Each year, the championship attracts some of the finest tour professionals and golfing legends alike, all competing for the 100,000 prize fund on the testing holes of The Cromwell Course at Nailcote Hall. SALES BROCHURE TONY JACKLIN CBE A pioneering superstar, nobody has been more instrumental in the development of golf in Europe than Farmfoods British Par 3 Championship host Tony Jacklin CBE. The golfing landscape was very different when Tony Jacklin holed the winning putt in the 1969 Open Championship, there was no European Tour and perhaps even more remarkable, in a period of massive US and Australian dominance. Max Faulkner was the last British player who won The Open Championship, 18 years previously. All that was about to change, and the world of golf would never be the same again. Young, courageous and immensely talented, Jacklin held off an incredible field that included Jack Nicklaus, Peter Thomson, Bob Charles and Roberto Di Vicenzo among many more. By lifting the Claret Jug in 1969, Jacklin single-handedly inspired the most talented generation of European golfers. Faldo, Woosnam, Lyle, Langer and Ballesteros quite simply couldn t have achieved what they did if it wasn t for this truly momentous win and Jacklin s inspiration. Jacklin wasn t finished though. The following season, he continued his history-making streak when he won his second major title by taking the U.S. Open Championship by seven strokes on a weather-beaten Hazeltine National Golf Club course. By doing so, Jacklin became the first British player to win the Championship since Ted Ray in 1920 and he remained the only European player to have won the Championship until 2010, when Graeme McDowell ended the streak. During the 1980s, Jacklin extended his achievements as a player into his role as captain of the European Ryder Cup team. It is no exaggeration to say that without Jacklin, the Ryder Cup, as we know it, wouldn t exist. By restoring pride in the locker room and radically professionalising the whole approach taken to the event, he led the Europeans to a landmark victory in 1985 at The Belfry, their first for 28 years. In 1987, Jacklin s team went even further, achieving something that had never been done previously by beating the Americans on their own home soil at Muirfield Village in Ohio. bp3@championsukplc.com
