Games 22-25 / USF Under Armour Showcase / March 7-9, 2014 / Tampa, Fla. / USF Softball Stadium (1,600) SARA NEVINS PITCHER OF THE WEEK AWARD If Sara Nevins continues to pitch the way she has, the American Athletic Conference may have to name its pitcher of the week award after her. The senior has won the American Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week award three straight times and has now won nine straight games after starting the season 0-2. Nevins leads the team with nine wins, a 1.17 earned run average and 85 strikeouts in 65.2 innings so far this season. Over the weekend, Nevins also moved into second all-time on USF s career wins list with 81 career victories, passing Leigh Ann Ellis who had 77 wins from 2003-04. She now needs only 12 more victories to pass Monica Triner for the most in program history. DEADLY DUO The Bulls have always been known as a team that will rely heavily on their pitchers and this season is no different. Sara Nevins and Erica Nunn have been extremely effective for the Bulls so far this season, accounting for 14 of the team s 16 victories. They currently rank first and second in the American in opponent batting average (Nunn -.146 / Nevins -.148) as well as first and third in strikeouts (Nevins - 85 / Nunn - 60). Nunn also tops the conference with two saves while Nevins recorded her first save of the year against Illinois State (2/21) to become USF s all-time leader in that category with 18. Nunn was named to the conference honor roll after week one while Nevins has won three consecutive Pitcher of the Week awards. Thanks to this deadly duo, the Bulls currently lead the American in wins (16), shutouts (8), strikeouts (182) and opponent batting average (.161). SALVAROLA ON FIRE Despite a slow start to the season based on her standards, Kourtney Salvarola has caught fire over the Bulls last 10 games. Over that span she ranks second on the team with a.478 batting average and seven RBI and is second on the team with 10 runs scored and 12 hits. She has raised her batting average for the season back to.339 and ranks second in the American in runs (16) and fourth in hits (19). The senior shortstop was named American Athletic Conference Player of the Week after leading the Bulls to a 6-0 record at the Under Armour Invitational. SCORING IN BUNCHES Head coach Ken Eriksen believes in building his team around pitching and defense. The Bulls have certainly excelled in those areas this season but have also gotten a huge boost from their offense. Over their last 10 games the Bulls have outscored their opponents 69-14 and are batting.364 as a team. During its six games in the Under Armour Invitational, USF outscored its opponents 47-5 and recorded at least eight runs in every game but one. The Bulls have had at least four players record multi-rbi games in each of their last seven contests. USF ranks first in the American in hits (170), batting average (.314), runs (116), RBI (100) and on-base percentage (.408). They also rank second in home runs (17) and slugging percentage (.485). FRESH FACES MAKING AN IMPACT The Bulls have received giant contributions from their seven newcomers this season. Ta coia Williams is tied for second on the team in home runs with four and is tied for second on the squad with 13 runs batted in. Karla Claudio has come on as off late with a.444 batting average and four RBI in her last 10 games. Juli Weber is one of nine Bulls with double-digit hits and has started 11 games in center field. Veronica Gajownik is batting.371 with nine runs, 13 hits and 10 RBI while sharing time with Kristen Wyckoff, who is batting.400 with six hits and four runs. Kassandra Moeller and Susan Wysocki have also made appearances for USF this season. MILESTONE MAN ROAD TO OKLAHOMA CITY USF will be looking to get back to the Women s College World Series for the second time in three years in 2014 after being bounced in the NCAA Regionals by Florida last season. The Bulls won their first ever BIG EAST Tournament Championship last year and also made their 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Ken Eriksen has assembled one of the toughest schedules in the nation to prepare his team for a deep tournament run. The Bulls played three Women s College World Series participants from last season in their first 10 games (Florida, Michigan & Tennessee). HOME AWAY FROM HOME The Bulls return to the Eddie C. Moore Complex in Clearwater for two games this weekend on Saturday. The Bulls second home has traditionally been a place where the team has been extremely successful. Since 2006 the Bulls have amassed a 58-37 record in Clearwater, including a 6-1 record this season after playing seven games at the Eddie C. Moore Complex as part of the NFCA Lead-Off Classic and USF Under Armour Invitational over the past two weekends. WHAT TO WATCH FOR... A number of records are within reach for some USF seniors this season. Stephanie Medina and Kourtney Salvarola both have a chance to break the career home runs record of 33 set by Holly Groves from 2002-04. Salvarola also has a chance to set the all-time RBI record if she can knock in 54 runs this season, which would break Carmela Liwag s mark of 171 from 2002-05. Last but not least, Sara Nevins should easily pass Monica Triner s records in innings pitched (788.0) and Cristi Ecks record for saves (18). Nevins also has a chance to become the program s all-time wins leader with 21 victories this season. That would break Triner s record of 92 career wins from 1996-99. 2013 ACHIEVEMENTS Last season was another great year for the Bulls as they won their first ever BIG EAST Tournament Championship and advanced to their 11th NCAA Tournament in program history. On top of that Ken Eriksen broke the school s all-time wins record in any sport, passing longtime USF baseball coach Eddie Cardieri, with 732 career victories. Kourtney Salvarola was named first team All-BIG EAST. Lefty ace Sara Nevins broke Monica Triner s career strikeouts record of 641 and finished the year with 804 and counting. Nevins was also named an NFCA All-American for the second straight season as well as BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year. USF SERIES IN CLEARWATER, FLA. For the seventh consecutive year USF and the City of Clearwater have partnered up to put together the USF Series, consisting of three tournaments in Tampa and at Clearwater s Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex. The tournaments have become one of the premier destinations for softball teams across the country and Clearwater has become a home away from home for the Bulls. Check out the USF Series website for more information: www.usfseries.com and us the hashtag #USFSeries2014 on Twitter. STORYLINES Head coach Ken Eriksen recorded his 750th career victory last weekend with an 8-0 win over St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon. Eriksen is USF s all-time wins leader in any sport and broke former USF baseball coach Eddie Cardieri s record of 731 wins last season on April 23 with a 6-3 win at Seton Hall. In his 17 years as USF s head coach, Eriksen has posted 15 winning seasons, led the program to 10 NCAA Tournaments, six seasons with 50 or more wins and the school s first ever Women s College World Series appearance in 2012. PROTECT THIS HOUSE The Bulls have been nearly unbeatable at home since they started playing in the stateof-the-art USF Softball Stadium in 2011.
