Gregory Garnich by-nc-nd jkownacki by-nc-nd HarryHuang An events-led initiative to help revive Wynnum Wynnum is a suburb with strong connections to Brisbane s past but also an exciting future. It is a suburb that offers bayside living with great public transport and fast links to the Brisbane CBD. Identified as a major regional activity centre in the South East Queensland Regional Plan, it is also a suburb with untapped potential. The Illuminations Festival is a part of a series of events-led initiatives that will be of great benefit to the Wynnum traders by bringing much needed visitation to the suburb. In addition it will engender a renewed sense of civic pride in those who choose to live in this fantastic suburb. The Illuminations Festival is one of many current and emerging events planned for Wynnum. The recent adoption of the Wynnum Manly Regional Plan and discussion around the future potential of the former Wynnum Central State School site has presented opportunities for a development-led revitalization of Wynnum. But this will take time. The Wynnum CBD is rising to the challenge presented by the departure of retail businesses and a number of long-term vacant shops. This will change as development takes place, but in the meantime we need to do something. The Illuminations Festival is one such needed initiative.
The Event Situated around the natural cluster of Wynnum Jetty, wading pool, play area, beach and the Pelicans Nest cafe it will bring the area to life in a colourful celebration of Bayside life in winter. by-nc Linh_rOm Markets - The event will commence at noon with market stalls being located under the large trees next to the wading pool whale play area and adjacent to Florence Street. These will be run by the operator of the successful Wynnum Central Markets held each month in the CBD. It will have a mixture of business and community stalls including food, retail or schools selling glow sticks. The markets will become a feature at night as Twilight Markets under colour lanterns and illuminated trees. by-nd jongela19 Entertainment Day - From noon there will be a program of free entertainment with street performers, fire twirlers and small amusement rides near the wading pool. The entertainment on the beach will include a large scale puppet theatre, face painting, and indigenous awareness. Dusk - At dusk from approximately 5pm all local schools in the Wynnum Manly and general area will gather and participate in a lantern parade from the former Wynnum Central School site to the wading pool. Each school will parade a large scale lantern in the form of a sea creature. The parade would traverse Edith Street over Bay Terrace and join the Esplanade going adjacent to the wading pool and culminate in placing lanterns on the pool. The groups of schools would disperse around the Festival and manning their own stands with sculptures. Visitors would be allowed to add water lanterns to the wading pool with controlled supervision by volunteers. Representatives from the WINNAM Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Corporation will present a welcome ceremony for the occasion (subject to confirmation). by-nc Davide Simonetti Evening - From 6pm -9pm an illuminated light show will bath the boardwalk alongside the wading pool and project images including that of local children s art. Computer mapping of the main park building will produce a template which the schools will use to create individual student art, the artwork is then scanned and a computer generated image, mapped to the shape of the building facade will be projected, rolling through hundreds of students art works during the evening. Community involvement - The involvement of all 10-12 local schools will be encouraged through excellent relationships built up through the Wynnum Taskforce initiatives. Schools will participate in the lantern parade and work with local artists to run workshops. Wading Pool - The space will be used with floating lanterns. Local schools will be invited to participate as part of the Parade. by-nc-nd ConstantineD
