiing & Portugal for warm weather paddling). Chris Wynne who has volunteered to take on the webmaster role for the club & has introduced the new website during the year. Our locker at the basin, where we keep boats and paddles, required what is termed First Maintenance that is the exterior of the shed required re-painting. We provided the paint & we have to thank the Linlithgow Union Canal Society for providing the labour to apply the paint, which was very much appreciated. Again I would like to thank all my fellow committee members and coaches for their assistance over the last year, especially to Nan for her work and support, and last but not least I would like to thank our Mr Fix It Neil Redmond who has continued to work away in the background, refurbishing and repairing equipment - if a boat gets damaged please let us know so we can fix it.
