Safety Beach Sailing Club E-Newsletter Wednesday 20th May 2015 Commodore: Ross Martin Website: www.safetybeachsailingclub.com.au Contact: Club email: safetybeachsailing@gmail.com Keel Boats & Trailables Congratulations to Steve Richardson and the crew of Tardis who are the Keel Boat Champions for the 2014-2015 Season and to all the other winners that were announced on Saturday Night at the end of season dinner. Quantum Sails - Autumn Series Race 3: It was great to see 15 boats out for Race 3 of the Autumn Series. Unfortunately the wind was a little unfair and decided to abate a little quicker than forecast which unfortunately meant that none of the boats were able to complete the course in the 4.5hour time limit. However, we were able to take times for the boats that rounded the Pier Mark and have processed these times for your interest only these results will not be included in the overall Series Scores Please find attached a copy of these Pier Rounding Results and also the Series Scores to date Race 4 10am on Sunday 24 th May Make sure you are out for the last race of the Quantum Sails Autumn Series. Your Race Officers for the day will be Rosemary and Sandy Brass Monkey Winter Series: Commences on Sunday 31 st May @ 10:00am All race documents can be found on the club web-site. Start times will be issued next week so if you haven t sent in an email with your intention to race please send it in now to keelboats@safetybeachsailingclub.com.au Learn more about AMS: (Australian Measurement System for Keel Boats), John Chatham, the designer of AMS, will be visiting the club after the first race of the BMWS on the 31 st May to give us a presentation on AMS. As you may have heard the plan for the 2015/2016 season is to introduce AMS for all Summer Sunday Racing i.e. results will be calculated using both the PHD handicapping system that we currently use and also AMS so make sure you head back to the club to hear all the ins and out on AMS, how it works and what is required to get your boat measured up.

Notes from the SBSC Archives NEWSLETTER (2) HUMBLE BEGINNINGS Our original Control Tower building was extended later on, when we added an upper storey for race organisation and radio communications. It was demolished along with a spar locker (our former clubhouse) and toilet block when our Club site was expanded in 2007 to become the combined Community Centre that it is today. The cover of Newsletter No 6 dated 1st December 1969 is decorated with a sketch showing the very first Club premises planned for Safety Beach Sailing Club only three years after its foundation. A fenced rectangle with three entry gates represents the Club s open compound for yacht storage and rigging yard. It was surrounded by trees on the east and north sides. The red box on the right corner of the compound is a single story brick Control Tower, proudly flying the Club s Dolphin burgee. The larger building on the right is the old Boat Hire and Mussel Farm shed, with an iron railed track across the beach for direct access to the sea. People had to step over this track at the top, or duck under it to walk along the beach in those days. The 1969-1970 Newsletter Editor Lindsay Quinn wrote At last, the building program is underway and it is the sincere hope of your Committee that the fencing and Control Tower will be completed in time for the Christmas races. The builder is our member Phillip Brewer... Anyone who travels weekly up and down the highway with their boat will fully appreciate the facility that will soon be available on site but we have (yet) to undertake construction of the toilet block next season. Wonder what our members did for toilets before 1970? Please call TOM McCULLOUGH on: 5988 4365 or preferably email your recollections about the Club direct to: tom.mccullough@bigpond.com The loan of old photos or memories of the Club s early days could be useful for the Club history now being compiled for our 50th Anniversary.

Red Skies at Night An OTB Sailor s delight Sailor: Ewan Boat Type: B14 Sail Number: 156 The last worlds at McCrae were a lot of fun and the English and French crews were very friendly off the water. Here is the highlights video: https://youtu.be/my2a53cbaz0 Sailor: Tom McCullough Boat Type: Sabre Sail Number: 1535 I learnt to sail as a boy in the Hornsby- Kurringai Police Citzens Youth Club Sailing Club (or HKPCYCSC for short!) on the Hawksbury river NSW. As a teenager I joined the Lane Cove 12ft skiff club and sailed a Cherub before Uni, business and kids put an end to regular sailing for 17 years. When Tori was old enough (7!) we bought an old 145 and sailed out of Merricks for 3 years before buying the B14 and joining Safety Beach. The B14 is, in my opinion, the easiest, most fun and best bang for your buck skiff there is. It was designed by Julian Bethwaite in 1984 as a cut down version of an 18ft skiff but the use of wings rather than trapeze makes sailing it a lot easier. The boat is fast but not ridiculous, planing upwind in 10 knots means you have fun on every leg and the flexible rig is somewhat forgiving so you don t swim too much..tori and I have learnt a lot in our first two seasons and once we grown into the recommended range of crew weight (130-180kg) we hope to be competitive. The class is small but friendly and there is a sizeable and very vocal female contingent! There are a few skiff regattas each season plus state and national titles. The worlds are in Lake Garda next year which is very tempting. What delights an (old) OTB Sailor? Dromana Bay in May Sailing s fine in summer zephyrs Tacking fast to catch the shifts ; But when autumn cools our efforts, Squalls capsize each lift. Westward lies the choppy seaway Eastern hills a cradle makes, Winter comforts now replace an Ancient sailor s aches. Leaving cold those coastal waters Turning inland from the shore Rest is needed when it matters Dry for evermore! Gleaming westward through my window Rippling wet with silver drops Winter s cubist watery rain-show Brightly shines, then stops. Eastward lies the calmest scene Among those hills engraved in blues Arching rainbow, brilliant gleams in Multi-coloured hues. Springtime seems so far off always, When each sailing season ends, Winter refits filled those cold days Who s for sailing? Coming friends?

Western Port Report Good morning all Sailors Western Port had some terrific sailing conditions on Sunday. We spent time practicing close group tacking & starting. Our coaches followed us around giving us hints and tips on the way. Throughout the morning we had a number of short races to practice what we had learnt. Pilates Group Tuesday Nights Bay We have a new weekly Pilates class operating out of the Safety Beach Sailing Club which started last week, details as follows: Pilates Group Instructor: Sherryle Dowling Time: 17:30-18:30 Day: Tuesday Where: 1st Floor Meeting Room Cost: $15/class Contact: Ph: 0402 493 609 Em: sherrylefitness@gmail.com Catch up News It was however very hard to concentrate (sorry Rick) because throughout the morning we had a pod of dolphins joining in. They appeared to enjoy the company of the boats as much as we were enjoying theirs and they stayed with us for most of the morning!! All are welcome so if you want to come and join in please do; http://www.westernport.yachting.org.au/ On a final note please don't forget the ZHIK OTB MID WINTER SERIES at Sorrento. Opti's, Minnows, Bic's lasers & Sabres are all welcome and it would be nice to get a group from SBSC there. Race Management Training Sandringham Yacht Club - sessions 2015 Sandringham yacht club is delivering a volunteer race management training program during the winter months and offering it at no cost to clubs to attend. Their invitation is as below, please consider if you would like to participate. For the last three years Sandringham Yacht Club has delivered race management training courses for our volunteers.
