THE FULL CURL Monroe Catholic Ram s Athletics Announcements If you attend a soccer game, please do not do as I did, and bring your dog. Apparently that is frowned upon by FYSA. Our cheerleading coach is trying to garner interest in starting a Jr. high cheerleading team. The team would cheer during the Jr. high boys basketball season, which runs from late August to the middle of October. If you have a 6th grade or 7th grade child who would like to cheer, please have them let Coach Deck know. Also, Mrs. Deck is trying to gauge interest in high school cheerleading as well. We have had a number of 8th grade girls who have expressed an interest. If you have a child in 8-11th grade who you think might want to cheer, please have them touch base with Coach Deck. Don t forget the the Spring Concert. The concert will take place Thursday, at 6:30pm, here in the gym. Dear Parents: Welcome to week thirty-four of The Full Curl. What an exciting week to be the Monroe Catholic athletics director. We had a weekend full of events, a couple of which I was unable to make, but all of them exciting and rewarding. I wanted to take you through the weekend, to give you some perspective on what our students are up to. On Friday, at about 1pm, with the help of a few of Monroe s wonderful students, and the lovely and talented Lynn Puryear, I was able to get the truck loaded up and headed over to the Antler Room, upstairs at the Elks, to get started on decorating for the Monroe Athletics Department Texas Hold Fundraiser. Much to my surprise Joyce Gavora, whose children have graduated from Monroe, came to lend a hand. Along with Joyce and Lynne, we were joined by Lynne s sister Tracy and her youngest son Ian, who is absolutely adorable. I am always amazed at how the room looks before we decorate and how it looks about two hours later, when it is done. With the room looking great, we all got a little break and headed back for the event, which started with social hour from 5:30-6:30. Poker was not the only Monroe athletics event on the schedule for the evening. Our soccer team, fresh off their recent win over Eielson, was playing Hutchison at 5 p.m. I had thoroughly enjoyed Follow me on Twitter @thefullcurl Page 1 Athletic questions? 322-9043

Last Week s Recap The soccer team went 2-0, for I believe, the first time in my seven years as AD here at Monroe! The Rams defeated Eielson by a score of 5-2 and Hutchison 2-1. Way to go Rams! The varsity baseball team defeated Delta by a score of 16-10, in Delta. It sounds like the Rams all remembered to bring their bats to Delta! The JV baseball team lost to the Delta JV by a score of 6-4. The 7th grade girls volleyball team dropped both games in competitive fashion last week, losing to Ryan and Randy Smith. The 8th grade split their two games last week, defeating Ryan, but losing to Randy Smith. Kudos A special thanks to all of our volunteers who helped at the Texas Hold Em Tournament and the track meet. I wanted to especially thank Rich Meyer, who not only dealt cards from 6:30-11pm, but when the tourney ended, stepped in for me when I had to leave to pick up Mrs. O, and helped load up everything and then went with Coach Chapman and Lynne Puryear back to the school to unload all of the decorations and supplies. Wow, that is going way above and beyond the call of duty! the previous game and while I hadn t thought we reversed the pitch enough, and felt we had the ball dispossessed more than I would like, I felt we played pretty well. I was very disappointed to have to miss this game. We also had our first baseball game in Delta. Anyone who knows me knows I love baseball and often wish I lived in a city with a pro baseball team. If I did, I would most certainly have season tickets and would attend every home game I possibly could. I love the atmosphere-the noise when someone gets a hit, the sound of the ball coming off of the bat, and the applause of the crowd, and the smell of hotdogs, peanuts, and popcorn. I just love it all. If I did live in one of these cities, I would also be divorced, as Mrs. likes to go to a game, but not every game and she certainly isn t interested in extra innings. One thing I can tell you for sure, Coach O isn t leaving till the game is over. So with soccer and baseball on my mind, folks started showing up for the Texas Hold Em Tournament. Every year I worry about whether we will get enough folks to show up to raise enough money to help fund our athletics department. By 6:15, it was obvious we were going to have a great turnout and I was able to rest easy. The tournament got under way and not long after, I ran home to check on Monroe (the puppy). Mrs. O was on her way home from some work related training, in Dallas, Texas. Due to some inclement weather, she missed her connecting flight and now wouldn t make it home till 10:40 p.m., as opposed to 4:30. So I took Monroe out for a quick walk and headed back to the tournament. During this time, news came in our soccer team had defeated Hutchison 2-1. WOW! What a huge win for our schools. Shortly after my return to the tournament, Coach Heath and her staff were at the tables, playing and celebrating the big win. I was also able to get updates on the baseball team with help from Mrs. Michel and Kyle Coiley. We were all excited to learn, at around 10 p.m., the boys had pulled out the victory, winning 16-10. The tournament went along smoothly. I had to leave the tournament with about eight people left at the final table to grab Mrs. O from the airport. Patrick Chapman kept me updated and let me know the final two contestants were Jacyn DeBaun and Mike Atkins. By the time we had determined Mrs. O s bags were not going to arrive home till much later, the tournament had ended with Jacyn DeBaun as the victor. Going to sleep was a lot easier knowing the tournament had gone smoothly, and our soccer and baseball teams were victorious. Follow me on Twitter @thefullcurl Page 2 Athletic questions? 322-9043

MCHS Sports Trivia TRIVIA QUESTION: Name the child of this year s Texas Hold Em Winner, the grade he is in and identify his grandma and grandpa on his Mom s side. RULES To win the trivia contest, you must give me the answer IN PERSON. Emails, texts and phone calls will not suffice! Remember, only one guess per household. The first person to correctly answer the trivia question will win an MCHS T-shirt. LAST WEEK S WINNER Nobody was able to identify Chris Gavora as the young man who pitched the first complete game in Monroe Catholic Baseball History. SMALL PRINT The spouse of the Director of Athletics, parents and STAFF who work directly inside CSF are not eligible for participation in The Full Curl trivia competition for 24 hours after the emailing of The Full Curl. The next morning I headed out to the track meet in North Pole, which we were hosting. One thing you know when Monroe is hosting a track meet--or any sporting event for that matter is that there will be plenty of volunteers and help. I spent about two hours working with Mr. Metz, Mr. Wallace and Mr. Obermeyer, measuring each of the shot put throws of all the contestants. I have learned over the years that if you want to watch any of the track meet, don t help with shot put. You will be able to hear the roar of the crowd, but you will have no idea what the roar is relationship to. After the track meet, I headed home to have a dinner with Mrs. O and head over to a local establishment to enjoy the celebration of Mrs. Wallace s 35th birthday. I would have loved to stay longer and celebrate, but the boss and I headed over to the school to watch the first production of a play at Monroe since I arrived here seven years ago. My hat s off to Mr. Newman, Ms. Benito and the entire crew and cast for pulling this off. I was especially impressed with the ability to develop the stage and change scenes so successfully. What an amazing accomplishment. I am already looking forward to next year s performance. The following day, I attended the ASAA regional meeting, being held here in Fairbanks. ASAA often gets a bad rap, but without them, we would never be able to enjoy sports at the high school level. Following the meeting, I was able to attend the girls basketball banquet, which was exceptionally well done. The video put together by Coach Leah Stepovich was amazing and one of the cooler things I have seen at a banquet. All in all, what a weekend. We were victorious in soccer and baseball, we ran a successful major fundraiser, we pulled off a track meet, celebrated a birthday, enjoyed a play, and celebrated the girls basketball season. I can t wait for Monday, so I can actually get a break! The common denominator to all of these things is the parents and community. None of these events could have been pulled off without the help and support of so many people. I know I am so blessed to be a small part of it.
