Boys Golf The Blake School wins third consecutive Class AA crown; Holmgren powers Wayzata to Class AAA title; Mahnomen/Waubun captures first championship in Class A Wayzata (Class AAA), The Blake School of Minneapolis (Class AA) and Mahnomen/Waubun (Class A) captured team championships at the 2017 State Golf Tournament. It was the third consecutive title for The Blake School. Tommy Braaten of Blooming Prairie captured individual medalist honors in Class A while Cecil Belisle won in Class AA. Wayzata s Van Holmgren was the Class AAA champion. Class A Mahnomen/Waubun, which earned runner-up honors in 2016, earned its first championship with a four-golfer score of 653 over two days of competition. The Indians defeated Lac qui Parle Valley of Madison by 18 strokes. Sleepy Eye United, a co-op between Sleepy Eye and Sleepy Eye St. Mary s, was third with 673 and Mounds Park Academy of St. Paul was fourth at 677. Ottertail Central, a co-op between Battle Lake and Henning, rounded out the top five team finishers at 687. Mahnomen/Waubun led the team competition after the first round with a score of 316. Lac qui Parle Valley bounced back and tied Mahnomen/Waubun with a 337 on the second day of play, but the Indians first-day advantage was enough to put them over the top. Scoring for Mahnomen/Waubun were Brady Liebl (156), Jaycee Clark (160), Lucas Clark-Burnette (163) and Jon Starkey (174). Blooming Prairie s Tommy Braaten led by four strokes at the end of the first day. Despite struggling with his short game early on the second day, he shot a 37 on the front nine and extended his lead to nine strokes. He then birdied the last hole and went on to defeat Matt Berning of Mounds Park Academy 140 to 150. The win was an improvement for Braaten, who tied for fourth place in 2016. Brady Madsen of MACCRAY of Clara City was third at 153. Class AA The Blake School had to share the Class AA crown in 2015 with Mankato East. That hasn t been an issue in the past two years as the Bears cruised to their third consecutive championship and sixth overall. They won as Blake in 1982 and 1984 and as The Blake School in 1997. The Blake School recorded a two-round total of 587, 14 shots better than the runners-up Continued on page 203 2017 Boys State Individual Champions Class A Medalists Class AA Medalist Wayzata s Van Holmgren led his team to the Class AAA championship while also capturing the individual title with a score of 143.
