PRESIDENT S REPORT First of all, just wanted to say welcome to a very busy couple of months for the Club. It will be action packed with all different kinds of events and I hope everyone is excited for what is to come. To begin, this Sunday, we have round 2 of the Autocross Championship and round 1 of the CDC. The weekend that follows, 23rd-25th February, starts on Friday night, with trophy night. The guest speaker will be a mystery. Ballarat Swapmeet will be on Friday through to Sunday and thanks to Noel for organizing the parking, which the club will be providing on the Saturday morning. Over at the motor sport complex on that weekend we will be hosting the Off Road Rush once again. On the Sunday of that weekend is the Tour t Adelaide Club Hillclimb at Mt Leura run by Russell McKenzie in the morning and Wayne Holness in the afternoon. If you are free to help with any of these events please feel free to contact those who are organizing them. We always appreciate those who can lend a hand, especially with so much going on over one weekend. As for the following weekend, that of 3th and 4 th March we have the Eureka Begonia Rally. Once again if you are able to help, or have any interest in giving a hand please contact Arron Secombe on 0425857824. At this present stage we have a good field of ARC and VRC competitors so this should an exciting event. Over the long weekend in March we have the Begonia Parade. We are looking for a mixture of Club and H plated-cars, so if you are interested in adjusting off your car and joining the parade please contact me. The next weekend, March 17th and 18 th is round 4 of the Victorian Hillclimb series and round 3 of the CDC at Mt Leura. If you would like to come and help please contact me as I am running this event. Hoping to see many members out there having an overall good weekend. If anyone is interested in running a permit-plated drive down to Mt Leura for the event we would love to give permit-plated cars a chance to have a run up the hill. Non-speed of course! To wrap up, on 22nd 25th March I will be at the Grand Prix in Melbourne watching the fastest cars racing around one of the best tracks in Australia and having an absolute ball. Unfortunately, I will also be there officialling with 3 of my children. Sorry Pokie you re just too young! Now, to go back in time - on January 20 th there was a come and try, test and tune day. Arron had around a dozen people show for the test and tune which created quiet a bit of dust. Best next time not to put everything on social media. The come and try promoted by Darren Watkins was a great success with 27 potential members showing up. We were a little bit abashed with how many people showed up but it shows that there is great potential for the future growth for the Club. Next time we will be working out a better way of organizing the event but we thank Darren and his team for all the hard work they put into this event. On Sunday we had round 1 of the Autocross series. It was an overall good turnout but the prize moment of the day was when about 15 members and myself finally retrieved the Club sign for the entry to the airport. This sign has been sitting there for 6 years! It s good to have it back on Club land. Keep an eye out for when it makes its next appearance. On 11th February we had the Motokhana and Khanacross on the same day at the motor sport complex. There was a good turnout from the juniors and thank you to all members who lent a hand throughout the day. Sorry to those who were unable to finish due to clutch problems! A note on the side - at the khanacross Ambrose beat Oakley, so Oakley will need to deal with his shame. We also displayed the toolbox kindly donated by Central Automotive Repair and Servicing. This prize is up for grabs by the most consistent competitor of the championship (but not the winner). At this month s Friday night meeting the Trophy night door prize will be drawn. It will be $100 - you have to be there in person to win it. Last month s winner missed out so this month the prize has doubled. Ross Barnett and myself went up to Bathurst for the 12 hour. Had a bloody ball! Went through the KTM pits. Spoke to and received a tour of the garage by Glen Wood. Glen will be the guest speaker at this year s AGM. Had a great weekend with a large crash right in front of us resulting in the race not lasting the full 12 hours. The winner of the event was car 37 - team WRT Audi, Robin Frijns/Stuart Leonard/Dries Vanthoor. Well that final wraps up this month s Bulletin. Once again if you can lend a hand that would be great but otherwise enjoy everything that is happening at the moment. Thanks, Barney The Ballarat Light Car Club Bulletin February 2018 5

MK ROUND 1 Sunday 11th February A large crowd gathered for Round 1 of the Cec Jackman Motorkhana Championship out at the Ballarat Airport, a Motorkhana rarely draws such a large crowd but 20 drivers fronted for what turned out to be a chilly morning of racing. The usual drivers were stand-outs with Damian Faulkner taking line honours over Ben Mckee and Sam Rozitis in third though mention must be made of Jordan McDonald who took fastest Junior of the day and Damian Pendleton who, despite a low finish, showed great potential. The day ran well, aside from some remarks that Damian Faulkner had taken very small steps when pacing out the tests in the morning as some of the larger cars had a little bit of trouble getting around the cones! Thanks must be given to the following people, Barney Haddon who stood out and timed all day, along with fellow timers, Marty Cassar and Heather and Rob Pendleton who came out to watch their son race and stayed out timing all day. Damian Faulkner, Ben McKee and Reg Johnson for setting up the event. Chris Hall and Paul Duncalf for being our scrutineers with Michele Bayley doing the signing in as usual and Keith McElroy and Rod Hall doing the scoring of the event, along with Ben McKee. So thanks to all those who ran the event, all the helpers and all the competitors for making these events run. 8 The Ballarat Light Car Club Bulletin February 2018

CLUB PLATE SCHEME (CPS) CLUB PLATE RUN February 11 th Started 9.30am at the clubrooms and with a small number of cars and members we were off. With expectations of great cars, great weather, great coffee, great food and yes, great drinks. No one was disappointed! Heading north to Clunes with the sun shinning through the window, the cars shone. Then across to Newstead for the consumption of some of the best coffee I have quaffed in quite a while. Then on to Maldon for Market Day. Quick walk through the market then to the adjoining verandah of the Kangaroo Hotel. What planning. Then great food and yes, great drinks. After kicking back and meeting the locals and getting all the local gossip. (Peyton Place) The relaxation was total. It was so good I wanted to stay. So I did. Everyone else left and made their way home via several directions. I got back Monday lunch time. Next Club Run March 11 th. Come along they re always good fun. KHANACROSS RD 1 Sunday 11th February. After the last of the Motorkhana tests were packed up, it was time for the big guns to roll out, with 22 drivers fronting for the Khanacross. The courses were simple enough, with an anti-clockwise first run of the three tests, followed by a clockwise direction the next time around, that being said, they were not for the faint hearted, with several cars cracking under the strain. The day wore on as each driver raced around the long tests and long drifts and powerslides soon became the norm between the Skyline of Zac Pendleton and the Commodore Ute of Come-and-try racer Jason Allen, while many others soon got used to overshooting corners in a cloud of dust! Damian Faulkner once again took victory, while Chris Hall took advantage of the lack of 4WD cars and made some serious hay while the sun shone, taking 2nd outright with Sam Rozitis consistently putting the Mirage in 3rd. Thanks must be given to; Barney Haddon, Marty Cassar, Ben Mckee, Darren Watkins and Heather and Rob Pendleton for timing the event with Ben Mckee and Damian Faulkner for setting up the event with Rod Hall, Oakley Haddon, Andrew Bayley and Keith McElroy doing the scoring of the Khanacross. Chris Hall and Paul Duncalf were scrutineers for this event too, along with Michele Bayley doing her usual position of signing in officials and racers. 14 The Ballarat Light Car Club Bulletin February 2018

EUREKA RALLY ARC Eureka back in 2018! Four events have just been confirmed as part of the 2018 Australian Rally Championship calendar with more rounds to be announced at Rally Australia. The Eureka Rally, promoted by the Ballarat Light Car Club, will be round 1, as well as also being round 1 of the VRC. The Eureka will be run on the weekend of the 3rd and 4 th of March, two weeks earlier than the successful inaugural event this year, swapping dates with the Ballarat White Night Festival that has shifted from the week before the Begonia Festival to the following week. Can Eureka get any better? The organisers think so. Recce is planned to be on Friday, reducing days off for Victorian competitors down to one weekday. Only minor adjustments are intended to the route that was enjoyed so much by competitors this year, with Saturday s stages based in the western parts of the Wombat Forest, a short trip down the freeway from Ballarat, while Sunday s stages will again be concentrated south of Ballarat, with an exciting new stage on shire and private roads featuring a bit of everything: fords, old mines, lanes, tarmac, a farmyard and great spectator viewing. The organisers are examining a range of options for a super special spectator stage in or close to the City of Ballarat to start the event with on Friday night, and while Victoria Park this year provided a spacious and convenient service park, some all weather alternatives are under consideration. Stay tuned for developments. While the BLCC is the event promoter, to make Eureka happen, they have to draw on the broader Victorian rally community, and have brought in personnel from other clubs to fill key roles: Andrew Roseman, Clerk of the Course, Ross Runnalls, Road Director and David McKenzie, Event Secretary. Many others will be relied upon to operate stage start and finish controls and most importantly secure stages. Arron Secombe will again coordinate the recruiting and deployment of the large number of required officials. Media Director James Nixon will be asking for competitors help to ensure their sponsors get the best value from their rallying investment in Eureka 2018. Recapping: 2nd March Recce / Possible Start 2018 Eureka Rally 3rd March Heat 1 2018 Eureka Rally 4th March Heat 2 2018 Eureka Rally Great Eureka Rally Sponsorship opportunity For most special stage rallies these days, entry fees can just cover all costs, that now include requirements such as provision of medical services, ie a fully equipped vehicle staffed by paramedics at the start of every stage, and vehicle satellite tracking so that competitors are warned if there is a car ahead of them stopped and blocking the road, and organisers in HQ know when a vehicle has stopped, and from the G force sensor information, immediately know how severe an accident may have occurred. To make a profit from a rally, organising clubs must leverage the public interest that a rally can create to create commercial exposure opportunities for businesses. The Eureka Rally provides an excellent way for a Ballarat business to promote their products or services, and for the club to capitalise on all the work that goes into presenting a round of the Australian Rally Championship. It may even be a product or service that the event needs to purchase anyway. There are packages available for sponsorship ranging from $500 to $10,000, that in return provide a range of promotion avenues including exposure on Eureka Rally website, facebook page, instagram, rallycar signage, officials clothing, Event naming rights, individual stage naming rights, VIP rides with top line crews while doing pre event testing and shakedown, and VIP access to private spectator points. Plans for, but not confirmed at this stage, for a spectator stage close to Ballarat city centre, and for an ARC free to air TV package, would provide additional commercial exposure. So a great way to help the club with this event without having to stand out the bush all day, is to approach someone in business who could benefit from this partnership with the 2018 Eureka Rally. 16 The Ballarat Light Car Club Bulletin February 2018

EUREKA OFFICIALS Dear BLCC Member, In my dual role of BLCC treasurer and Eureka Rally 2018 treasurer I am trying to keep an eye on the Rally s budget to ensure that it is as financially beneficial as possible for the Club. We are presently looking at accommodation options for our key officials (approx. 6, some solo, some with partner and some with partner and baby (will bring own cot)) who really have to come to Ballarat and stay for several days (most for 2 days, one 3 dayer and one 5 dayer) before and during the Event. I have asked the Event secretary to compile a list of accommodation requirements. It occurred to me that some members might be quite happy to billet an official or two for a few days at no cost to help this aspect of the budget. By billet I mean provide an overnight bed and the simplest of a breakfast such as cereal, toast and a cup of coffee and a wake up shower. The official would look after every other aspect of their existence while in Ballarat.. This is how I would see it working. I, in conjunction with the Event secretary, would compile a list of the Event s requirements. These requirements might be a single person of either gender, two requiring separate beds (but not necessarily separate rooms), two ok to share a double bed or two with small child requiring one room. Durations of stay might be from 5 to 2 nights. From your responses to this request I would compile a list BLCC accommodation options. I would then try to find a match, advise the official(s) who would then make contact with the Member either by telephone or email to discuss the details of the billet. So now it is over to you please. Do you have an unused spare bed, a bungalow out the back, a Granny flat or a caravan, perhaps somewhere to pitch a tent and make use of your shower to freshen up and share breakfast with you? The Event is on 3-4 March and the early bird officials might arrive as early as the Wednesday before the Event. I, for example, have a male for 5 days and a female for 2 days (in separate rooms!!) sharing my house. It really is quite enjoyable having a fresh face or two at the breakfast table! If you are able to assist or would like to discuss please give me a ring or send me an email. Geoff Boyd 03 53321250 0408210846 geoff@boydie.com General Officials With the event only 3 weeks away we still require a few officials as per below, if you are able to assist please register at : http://www.eurekarally.com.au/officials.html There is free camping near the service park or we can accommodate camping at your point in the forest. Thanks to all that have already registered. Arron Harry Secombe The Ballarat Light Car Club Bulletin February 2018 19

WIDER WORLD OF MOTORSPORT The final round of the Winton Motor Raceway (WMR) Pedder s No Bull Winton Sprint Series - Round 5 Nov 2017 was run on the weekend with 2 Ballarat Juniors Josh Gay (17) & Dylan Simonis (17) competing for podium honours. With Josh driving his APRA Pulsar, Josh finished the final round in third place in the series, after winning the series last year. Josh missed round 2 which put him back to 6 th in the series. Over the final 3 rounds Josh drove well & had two seconds and a third to finish on the podium, improving his lap times over the year to best of 1.43.80. Dylan had a standout year this year winning 4 of the 5 rounds in his Holden Commodore Cup race car. Dylan improved his times with a best of 1.38.99 at the final round. Both boys are members of the Ballarat Light car Club and also raced in the BLCC Autocross series for 2017 in the juniors class. While both boys are fast on the circuit the dirt autocross track requires a different driving style which both boys took to with ease. Over the 4 round series Josh had 3 class wins & a 2 nd winning the class for the year using a fwd pulsar & a rwd Gemini rally car. Dylan had two 3 rd places & a 4 th to finished the series in 3 rd place. The boys are both stepping up next year with Josh racing in the controlled class Australian Pulsar Racing Association Victorian state series, which includes races at Phillip Island, Sandown, Winton & the newly constructed Tailem Bend circuit. Dylan is racing in the Winton & Wakefield park SuperTT series in the Cup car. Both Josh & Dylan are thankful for the support from their families and sponsors that helped make their successful year in motorsport.
